Help required here - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi
i have a htc hero with official latest rom, which custom rom is the best to update to
also what is main diffierence between custom rom and official rom
and please do reply
thanks

Read the threads in this forum, they've listed pros/cons and instructions on how to install as well as what's included in each.
The choices you have are:
- MoDaCo 2.6 (from a happy tradition of about 15 releases since about the start of September)
- Drizzy's Hero ROM (One version released, now unmaintained)
- Drizzy's Hero Blur Port (0.6-r2, maintained by other users on this forum and Drizzy himself now I think, it's a port of the Motorola Blur UI on to the Hero platform)
- Donut ION Port (Plain jain Android Donut build on the Hero)
If you want a good user experience that's an improvement of the HTC Hero builds, definitely without doubt get Modaco 2.6, but if youre into bug tracking, fixing, hacking and development give one of the others a go and help the community I guess.

ok thank you is it really worth going to modaco from offical rom? also will it still be same android os?
thanks

Well, you have to make up your mind yourself, but I'd say absolutely without a doubt.
I'm not sure what HTC Rom you have at the moment, but the original ROM was terrible, just attrocious, and Modaco's ROM (1.5 at the time, I think), was a god send. And its just been getting better even since.

Put Amons Hero recovery image v1.2.3 on, get it to partition your SD card correctly ready for Apps2sd, then get Pauls MCR 2.6 rom on your phone, you wont regret it

Fuze ROM vs Touch Pro ROM?

Hi,
I just bought an ATT Fuze and want to "clean it up" by installing a clean ROM on it.
I've done a lot of search here but there is SO MUCH information that in the end i'm still not clear about what's the latest and what's outdated.
So i'm asking a couple of questions. Answers or redirections will be much appreciated.
- If I want to install a custom ROM, should I pick a Fuze ROM or a Touch Pro ROM? (I am not using the phone in the US so I don't need to stick to ATT ROMs). Is one ROM better than the other by nature?
- Is there a "ROM-Status Wiki" or somewhere where one can go and check what are the latest FUZE/TPro ROMs available and what are the features in them? Or is going through all the threads the only way? What if I get a ROM and its not the latest? because there are so many threads out there.
thanks
The Wiki has all the info you are looking for:

Im assuming that you are referring to Official (non cooked Roms)
The latest English Touch Pro Rom is 5.05 which can be found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=478657
The Touch Pro Rom is better because it has better GPS signal and no ATT crap and likely to run faster.
You can also get the latest Radio Rom which is 1.12.25.19
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=487994
The only you need to do is get the cab that convert the ATT Fuze hardware keyboard when running Touch Pro Rom which can be found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=474192
Before you do all this you need to Run HardSPL on the Fuze which can be found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=410150
This is a latest ATT Fuze 5.08 "Test Rom" so you dont need to install the keyboard fix cab
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=487994
Here is some latest official Touch Pro ROM Asian Versions
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=494603
Anyway read through and make an informed decision for yourself. Everything else I did not list are cooked ROMs which I personally not a big fan of. I like the official ROMS and make the customizations myself.
Thank you both of you. Between your two replies, you've answered exactly what I was asking for.
Much appreciated. Thanks again!
Rom Location?
I bought my FUZE in the US. But I am using it in Asia.
If I slash it with an English Asian TPro Rom, what difference does it make VS a non Asian ROM?
nothing really same old stuff. you just have to set your regions and time dislay and calendar display format. and of course change the keyboard layout to accomodate TP ROm on Fuze. You better off using the Asian Rom if you are using in Asia cause the Radio Rom should work better.
once again, thank you.
Thanks to your answers, I am getting more familiar with Raphael and the ROMs and trying out stuff.
I also like to install Stock (shipped) ROMs and then make my own customizations. So I have flashed the WWE Asia rom and its working very well.
But now I want to install the new Rhodium TF3D 2. It is recommended for OS builds 21000 or higher. However the latest shipped ROMs are less than 21000.
So now my question is, how can I upgrade my OS build to 21000 without installing a cooked ROM? I know the answer is probably "no you can't" so my real question is, "being a person who likes to stay as close to a Stock Rom without going into cooked roms, what the best bet to achieve this?"
Thanks again in advance.
dont know of a solution
read this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=498424&highlight=2100
I'll give it a try. thanks!
How do i check the rom build, is the same as the rom version?? sorry fo the noob question
Settings -> System -> About
Should read something similar to this:
CE OS 5.2.21051 (Build 21051.1.6.4)
WinMO 6.1 = 5.2
ROM/SYS = 21051
AKU - 1.6.4
You can obtain additional info from Device Information as well.
HTH,
Closing thread guys..
Information on this is already available.
Peace,
Joshua

What 2.1 to choose

I have read alot of the topics almost all the last 2 months. I have thought about flashing my htc hero but I don't know which roms are the most functional with the less bugs.
I read that some roms have problem with camera where it gets green, then some cannot connect to wifi others can and same with 3G and H. Then apps2SD (what is this btw. is it so the phone can see the SD card?) and other issues have been said. Then theres the battery problem which I read, on my normally use it lasts for between 2-4 days depending on the heavy use of the phone.
Its very confusin to me with all these option and allot of custom roms from different leaks or phones and different people making them. I hope some one can clear me up a little as I know little in this area and I have tested none custom rom yet, I still run the 1.5 stock rom.
I guess if I want to flash the rom I need to follow the guide at
"#Complete Newbie Guide to Install a Custom Rom & Newbie FaQ#"
(cannot post links yet as my post count is low which is fair =) )
thank you in advance
APPS2SD lets you install apps to your SD-Card (if it's been partitioned properly), and is there because of the very limited amount of memory available on the phone for installing apps.
This link will give you a list of the ROMs available for the Hero
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=GSM Hero ROMs
-Look for a recent ROM: these usually have the most features/fixes
-Check out the known issues/bugs: If you can live with those issues until/if they're fixed, then flash that ROM.
-Look at screenshots (if the way it looks matters to you)
-Root your phone: (remember which is at your own risk, you could possibly brick your phone)
-Flash the ROM you chose, unless the issues worry you so much in which case wait for the official release in June.
Everyone has their own preference as to which ROM they choose to flash to their phone. If you like the way a certain ROM looks then flash that one. It's all about trying out different ROMs.
Regards
I have tested most of the roms in this forum and i would say like this.
All roms has its + and - but ...
If you like rosie (stock HTC) Villain 5.4 or SlideVillain 1.01 is the best, BeHero is also pretty god
If you like non rosie i would go for ahero 0.8 VanillaEclair 1.3 is god roms
Hope that helps
fwiw im currently using sushi rom and its pretty fast and efficient. once i get JIT working ill be quite the happy camper.
edit: although in retrospect its based off of fresh 2.0d so i guess its not a 2.1 rom :-/
Thread moved to QnA, not dev related.
I have followed the debate and read some of the many threads on the sub setion. But as I see it there are still issue and FC's with all roms even the ones using the official Taiwan build.
Is there any rom of now that is free of any issue so no FC and everything works?
If none 2.1 is available without any issue's, are there any earlier builds which are fully stable with everything working, faster and stable than the stock rom? Most important is that downloaded apps from market works, facebook sync, calender, camera, peoples, sms, album+rotation etc. Any of the official 2.1 out which have everything function?
Thanks

What are my options ?

Hello all!
I'm new to this and I have a few questions.
I have been reading around a little bit but it doesn't help much when you have so many codenames like Eclair, donut, vanilla and now CyanogenMod-5 that I got interested.
I have a HTC Hero, I would wait for HTC update to have Android 2.1 but the update got delayed to June. I don't want to wait 2 months for it and that's how I decided to try flashing it.
1) What are my ROM options to flash it? Is it all of them compatible or just a few ? Like, only Hero-compatible ROMs or ROMs compatible to devices that support Android ?
2) Basically I want Android 2.1 (Eclair, right?) but don't want to lose the HTC UI. Is that possible ? (the look, the widgets, etc..)
3) On the other hand, not only I don't want to lose HTC's UI as I'd like more of it. HTC Desire for example has more and new widgets that Hero doesn't have. Is there a community ROM that contains those ? Do I need a special ROM for that ?
4) Does all the ROMs contains the latest dev kernel versions ? the latest android dev version that is.
5) Does it have an auto update to update the ROM ?
6) What's the difference between Vanilla and Donut ? I see many talking about Vanilla, but shoulnd't I want the Donut instead ? ( sounded funny, I know )
Thank you in advance !
Looking forward to socialize in this forum.

1. Only HTC Hero rom's should be flashed (if you're not on Sprint Hero then you're GSM so look for GSM rom's = most) - the wiki has a page dedicated to which rom's are available.
2. HTC theme is called rosie, so look for a rosie enabled rom
3. Some extra widgets come with them - check with each release (you can find them all in the development section)
4. No, most are based upon leaked kernals which have been hacked together to work, they work well enough but as soon as the official 2.1 kernal is available for the hero it will be added in to the rom's
5. Some have OTA updates (e.g. VillainROM)
6. Vanilla just means without the HTC Sense UI (Rosie) so you don't want a vanilla rom. Donut is v1.5 (or maybe 1.6?) of android i believe.
And welcome to the community
Check out my guides for all your needs XD

Thank you! that helped tons!
One more question, mine is not Sprint Hero, just Hero
So it's certain that this is a GSM device ?
How can I tell if it's GSM or CDMA ?
gsm means u can use any sim card
cdma means u cant
Awesome. So mine must be GSM.
Now, what is Radio ROM ?
What is Radio ? Do I have to flash that as well ?
EDIT: I think I get it. It can improve the signal, yes ?
But is it safe to flash this? what are my restrictions?
Looks much more dangerous than flashing a custom ROM
Ok, much more complicated than I thought!
I need to downgrade my kernel first,
didn't find any up to date tutorials on that
only then I need to root and finally flash it
I installed this " ROM Manager " where you have some easy options:
Install ROM from SD card, Download Rom, Check for ROM Updates
just with a click (tap)
That one is easier, but does it work ? How come noone mentions this ROM Manager ?
That are many ROMs to choose..
I take it VillainROM 5.4 is the most popular/older ?
As long as it has Android 2.1 plus the latest Sense UI (not vanilla) then the number of options get trimmed a bit (or so I hope)

Its not too difficult, follow BTDAG's guide in my signature, its bang on. Install custom recovery, flash ROM.
No you do not need to downgrade your kernal. When you flash the ROM it will sort that out for you.
As for using 2.1 ROMs, I haven't taken the plunge yet, I'm using MCR3.2 which is a tweaked fast and stable 1.5 ROM.
You're right, btdag's guide did it for me. Very very useful.
Since I didn't have to worry about kernel, it wasn't thaaat hard.
I already installed VillainRom 5.4 and it's great !
Thanks for answering my questions !

Which

Hi
Since moving to N1 my Hero was redundant but then it went to repair and got a brand new Hero. So What is the best ROM to use now? Where did feeyo go
Can someone recommend a stable sense rom please
Thanks
Feeyo got banned for not following the GPL agreement (and making dupe accounts repeatedly), he now resides on his own website where I believe he has now released his source code as per the agreement. Google it.
Best rom is still to try them all. The best supported sense rom is probably VillainROM 12 (not including Cronos stuff which I don't follow currently as its not on XDA). But you have to try Froyo IMHO! Many releases out there, just give them a go.
Try froyo, as it has stable and usable jit
care to link to the rom please
There are many froyo rom's check the dev section, Froyd Villain, elelinux, Fusion ROM, Cronos Froyo, etc etc...
my hero is on 1.5, what's the quickest way to root?

http://www.villainrom.co.uk/vBwiki/index.php?title=Installing_Custom_ROMs is probably the easiest method tbh.
On Hero 1.5, I got the universal root and it rooted but when i open the terminal app the keyboard dont show, i tried holding menu aswell. I tried other terminal apps but no luck
Try elinux 1.9~~ Froyo rom
I take it CM 6 is the best right now?
the latest mcr went ugly on me - could hear voice on phone calls, slow
If you want to use HTC Sense install Android 2.1 (2.2 is still in beta) try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=702398 I'm using it and it's pretty fast and looks great. But if you want to use stable Android 2.2 without Sense try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=767886

[Q] Gingerbread

Hi All,
I'm new to modding my phone and recently flashed it with Cyanogenmod Froyo 2.2.
I want to flash it with Gingerbread but have seen that there are memory leak problems with Cyanogens.. In fact today they ave decided to pull support for the device.
What are my options for getting Gingerbread onto my Hero GSM??
I have seen Elelinux's mod highly spoke of, but it is based on Cyanogen mod (i think). Does it too have the same memory leaks??
Thanks in advance!
Cyanmod have Officially Ceased supporting the HTC HERO as they don't have a DEV supporting the Developement for the HERO
THE LAST Cyanmod for HERO is I Guess version 7.02 and thats it
Elelinux's Gingerbread is Based on the CM7 but He does his own tweaks as well you can always check the thread for what problems people are reporting for the ROM
There is another GIngerbread ROM by 'Cronos' which you could try, but you will have to google for it as I don't think I might get away with posting links here
google for 'cronos project'
I have used elelinux's Roms a lot so like his work but is personal choice and thats what XDA offers it members 'CHOICE'
Don't make assumptions about ROMS .
Try them yourself and stick to the one you like the best
in his latest version (2.0), elelinux included a special patch that has to be flashed separately after flashing the ROM, and on my Hero it reduced the amount of black screens and invisible menus by a great deal. They still show up every now and then, but only when doing memory-intensive stuff. Go check out the thread
Haven't tried Cronos yet, but they also get some good credit I believe.
