Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I was looking at the manual for HTC Hero for Sprint and they have ASR included in it. What it does is allow voice recognition for voice dialing. I was wondering if it's possible to implement this in a future ROM update?

Sprint's HTC Hero is running Android 1.6 (Donut) which has ASR. When 1.6 comes to the European Hero, I am sure it will be possible.

There's no good reason why voice dialling isn't already available on the Hero.
Voice dialling always was available on US T-Mobile G1s. As I understand it, it wasn't included in UK G1s because it had a hard time understanding the "English" english accents, but when I had my G1 (sourced in the US) the problem wasn't with my accent - it was that it was trying to "force" the number to be a US format phone number.

Dave

Destinator 6 for PocketPC and
Aren't version numbers only usefull if you PIRATE an application?
Also you can just email a dev for support for the wildfire...
Why is it, that almost EVERY topic I read, rather than people being constructive and offering users' their feedback - instead, I see people suggesting that a topic is focused on piracy??
You do realise there are websites like Google, don't you?
Look at the topic! How on earth can this be piracy?
The reason for a topic with accurate and relevant information such as versions:
e.g. v10.1 may support HTC Desire, and not the HTC Wildfire. v10.5 may support both, but without any compatible maps for Canada, Europe and Asia! This topic is aimed at MAPS and GPS software availability.
Some software will work on the WildFire, however will have maps more than 2+ years old!
It's such a pity there are people so 'close-minded' as you... willing to waste their time, submiting responses like that!
Alright kiddo, Here's an application for you CoPilot EU Version.
God knows what version it is, its the latest from the market.
Pretty uptodate for Belgium.
But personally I am still waiting for TomTom to come.
I have a feeling it will be here in a while.
Oh and map version, I have no clue it automatically downloads them from their server onto your SD card.
Sygic GPS works fine. Small installation file, but useful. Maps is small, but all just looks fine. But google map's coverage is larger than Sygic. Google map can find the location that sygic cant find. Just install both of them and u can go anywhere.
i have Copilot Live Pro 8.2.0.218 and navigon 2.6.1, good soft. i used cygic9, but didnt work on my wildfire and ndrive crash at beginning.
google map still the best, almost 99.99% coverage compare to all of the gps.
LOL :B
Thank you for your feedback!
From what I knew about Google Maps:
- it only works in the U.S.A.!
- it requires a data connection,
- the average device has a minimum of 8gb! Maps are less than 500mb, is it not faster and easier to have local maps, rather than require a data connection (especially if in an area of bad coverage),
- covers a minority of the worlds population.
- slow on updates and zoom, and incredibly slow street view (if available),
- and so on....
I may be wrong, but it doesn't offer many features outside of the USA/Canada...
http://www.google.com/mobile/navigation/
Scroll to bottom and select your country....
Google Maps works fine in the UK, but I find the robot voice difficult to hear over the thundering of my Ford diesel engine.
Sygic works well with 2.1 but not so well on 2.2, there are LOTS of crashes
I tried Copilot but did not like the interface, looks like it has been designed by ToysRUS or the Early Learning Centre
Navigation
CoPilot Live 8.2 Works absolutely fine for me, updates speed cameras and is quite a reasonable interface.
Navigon is ok but very quiet on stock roms although it is louder using the wildpuzzle
IGO8 is a bit difficult to install because you must change the screen resolution on wildfire. there is a small installation hack for this but screen is still not very good.
Google Maps is pretty good, but uses a lot of your data plan each time and would be prohibitively expensive outside uk.
Be aware, from my research it appears that copilot is the only one that is ok outside uk, others you have to change maps etc.
Hope this helps
Regards
Wow! Fantastic feedback people!
Thank you for spending the time helping others!
Updating topic with users feedback!
Thanks!
Papago X5
I'm using Papago X5 for Malaysian maps. I used to use Sygic but upon moving on to froyo, sygic kept crashing. Papago's maps seems to be more extensive than that of Sygics and is quite accurate. However, it does not have as many features as Sygic.

You say GPS quite accurate on Froyo. What is your Froyo custom rom do you use on Wildfire? I ask you cause in any custom rom that I use the GPS do not accurate on Google Map App.
Thank you and sorry for my English.
I use GPS a lot in my job and CoPilot 8 has yet to fail me on finding an obscure address in the middle of the dark swedish forests. A few speed limits and recent constructions are not up to date, but apart from that It's very nice.
Google Navigation doesn't work in Sweden, but using the modded version I've tried it out. It crashed a lot and didn't have speed camera info, but it had a somewhat nicer interface and the calculated travel times were more accurate. Searching for a destination is simpler too.
Have been using Sygic both on WM phone and now Android (2.1). Using with WM the program was very stable and good enough to navigate both for private and business purposes.
On Android the screen resolution is less good but acceptable......the big annoyance is that the program looses gps connection during a few seconds up to more than 15 minutes and than comes back......a restart does not help. Suppose people refer to this when they talk about crashing. I use Sygic mobile maps 10, version 8.14
TomTom did not have any crashes on WM so anxiously waiting till it comes available for Android. TomTom seems to be working on an Android version.
I use Sygic mobile maps 10 on Cyanogenmod Stable and works fine.
Sorry for the bump.
But I just contacted Sygic support asking for Wildfire compatibility and they informed me that it is NOT compatible.
How come you guys are stating that it works?
Thanks
I'm evaluating whether I'd go for the Wildfire or the € 200 more expensive Desire. I bought the HTC Touch Cruise 3 years ago for € 540 and was utterly disappointed that I got little value for my money. That's why I need to know whether Sygic runs decently on Wildfire or not... If you could post youtube video, that would be great

I have used both Touch Cruise 1 and 2 with Sygic and got good performance (stability and navigation function) although I liked TomTom better, but that can be ofcourse a matter of personal preference.
On Wildfire I tried Sygic 8.14, 8.16 and 8.06 and all of them had their problems.........ranging from crashing, not able to get GPS started and in case of 8.16 I could not even activate maps.......I am a bit dissapointed in Sygic since on their site there is no reference as to not working with Wildfire. Note I am using stock Froyo Rom.
Searching now for alternative......
Copilot live 8
Yesterday installed Copilot Live 8. Was an easy process. Maps can be downloaded via WiFi.
Due to some reason I could not download the complete Europe map but only do this in pieces. Navigation across boarders therefor not possible.....you even have to close the programm to switch maps.
Apart from that it has not crashed, although I made only 2 rides up till now.
Screen resolution is much better than Sygic. And the buttons are bigger which makes it easier to navigate menu's compared to sygic. Just like TomTom (and Sygic) a lot of settings possible. Even on-line updates possible.
Will report back when I gathered more experience.
navdroyd works fine for me ,
has support for maps all over the world
its a offline gps software ,
has voice guidance

[Q] Custom Android GUI with simple text menus and voice output

Hi guys,
we will have to buy a new phone for my visually impaired sister during next year (or maybe much earlier), because she is currently unable to use her simple Nokia (unable to read SMS messages on display etc.).
I tried to find any simple phone with voice output for her, but the only one possible candidate was Samsung Haven, which was only available for U.S. mobile networks and not for european GSM (and did not have Czech language support, but this was minor in this case).
She needs only a simple phone to perform standard voice calls and SMS messages. Current approach here is to use some smartphone – symbian with Mobilespeak or Android with Code Factory or some other a11y suite. OK, why not, but this aims to make a accessible smartphone, while many people need only accessible phone (which is not available).
So this také me to following idea:
if Android uses a modified linux kernel and GUI via Java virtual machine Dalvik, then it should be possible to use alternative simple menu with something like linux console voice output instead of the standard GUI and so make it much quicker.
This menu could be very easy – only to provide functions similar to „normal“ cellphones like the old good Nokia 3310 only with voice output. I know that it sounds very stupid to degrade a smartphone to a simple cellphone, but I do not know other way.
I think, that such trimmed off custom ROM with this sort of text menu and only basic functions (calls, SMS, phone book, calendar and clock with alarm) combined with a voice output could be able to run on cheap and relatively weak devices like Huawei Boulder for example so final solution could be comparable with normal cellphones. We need something with physical keyboard, so we could use HTC Cha Cha or if possible, the much cheaper Huawei which are both available from official distribution.
Are there any initiatives or attempts to create something similar?
Thanks much
PS: we are ready to sacrifice wireless internet and lack of Google services for better performance.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

Looking for this, now that this is available in 4.1. Tried this in nexus s, not only is this offline - it's way more accurate also! Offline accuracy is absolute credo compared to this.
I really hope this can be ported to galaxy s2.

Hi
I want to know about how to start offline voice recognition system in android 5.1 system update it was working in my old android kikat 4.4.4 and even I can also call by just saying call and the person name but now none is working. Do you have any idea how to use offline speech recognition system. I have already download the English UK offline pack and also tts pack for it and also tell me how to use hands free in it

Voice search issues

Used the same google email addr I had in my old evo 4g. The issue is that the voice translation doesn't seem to be understanding most words I say. Had no such issues with the old evo, in fact, close to 90%+ accuracy. Cleared the voice history from my google profile (link from the google dashboard), but the issue continues.
I don't use speech-text often, but it would be nice if it worked. Everything else works on the phone, so its likely some software issue.
Thoughts?

this.
now google-ri has to relearn your speaking. give it a couple weeks and it should get better again.
I assumed that was the right thing to do, given that this is a new piece of hardware, probably 'hears' me differently than the old one.
How does the google voice program learn from it's mistakes. It's not as though it lets you correct the incorrectly identified words.
its hidden in the "privacy policy" (yea i know, i'm weird for reading all that stuff)
What is the benefit of personalized speech recognition?
Speech recognition is based on statistical modeling. To recognize spoken words, we compare the input speech to a statistical model of the language and try to find the closest match - the system's best guess at what the user said. The statistical model is huge - it must cover all of the fundamental sounds of the language (phonemes), all of the words, and all of the different ways that the words can be strung together in the spoken language. Furthermore, it must capture all of the variations among users that happen when a language is spoken, for example all of the different dialects and accents and individual differences in the sound of the voice (e.g., male vs. female, young vs. old).
Knowing what you said in the past allows us to build specialized models that are designed to match your voice and your words. Over time, this allows us to improve the speech recognition accuracy for you. But to do that, we must keep track of what you said in the past.

A note about corrections
When you speak, we present to you what it is that our algorithm thought you said. When you make a correction we capture that correction. However, we do it only for words - no numbers or words with special characters. Furthermore, we limit the correction only to cases where you substitute one word with one or two other words. If you simply add text we do not capture it.

[Q] Google Now: make calls based on relationships(eg. call dad). Not available?

This feature was introduced back in February and at the time a many news outlets reported on it, for example:
http://www.androidcentral.com/how-assign-contacts-relationship-voice-actions-google-now
I did not have this functionality at the time but I was hoping it's just a matter of short time to roll it out.
I'm on an HTC One M7 (4.4.3 Sense 6) using the Google Now launcher version 1.1.0.1167994.
I am based in Europe so I think this might be just another US exclusive functionality.
Is calling based on relationships from Google Now available to anyone outside of the US?
Are there any hacks to make this available?
I have found a workaround myself and it's easier than I thougth: simply add 'dad', 'mom' etc. to the nickname field in Google contacts. That's all.
