My own Developer's battery door //Update 8-17 Etched member designs on pg8 - G1 Accessories

So at work I have a laser etching machine that is all computer controlled and when I'm bored I mess around with it trying to figure out what types of things I haven't etched and what kind of cool art I can etch on to stuff. Lately I've been testing the Android Developer's battery door design, and attached is what I've come up with.
For higher res pics goto http://picasaweb.google.com/juphro/batterydoor and make sure to click the "zoom in" magnifying glass.
I'm also in the process of testing the other battery door colors.
Member, baggus, actually asked me if I could try the design on his so that's why his name is on the bottom. It turned out very nice! I wanted to also see something in the Android font so that's what I came up with in the second pic in the next post. NOTE: the Android font is *not* able to be copied commercially, I have done so for my own personal use.
More information about the Android robot remixing can be found at http://www.android.com/branding.html and a supposed vector of the Android robot can be found at http://www.android.com/media/android_vector.jpg
Did you know the Android robot can be modified and reproduced freely?
If you are interested in designing your own art for a battery door or interested in how its done, just pm me
How the process works:
-Design your custom image (either png w/transparent background or vector graphic works best)
-Image must be black and white. Laser turns on for black, turns off for white.
-Make sure your image looks good on the battery door w/o resizing. Resizing causes distortion if it is not a vector. PM for the template if you're interested in actually doing this.
-Import the image into the etching program on the template which has been premeasured.
-Instead of printing to a inkjet, the image prints to an Epilog Laser Engraver
The template is too large of a file size for me to upload, so again, just pm me.
A laser shoots down on the battery door literally vaporizing a thin layer of material. How the laser cuts is based on speed an power settings determined by the operator. Each material (rubber, wood, aluminum, plastic, etc) has its own settings based on the speed an power of the laser. I have the settings for almost any material, have tested the speed and power for the G1 finally and strangely enough, the settings are different for the white G1 battery door (J Treat is donating his).
Normally, its $45 for regular customers but since I'm in charge of the machine (and personally own a G1) I would much rather charge $20. Free UPS return shipping if you live in the states. Add $3.50 for USPS international shipping. PM me for details.

Design Ideas
More pics- battery door from white G1. No custom designs on this color, sorry. Banding starts to occur in areas that have large spaces (banding example pics can be found on page 5. Its also not as smooth. Same thing happens when you print photos on a non photo printer, on non photo paper. I am also unable to etch on the curved parts of this color. It just comes out nasty/burnt lookin.
Again- designs are limited for the white G1.
Some people have asked about covering the "With Google." Without actually modifying Android Guy this is how big he would have to be to cover the words- his body is exactly as big as the words. It takes up almost the whole back.
Again, pls goto my Picasa site (above) to view more pics in original size. Other things I've etched -> http://picasaweb.google.com/team1933/lasers

Thats kinda cool. Its amazing what you can do with the right equipment.

if you do the battery door that comes on a white g1, im only a paypal click away from ordering one (seriously)
good job man, they look nice

Wow! really nice.....

yeah, let me know how i can get one made with my name please.
send me a message plz! those look F'n COOL!

Me to fellow Chicago friend!

I hate you for showing me a really cool mod for my phone that i can't do myself >:|
O well... next best thing......BUTTERKNIFE
(seriously though that looks amzing. i wish i had a laser etcher laying around)

WOW!
Thanks guys!! I'm waiting for a white g1 battery door to arrive (its like a tan color). The black one uses different settings so I have to tweak it so that it comes out right every time. When I get it just right I'll post more pics in the first thread and get you guys some more info about it.
@G1-evolve, wootroot, and regulatorg1: you got pm.

i'd probably jump on something like this too if i could get my name on it, it looks sweet

You know what would be really awesome.. is to fill in those desings with paint to give them some color. I just may have to order one to see if I can do it.

I am liking how they are looking. Most def if you get some going for the brown backing I am all aboard for this mod

I have seen color laser etchings that use a so called "color bonding" process but I have yet to see it done.

If you can etch a picture of Taylor Swift into it, ill pay.

looking sweet
i like the android guy, it would by cool if you could through an on his chest and give him a cape! LOL!

only thing that would suck on my phone is that i have the silver/tan or whatever backing on mine and im sure it would be a crazy dirt and grime magnet where its etched out.
you figure out a pricing amount and method? should i pm you for this? does it really matter if you post up a price on this thread?
also i saw on the previous post where you got started up that it wasn't lined up correctly on the silver/tan back, you got that figured out right?
I might have to get one done from you and fill in the etched part with some clear coat or something maybe even a bronze finish to go with the phone

you should buy a heap of battery doors off the net and then do custom desighns for people and sell them with like 20% profit or sumthing.
also would it be possible for you to upload template for the sketch?

I remeasured my template, and on every battery door that gets done the "with google" gets measured again after putting the battery door in the machine. Spending the extra 5mins to double check is worth not wasting a battery door. Will edit first post w/price.
@MiNdAr: the template is too large of a file size to attach but I'd be more than happy to email it.

im still working on my design, ill be shipping you my battery door probably monday or tuesday to have for when i get the design finished, glad you decided to share this service with the community man

its 2:45pm and the mail man just came and left me a brown little package outside my door!
Just wanna let everyone know that I just got my custom battery door and its looking FREAKEN NICE!
has the dev. theme on the back with my xda id on the bottom..
and it took 3days to get here after speaking with justin.
great work and i'll prob be ordering another one with different styles later on.

Replacement keyboard for G1

I made a mistake of getting the bronze G1, and have been suffering from the keyboard problem ever since. For those fortunate to have a black G1, it's when the keyboard lights up in daylight conditions the keys are impossible to see. As a work-around I use the Backlight Off program to permanently shut off the backlight, but that makes it a pain in the ass for when I actually do need it.
I was wondering if anyone attempted to replace the keys with the variant from the black G1. Also, I've seen a link to a site that sells G1 parts but can't find it anymore. Would appreciate if someone pointed me in the right direction.
Use ebay for the black keyboard.. ive seen a few people do it w/o a problem.. also for the backlight off set it as a shortcut so whenever u do need it u just hit two keys at once and bam its on (use a key that you dont need to see to know where its at)
The thread on this page about black/white custom G1 has links to an ebay seller.

do you know how horrible its goin to look when you have black g1 buttons on a silver back keyboard surround thing and a bronze g1? lol
since you are willing to void your warranty then i suggest buying the black g1 buttons and then go to colorwarepc.com
get a custom paintjob. its about 175 and take up to 3 weeks to get ur g1 back =\ go to the second website below and play around with the color schemes
i like this color scheme
MAIN : white
keyboard: purple
bottom: white
back: white
your choice tho. but i would rather deal with the keyboard visibility than having an ugly g1.
here a link to the black g1 keyboard

Hmmm a $6 keyboard and 20 minutes of assembly versus $200 and 3 weeks with no phone.

its no versus or anything..
bronze g1 with a black keyboard is just fugly. i suggested to install the black g1 keyboard and get custom paintjob to make it look nice.
Brian do you have something against everyone who changes there G1 ??
Id rather fugly than downright stupid. Paying more for a paint job than you paid for the device is retarded no matter how cute and shiny it is.
On a forum full of DIYers or guys wanting to be DIYers constantly being negative than proposing ludicrous paintsites are making you look like an ass.
Frankly if Nola was so appaled by the G1 appearance he can spend a mere 10-15$ and an hour on the net reading how-tos and repaint his whole case if he was so inclined.
My suggestion btw is get a set of small torx or borrow them. The ones I have are too large (starting with t6) and cant get a few screws open to start...grrrrr

who said i have anything against ppl changing up the g1. i only bashed on that one guy. all i said was his g1 trackball install pic was fake and he bashed on me.
and all i did here was suggest a paintjob after keyboard mod. its your preference choosing not to have a nice looking g1. i rather have a nice one. its not stupid or retarded to have a nice looking g1(again ur preference). in a society that i live in, aesthetics and appearance goes a long way. and people with money can use money.
and how am i CONSTANTLY being negative. i only was negative on that beaners thread because he started with me. and he never ever posted video proof.
and i actually had an idea to order a g1 housing n such ,and send it to a car paint and body place(i alrdy called and they said they do it for me for cheap) i probably decided on electron blue or pearl white.
Thats 2 for 2 on housing color threads you instigate.
Maybe youre quite the charmer in app threads but so far I have no idea why you say what you do.
Again for 175 the thing better sparkle with diamonds and have a handjob app. A paint job shouldnt cost more then the device regardless of your financial status.
Noone said a thing about a nice looking G1. But $175 is ridiculous.
Good luck on your paint job.

i didnt even instigate this thread. all i did was suggest and said having the black keyboard on a bronze g1 is just hideous.
and the guy i bashed on about his trackball wasnt a housing thread. all he did was get a white battery cover and change the keyboard. those things are not hard to do.
and everyone is entitled to their opinion. i just think getting a paintjob would make the thread starter g1 look better.
No more bashing, Thread Closed!

Eris Paint Job?

Screen hardness test guy here again.
I'm thinking about trying out that old trick for the Touch Pro 2 using RIT dye to color my Eris.
It's the same stuff, so I figure it'll work in terms of dying, but....
The Eris is black as all hell.
Does anyone think the RIT dye remover will work to lighten the Eris so I can experiment with other colors?
In return for any help, I'll post a well illustrated guide for you guys so that you might follow in my footsteps and customize your color.

I don't know, but at a few bucks a shot, it couldn't hurt, right?
RIT dye is just.. you will have a TOUGH time dying something as dark as the eris.
actually... now that I look at it, the eris is pretty light, it's actually more of a gray... out of the box you should be able to tint it pretty well, give it a nice sheen of color, but i mean... your not going to make the thing bright green or anything like that, without doing something drastic you'd be able to tint pretty well.
as far as lightening something goes... I have never done it. I do a lot of professional modding for gadgets and game consoles and pc's, if I ever do a costume color I buy a white case first and die that to replace the stock black case on whatever it is (I did this for some original x-box and the PS3's). the only time I've died something black was the plastic shell of a guitar amp, and it was a pretty light gray. t came out nice looking, but a little darker then what the costumer wanted.
oh and "RIT dye remover"... it wont work on plastic. the dye in plastic is bonded to it on a molecular level, you would have to find something a LOT more powerful.
Royal Blue RIT dye basically just removed the sparkles, MAYBE added a slight blue tint, but not really.
Also, my cover warped and I can't get it to go on correctly. :V
Don't try this at home, kids. Ever.
Guess I've got even more reason to save up for another phone now.
Too bad I have no money.

finding tablet buttons in the dark

I usually just lurk on these forums as I am completely new to android and still just getting to barely understand the basics. To thank everyone here for this tremendous redource, i wanted to share my solution forfinding the tablet buttons in the dark . I have some 1/8th automotive pinstriping that I use to mark my rock climbing gear. It's very durable but can easily be chipped off with a fingernail without leaving any residue. It's also thick enough that you can easily feel it with your fingertip. I put strips running from front to back in line where each button sits with a tiny bit overhanging the lip on the screen. if you cut it right you can feel the edge if you run your finger along the lip but it won't peel off if you get it right. Just be careful if you clean the screen with a microfiber cloth because it will snag on the edges. So noe ican feel where the buttons line up in the dark and my g tab has some wicked yet functional racing stripes. I went with reflective orange. i hear it adds a couple of ghz to the processor speed like flourescent paint adds hp to civics.
I hope someone finds this useful. I wouldn't have bothered buying this tablet if I hadn't learned from this forum about all the cool stuff i could do, and since have done to it. Many thanks to all of you for your hard work and continued enthusiasim.
I'm actually used to where the buttons are. I don't need to see them anymore to use them. In the dark, I hit it 95% of the time first time nowadays.
hey, i think that's a great idea. a fix that will work for users who don't want to mod the gtab in order to add LEDs.
would an autoparts store have that 1/8in pinstripe? i wonder how well it would go on over a skinomi?
@ffastfzr
Could you post some pics? Id really like to see what this looks like. It sounds like a great idea.
I'll see what I can do
The pinstriping is available at auto parts stores. It will stick to a clear coat on a car and pretty much anything you else you stick it to. So it should stick to a skin. I ordered mine online because I wanted highly reflective bright orange. Like I said I had it for my rock climbing gear. you get a distinctive color and size and then you wrap a little stripe on each piece of your gear like carabiners so your climbing partners don't walk away with them. The joke is that you trust your partners to hold the rope and potentially save your life, but you don't trust them to not walk off with your gear.
I'll take a couple of pics and post as soon as I can. My firm is having networking issues and I am about to get kicked offline until this evening.
pics of pinstriping
Sorry, DISASTER at work followed up with a case of lyme disease complete with 2 weeks worth of industrial strength antibiotics. My luck could certainly be better. Anyway, pics are attached. Sorry they aren't they greatest.
Button Savior is alot easier
button savior is nice. I also find that in the dark, hitting the back button is easy if you just put your thumb on the side of the screen and just slide it up. When it hits the back button, just stop

Button savoir combined with Quick Boot, both free in the market can handle all the process of both the soft keys and the power button functions easily..
I like this Idea, if I switch to a rom other than VEGAn Ginger which has soft keys on the bottom I may try it out.

Graphics Skins for Gtab..$10.95.. lots of selection

Found this the other day in my parousing for accesories for the tab but noticed it hadn't been posted here.... decent selection, close to 300 designs.... Stupid cheap... about time i've been looking for a while for more than just the carbon fiber ones.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ViewSonic-G-Tab...tem2a11553fb8&clk_rvr_id=245990579742&afsrc=1
I ordered one of these and in discussion if they had any alternative's that had more of an astronomy type back ground the person i was in email contact with indicated they could make these as customs with a pic that you provided. If that interests any one contact them and see what they might could do for you.
Holy macaroni.
http://www.ridicgraphics.com/2011/designs/viewsonicgtablet/
The first thing I noticed is that 99% of these "skins" are in portrait mode. I use my gTab in mostly landscape mode.
The second thing I noticed is that there is no link to the wallpapers for these "G-Tablet Skins" for you to download and use to blend with the skin on the bezel of the gTab after you purchase and apply one of these. I saw there are wallpaper links for other devices but couldn't find one for the gTab.
So this may be exciting for some folks but I didn't find it useful. What I would find interesting would be skins that could look good in either portrait or landscape mode (like the carbon fiber skin I already have).
Also, since I have my gTab in a CLIP case about 85% of the time I seldom think about the skins anymore.
If you want the skin in landscape just ask them. I'm sure they'll accomodate they offered me the ability to make a cutom from a pic that i sent them... i wanted an astronomy theme.. but decided on #246 ...
the back ground.. you download the one for the NOOK color list under "ebooks"... it's an android tablet after all... (you'll have to do some creative cropping to get it to fit right)
I can't find a way to lock the wallpaper in landscape, is that possible? In other words, I want to be able to use my tablet in portraite mode but have the wallpaper still be in landscape mode so it still matches the skin.
I havn't figured out a way... may be there is an app that allows you to have multiple wallpapers... one for landscape and one for portrait...I remember seeing something along those lines somewhere... it may be a feature that is specific to certian Launchers also.. did a quick search and there was an app but it wasn't rated very well...

yeah i saw that somewhere too i thinks its something like multipicturelive or something.......
HOLY COW!!!!!
If the selection from the Ebay dealer listed above wasn't quiet what you're looking for.. a shlew of skins turned up in a search on Amazon this AM... check it out... a bit more pricey.. $17.95 ,still not bad compared to the $30 selection we used to have.... but a TON more designs......
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_n...VIEWSONIC+GTABLET+SKIN&ie=UTF8&qid=1310642213
Did anyone get theirs made? How did it come out? Does it cover the sides like the carbon fibers do? I only ask because I just bought a P3 case on eBay and everything's going to be covered (even the left speaker ) except the sides where the power button is and the other side. Thanks if anyone can help
has anyone gotten these yet and tried them out? i really want to know about the quality and stuff cuase i was interested
I got #246 the grill looking one from the ebay store.. and no it doesn't cover the sides.. there is about a 1/16 inch (1.5mm) around the perimiter on both the front and back... wich is desirable on the back, keeps it from picking up and collecting dust and swarf... the front is ok.. i would look better benig all the way out to the edge.. but the guys at ridic graphics (ebay store) said that they were having issues with people stretching them while they were putting them on that's why they cut the perimiter in a bit.. graphics look pretty good.. not grainny at all... applied easy enough, though a second set of hands made it easier, someone holding the skin up while you locate it is ideal...... over all i'm satisfied...
thinking of seriously getting one from the amazon store because of the astronomy backround selections they have.. if i do i'll comment on them as well...
About time someone started making these. Anyone have a picture of the fit quality once its installed?
I posted some pics in my original thread on Android tablets forum...
they show the bo-bo'd bezel cut line but Ridic graphics sent me a replacement that makes the gap around the top skin more uniform..

I painted over the glossy black

I first experimented with a few different colors on my old nexus s 4g, and settled on Krylon Fusion Buttercream for my new EVO.
It works for me.
Looks nice!
"We're coming from a pure power source."
I hope the paint doesn't have any conductive properties (many do).
white? lol
In my opinion I dislike it. But the paint job looks well done. I am not daring enough to do that.

Looks good, but I'd be interested to find a matching matte black like the bottom. I have a couple friends who are auto painters, so I might have it done when I get mine. We'll see. The shiny black might grow on me.
Looks great aside from the color. Try flat black
What the glossy plastic wasn't ugly enough? LOL
Hey as long as you like it that's all that matters!
To each his own. I don't know why people want to mess with the top part so bad. I think it looks fantastic just the way it is.
But that doesn't look that bad. Could've gone with a dark purple though.

I think it looks nice in its own way how did u do it op? Nvu gonna try a diff color?

Thank you! I think I'm the only one that things the contrasting colors AND contrasting surfaces (matte/glossy) on the back is hot. Didn't anyone learn anything in Art class? Contrast people.
I teach HS and already, day 2 of having it, people are saying "Oh wow what is that? That is live!" Instead of "That looks like every other phone."
While the paintjob is well done, I don't agree with the choice of color. Did you at least sand the cover before you painted?

I agree. I think they pulled off the contrast very well, particular because of the red band. But your right. The phone looks sleek and different, but in a good way.
What I also like is that it was a bold design move. Not many are willing to break the conceptual mold that a phone is suppose to look like.
Do a test, go out in public, whip out the phone with its huge screen and contrasting back with a red band. People notice. What is that? Damn straight.

I did sand it first as I was following a post from another thread, and intended to just leave it sanded. I didn't like the result. Mine didn't look as good as the posted sanded phone, so I painted it.
I didn't mind the glossy black color at all, just hated the constant fingerprints. My old glossy black backed nexus didnd't seem to leave fingerprints as bad this EVO.
Believe me when I say that I had no intention of going the "buttercream" route at all. I had 4 colors of Krylon Fusion in the house and tried them all on my old Nexus S. Flat black, satin white, buttercream, and a light green.
For some reason the buttercream in person looked best to me, and best of all, no more fingerprints. I don't mind the derogatory comments posted by some as my wife gave me crap too before seeing the finished phone. The photo was taken from my work blackberry so it isn't the best and looks much better live.
I just thought I would post it as so many talk about changing the back, yet nobody has/does....... well I did for better or worse.

nice job
not lol
but yea it does look like crap. white red and black?
yea I dont like the factory shiney top part either. I will probably just sand blast it at work to give it a matte finish
What kills me about this photo is the phone is sitting on top of a case.SMH
Just busting your balls OP.. Although I wouldn't a painted it that color, it wasn't my choice. Good job
