Where does the android application install to? - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry, i am a noob in Android OS. Just wondering where does the application install to? If it installs to the SD card, what would happen if i change the SD card to a new one? Anyway to back up?
thanks

All apps install to the phone so you're OK there, but some apps have caches or maps or folders on the SD so you do need to have a card present really.
You can install apps from apk packages stored on the SD (Like installer packages) but the app unpacks to the fone memory.
Daisy

thanks.
Does it mean the phone will run out of storage faster if i keep installing applications? Compare to Windows mobile, i can choose to install to memory card instead of using phone memory/storage. Is there anyway i can do this?

LOL Well, I can't say for sure on hero, but on the Magic which is VERY similar there's about 290 megs available for apps on the phone after a full wipe - I have around 50 apps on mine ranging from a few KB to 15mb for co pilot and I've used 80mb of space leaving another 200+ or so.... - The apps for the most part are small - media etc is stored on SD so you likely won't have much of a problem.
Also since stuff is accessible on the fly from the market, there are some things you can get and install in mins on your fone when you need em, then uninstall afterwards... Knowing you can get them at any time from the market.

cheers for the quick reply. Much appreciated.

SOO the hero can not install apps to SD card
thats a bad news
what if we want to store a gameboy advance game or a sega mega drive or any other game in the hero ?
one gameboy advance game = 16mb
one sega mega drive game = 2,5,7mb
other games = 1 to 15mb
that mean the phone will run out of storage

what about apps2sd that can be downloaded from this forum?

i don't think apps2sd works without the phone being rooted first.
i think i saw a rooting thread in the hero android development forum....

I would've thought that in most cases, the emulator would need to exist on the phone itself, but the ROMs (i.e. games) could be loaded in from sd card.

Think this is correct. I've not tried emulators yet but I do have DOOM and the game app is installed to the built in phone storage but the main bulk (.wads and sound files) are all on the sd card so in theory 280ish mb should do u fine as long as ur using a micro sd card

Is that mean I have to root the Hero first?
I thought Hero already come with the option where to install the apps...
Now I'm not sure whether I want to move to Hero or stay using Magic with "perfected" SPL (this SPL gives me headache)

yes, you would have to root any device apart from the dev phones maybe....
HTC will not sell a device that is already rooted, as they want people to use it how they designed it, and not allow people who don't knwo what they're doing to bugger it up accidentally.
no doubt it'll get fully rooted soon.

From what i'v heard the phone has to be rooted first, which hasn't been done yet.
I may be wrong though.
Surely not much of an issue with the larger space for apps anyway. Needs root, but once that's there, I'm sure A2SD will follow.

you can download apps from the web put them on your sd card and install them to your phone (they stay on sd card) with out root. go to the market download "appsinstaller"
go to Settings>Applications> Check Unknown sources and your ready to go.
you just put .apk files on your sd card and open the app. thats it
Yes you can install .apk files from SD and yes the .apk files stay on your SD card to install them another time,
but the apps are not running from SD card, nor are they installed on your SD card, they install onto your fone, and take up fone memory.
UNLESS you get root and run an Apps 2 SD type application.

This question isalso very important for me before Buying such an expensive phone!
Any good news or still impossible? Because i read everywhere then with a rooted Hero it is still not possible to install on SD cards.
Never impossible!! Its android not apple... > However, I reckon Aps 2 SD will be done on the hero at some point - rooting is already there.
Point of info - The Hero has around 150MB of space left for apps after a factory reset. The Magic has 295MB with the standard ROM - HUGE difference isn't it and I was gobsmacked, so maybe apps2SD is more needed than I thought on Hero....
That said, the hero ROM has a lot of stuff in the ROM that has to be added on Magic - twitter apps and widgets, Weather apps and widgets, sense UI, Loads of other pretty but big widgets built in. I may start to look at anything I can remove using Root Explorer - I never use the built in You Tube App, Footprints looks like it can go (10mb big I think..) and a few others...
Daisy xxx
Well Hero Has been Rooted Already and i mean its just a matter of time until developers gets started on their work.
Apps2sd has been done for both the G1 and the HTC magic and soon the Hero as it is 100% Possible.
btw. just like Dayzee said the phone already has a good amount of space for apps. or at least i dont see the need for it.

[Q] Gameloft Games on XMP

Hello
Right, a few questions.
Wanting to download a few games to my phone for obvious reasons. However have become confused after reading different things on different webistes.
For Gameloft games (I will use Asphalt 6 as an example) you are meant to according to most websites, download the .apk and SD card files from your laptop to save time for your device. However, I have been confused at a few things.
1) After installing the .apk, are the SD files not meant to go onto your Micro SDHC card? If so, what are all the patches around for?
2) I need the games on my SD card, not internal memory, is this just a case of what I have stated above?
3) How do I verify these games? I have seen 2 videos on YouTube but they do not make sense. After downloading the SD card data, do I just say No when it asks me to download via WiFi, and the game will run? Or is there a more complex process
Thanks a lot to anyone who answers

Downloading .apk files from internet is quite unsecure, you never know if you get correct game or not, virus or not, full of sh*t or not.
SD data goes on your SD card indeed, location varies with the game.
Some games check your Market account first, if you have bought it or not. If not...too bad, no fun for you. Some patches(LuckyPatcher) is used to change the Market license, so that game sees you bought it.
Last question. As I said, the location varies with the game. If it asks you to download files, you don't have the SD data in the correct location. Try to match the folder in .zip/.rar file(downloaded SD data) to the folder on your SDcard Android\data folder or just data folder on your sdcard.
EDIT: Forgot one question.
Install games first in internal memory, then you can move these to SDcard. SD data is anyway on SD, so no internal memory is used for it.
Thanks for that
So I don't need to verify any Gameloft games at all?
As in as long as everything is in the right location it will just open as normal?
Thanks

Stable android rom?

I´m trying to make up my mind about getting this or not. I have some doubts:
1 - Is there a stable available rom that will let me experience the full android experience instead of the default "cropped" version that comes with it?
2 - With this rom will I be able to use the Nooks' internal 16gb as well as the micro sd card I plan to use?
3 - My main use for it is reading but when I travel I would very much like to copy a bunch of movies into a 32gb micro sd card to watch. Is this possible?
cm7 is nice but so are any of the other roms such as the MIUI ones
cm7 is more widely used so there is obviously going to be much more support.
Get the B&N app from the market or get the kindle one XD
Cm7 was simple to use
I thought I would add,
1 - cm7, the method of booting from sd card to run it, was very easy for me to get working when my nt decided it would spontaneously go into factory reset mode and fail to complete. Ran great, just have to figure out how to partition sd card to allow for a bit more storage available. I, however, have not tried internal method.
Just adding my meager experience, too much of a newb to offer any more info hope it helps more than stinkies the thread

1.) CM7 is certainly the most stable. You just need to decide if you want to run it internally or from a microSD card.
2.) You will have to either take your NT into Barnes and Noble and have them repartition halfway for you OR you could do the repartitioning yourself and get all the internal storage availabe for you to use.
3.) As long as the movies are in some kind of normal format, you should be fine.

If you need to allocate the rest of the space of your SD card, use either MiniTool Partition Wizard or EASEUS Partition Master to extend the 4th partition of the SD card. Let us know if you get stuck.
Cm7 is stable thigh patiently waiting for Cm9 to settle. netflicks works fine in 7 and Mv player is great for watching movies.

Thanks guys.
One more doubt. If I root it can I install any app from the google play store? Other then reading books I just want to be able to install mozilla, gmail and moboplayer. Do I really need to install a different rom to be able to do this? Frankly, I would prefer to simply be able to install these apps (maybe a different launcher, but this is not a must like the 3 apps I´ve mentioned).
All of those apps should show up in the play store just fine. For some apps you may need to modify the build.prop file for them to show up in the play store or sideload the apks.
Sideloading is possible I believe in the later versions of the B&N OS, but it can be a pain. Sideloading in 1.4.0 though is as simple as getting the apk for an app and installing it (much as you would on windows with a .exe file).
You mean I can install these 3 apps on the Nook straight from the google play store?? Isn´t the Nook Tablet full of restraints like the Kindle that won´t allow you to download apps from the google play store?
Nope
No, I there are no restrictions except for game loft games. They require the device name to be compatible and on their list. But you can easily go around that.
Other than that, it is a normal tablet

From what I remember, with update 1.4.1 and up you cannot sideload apps (i.e. install from anywhere but B&N app store).
There are ways around it but they are tedious. Best bet if you want stock is to revert to 1.4.0.

Insufficient space to install applications

Question: If I have 12.38 GB of internal storage space on applications and hold only 1.00 GB, why when I download new applications tells me there's no room?
Hello,
Maybe try CM9 4.0.4 , never had any issues with storage space, maybe hardware problem?

When you downloading apps from tablet(Folio100) says out of space.(You have 14GB free space on your INTERNAL SD).Yes? Try cleaning "Dalvik cache" via recovery or delete everything via fastboot: erase userdata, system, cache, linux, recovery and flash recovery and ROM.

Everything is going well? Do you mean that now you can move applications to the SD card? If you still don't have that option, like me, then you haven't solved the problem, you just temporarily freed some space.
I have tried a couple of solutions I read on this forum weeks ago, one is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1492081
and another one I can't find the link but it required creating an ext4 partition on the SD card (and my Folio wouldn't load Android anymore)
I have not solved the problem: I have understood. Now I know that I have only the first GB for applications and the rest to mp3, avi, epub, etc. etc.
Greetings.

Some research in the DEV-forums could've given you sufficient information on the subject... The latest Android ROMS cope with insufficient space on the application partition. The new ROMS will use a different partitioning scheme which leaves you with less room to store files, but a little bit more room to install applications...

I've been trying to figure out just how to root this thing. I picked one up on sale, and while limited, it seems alright for the price. That 1GB app install storage partition is super annoying though. I'm willing ti live with it but only if I can root the thing... What method did you use to root it???
I used Kingo root, you have to install the SDK drivers and roots it. I've installed xposed moduals they work fine as well. Where I'm stuck is how to install a custom recovery like cwm or twrp. Any help on this from someone would be appreciated. Not much info for this tablet. On a side note is there any cm ROMs for this tab.
For what it's worth, I was eventually able to root the thing without having to locate a compatible ROM by using a free windows application called MoboGenie .. once the program is installed and loaded on your Windows PC, connect the device via USB, and give it about 5-10 minutes to find and install the driver it needs (MoboGenie did this all automatically, just took a little time). Once it does, it should start populating the screen with details about the connected device. In the Toolbox section (down the left side), there is a "Root" button. Click it and then confirm and it pushes SU onto the device automatically... Takes about 2 minutes. Then you disconnect the device and reboot it... After that, it's persistently rooted! You can even unroot by following the same steps in MoboGenie (if you click on "Root" again and confirm, it simply removes the root from the device - too easy!)
I tried it (just for fun) with a Samsung Note 3, but MoboGenie could not root that device, so clearly its powers are limited; however it works perfectly with the Hipstreet Phoenix, so I'm happy

Oh and to help conserve precious app data space, I found that, after rooting, the Lucky Patcher app does a seamless job of moving app data "to sd card" which basically results in moving the data to the larger partition. You can do this as a batch action in Lucky Patcher, or one by one.
One note though - I foolishly bought a 32GB microSD card to leave in the tablet full time, but the tablet unmounts the damn thing pretty much any time it's put on standby, and you have to deliberately tell it to mount the card every time you want to use it. This means it's hopeless for putting app data onto a microSD card on these tablets... which sucks, but oh well.
Next time, I'm buying a Samsung Galaxy Note tablet... they're by far the best tablets (and phones) on the market, and though they're not cheap, you definitely get what you pay for!

That's why I ended up using Mobogenie -- couldn't find a ROM that worked with it.
On a side note, the first Phoenix tablet I had, after rooting with Mobogenie, I used Android Tuner and applied the Partition Trim function.. it seemed to work until I rebooted the device and it went into an infinite boot loop. Seems the device is REALLY easy to corrupt, and the trim effectively bricked it. I contacted Hipstreet and got them to replace it under warrantee (cost me nothing, too). Just if you DO go that route, don't mention what you did, just tell them it bricked itself.

Ok
1st off I just bought my 1st tablet and it was this one. I instantly fell in love with it thinking I had found some great deal. Then after having it for about a week I started getting the insufficient storage message. I was about to return it when I found this thread. I used mobogenie to root it. THIS WAS SO EASY especially since I'm a noob. I installed lucky patcher from google play store but it didnt give me the option to move to sd card. So I used Link2SD. Which works fine on all the apps I have downloaded but not the apps native to the OS.
So my questions are
How do I get rid of the apps native to the OS? And/or move them to the external SD which the device calls NAND flash.
Even with moving the apps to SD which is the partitioned storage space(NAND Flash) I can only download apps to the limited internal storage before I can then move them using LinkSD. So say I want to download hearthstone which is 707 mb, and too large for the internal storage space. Is there a way to download it to the NAND Falsh section directly?
I also bought a external 64GB sd card cause one of my friends said that would fix the problem. How do I download a large game directly to that with this Tablet?
Am I asking too much of this tablet? Should I just keep it for a bit to get used to tablets then upgrade to a more expensive monster in a few months? Im having so much fun so far messing with it I kind of just it to be my Frankenstein and play with it till it breaks......errr I mean Bricks.
Please help me get my nerd on,
Im officially a enthusiast

I use TitaniumBackup with my rooted device. It makes freezing, detaching from market (so they won't update themelves), and removing system apps really easy.

I have found no ways to re-allocate the app space partition and yeah, large apps are never going to install, but smaller apps seem to work as long as we move to SD immediately after any installs or updates.

You cannot. I did the same thing, but I find you have to MANUALLY mount the SD card every time you want to access it - as soon as you put it to sleep, it unmounts the damn external card. This makes it USELESS for app installs... just data like videos, music, etc... even then, it's a pain.

Sadly, yes I think so... I like mine, too, but compared to my Note 2 phone, it's a little pathetic

You're lucky then I contacted support through that lame-ass support app that only sometimes connects to their system, and was told point-blank that there is no way to re-allocate the install space (the 1gb area) to make more basic room.
In the end, I disabled all automatic Play updating for all apps (I check and apply them manually instead, as it eats precious install space.) I use LuckyPatcher for moving all app to SD one installed, and TitaniumBackup to remove unnecessary pre-installed stuff. Bummer is, no big games, ever..
Hello all.
I am having the same issues.
I have a 16GB Phoenix Hipstreet, stuck in a boot loop.
I can't load TWRP or anything else, as I am a novice user..
However, that program MOBOGENIE sounds like what I need, however after searching everywhere, I can't find a trust worthy looking source to download, as many have been de-listed due to not being supported or something anymore.
This sounds like it would fix my problems in a heart beat.
Does any one have access to an installer?
I've tried all I can think of.
Thanks in advance.
