Wifi/Bluetooth tethering with MacBook - impossible? - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I tried several tools (aNetShare, tetherBlu, Wifi tether) but I can't tether my MacBook to my Hero!
Bluetooth: my Mac is telling me, that no additional BT-service is available except the speakers. I.e. no PAN is available.
Wifi: my Mac shows me the Hero as an access point. But connecting to it has no effect, neither on the Hero neither on my MacBook (except the wifi-icon on the mac is changing to a small console, but greyed out).
Of course, I have rooted my Hero and it's working (tried with several tools). Is tethering Hero and MacBook an impossible mission?

Android doesn't support PAN, only HFP and A2DP.
I haven't tried the apps you mention. DO any of them specifically say that they add PAN to the device?

I'm not familiar with this bluetooth stuff, but with other phones, my MacBook tethers over bluetooth with PAN connection. That's why I assumed that type of connection here, too.

No, not possible with Android.
Like i said, the Android OS only supports HFP and A2DP. If those apps do not specifically add the PAN profile to the hero, and i very much doubt that they do, then you're not gonna get anywhere.
If you need to use the phone as a modem with your mac, you're S.O.L with android!

I have messed around trying to tether my Hero with my Mac book air for a couple of weeks and tried pretty much everthing without any sucess. All the wifi tether apps out there dont seem to like macs and bluetooth failed too.
In the end I found a working solution but its not ideal - however it does work.
Installed Pararellls desktop ( Vmware would probably work too if it has good USB support - never tried it)
Installed windows XP as virtual OS
Installed PDAnet for windows ( mac version doesnt exist )
Installed Phone drivers under windows virtual machine
So now I run windows as virtual machine to tether my HTC hero with my Mac, it works well most of the time, unless the connection is dropped then Pdanet cant see the internet connection any more and requires an OS reboot.
I hope this saves some of you guys the time I lost

naaa.. get the modaco custom rom.
the android-wifi-tether app issue is present for macs and pcs, it is actually do to the hero itself and not your computer, you need to get the custom rom (awifiteth comes pre-installed) and that works perfectly on my macbook!
the custom rom adds iptable support and so it now works..

Is it not possible to make an app that injects this code into the official firmware running Hero's ?
Also, I guess the telco's are helping ensure the manufactures disable any possible way to tether as they have no current mechanism to charge for it unless you buy one of their dongles and pay though the nose for another contract

No, the official firmware is "non-rooted," meaning that you and your downloaded apps won't be able to access the Linux system on a read-write basis, which is necessary for tethering apps, as they likely all need to change the iptables to alter the way network routing occurs within the phone.

But possible once someone works out how to root the latest firmware ?
If someone does this, I would pay gladly for the app if it allowed me to use the Hero as a 3G/HSDPA modem.

Does anyone manage to get USB tether working using any one of the ROM?
This was touched on briefly in another thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842842), but mostly on wifi tether, and I have not seen any recent posts on this topic. I want to use the gtablet for school and work and USB tethering would be an absolute necessity; any help and assistance on this would be most apprecative.
There are only drivers for Windows, Mac and Linux for USB tether, so doubtful it would work. I tried it anyway, even though I knew the result. Still can not get wifi tether to work.

Sorry, I've been swamped last few days... well the last month actually... but Send me your current /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf file as I can use your current saved networks to build you a working set of files for wifi tether... I'll PM you my email in case I didn't already...
I'm not sure what usb host support has been built so far. My understanding is that in theory the linux network driver should be able to be used in android with some work ofcourse.
I'm not going to root my Gtablet right away so I'll have to wait to see if someone figures out how to wire/wireless tether while it's stock. My rooted Droid 1 is getting bored. LOL

I know this is an old thread, I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with USB tethering at all.
+1 interest in this, or bluetooth tethering. My company is PCI compliant and has wifi blockers all over the building
does ad-hoc run over the same frequencies as wifi?
Client devices that use ad-hoc wifi are licensed for the same FCC spectrum as devices that only use infrastructure wifi, so that makes me assume they use the same frequencies.
I'm only aware of two tethering solutions on android yet, but i'm a noob so there may be more:
1) the wpa supplicant patch. This allows the Android device to tether as a client to another adhoc wifi sharing device.
2) pdanet. This allows the Android device to tether as a server to another non-android client, via bluetooth or USB.
So far, nothing I've seen supports USB tethering client on Android. For now, with your use case I'd recommend a more mature OS like WinXP. With the right software, WinXP can serve as a USB tether client to most modern phones.

Same here. I use ICS via USB tethering from my HTC Touch Diamond to my PC and will get a gTablet when I can use it similarly as a client.

All of us married folk who are pushed for both time and money (but are still tech adventurous) would love some clear directions (or a script or app) for tethering to their DUN capable regular phones by either BT or USB.

I concur on this. I use PDAnet with my original droid to tether to laptop. Unfortunately, PDAnet can't be used on Vegan Ginger which I am running on my gTab. Any help would be much appreciated!

From my searching thru Google I found out that the original Droid can bluetooth tether to the Xoom. Not to sure what gives the ability for that to happen but it works. If it's code specific then maybe some tinkering with that might get it to work but if it's hardware specific..again I'm just throwing it out there.
BT tethering is very doable depending on your phone. I use PDANET on my Droid X.

[Q] how to tether G-tablet?

Before I buy a G-tablet, one of my major requirement is to be able to tether via my WM6.1 phones (htc mogul and htc 8525).
The 3 options from the WM phones are 1) built-in DUN USB 2) built-in DUN BT 3) WMwifirouter.
I've been digging through the xda forums and it seems like there are no standard ways to use any of these 3 options.
Specifically:
For USB method, android does not have the required drivers.
For BT method, android does not have a built-in BT tether profile.
For wifirouter, android does not allow ad-hoc wifi connections.
There are some work around threads, like for ad-hoc wifi tether the kyros tablet is doing this with limited success:

btw, its a bit difficult searching for this because most threads are about tether FROM an android device. In this case, we need to tether TO an android device.
I tether with wmwifirouter without problems using a touch pro 2 on sprint.
The G tablet will connect via ad-hoc with an easy fix, if you do a search on the forums there's an update zip you can apply to stock to enable it, or all the custom ROM's have the ability built in. I use mine daily running on my Droid 1 using wireless tether.
I am running stock 3389 with the gapps enhancement, and once I rooted my work droid x and installed wifi tether, my gtab found it with no issues and connected to it once i set up the wep key. Now I have to see what Verizon is going to do if my account on our corporate account exceeds some sort of data limit since we are not paying them for the wifi tethering/high data rate for my one account. Others have been upgraded accordingly as need arises, so I guess I will see what happens.

PdaNet tethering on my jailbroken iPhone 3g works after I flashed VEGAn-TAB GINGEREDITION on my G tab. My G tab had no problem recognizing PdaNet on my iPhone. Woohoo!
I am also looking for a solution tethering my blackberry bold to gtab. I had tried several methods but no luck so far. We probably need BT tether profile for Gtab. Not sure if someone can porting Archos' BT profile to gtab.
Seems I need to set up the android phone to act as a wifi hotspot. I am using a Viewpoint gtab with Vegan 5.1. I am guessing the the gtab is ready to receive/interact, but the phone needs something.
I have DL easy-tether for the phone and it asks me to DL for the "computer" offering Windows, Mac, Unbuntu and Fedora.
If I have easy-tether on my andriod phone (Motorolo Atrexx), is that enough to establish a connection with the gtab? If so, how? If not, what do I need to do?
The phone has not been flashed with a new rom.

Windows 7 - ad hoc connection

Hi,
I created ad hoc connection on my Windows 7. But my galaxy s3 can't detect it.
I tried both using Wi-Fi Direct feature, and regular WiFi. But S3 doesn't see that ad-hoc connection.
Why ? Anyone was able to do that ?

Most Android phones can't see Ad-hoc connections due to limitations (too many issues) in the underlying Linux library and service.
CM9 can see and use it just fine, and there is a fix for most other phones.
Roughly 9% of all computers are capable of running the network card in Host-mode and not only adhoc, so try using Connectify which builds a true Wifi accesspoint.
If it's only to share data between the phone and computer, you can afaik also use the Wifi AP in the phone to connect both.
I've been trying every fix I can find for S3 but everything breaks the Wifi connection, so does anyone know any way to get it working? Because obviously you can setup most routers not to use Ad Hoc but I tried to tether to some Symbian phones but they can only create an Ad Hoc connection.

Most routers actually WONT use ad-hoc unless specially configured to do so. And many don't even know the concept of mesh networks =)

Test if the following (still) works:

It uses your phone's full-fledged Wifi AP to reverse-tether to another phone.
However it requires a somewhat complicated setup on your Symbian phone which I'm not sure it can handle.
Alternatively you need an extended wpa_supplicant binary to handle ad-hoc.
I'm not sure if any good ones exist, except for CM9. (Which might/will be incompatible with Stock ROM's)
You can use connectify for windows to create connection in the form of Access point
As far as I remember the Nokia N900 is the only one capable of that because it runs on Linux but no version of Symbian can do this because even custom Roms on there consists of basic file swapping and no real system access, and I did used to use Ad-Hoc enabler but that does just kill the Wifi connection now, and they removed that from the market now because they say they updating it hopefully for ICS.
Connectify has one drawback. You can't share 3g/4g connections on the PC, unless you have a premium version.
VirtualRouter doesn't work on my system for unknown reasons. It says service not started, even when it actually is.

[Q] Bluetooth tethering from an Android tablet to a non-Android phone

Hi all.
I have a 3G (HSDPA) mobile phone, not Android nor a smart phone, which has Bluetooth DUN profile: I can already tether my laptop to it via Bluetooth.
I'm planning to buy a WiFi only tablet running Android and would like to tether it to my mobile phone the same way as the laptop.
I've searched through the forums here at XDA with (apparent) no luck.
Is there any application/ROM for Android tablets that supports such a use?
I've tried a few Android phones (both stock and modded), but they don't seem to support Bluetooth tethering.
Is there any hint, reference, link or advice?
I am not scared to eventually do that in command line on the tablet, though.
Please don't suggest WiFi tethering (as the phone has no WiFi) or USB tethering as both the tablet and the phone just work as devices, not host.

Depends on the tablet you purchase. I have an Archos 101G9 Turbo tablet and an old Nokia E71 phone. I cannot tether the tablet to the phone through the bluetooth settings menu as it just does NOT show any profiles for the phone. I can however tether the tablet to my phone via command line commands. But this requires the tablet to be rooted in order to use such commands.

Well, rooting is almost mandatory to have any non-trivial feature on these devices.
I was just wondering whether my "special need" was somehow supported in some tablet with stock or aftermarket ROM.
I do understand that a fairly complete bluetooth stack should be already in place in Android.
What I need to understand is how far my feature is from a simple use.
Well I just happened to install BlueVPN from the market a day or two ago and it works like a charm. No need to open a terminal emulator and do what I've done before.
Using either way to connect to my phone still results in some native apps not recognizing the connection. The web browsers work (stock, opera mobile/mini, firefox, chrome). But native apps like the gmail app, speed test app, and probably a few others just won't recognize the data connection. I wonder if some other properties need to be set for them to recognize it.
Not a huge deal for me since the web browsers work.

These are great news for me.
While email and calendar can be accessed with the browser, SSH (ConnectBot) needs a connection. Could you please check whether this works?
I fear there's some firewalling or NAT in place, this is why it's not working... maybe.
I tried ConnectBot out for at least the telnet portion and that was able to connect but could not send anything from the onscreen keyboard. It just would not recognize anything I typed. I do not have anything to SSH into so could not test that connectivity out.
It connects at least from what I can see. But dislikes the touchscreen keyboard on my tablet apparently.

PC is running Windows 7 x64. Phone is an HTC HD2 running JellyBean AOSP from NAND. I know Wifi would be easiest, but this is a work PC and company policy is we are not allowed to run our own Wifi networks.
I managed to connect the HD2 to the PC via Bluetooth with a PAN network, it only worked when I turned on Internet Tethering on the phone. However, this makes the HD2 into the server and PC into the client so PC can use phone's internet connection. I need the reverse! I need HD2 to be the client, PC to be the server. I found a Bluetooth PAN client from the Play store, but it can't connect via PAN to the PC. I assume because the MS BT stack only has a PAN client and not server. Is there such a thing as a PAN server for PC? I've looked at Widcomm and Bluesoleil BT stacks, but neither specifically mentions having a PAN server.

2.just search for "reverse tethering galaxy y in google" and select first link from "galaxyyarchive,info" worked for me but dont know about other phones

So far there isn't any app that does a reverse tether through Bluetooth. Only Wi-Fi @ usb tether are currently possible.

Unfortunately, I couldn't get this to work. I tried using "Bluetooth PAN for Root Users" on the client phone and it wasn't able to see the Bluetooth connection on the phone which has a Bluetooth tethering checkbox. However, my PC with bluetooth dongle was able to make a PAN connection to that phone, so I guess it's something with the "Bluetooth PAN for Root Users" which isn't compatible.
There's a way to do that using USB Tunneling. An xda member has done this, and I'm using my PC's Internet connection on my HTC Desire with a USB cable. The download below will possibly work for any phone... I'm not taking any credits for this tool and app. This belongs to someone, and I downloaded it, but can't remember who made this. Anyone who knows, please correct me...

Does the android phone BT stack even support the PAN client role? I guess it may not be there. Could you clarify??
I don't know, I'm going to guess not.
I used to setup Windows on a Broadcom/Widcom bluetooth stack/driver to do this Bluetooth Reverse Tethering for Android - no rooting or apps required. Phone needs to support Bluetooth network access feature - no rooting or apps required as this is a standard/implemented protocol - Samsung S3, Sony Xperia V, Nexus 5, Nexus 4 support it, etc. To check, a phone that supports "bluetooth tethering" would likely support the "bluetooth internet access" (which is "bluetooth reverse tethering") feature. So, as an easy check - on your Android, go to Settings > More… > Tethering & portable hotspot - Now look for a “Bluetooth Tethering” item - if it is available, there’s a good chance that your device is compatible - but if you can’t find it, your device is likely NOT compatible.
As a roughly remember - the steps are like:
1. You need to enable the "Network Access Point" profile in the configuration and you'll get a new "network device"
2. Then in the control panel, go to the connection list, then ctrl-click the new bt-network-device and your LAN ethernet network device - right click and choose "bridge" to bridge it with your LAN.
3. Try pair android phone (which has the bluetooth "internet access" feature) with pc then if all is well, you'll see the bluetooth settings button for your computer - "If this inner settings page has the “Internet Access” item and checkbox shown".
If you tried on the Broadcom stack and still need help - I might try make a blog post with detailed screenshots someday if i can get some free time...
Okay, now I have a new PC running Windows 8.1 which has built-in Broadcom bluetooth, and a different phone, Motorola Droid Mini XT1030. I've installed the most recent WIDCOMM stack.
I'm able to connect a new Bluetooth PAN network device, but there is no "bridge" option. There are for other devices like the PC's built-in Wifi, but not for the bluetooth.
Am I missing something?
I've also tried using USB Reverse Tethering using an old phone as a bridge, but that doesn't work either.
