Hi I have just upgraded to windows7 ultimate and just wanted to know does adb for android still work does anyone have a setup guide for me?. I hear problems with w7 is it true? Any help would be very gratfull thanks in advance.

you need to use drivers for vista (x86/x64) on win 7 to recognice your device , the rest of setup is the same for every windows ..
1. Download SDk
2. Unpack it to a folder you choose for example C:/Program Files/SDK/
3. Add "PATH" to system variables - right click "My computer" > properties > advanced system settings> at the bottom "Enviroment Variables" > and at System variables scroll down to "PATH" and edit. at the and of the line add the path to your SDK/tools.
in my example: c:/program files/SDK/tools/
This is it.
If it doesn't recognize the hero, you might have to install the adb drivers manually. That happened with me on Win 7 x64. I just went to the device manager and manually installed the driver. After that all was working.

I have seen on the thread, "post your X10 screen" or something like that. And I have seen some that have a different WiFi icon, battery in right corner. How do I change that? Is it custom ROMs or what?

EDIT: Im not getting a notification of Android ADB when i plug in my USB. I have tried to download USBdeview and see if there is HTC Android, but there is not.
I have a Xperia X10i phone and the only thing that is listed is "Sony Ericsson sa0101 ADB Interface Driver" and "Sony Eri Memory Stick USB Device".
When I uninstall ADB Interface driver nothing happens. Just freeze for a couple of seconds but thats it.
Whats wrong?
Can someone help me?

Setting up the Android SDK
Download the file from above
Unzip to your desktop
Take the "android-sdk-windows" folder and move it to the root of your hard drive (C:\)
Right click on My Computer and click properties
Select the Advanced Tab or Advanced System Setting (Vista/Windows 7)
Select Environment Variables...
Press New
For Variable Name type: adb
For Variable Value type: C:\android-sdk-windows\tools
Now,
1. Run SDK Manager.exe located in the android-sdk-windows folder
2. If it gives you an error go to settings and click on "Force http//....."
3. Select all options and let it download and install
If you cant get the setup to work, Download the USB-DRIVERS folder - HERE (Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7)

Preparing your phone for ADB
Go to Settings on your phone
Select Applications
Select Development
Make sure 'USB Debugging' is checked

Installing Drivers
Plug in your phone through USB and DO NOT MOUNT IT!!!!!
Your computer should see a new device and try to install Android 1.0 driver (If it doesnt, scroll down to the "Im not getting a notification of Android ADB when i plug in my USB" section)
Let it load
Once it cant find them select "Install drivers from my pc"
The drivers you need are in the Android SDK 1.5r2 folder (C:\android-sdk-windows\usb_driver)
Depending on your OS pick x86 or amd64
You ADB Android Device should now be installed! Good Job
For Android SDK 1.5r7+
1. Run SDK Manager.exe
2. If it gives you an error go to settings and click on "Force http//....."
3. Select all options and let it download and install

Check if your phone is detected by ADB
Open up Command Prompt (Go to run, type in cmd, press enter)
Type in

adb devices === You should see your device listed
adb shell === you should see # in the next line
Now you are all set to run adb commands
Note: for a list of commands type in 'adb' in cmd

It would be an idea to read the three tutorials yes and the packs are there for you to use when you've learned how to edit apks. If the adb driver is already installed I'm not sure why you're removing it, you need it to use adb.

There's no "real" driver...
Just connect your Viewpad 7 to your PC.
A window pops up where you can select "setup.exe" - select it.
Then a few drivers get installed (perhaps a restart is necessary)
Seems like the Viewpad 7 has a virtual drive which gets mounted when connecting it to a PC - it's shown up as virtual CD-drive for me under Windows XP and Windows 7.
PS: The drivers are also located on the virtual CD-drive in a directory.
Make sure you run the file from the virtual optical drive if you have autorun disabled.

How to remove the virtual drive
I have already installed the drivers from this drive, but whenever I connect the device, the virtual CD-ROM drive still appears. Anyone know how to get rid of it?

I always open the Sync tool then (do nothing, no sync or so).
That's the only way my Windows 7 PC recognizes the tablet via ADB.
I have been doing that as well, but it's just annoying to have this extra drive that is of no use and just sits there taking up a drive letter.
Stupid question, ive never used adb, but does this mean i dont have to download it because already cames on that virtual drive, and so i only need to install it ?
Now i manage to install the drivers.
I go to the command line in windows and write :
adb usb
adb devices, and get this:
List of devices attached
FM6120420141
Then i do,
adb shell, and nothing happens.
Ive tried several commands and nothing works, what m i doing wrong here ?

Solved driver issue on windows7
Hi,
I was facing issue in connecting viewpad7 to windows7 machine. Even synchronization steps were failing. Manuall attempt to run "adb.exe devices" were unable to detect the device. Here is my steps that I did for rooting the device with SuperOnceClick(SOC)1.7-
1. Initially driver were not detected/installed on windows7. Only CDROM displaying setup was displayed and clicking "Setup.exe" is not installing drivers. Copy the All files on computer and say folder name is "v7Setup".
2. To Install drivers, Connect Tablet/Phone to windows7, select "USB Tethering in tablet" (This is needed to detect devices by Windows7), in windows7:check the "Device Manager", it can show "Others" two devices: HSUSB & RNDIS. Update the driver for both devices from "v7setup/RUT/*" folders.
3. Now start SOC1.7 and select "rageagainstthecage" and click root. It may wait at "Running rageagainstthecage..." message in SOC log window. Then disconnect the Tablet after waiting for 1-2 minute and connect again after beep sound from windows7. Here, again I needed to install the drivers as mentioned in step2. SOC1.7 will proceed and finally in poup message, it will ask to "push su" files. And Done.

You must run SDK Manager in adminstrator mode. Right click on SDK Manager & select" run as administrator".

I tried right clicking on the SDK manager button, but only got the following choices:
Lock the Toolbars
Customize Perspective
Hide Toolbar
I'm running Eclipse Helios, ADT 16.x, on a Windows 7 64bit machine.
Oops, instead of the button in the Eclipse interface, I then went to the sdk manager in the file system and right clicked on that, and it gave me the "run as administrator" choice. Thanks for the info.

but to check if adb is installed correctly. i use cmd and enter adb devices

As with any executable in windows, if you are in a different directory than the executable, you either have to provide the full path when executing it, or add the path of the executable to your windows path. This is not something specific to ADB, it is common for any executable in windows.

I can't get Android SDK manager to run on Windows 8 x64. Every time I run the executable a command prompt window flashes briefly and then nothing happens. I have tried installing both 32 and 64 bit version of JDK 1.6 and running SDK manager with admin permissions and in compatibility mode.
Any help would be appreciated

It runs fine for me on Windows 8 Pro x64. The command propt window does flash, but the manager comes up soon after. I have JDK 1.7 though.

The same was in Windows7 64-bit for some SDK version (dont remember version number).
It was solved by switching off some windows security checking. May be this is not best solution, but works.
Got a fix
I was having this problem too. It's caused by the PATH variables to java.exe being set incorrectly. You can modify the environment to have java_exe pointing to wherever it is C:\Windows\System32\java.exe for me or modify android.bat in tools to change set java_exe= call lib\find_java.bat if not defined java_exe goto :EOF
to this: set java_exe="D:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_07\bin\java.exe" where the path is the path to your java exe
you can then run android.bat and it works. The reason (re)installing java works is because it adds the path variables for you. They must have gotten changed/moved when I upgraded to windows 8
I'm having the same issue. Installed JDK 1.7 but still the same issue.
I have a fresh Install of W8 and am just now trying to install JDK and SDK.

I am having the identical problem. I try to launch SDK Manager and get a quick cmd flash and then nothing. I am on Win8 Pro with jdk 1.7.0_21.
I added c:\Windows\System32\java.exe to the path (correct on my system) but no obvious change in result. Then edited set java_exe in android.bat to "C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_21\bin\java.exe" and ran the batch file, and still I just get a quick flash of the command window. My java sdk was just installed today prior to setting up the ADT Bundle for Windows. Eclipse loads with ADT, but the SDK Manager is still a no go. Thanks in advance for any ideas.
Solved my Windows 8 problem

I have been having similar problems with Android SDK manager not starting in Windows 8. Tried altering Java paths and messing with Android.bat etc. etc. but am now convinced the problem is with the UAC of Windows 8. Why?
1) Originally installed Eclipse in a sub dir of Program Files and found that I could not edit any sub dir there (like Android.bat) because of User Access Controls (UAC)... got me thinking...
2) So re-installed Eclipse in a sub dir under my user, and bingo... SDK manager works fine now.
It is possible to disable all UAC in Win 8 Pro using secpol.msc, but I don't have Pro version and it's not in bog standard version... However, you can still edit the registry to give all apps admin privileges but seems a bit drastic to have to do this...

Yeah I've reinstalled everything as described here, and I am still unable to get it to launch. Just getting the brief flash of a CMD prompt.
Finally solved it!
I had the exact same problem. I have gone crazy trying to fix this for past 1 day. Finally solved it using this guide: http://www.dominantwire.com/2015/03/android-sdk-not-opening.html.
Had to do some tweaks in the android.bat file and re-specify the environment variable paths. The solution is pretty universal. Should work for you guys as well.
