Not too sure that it matters which one you get, so long as its standard USB out. I use one and change both the HD and also an iPod from it (at different times)
works a treat. Though, I think that HTC have their own plug which has a different wiring allowing for a faster charge.

I see, the HTC charger is described as "fast charging device". Hm, now I have to decide wheter to have an additional cable or not.

Just a note/warning.
I have one of the generic car-to-usb port adapters where I use a normal USB lead and I use Tomtom on my HD and I have bluetooth enabled all the time for my car handsfree. When I use Tomtom and plug the phone in, it doesnt charge the phone, but the battery doesnt go down either. It seems that the charger I have can only just power the device with the screen/backlight always on, bluetooth and GPS. When I'm not using Tomtom and I turn the screen off when its plugged in to the car adapter it will charge the phone.
I dont have the specs to hand but from memory I think it outputs 5.2v at 1000mah, I'm going to have a look at the mains adapter I got with the phone and see what the rating is on there and look for something with a little more juice!

The one with the cigarette lighter outlet.
Just navigate to HTC and Touch HD in the 'Devices' menu on the left.
edit: You will have to choose 'Products' from the top menu first.
I use an generic USB-Car-Adapter and the original HTC USB cable. This config will load the phone slowly when turned off, but doesn't deliver enough power if IGO2008 is running.
When the phone is fully charged and I have plugged it that way in the car, The phone is empty after about 5 hours. When not plugged, it takes about 2 hours to fully drain the battery (when IGO2008 and therefore GPS is running).
Please advice me what car adapter I can use that will give me enough power to navigate indefinitely.

EDIT: I just found out, that my USB-Adapter has the specification of max. 500mA, The original HTC Charger has max. 2A. So I just gotta buy me a charger with 2A and it will probably work.

It should do as it provides 1 Amp. Normal car adapters only provide half an amp (500mA) and struggle with a Touch HD that is running Sat-Nav etc.

I gues the official HTC car adapter must kick out more than 500mA as i never had issues charging with Satnav running.

I use a Tomtom one as I know the quality is excellent and it is properly regulated. It has a 1A output and charges fine with loads running on the phone, including the display at full brightness.
Also the charger should have the two data pins connected to each other as the phone sees this and lets its charging circuit pull the full 1 Amp, it does this to protect against overloading a USB socket on a PC or hub, those only give a maximum of 500mA.
Hi kaefert, how hot does your phone get while running GPS and car charger? Just curious. My 8282 is extremely hot.
Mine gets quite hot with charging and Tomtom, but not so hot as I would worry much!

Just received "Tomtom Navigator 6 GPS Kit". Didn't test it yet as GPS, still charging.
What I noticed that it comes with the car charger that completely compatible with G-Tab. Connector size and 12V, 2A center positive.

The weird thing is that they also gave me the wall wart for the same DVD player, and it is rated at 9V 2.2A. That works perfectly for my ZT-180 tablet.

Tested Bluetooth GPS unit with G-tab... Works perfect on GAdam 1.1.1.
As of charger, I'll give it a shot later on. Will post the results.

I haven't tried my DVD car charger either because even though it fits, it has a sticker on it that says "Do not use for battery recharging".

Made an a$$ of myself.
Have to read more careful... That was input 12V, 2A... Although the plug is the right size.
Unfortunately output is 5V, 2A that does not charge the Tab....
So.... Went to Walmart and bought an inverter: "Philips" model DVDP32.
It charges Tab using regular A/C plug supplied with G-tab.
Price $20.
Now can use the Tab as GPS without draining the battery.

Intend to use CoPilot live 8.
Great GPS, have one on my HD2, windows thou.
Nice part is that you're not dependent on any connection, WiFi or 3G.
All maps are pre-loaded and updates coming regularly. It's nice to have it on the phone, but screen is small comparing to G-Tab. Otherwise NA edition costs only $19 right now, discounted from usual $26.

but I can't find copilot on my market. (read somewhere that certain apps may not show up if hardware specs aren't fulfilled)
so hopefully I'll be able to find it before the sale ends.
I downloaded CoPilot Live 8 from market.android.com . The US version is only $4.95 and it works great for me with BlueGPS on my Gtab. I am running VegaN 5.1
Got to Radio Shack and get a 12V auto adapter, they sell one that has changeable tips. There is nothing magic about the charger 12V 2A DC that's it.

As long as that won't fry the tablet in the long run, sounds like an excellent idea.
Keep in mind that cars run about 13v to 14.6v, so unless the car adapter is already doing some regulation it might be higher than 12v. Personally, to be safe, I would get a cheap auto adapter, crack it open, put a voltage regulator inside to drop it down to something closer to the charger voltage, which IIRC is 7.4v (correct me if I am wrong) The factory charger is 12v 2a, so probably the charger is exactly perfect. But then again, I'm a belt and suspenders kinda guy.
Does anyone know if it is actually fine/good to charge it off 12v? Or is it one of those things that works fine but in a few months will end up frying the internal voltage regulator for the charging circuit because it got too hot or was just at the limit of its capabilities from running at 12v?

I know, really wish it did... also wish that it had micro USB, not mini.
Now if only I could open it up and set up the USB power to raise up to the charging voltage and connect that to the charger. I doubt it has the room though. Anyone have pics of the inside?

If the auto adapter says that it has an output of 12V 2A, then that is what it will usually output. You can check the voltage fairly easily.

It is 12V 2A, I don't know where you got your information from. Why don't you just look at the specs on the power supply?

Was under the impression he was using one of the adapters that just gave you power from the car but had no form of voltage control and just a fuse. I had a friend fry a Garmin with a cheap '12 v' adapter that was just fused, so just wanted to make sure.

Thanks for the correction, I just didn't have a charger near me to check when I posted. But now I feel a lot better about car charging.
I've been looking for a car charger for my incoming tab, I'll have to check out the shack.
The cheapo' ones from places like monopice or merit line bleed off extra voltage via heat, so they are easy to fry. A good charger that has the proper regulator circuitry to output at it's given rating should not get warm when used.

Radio Shack has a 12v 2A charger with interchangable tips. The "B" tip is the one that fits, and I confirm it working. I am an idiot and didn't realize that the tip connections are polarized so I thought the charger was broken at first. Make sure to have the word "TIP" on the connector line up with the "INPUT" on the actual charger.
well..you guys are somewhat right and somewhat wrong.
the 12VDC on a car can be anywhere from 11VDC (engine off, battery low) to 14.5VDC.
Careful with some of the plugs. If they are not regulated, it's just a voltage divider resistor in the power stage and may not be current limited.
On the other hand, if it is current limited, and the tablet starts pulling 2A from a 500mA (most cell chargers) plug, you'll let out the magic smoke that makes it work.
I've got it on the docket to do a true regulated 12VDC / 2A charger as well. I'll see if I can get some cheapies and do some testing to show you guys what I'm talking about but I need to get a small controllable load.

You will be charged at much slower rate (limited to 500ma max), or not at all if your phone battery is almost dead. iPhone chargers are designed for iPhone only. You will need a Samsung auto charger (some other non-iPhone smartphone chargers may work too, just not iPhone chargers).

It will definitely work. The question with those cheap ones is, how long will it last. I usually try to find an OEM branded one like this:

Typically, chargers with USB port on it will only do slow charge. In order to support fast charge, you will need short out the data pins to allow phone to draw more than 500ma. Typically auto-chargers that comes with microUSB plug directly, such as the Samsung auto charger, will do so, asume your charger is rated to output more than 500ma.

It will be able to charge it. Keep in mind IF your iPhone USB charger max current output (5V 1000mA) is LESS than the Note's charger output, it will take longer to fully charge - but it will charge and will NOT damage the phone.
If you're looking to buy a new usb charger, look for one with the highest mA output rating since whatever device you plug into it will only draw what it needs. ie, my iPad charger is rated @ 2A/2000mA so it covers every device I own (all rated for different current inputs from 500mA up to 2000mA) and that's the only usb charger I take when I travel since I just have to switch out cables to charge other devices. On the other hand, if I only had a lower current rating usb charger, my iPad (requires 2000mA) would be out of luck.
Current output info can be found on the respective charger of your favorite device.

Looks like that charger is rated @ 700mA. It'll charge the note about 30% slower than the wall charger.

Has anyone else used the PowerGen car charger with the Note? I have a handful of other ones that all claim to fast-charge devices, but apparently it only works with iPhones and iPads. But since the PowerGen unit is on the list, can I assume people have used it and confirmed it will give me a 1A charge rate on the Note? I need a charger that can keep up with the Note occasionally drawing 1.4 A or more (display 100% brightness, GPS, LTE, Bluetooth all active, running Navigation).
A quick search for "powergen" in this forum only brings up the above thread.
Works like a champ. My battery was charging at 1600mAh while streaming soundcloud and using navigation. Definitely does the job.
I am using my car charger for galaxy tab 10.1 (2.0 amp) and it is working much better than any of the 1 amp chargers I have tried, OEM, boxwave, etc...
I also use the GT 101. 110V charging brick, so when I travel, only one brick and two cables. My experience is that the 2 amp charger works really well and will charge the phone while using GPS full time, where the OEM charger and other 1 amp chargers either maintain charge, or slightly discharge.
Thanks for the confirmation! Of course, now I discover Amazon won't ship that to Canada, and amazon.ca does not carry it. :crying: I'd go see what TELUS has to offer, but I'm sure it will be A) expensive and B) not have dual USB ports, or perhaps not even a detachable cord.
If you do find one, also buy a charge-only usb cord.

Is that still needed if the charger itself correctly supports fast charging? The cord I use now is the one from my Touchpad. I get 1 A to the Note from the AC plug, and the Touchpad gets around 1.8 A. I do also have a charge-only cable (much thinner cord, only two wires), but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

The cord from the touchpad is probably wired correctly internally for fast charge. I bought a similar dual car charger and did not see a difference with the micro usb sync cable. I only saw a difference with a charge-only micro usb cable. The phone sees what pins are connected and determines if it is going to charge in usb charge mode(<=500ma) or AC charge mode(>=500ma).

So you use the Touchpad USB micro cable to charge your Note in the car? I thought the cable is too short? I am looking for a LONG USB micro cable that is shorted so it will give >500mA.
I am planning to buy the PowerGen but I need recommendation on the CORRECT USB cable that is long enough.

Then it sounds like that car charger was an "iPad-compatible" one, i.e.: it does not have D+/D- shorted out to indicate to non-Apple devices that it is capable of more than 500 mA.

The cable is about a meter in length. I only need about half that to reach from the plug to the phone mount on the dash.

So then how does it charge fast then? If the cable isn't shorted? Motorola does the same thing. IIRC its a shorted setup to allow for fast charging. All of my USB cables come from Samsung, HP, and Motorola and I use them as data cables as well

You short the pins inside the AC adapter or car charger, rather than the cable. If I understand correctly, the danger of using a charge-only cable is if you plug it into an actual USB port that isn't designed to supply more than 500 mA. Your device could then try to pull down, say, 2000 mA and potentially damage the power supply on your laptop or desktop.

I'm using the Rocketfish 3.1A Model# RF-M657D with my Note. While using Google Nav, lowest brightness, keys backlight off, Sync off, HSPA+, the phone still loses charge (albeit, slowly). I'm assuming this is because the charger is not internally shorted between pins two and three as it is marketed as a iPad/iPhone charger. I'm using a Belkin Data/Charge cable so I know that is not shorted.
I have been doing some reading and last night, I purchased the "Satechi Smart Adapter Compatible with Samsung Galaxy S (I can't post links yet, google it.) so I will report back when I receive and pair it with the Rocketfish.
One thing I can't understand is how some of you have reported 1600mA from your car chargers. I am reading that without this adapter/cable mod, the Note will only run 460mA or so. Where/how do you get this info? Asking because I'm curious to see how my car charger does. It has usb ports rated at 2A, and I think it's 2A shared instead of per port, but want to see how it actually does when plugged in.

My rocket fish model must put out more than yours. My pic is above your post. With Google Nav, Google play music (streaming, not native music), full sync, brightness to at least 50% it only lost 4% over 30-40mins.

From what I read, your charger is an .5 amp.

Like I said, I think this phone is only pulling down 460mA without said mod and I find 1600mA to be incorrect as I read the Note will only pull down 960mA max. We'll see what this adapter does for my charge times.

They only thing I'm using is that exact setup posted. RF adapter and a Motorola atrix desktop dock charge cable.. (basically just a longer version of the standard wall charger)

OK, I lied, I'm using the OEM cable that came with the Motorola Atrix 4G, not the longer cable from the desktop dock. I just checked my car and that's the cable that's in there.

Car chargers work much slower than a wall charger because of the output of it. If you have the screen on, using gps, and listening to music at the same time it won't charge or it will actually drain.

Probably, the car charger is putting out just enough amps to activate charging mode, but not enough to charge with any discernable speed
I would look for a more reputable charger brand. I have found that cheapie chargers just don't perform well. Especially with the 2 amp requirement our devices need. A 1 amp verizon mobile charger with the micro usb factory attached and ment realistically for my wife's s3 1 amp requirement is adequate to provide a stable but long charge time for my note 2. Remember, some power distribution is lost simply in the usb connection between a cheap 1 amp charger and the usb cable plugged into it. Another useful addition for mobile charging would be an ac/dc inverter that allows your factory home 2 amp charger to plug into your vehicle. That would be reasonably clean 110 v ac to dc at 2 amp from your genuine samsung home charger. Better chance of getting the charging capacity you require. Also, don't forget to chech your usb cable. It may look fine, but could be stretched or damaged causing a bad charge connection. But definitely avoid cheap car chargers. Not only can they work sporadically, they may actually damage your phone.

I have tried charging my phone with it turned off when its charging in my car i dont use it i just let it charge but it doesnt work. Its ok not a big deal i can charge it at home and get a good day and a half on a full charge. I was just wondering if there was a way to fix it.

This, I just didn't feel like explaining it all. Also using an inverter can cause problems with strain on the electrical load of the vehicle though. If you have a big truck, they are safe to use. If you have a civic, I wouldn't use one.

I used one all the time when I had my Civic Si to power mine and a friends laptops when in town, we didn't have high speed at our houses and the provider wanted 50k to bring it, and I never experienced any issues with electrical strain. Im not saying it doesn't happen but with the newer vehicles it isn't that much of an issue.

No, just a second charger for keeping in a travel kit. Ended up getting a SIIG 2-port, each port 2.1A. Seems to do the job.

Travel Charger issues
I have purchased a third party charger similar to this, it also states 2.1a output, however after connecting it to my Note 12.2 it charges for only a few minutes and then stops charging. I've changed cables, and I've bought a different model of charger and both of them stop charging the Note 12.2 after a few minutes. Only the original Samsung charger that came with it will work, at least in the USB 3.0 port.
Has anyone else found this as well ?
Nope, have been able to use my old galaxy tab charger, nexus 7 charger, and a third party one with no issues.

I'm not sure, but reading some of the product descriptions, I get the impression that the circuit for charging an iPad is different that for other devices - I've seen a couple chargers where one USB socket was for iPad and the other for everything else.
The SIIG seems to work fine from both USB sockets.

I actually have the SIIG travel charger with two USB ports, I have found that my Note 12.2 charges when the screen is ON, but as soon as the screen goes off or if I turn the unit off via the power button, charging stops. Interestingly, using the original charge that came with it or a charger for my Galaxy Note II I dont have that issue.

Does KitKat have developer options, and the ability to leave the screen on while charging?
UPDATE: Yup, it does. Not a great workaround, though.

Well, I guess the good news is that it is not our particular units malfunctioning, but it sure seems strange..it makes no sense for the charging to require the screen to be on.. that USES more power and slows down the charging process.

I got the ionic one that came with the charger, cord, and car charger.
Time with stock charger 14% to 100% 5.5hrs
Time with ionic charger and cord 16% to 100% 5.5 hours
