just do i use my recovery image to install a theme? like rename theme to update.zip, power on holding home and end, click update.zip....
so im pretty sure about that but...
my rom/radio will still be there untouched right?
like this will only replace the image files or w/e is needed to make a theme?
thanks a bunch!
edit*
unlocked hero, modac. 2.9, not the permanent recovery image!
There are 2 ways to flash an image. When you go into recovery and choose "Flash update image" you will probably have 2 options.
1. Apply sdcard: update.zip
2. Apply sdcard: choose zip
Method 1. Move zip file unchanged to SD card and choose 2nd option then browse for the correct zip file.
Method 2. rename image file to update.zip , upload to your SD card and choose option 1
It doesn't affect your rom/radio etc.
Always best to do a nandriod backup before installing a theme, so that if you decide you don't like it or it doesn't run smoothly you can then do a nandriod restore which will put everything back to the way it was before you installed the theme.
thank you very much!

i beg to differ. the rom is affected, as parts of the rom are exchanged with the parts modified to create the theme.
basically the images that are used to create the gui are altered and then repacked. if you extract a theme update file you will find several apk's of system apps inside, extract these and you will eventually find the images.
usually to create a theme the original app from the rom is used and only the images are altered, not the application code, so it won't make any difference for the functionality, but it leads to themes being tied to one version of a rom, and working only with that rom version.
thanks, yea i wasnt sure if i clicked update.zip, if it would erase the whole rom, and only put the alteered stuff on... leaving me without a functional rom
ahah but now i get that it only erases the parts being added!
thanks

and your a genious.. lol it looks like someone who knows what there doing put together an apk with all the images, so all i gotta do is edit the colours.. then update it like the person who updated that theme did! thank youu

Hi all,
I know how to change the wallpaper on the lockscreen but I was wondering if it's possible to remove the grey band displaying the operator and the time. It really doesn't match my wallpaper I've searched for this but I can't find any solution.
Drizzys rom has the type of lockscreen you are after. Drop him a PM and see if he can help.
It would be great if Drizzy could provide the way that the lockscreen can be customized so we can all know, instead of PMing each other.
Thanks ritdaw. I'll give it a look.
ill second that, this would be really really interesting!!

You need to get one a ressource apk from your phone (/system/app/htc-ressources.apk or something like that), extract it (renaming it to .zip will do magic ), mod the ressource you need to, zip it and upload it back to your phone after renaming it to .apk .
Of course, you need to be root, and you must do a backup (nandroid is perfect for that) since it can make your current system unbootable
Thanks Dream team. I'll give it a try. Bit busy right now, so it'll be a few days. Have you done this yourself?
Cheers.

So, right off the bat, I would like you all to know that I'm extremely new to Android and the entire rooting/flashing/etc. practice. Coming from jailbreaking iPhones since the 3G, this is an entirely new concept to me.
The question I have is with regards to AOSP contacts in the Tesla Coil ROM (1.2). I have the ROM flashed and working properly, and I have the AOSP contacts .zip that kejar31 posted on his Twitter, but I'm not sure how to install this. Do I just click the .apk? I'm timid about doing anything without being sure for fear of effing something up
Thanks in advance!
Find the SLWM and you can install it from your desktop.

Thanks for your help, I definitely hadn't seen anything about the SWM. One question about this method: the .apk file is located in the System-->Apps folder of the unzipped folder; there is also a META-INF file located in the unzipped folder; does this matter? I mean, this isn't a run-of-the-mill .apk, it's the contacts application for a ROM.
Oh, then my guess is its a flashable zip, just put the whole zip on the SDcard reboot to recovery select flash zip from sdcard and flash, and as always backup before you do this.

Ok, yeah...this sounds right to me. I'd read about flashing apps, but wasn't sure how that was done. Sorry for being a noob I'll learn quickly.
The stock battery icon on Galaxy wifi 5.0 is not very inspiring and it doesn't tell you the battery level. It is quite easy to replace them on other phones with Clockwork Recovery. You just need to go to UOT kitchen http://uot.dakra.lt/kitchen/ , pick the icons you like and it will give you a flashable zip file.
Without Clockwork Recovery on Galaxy wifi, it can still be done but with a bit more manual operations.
Prerequisites:
1. A rooted device.
2. Clockworkmod Recovery (optional).
Step 1:
Use Titanium backup (pro version needed) to free up some spaces in /system directory (There are 0 byte free in stock rom). You can delete some unused system apps or convert some of them to user app. For example converting Flash player and google map to user app free up enough space for me.
Step 2:
Backup the following apk files from your stock rom. You can do that by using some file manager like File Expert. These files will be needed by UOT kitchen
/system/app/SystemUI.apk
/system/framework/framework-res.apk
/system/framework/twframework-res.apk
Step 3:
Go to UOT kitchen http://uot.dakra.lt/kitchen/ and cook your custom UI. Make sure you read their how-to here first http://uot.dakra.lt/how_to/
Step 4a: (follow this if you have Clockworkmod Recovery)
Copy the zip produced by UOT kitchen to your internal SD card. Reboot to CWM Recovery and flash the zip file using the option "Install zip from sd card". Then reboot and you are done.
Step 4b: (follow this if you don't have Clockworkmod Recovery)
Extract the 3 modified apk files from the zip package produced by UOT kitchen and put them into a convenient location on your sdcard, say /sdcard/
Step 5:
The system directory is by default read only. You need to remount it as r/w. I do that through adb shell
Code:
su
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk0p13 /system
Step 6:
Copy your new apk files into /system directory
Code:
cp /sdcard/SystemUI.apk /system/app/
cp /sdcard/framework-res.apk /system/framework/
cp /sdcard/twframework-res.apk /system/framework/
Step 7:
Restart your device. The /system directory should remounted as read only and the new UI will take effect.
Disclaimer:
Certainly there are risked involved and I did corrupted my rom on several occasions when trying this out. So make sure you have a functional ROM around before you give this a try.
thanks for the tips.
hey I wanna ask you about is it can fully modification from http://uot.dakra.lt/kitchen/
I mean don't just modify battery icon but every option that site provide.
thanks in advance.

I have only experimented with icons so far. Other mod may be possible because UOT kitchen does support gingerbread. Since this device is new, we need some brave soul to try that out

Yes, you will need the pro version. If you have the pro version, long press an app will give you the option to do the conversion.
Well, while deleting apps with TI, I decided to get rid of "phone", figuring I didn't need it, but it turns out Google voice needs it! Trying to "restore", but just hangs forever. If someone could give me the "com.sec.android.app.dialertab.apk" located in /system/app/ I would really appreciate it!
EDIT; I just reinstalled voice from market, seemed to fix it, I wouldn't advise removing phone from the apps though!
can you make the display of battery accurate to 1%?thank you!
First make it accurate to 5%, then work on 1%
I think the accuracy of the battery level is deeper down in the system, may be in the kernel?
If you try different types of battery widget on Galaxy Player, they all have very bad accuracy.
I want to edit the framework-res.apk manually, instead of using the kitchen. Do the files need to be deoxed? Would flashing a framework-res compiled with apk manager brick the device?
nice guide!
I've used UOT Kitchen to get ICS transitions, change icons, battery, fonts, and customize the status bar and they all work on my galaxy player 4.0 US.

There is still an odex file in the system directory. I suppose it is not deoxed but UOT kitchen doesn't seem to bother with that file. I guess it is because these apk files don't contain any executable code.

Two things, if you please:
When you say "corrupted my rom", you can't boot your device but you can still go to dl mode, correct?
"functional ROM" is the fw/md5 file we usually flash via odin/heimdall?
I'd like to try this out (& then some...) but, in the absence of a custom recovery, I don't wanna have to go through the lengths of "resurrecting" my sgp. TIA!

In my case, it couldn't boot beyond the samsung start up screen, but I can still boot into download mode. Since we are only modifying a file within the file system, it is very unlikely that it will destroy the download mode.
If you can get to download mode, you can flash one of the firmwares you found in this forum using odin. You need to be sure you have the correct firmware for your device though, because there are so many variant of Galaxy Player. What is the version of your device?
nvm that (i was thinking on the same lines too though) but thanks anyway! appreciate it.
thanks to your guide, was able to change my fonts and added that flying in pop up animation as well. for these two, however, i don't think we need the kitchen though and for that matter, we don't need to modify systemui & twframework.
for fonts (you could use font changer apps, but i hate doing so for such things), take any you fancy from anywhere here in xda (WARNING: only extract the downloaded file to your device/pc) then rename (case sensitive) font files accordingly: Clockopia.ttf, DroidSans.ttf, DroidSans-Bold.ttf. copy these to sd & push to /system/fonts/ using similar cp command/s from OP.
for pop up animation, you could follow this guide. no need to sign after replacing files in /res/anim. copy modded framework-res.apk to sd then push to device via same commands in OP.
btw, wouldn't issuing "reboot" within adb shell be more convenient & safer after changing system files while booted to android? it's what i did instead of rebooting via power button, as you'll most likely see an FC fiesta after replacing these files.

Theses are good suggestions, will definitely give them a try.
As for changing system fonts, I like to use the Font Installer app on the market
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.canvs2321.font_installer&hl=en The nice thing is I can preview the fonts before changing them.
As for the reboot, actually I did try using the reboot command once but it toasted my rom on that occasion. That's why I didn't mention the method in the guide. May be I should give that another try next time.
Hopefully, we will get CWM soon then it will be much easier to flash these mods.

Kernel battery driver is very simplistic and only has 5% increments in the numbers it returns.
On my list to look at once I finish CWM - no guarantees.

Getting late and I have to work in the morning but I will put something together about how to use zipthemer. I have used it on several phones and once you get it working, you can do a bunch of things with it. Create themes, custom boot animations, revert.zips. You can also take pieces from different themes and package theme all together into one update.zip with an undo.zip just in case. I'll put it together in the morning.
I just figured it out...
Go to Zip Themer
Click on +Theme
Click on the green arrow and navigate to the zip file you want to use
Click on build it! then select if you want it to create a revert flash able zip
After it's done building the flashable file go into recovery mode and flash the file zipthemer created (it's not in a folder).

Reboot

Bingo.
It also works with Metamorphs too (if anyone needs some, I have a ton-just PM me). Say you want to revamp your whole status bar.
All you do it hit the +Theme and find your metaporphs (in zip form), and 1 by 1 add them in (*tip if doing this make sure the status bar itself it #1, if you are changing transparency or color. Then everything will build on top of it).
Now that you have all the morphs in there, click Build It (it is always prpbably the best idea to make the Undo.zip as well, just in case).
+Output just tells Zipthemer where to put the finished product.
Flash into recovery and install (I always wipe cache too). Don't like the finished product, reboot into recovery and flash the undo.zip and no harm no foul.

I don't know what the hell I'm doing wrong, but no matter what steps I take, when I flash the file created by zipthemer, nothing gets changed. It still has the regular animation that came stock on the rom.

I'm not real sure what your wanting, but you may be barking up the wrong tree. A theme is simply a collection of visual setting changed to match. Depending if your running a custom rom or not (assuming you are if you flashed a theme), you can change this, but I doubt very seriously that you will much or any performance gains. What we could do is start by discussing your issues and possibly recommend changes to help you get things moving smoother.
Make a list of files changed in theme, and replace them with the ones from original ROM.
if you have a nandroid from before you themed--you should--just restore it--
It's not your theme that's spring down your phone. Look for other issues.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk
I want to un theme as well. Not for performance reasons, just cause I'm bored of it and want the old look again atleast my app icons, I like the rest of the theme. I did not do anything special before installing this theme on Saurom ROM so no Nandroid. How can I get back to stock theme??? I have looked everywhere and no luck getting any useful info.
Making a theme revert instructions:
Take the ROM zip, and the theme zip on your pc. Make a copy of the theme and rename it revert(or whatever you want)
Now, open both the ROM and your newly made zip with 7zip
put the windows side by side
Ignoring the "meta-INF" folder go into each folder of the revert til you get to the apks, doing the same with ROM zip, til your open to the same place.
take all the apks that match the ones in revert from the ROM and drag and drop them into the revert... Thus overwriting the ones in the revert presently.
Do this for each folder with apks in it(again not touching the meta-INF folder)
After that's done just close it up and transfer t0 phone and flash in recovery.
Thanks so much man, I'll give that a try. I'd like to leave everything the same except the app icons. I really like the rest of it as is. Thanks again!
