Unofficial CDMA-only "hacked" fix for audio skip/lag issue - Touch Pro CDMA

Greetings, fellow CDMA Raphael and Diamond users!
Those of you who use third party audio players are, I'm sure, well aware of the infamous audio lag on our devices.
A few weeks ago, HTC released a fix for this issue, but it did not work on CDMA devices -- in fact, it screws your device is you install it.
Well, I spent way too much time reverse engineering the fix to see if I could find a way to adapt the fix to the CDMA version of OEM_Misc.dll (the file that is installed in the fix). Initially, I met with failure. But recently, I revisited the idea and, unbelievably (at least to me), I have managed to produce a version of OEM_Misc.dll compatible with CDMA devices that does not have the audio skip problem!
Okay, before installing, please be advised that there is still a possibility that this fix may mess up your device, requiring a hard reset. I've only tested this on one phone (mine) so I don't exactly have a large test pool yet. lol. Also, I'm not responsible if your phone crashes, bricks, blows up, or anything else.
Now that all of that is out of the way, onto the fix!
I whipped up a cab which will replace the ROM OEM_Misc.dll with the version I hacked to get it fixed. Before you install the cab, you must install the sdkcerts.cab first because all drivers MUST be signed and that is the XDA de-facto standard for signing DLLs.
Okay, to reiterate!
1. DO NOT INSTALL THIS FIX IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A CDMA PHONE!
2. YOU MUST INSTALL SDKCERTS FIRST!
Enjoy! And please report your experiences.

I might try this out. I'm not sure if it will work though because i have 9 gigs of music on my 16 gig storage card. I think that is the reason that it goes slow sometimes. Also, I am running a custom rom....would this file have to be renamed in order to work? I know that sometimes chefs change the names of stuff.

No, I doubt it has been renamed. OEM_Misc.dll is a system driver that, among other things, handles charging your phone, updating registry state for various phone properties, etc. I don't know the full scope of what it does because it's hard to tell what something is doing in assembly language, but that's what I discovered. The bug that was fixed was setting a certain timed event that happens every five minutes to a lower thread priority, so the audio driver doesn't skip.
The attached file will ONLY fix the "five minute skip" bug -- nothing else. For example, HTC Audio Manager has been reported having problems playing certain high-bit MP3s sometimes. This won't fix that. It also won't fix slow storage cards leading to buffer lags.
Also, on CDMA systems (at least stock ROMs), the HTC Audio Manager (music TF3D tab) has a special work-around where it plays at a higher priority than the five minute timer, so it doesn't skip. This is only intended if you use third party audio players (like Pocket Player) which don't have that capability.

I installed this patch with success on my Telus Diamond, I held my breath, and got past the boot screen
music plays, not sure about any skips as of yet as I'm at work and can't test it out, but.... since the HTC patch messed up my phone, I tried MightyROM 4.7 and don't think I noticed a skip since then

Has anyone else tested this with success? I guess I would like to know what exactly the DLL change does?

Not to be an ass, but follow the links in the top post. It explains all.
And yea, it works. Of course, I created it, so obviously I'd say that. ;-)

Did not mean to insult you thx1200. Thanks for all the effort, I read the links, and obviously you put some time into this. You folks that have development skills amaze me.
I am going to give this a whirl. I use core player, and it skips, as you mentioned, every 5 min.
Appreciate the effort

No hard feelings dude!! It's just that's a very common (over asked) question on posts here at xda! :-D
I hope it works for you! Let me know how it works out!

How'd I miss this? I'll cook it into my ROM and see if WMP still skips.
Thanks!

Over asking things??? At XDA?!?!?! Are you nuts???
I no longer have a Herman, but I will post this in my guide when I see more feedback on this fix. Good job!!!!

I'm going to try it because I have the issue with the music sucking because of the skipping. I have never had this problem with my Touch Pro until recently.
I am going to try it also because I have another problem in Windows Media Player: when streaming radio stations, it only goes for about 3 or 4 minutes and then stops. I used to stream on my phones for hours. On this one too. But now for the past month or so I have this problem of it stopping.

Thanks, but I tried and it didn't stop the skipping. I downloaded both cabs and after the second, the device restarted. I then tried playing mp3 file in WMP and skipping just as bad. Try and try again.

I meant to reply last week, but forgot, anyhow....
I recently loaded Juicy 8 on my diamond, as well as Kinoma Play (I don't use wmp). I had the skipping problem, badly. At least every minute of playback would have some kind of skip.
I applied the patch and no more skipping. I must have heard about 10 hours of playback since the patch.

I'm glad! Is Juicy 8 a WM 6.1 or WM 6.5 ROM? I'm curious because I haven't heard if it works (or is even needed) on a 6.5 ROM yet. I recently started running MightyROM6 (WM6.5 based), which doesn't seem to have the skip issue and as far as I know it doesn't use my hack. Maybe WM 6.5's architecture is more realtime reliable? (speculating)
Anyway, let me know.

You know, its funny, you read lag issues with playing music
I think, I just got this phone, I don't think it lags. I was using the stock music player built in. I downloaded Nitrogen music player, went to work on the bus with those awesome quality headphones the phone comes with and was listening to metallica, and to my suprise, it sounded like the worse ever downloaded mp3 I'd ever heard. skips, bleeps etc. like someone had a scrached cd when they encoded it or something.
Then I remember there was a fix for it, but only GSM phones, and then I sorta remembered about a fix for cdma phones... I get home and search for it and wow. I found the page.
Thank you. I am already *****y about the phone's inability to recieve txt picture messages (telus) and this fix makes me content for now.
And I have been listening to metallica for about 10 min, I havn't heard any lag issues.
Thanks again!

Verizon is CDMA. That's what this was designed for. I'd be a little surprised if it works on a WM Standard device, but hey! It's worth a shot! Just be prepared to have to hard reset, in case it doesn't work...
EDIT: Also, I am not an expert and I am not responsible for bricking your phone, etc. Usual disclaimer.

Thnx, thx! Not quite brave enough to try it now, maybe after my next reset.
I'll post results when.
*Edit*
Nope, no luck. tried it before a hard reset, wouldn't restart past the HTC screen. Same for after the reset.
:-(
Thanks anyways.

Fm Radio Hack?

I know there are probally Diamond threads about this but I have been told that what Sprint did to disable the FM Radio on the Pro is not the same. Has anyone figured out a hack or any way to enable the FM Radio? I have the headphones from my mogul which I'm told will work!
Thanks
I've heard a few people think they are close, but nobody has actually done it yet.
over at ppcgeeks some have managed to get it to lock to stations, but without audio, I think it'll be a matter of time before they get it working, just like what happened with the GPS on the Mogul (Titan)

That was no hack. Via HTC to Sprint it was first simply a leak and then an official release of an OS ROM & appropriate radio with the GPS drivers.
For an active FM radio on the CDMA Touch Pro it'll come to us either in the form of the hack or a more mundane delivery as with the Titan GPS by a carrier including its functional state in their ROM. Multiple carriers have now released the phone so the chances of the latter are increased.

Yeah, I know, I just meant that people didn't believe the Titan had a GPS chip, and with a little patience were proven wrong. I really do think that there are some brilliant minds looking into this, and the phone is really new, so they may be able to get it working.
Let's hope so! I'm fairly sure that it'll happen.

[Q] Unsolvable Hero question....

UPDATE: ok, ive figured out part of the problem so maybe a solution will be easier. After experimenting, iheld down my menu key and it opened the keybrd, hitting the speak button initiate my call for as long as i talk, once i stop it tries searching and does its job. SO, there is a problem between the voice recognizer initiating when it should turn on....or something like that.
could not find ANYTHING in my settings that would turn this on permanently.
ideas? thx
hey guys, first time poster long time reader.
huge fan of what everyones been doing here so maybe i can get help cause ive been unable to find any solution.
PROBLEM: In car bluetooth handsfree communication for PHONECALLS only, competely not working.
Ok, so i have had my telus htc hero for 2 years now, everything worked fine on stock 1.5 and upgrd 2.1
once i started having trouble with memory and no a2sd, i bit the bullet and flashed CM6.1 and loved it, but thats when my BT trouble began. ever since then, it hasnt worked. It will pair, connect and if i receive a call the music(which works fine) will pause and the phone will ring, but when i answer it.. complete silence from both ends.
I flashed CM7.0.0(maybe 7.0.1?) beta3, thinking it would solve the problem and no luck.
After several weeks of searching i came across ELELINUX last night, read the changelogs and it said BT worked fine. so i flashed 7.1.0 RC1 v3.1 to find the exact same problem persisted.
I am out of ideas and threads to read...if ANYONE has a suggestion they think will work, i am all ears.
Thx so much for any help and sorry for my long first post.
Sounds like trouble with the roms bluetooth stack. I'd test a stock rom and see if that solves the problem. If it does, its probably the roms you're using.
Hmm ok. I just assumed that since the build said "Bluetooth working", that it would! Lol
But ok thanks man, I guess I just search for that with "stock hero rom" right?
Ill give it a whirl and see what's up. I wish someone knew of a working 2.2 Rom for hero, sheesh

Calm down, just because your problem still exists, doesn't make it our fault, or our responsibility. If anything, its your responsibility. If you want it fixed, contact the developer of the rom. If that doesn't work, try developing a fix yourself, and see the time, skill and patience it takes. Until then, quit raging against the hardworking fellows here and let us move on to bigger things. If you truly want bluetooth, you can always unroot and go back to stock to fix your problem. Beggars can't be choosers.

Music/Sound Skipping Problems on my New S3

Hi...
I have had my new Samsung Galaxy S3 for about 2 weeks, upgrading from the Samsung Europa, and I need to know if this is a known problem or there is something wrong with my phone.
I have had nothing but problems with playing music on my phone since I got it--which is one of my most primary uses for my phone. From the beginning it skipped during songs repeatedly (which I know aren't corrupt as they were and still do work perfectly fine on my Europa, which I never had any problems with), at first, I googled it, and tried turning off wifi when I listened to music and very briefly it improved. But quickly it started skipping again, and has only got worse, now, not only does it skip, it actually stops partway through every song and won't play the whole song. It sometimes plays a song and then stops even though it hasn't gotten to the end of a playlist. Now, I noticed that even playing Bejeweled, which has a very simple and repetitive soundtrack, it stutters on the soundtrack as well. I got so frustrated this morning because I couldn't listen to a full song without it stopping and refusing to re-start that I took my SDcard out and used my old Europa instead--which again, was just fine.
Is this a known problem with the S3? Did I get a lemon? I do not understand why a brand new phone should not be able to do something that my year and a half old and much less powerful Europa could do perfectly. I don't really want to try downloading a variety of other music players because I have been burned by "lemon" electronics products before, and that is basically like putting a bandaid on a wound and pretending it isn't there, when something clearly isn't working right. Any suggestions? Is this normal? Do I return it or is there something else I could try (that is not a band-aid solution).
I could be missing something as it is a new phone... I'm not new to Android or Samsung, but that does not mean I know all the ins and outs of the S3 either. I did see something about powersaving mode, and it is not on that.
Thanks very much for any help or advice you could give me, and please, if you have an S3 and you do not have this problem, let me know as well. Much appreciated!
Hi,
I just wanted to post that I'm also having this issue. It just started about 3 weeks or so ago while I was driving. I thought maybe it was because I was hitting bumps on the road or something but it also happened while listening at home. But it doesn't happen all the time which is why I can't pinpoint what the cause may be.
I downloaded the free trial of WinAmp and it worked ok for a little while but then it started doing it there too-not as frequent as the stock player but it did happen.
Anyway I'm hoping someone else might be able to help.

Try unmounting and re-mounting your SD card.
It may be an audio buffer issue, in which case try power amp, you can tweak the audio buffer size, and it has shown sound quality and features....free trial version on the market too.
skip mucis
Yeah I had that problem with a different android phone my HTC Thunderbolt. It tends to happen when I have the phone close to me. I can be wrong but I think it could be from the energy we throw off. I know it is silly but thats my opinion. I think it may be because of the way it is built. I never had that problem with any iPhone but only to android. The iPhone is is made of glass and most Android made out of plastic. If you fix your problem let me know. I like android phone and would like to know if it could be fixed.
hahaha
Panacea to audio skipping issues
I've had this issue ever since I bought the S3 (E210s).The only solution that I could find is via root. Root your phone, flash Siyah kernal and install CPU Governor app, and then just set the governor to OnDemand. That worked for me! Would probably do it for you too.

Music is skiping

Hello. A few days ago while playing music, the sound started to skip randomly and sometimes quite often leading to music stop completely.
Tried a different player, same problem. Sometimes I can play music for hour without skipping, then sometimes it starts to skip after 10 minutes.
This problem seems to be the same as described here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1677132
Phone is not rooted (yet) and is updated to 1.16 firmware.
Anyone has similar problem? Not sure if I should wait for some update or RMA the phone.
I like the phone so far (well, battery life could be better), but this being my second HOX+ (first had bad display) I can't get rid of the feeling HTC is trying really hard to get out of the business.
Edit: The problem happens when music is going through loud speaker. Beats audio off.

HTC is a good company but i still feel Samsung makes better hardware...there is a reason they are top of the food chain....but i digress....
i haven't experienced the problem u are talking about...have you tried factory reset and seen if the problem still occurs
Didn't try hard reset yet. Finally I have setup the phone to my liking and I was keeping hard-reset as the last resort solution. Though I doubt it will help.

I had this trouble with my Galaxy S3, but not with the HTC One X+...it was related to the PoweAmp EQ. I uninstalled PowerAmp, and played via the stock player. Problem solved. I'm betting its something with Beats Audio.
Now to find some wood to knock on....
Sorry I didn't mention that this problem occurs with beats audio off and when listening through the loudspeaker (I had to use loudspeaker in the car when my car radio broke and didn't yet have the time to get it fixed).

Thanks for the advice, I hate to be messing with new phone like this, but I guess I will try it.
New finding is that while the music skips, the phone is unable to wake up (turn on the screen), at best, the buttons light up but that's it. After skipping is gone, phone wakes up without a problem.

I hate to point out that one's beliefs might not be true. Samsung is like Apple. A customer wants an MP3 player they ask for an iPod...
They want a smart phone they ask for a Samsung or Galaxy phone. It is all about exposure through marketing.
On average Samsung has just as many hardware problems as any other manufacture. I work in a cell shop so I see what comes back every day.

From what you described, having the wake up issue once the sound skips, another program is causing the issue.
I am 90% sure that it is not a hardware issue. If I were you, I would have started with your last resort first (sorry ).
If the issue is still there then you might have bad memory or internal SD. If not then start installing your programs one at a time to weed out the faulty app.

Even though I'm mostly using the same programs as on my good old HD2, I really hope it will be only a sw issue. I have now made a factory reset, didn't transfer any settings, didn't even install much programs, just the bare minimum.
First 1h of drive with music over loudspeaker was without skipping. So far good, but I think I didn't have the problem right from the start (which could suggest the cause is some program I have installed later).
So far good. Even battery life has maybe tripled, so I guess and hope it was just a really bad app. Now I'm even afraid to install anything

Don't want to accuse anyone as I don't have proof yet, but I can name apps that I haven't had before on my HD2 and which probably have some kind of process that always runs.
Those apps are:
- Juice Defender (but had it disabled in the past few days as a test if it doesn't try to protect the battery too much resulting in music skipping)
- Lux Free - this feels to me like the most likely candidate
Then I haven't these, but I don't think they have always running process:
- GPS Test
- Skifta
Looking back, it's a pity I first didn't try to have a look at which apps I didn't have before and tried to uninstall them first.

Then maybe the cause was that I tried to uninstall and disable as many htc bloatware as possible and maybe some other process was relying on those uninstalled/disabled and was causing this problem.

AT&T HOX+ 1.19.502.1 Update... What's been your experience?

Alright, so I recently decided to upgrade my AT&T HTC ONE X+'s firmware to the latest 1.19.502.1 update. Ever since I got this phone, I've never really been 100% happy with it, so as soon as I saw an official update being rolled out I jumped at the chance! I re-flashed the original recovery, re-locked the bootloader and ran the HTC RUU pc executable, effectively putting my phone in a 100% stock state and fully updated.
So far I can say that the phone experiences less general app crashes than before. The Bluetooth Call audio quality issue is 100% fixed. It would also seem like the Google contacts syncing issue is gone too. AT&T Address Book app now works (I don't like it, I don't actively use it, but at least now it's a functioning app). And Power management & Battery life seemed to have improved ever so slightly.
On the other hand, the phone does seem a bit slower (apps take longer to load, some phone functions take a little bit longer to react, stuff like that). The distorted streaming via Bluetooth (A2DP) bug (not the same issue as the call audio) is still un-addressed. I've always experienced random Bluetooth connection interruptions, and with the update this hasn't changed. Another thing I was hopeful they would fix with the update and they didn't is the Automatic Time Zone option in the Date & Time settings menu (It will often not recognize my time zone - GMT -4:00 - forcing me to set it manually... no big deal, but still a bug none the less). There were no GUI/UI changes or improvements whatsoever. Also, I like to use Nova Launcher Prime, and for whatever reason I've found myself pressing the "back" button to exit some apps and it would return me to the Sense home instead of the Nova Launcher home (which is set as my default launcher). That last one is no big deal, but thought I should mention it just in case.
What about you guys? What has been your experience with it? Did you update OTA or through the RUU? Share your experiences here!
the only thing i needed from the update was fixing BT A2DP audio. Like you said, it is still broken. Highly disappointed. Hopefully a ROM will fix it soon.
The update broke a bunch of apps for me. Chrome, Google Search, and Google Drive no longer work, they crash on startup.
Other people have similar complaints, here: forums.att.com/t5/Android-Discussion-and-Support/HTC-One-X-update/td-p/3469653
This is a stock phone. So far the phone is pretty unusable without those apps.
Really annoying. AT&T hasn't said anything about it yet. Maybe I should contact HTC directly?

You can try to contact HTC directly, but from what I've read around in the forums, they aren't much help. Allow me to suggest you try running the RUU on your phone (you can download it from http://www.htc.com/us/support/news.aspx?p_id=529&p_name=htc-one-x-plus-att ). It'll fully wipe it, so make a backup of all your important stuff (contacts if they aren't cloud synced, pictures, Angry Birds scores, etc) and then run the RUU. After the initial setup, re-download/install all your main apps and see how that goes. If you do get to do this, please post here if there was a difference in your phone's behavior. (Hope that helps)
I really honestly haven't had any issues with my phone since the OTA update... I still lag on playing a simple 2D game Drag Racing" but runs butter smooth when playing 3D games.. WTH?.. Really annoying to me... but then again, it lags even when I'm using my Nexus 7, yet runs lag-free and smooth on my Pantech Burst? Explain that one.. lol..
But all in all I've noticed a lot of small enhancements with the update. Now if they can just fix the game play of Drag Racing app.. lol..
I haven't noticed anything significant either way. If I didn't do the update myself, I don't think I would know there had been one. I do have to say that I never experienced problems playing music over BT, and I use it in my car, at home, and with BT earbuds. Maybe it's because I'm using PowerAmp.

The problem is still there with poweramp. It is a bitpool setting for connection between the phone and BT speaker devices. Some people just don't hear it even though it is there. I have a few friends who are now on JB thanks to recent updates and they have the same issues but they don't seem to hear it. I can hear it plainly though. One of them I could get to hear it but he doesn't care and thinks it sounds good enough for him.

Well, I haven't tried that particular game, but try this and let me know if it works for you. Go to Settings\Developer Options\Advanced\Force GPU Rendering, and turn it on.
Disappointing feedback. I work from home and have a Plantronics Savi 700 series headset. My HOX+ is connected to the Savi via Bluetooth, and if I make/receive a call on my HOX+ the call skips/distorts for the first 5 seconds or so before stabilising. Is that a known issue?
EDIT: to clarify, I am not using the headset when making/receiving the call in my example.. it's merely just connected via Bluetooth at the time I use my cell phone.

That hasn't been my experience receiving calls (although making them, the first ring does sound louder and coarser than the rest) but there have been some posts here on the forum from people describing a similar issue (since way before the update). Apparently it's either an inconsistent issue, a bug that only affected a few handsets, or an accessory hardware specific issue (eg. compatibility issue with specific bluetooth devices).

When u say BT audio A2DP that to ke means audio controls over BT. Well this has always worked from the start for me on stock and now custom roms. Now if I use a "wired" headset then no, audio controls do not work. All I can do is deal with phone calls and play/pause music. Cannot turn volume up or down or change tracks while using a wired headset. This from my understanding is a "hardware" issue. Now as far as actual BT is concerned, every aspect has worked perfect for me since Steve007 has fixed it for us. Also it has been claimed the new ATT update fixes this BT audio quality issue to an even higher degree than what Steve did so ultimate BT fix now on new ATT update.
So what is the BT audio problem now still not working?

What you're referring to are Media and Call control over bluetooth (First part of your statement) and Bluetooth Call Audio specifically (second part of your statement. This is what Steve007's fix addresses and the new update fixes). The bug badtlc and I mentioned is specifically when streaming Music or Video Audio through bluetooth (basically any type or audio that isn't phone call related). The audio streams just fine, but with a nasty distortion in the high frequencies. Many people just don't seem to mind the distorted sound because they just don't seem to identify it. If you compare the Bluetooth audio quality vs the direct audio quality (like with an Aux cable) you will hear a noticeable difference.
bluetooth volume level issue after upgrade
I've been having the issue of too low volume on bluetooth calls in my car since the upgrade to 1.19.502.1 I used the RUU from HTC site to do the upgrade and reinstalled everything. I have to literally turn up the bluetooth volume all the way up in my car and the people on the other end complain that I'm not loud enough. Did anyone else notice anything like this?
The first time I did the OTA on a stock, locked, not rooted HOX+ I noticed some improvments, I'm not really sure might have been placebo effect, but it did break my Wi-Fi. It would stay stuck on "Turning on Wi-Fi" the slider would be slid to the on side, but say off and be grey and unaccessable. Well I had to get it replaced under warranty, the headset speaker was dead too but that happened before the update, and it came with 1.15 and I want to know how common of a problem my experience was I know of at least a couple people who have had the same thing and I'm not sure I want to try the update again on this one and have to go through replacing it again.
i dont see any updated
i am using ATT HTC onex+ on pay as you go service, my phone never saw any updates, tried to change date as many have suggested, tried *#*#checkin#*#*, tried to look up for update manually from settings, but none seem to work, my phone is in stock condition with no root/unlock etc.
any ideas?

The official updates from HTC never wipe anything from the device. They just UpDate the OS. There might brake an app and very rarely, but that's just when changing the SW version, due to app incompatibility with the new OS vers. That's just my experience with HTC over the last few years and the last few devices.
Best of luck.
