Hero arriving tomorrow! Do i need to input settings? - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have purchased a 1 week old Hero (well a T-Mobile G2 Touch) that I will be unlocking. I also want to upgrade the firmware to the most upto date version. I feel more comfortable with upgrading it to the latest t-mobile version of the rom and seeing what its like, i'm sure i'll get bored and try out a custom rom later but for now i want to play with it with the official rom. Several people have told me that I need to unlock the phone and that it doesnt matter whether i do this before or after I upgrade the rom.
But the question is, I will be using this with my 3 sim in the UK, will the phone know my settings or will i need to input these manually, things like internet settings?
Many thanks
Simon

Make sure the device can use a usim card if you want to use it with 3

i hadnt even considered if it would take a usim - surely it does because the hardware is identical to a hero, also i'm sure i've read other people using a t mobile g2 on 3

[SOLVED]Unlocked Hero OTA Updates

Yes i know the phone is new and probably will receive updates atm but i just had a few questions.
I live in the US and currently have Tmobile USA. I'm planing to buy an unlocked phone (most likely in the US if i can) and run it on tmobile. Yes i know no 3g, wifi will do.
Question
1) How will updates work if i don't have the provider specified for the phone or a phone with no required provider?
(this should be the same as someone who has an unlocked HTC Dream phone with no other branding. Did you get updates? and if you did how?)
2) Since this phone will be HTC branded will I be able to obtain software updates such as Donut, Eclair, and Flan? (I don't mind manual updates )
you ll be able to get updates ota.. as long as your price plan has internet tariff or you have wifi spots ....doesnt matter your not with the intended provider. alternativley when these clever bots on xda dev find root...most probably be able to manually update.
thats what i was thinking, i will be using wifi.
I was kinda not exactly sure because i read that for the g1's the reason why people got updates at different times was because tmobile sends the updates in many different groups
well had the g1 but i got the update as soon as it came out and im using it orange. never put a tmobile sim in it. that was ota as well on a 3g connection...good luck anyways.
cool thanks for the info!
I hope this is correct, cos as far as i understood it, only the google branded handsets got updated OTA.
I know HTC have RUU programs for updating from PC's and that this was there preferred method that they wanted to use....
well as i always say always trust a senior....i imgained it was the same for hero(ota updates ..) if it is then there should be no problem, if what you say is correct than i have no idea whatsover but still recommend getting a hero, cos they are the nuts! hope this helps and cheers for the post r hedghog and for clearing things up
No probs. From what i hear, Samsung are going down the sideloading route for the Galaxy as well, instead of OTA.
I could of course be wrong, but that is what i heard.
I hope i'm wrong cos OTA is so much easier!!

[Q] X10a rooted firmware issues.

I just bought a used X10a today, Not my first android but my first rooted phone, (bought it rooted and unlocked. It is running 2.2.1) and there alot of issues and I just can't seem to find out what exactly I need to do so I can actually use this phone. First off it was originally a AT&T phone, I use Cincinnati Bell so the unlock is a must.
My first big issue is no matter what I am doing swiping through menus, screens, options you name it, it is laggy and jittery and half the time wont move just goes nuts for a few seconds.
The next issue is I can not for the life of me get 3g to work, edge works but no 3g. I used the exact apn settings as my other phone which is an unlocked tmobile and works fine but not on this one.
my last problem is I am missing tons of the factory installed apps, I do not mean the bloatware and irratating things that come on phones that arent needed, but things that I really need like a music app, the maps app, the email apps, all of that. All I have are the bare bones needed to run stuff, dialer, and messaging. That wouldnt be to big of a deal but nothing on the market will download it says download unsuccessful every time for any app, So i am not able to get all the things i am missing.
Also I do not know if it matters but I feel I need to mention it, The About Phone section on the phone says it is a x10i but the phone is actually an x10a so I do not know if that has anything to do with my problem but throwing it out there.
I really like this phone but I can't use it like this. What I need to do is either downgrade it to a rooted 2.1 so I have everything and it works or get a good 2.2 rom that will actually work. The problem is I have never rooted a phone so I do not know what steps to take let alone adjusting a phone that is already rooted.
So would it be possible for me to downgrade to a proven working 2.1 rom or is there a 2.2 rom for this phone that is proven to work and not cause all these issues I am having right now?
All help is greatly appreciated,
Cody
Cody,
CBW uses TMO's 3G infrastruacture (1700+2100 frequency bands). X10a is equipped with a radio that works on AT&T's 3G bands (850+1900) but not TMO's. X10a does not work on TMO's (therefore CBW's) 3G. It's a hardware issue. For 2G you won't have any problem. Therefore the fastest data speed you can get with X10a on CBW is EDGE. On the other hand, X10i should work on CBW 3G.
I would say that what it says on the "About Phone" section probably doesn't matter. I tried a tons of custom and stock ROMs available here with a variety of radio firmware but I haven't experienced any difficulty with AT&T. Then again you are trying to use X10a on TMO.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1012380
This should help you with some of your other problems. Rooting and flashing a ROM on X10 is very very easy, thanks to all the developers here who contributed.
With my phone already being rooted and flashed would I still do it just as if it was all stock?
My only other question is would a generic 2.1 rom still leave the phone unlocked for use with any sim?
Thanks, Cody
I'm not a tech but from what I understand and I did in the past, once SIM is unlocked, the phone will stay unlocked no matter what firmware you flash, including a generic 2.1 ROM.
Rooting and recovery are different. When you flash a stock SE 2.1 ROMs, you will lose root and recovery. That's where the flashtool comes in handy to get root and flash recovery again.

[Q] When my Droid Pro will get Gingerbread ?

I got imported Verizon Droid Pro and I live in Turkey. Also I bought the phone second hand (probably unlocked with some kind of software). I did some things on the day I bought it, even installed Gingerbread manually and rooted it. Most of the time I was unable to receive calls. So I decided to do a factory reset. After reset phone began to ask for activation number that may be taken from Verizon. I don't know if first owner did this. I some kind of "by-passed" activation screen by touching the corners etc. After that I put in my own AVEA sim card. Phone found 2 OTA updates and I installed them effortlessly.
Here is my question:
Its told that Gingerbread update is being sent to Droid Pros officially as OTA. The date 31 May seems to be the day it started. Although my phone got 2 updates at the beginning, none of them is for Gingerbread.
Its 28 September and my phone is still 2.2.1 (Froyo).
Am I wrong about expected updates, is my phone wrong about saying its up-to-date when system update is controlled or is it Verizon ?
I'm confused, please help me on this not found official Gingerbread update
Go here: http://www.androidtotal.com/manually-download-install-android-2.3.3-update-motorola-droid-pro/ . This should solve your problem.
I already did the exact same thing with same steps but I had severe in-call problems. Its been told around the web that Droid Pro is getting OTA Gingerbread update officially but why I don't have that since than ? Should every Droid Pro user do this manually, I guess no ?
This manual update is the EXACT update which would have come automatically. So this should work just as well as the automatic one since it's the same thing.
I just wonder why my Droid Pro does not find any updates since months although its available to some owners. I did that so-called update manually and it almost ruined my phone. I guess Verizon is editing a new update just for me

Highly unlikely . You mentioned a SIM card in your first post. How are you using one if the device is a CDMA device?
Edit: Solved

My sim card was not in while I did factory reset.
After it is completed I put in the SIM card and powered on the phone (I don't remember exactly if sim card was in or not), it asked me for the Verizon activation code.
I bypassed the screen with touching - upper left - upper right - down right - down left (some kind of witchcraft you see).
Just entered my SIM password and got full control of the phone. Its not rooted or so. Successfully received 2 OTA updates for Froyo.
After that moment Verizon got afraid of my skills and never bothered me
I think I will not manually install the update. Challange accepted, I will wait for it

Removing the ROM of an HTC demo unit AT&T

Hello people
So i my problem is that i have recently baught an htc one m8 AT&T device . and i found that the android that it's running on it, is just for the demo units it's 4.4 kitkat , moreover i have also some issue with the hotspot option and the network choosing option, like i don't have the ability to choose which network to use 2G or 3G or 4G it's all the time 4G .and you all know that the M8 has got already the lollipop android version on April but mine still on it's demo android version
i have tried the hard reset but it did not work also the did the updates for AT&T apps also did nothing.
please if any one can help me out with a solution i will be more then thankful. also may you know that i'm not a professional android developer so if i goona need to have some files please provide me with them or their path
Was the phone advertised/described by the seller as a demo unit? If not, its obviously a fraudulent sale; and you should seek a refund or exchange, rather than messing with the phone any longer. This is not a fully functioning phone without significant mods by you, taking time and possibly even money.
Hard reset just wipes user data, and won't do anything to solve this issue.
Network type (2G, 3G, 4G) is locked out on the AT&T version, as is the WiFi hotspot. You may be able to unlock the bootloader and flash a custom ROM to make this a fully functioning unit. But you may also need to s-off the phone ($25 by sunshine).
Depending on your intention/response to the above comments, I'll be happy to help you more.
Thank you bro for your support. my problem is that i cannot go back to dealer because i'm not actually in the US and thing is i have contacted him by my brother who baught it for me from there, he said he didn't know about that problem till now ,he sent me some pictures of the other htc phones that he is selling and they turned out that all of them are just demo units and not for sell.
While i was looking on the internet i found that rooting my phone and installing a custom rom is my solution after all ,exactly as you said.

Not just any ROM. Since the device is on KitKat firmware, you will want a KitKat M8 ROM. Otherwise, you will have severe bugs, such as extreme long boot time (or no boot), or broken WiFi.

Purchasing LeEco Le Max 2 - AT&T

I am thinking about purchasing the LeEco Le Max 2 to use with AT&T. I've been reading on XDA and it seems like the US variant is the x829 one. I'd love to have the 6GB RAM model but the x829 does not have 6GB RAM.
Is there anyone here using the 6GB RAM model without issues (especially getting LTE to work) on AT&T? or maybe T-Mobile? If yes, which hardware variant do you have? The x820/x821/x82x...etc? and from where did you buy your device? Please share the full link if you have it.
Also is there a guide that shows which bands each variant supports?
Thanks guys, really appreciate any feedback.
Google "le max 2 x829 128gb" you'll find many places to purchase a 6gb/128gb x829 for as low as $245. I have the 4/64 x829 running stock rom on T-mobile with full coverage on lte. To my understanding the only band that's problematic is band 20 which we dont use in the united states. I bought it for my wife who wanted a rose gold model which is not offered in the 829 but I forced the gold 829 variant on her because I wanted direct access to the 829 rom so I can do some deving on it. I'm ordering a rose gold 4/32 for her Thursday for $193. When it arrives I'm going to clone her rom directly to the 820 then take over the 829 and have some fun. As for the 829 we currently have she loves it, loves the screen loves the camera loves the new ui (I hate it but to each their own). Call quality is great, volte works and even wi-fi calling on tmo works. As a comparison my wifes last phone was a Moto X 2015 (xt1575)
@castuis Thank you for the information. Do you mind if I ask from which website/seller you brought the phone? also where are you seeing the 6gb/128gb for $245?
Got mine from tinydeal. Ali express for the 128gb but they bumped it up to $259 about an hour ago, plus you couldn't pay me to order from them, made that mistake a few years back.
I am awaiting a silver 6GB/128GB from coolicool.com.
My first order with them, but they have been conversing with me via email since I changed the shipping address.
I 'should' have it with the next week? I hope it arrives and has a good fingerprint scanner?
@fcreeves I'm thinking about ordering from coolicool as well. Did you order from the Hong Kong warehouse or the Europe warehouse? Can you please let me know the condition of the phone when you receive it and which variant is it? x820 or x821 or x822 or x829?
A friendly word of warning. Success with the phones on T-mobile is not an indicator of how well they will work on AT&T, even though they are both GSM networks. For example, if voLTE is important to you, you are very likely not going to get it on AT&T. It is not automatically provisioned on AT&T, unless they know your phone intimately (and they don't know the Max 2 from a tin can and a string.) The first line of tech support refuses to even enable it on "unlocked" phones. There's also no means for WiFi calling, via an app or otherwise, unless you count the microcell boxes.
I'm tempted to call "BS" on anyone who says they are using these features on AT&T with these phones, based on the time I have spent on the phone with tech support..
Under the right conditions (read: areas), the phones work great on the AT&T network. Fast LTE data, and decent call reliability. But if if you want the bells and whistles, and enhanced reliability, the Max 2 can't deliver what the more mainstream brands can on AT&T. Even when right next to a tower, with the Max 2 showing full bars, I am unable to make calls, while every major branded phone brought into that same area has no problems. So something isn't 100% with these phones.
@RandyT2 I really appreciate the feedback.
@fcreeves, I'll be waiting for a feedback from you on the phone condition & fingerprint scanner.
I do have X829 64GB in the Boston area and I just got the Straight Talk AT&T nano sim yesterday. Popped it in, transferred my #. Had to change my APN in order to get LTE working, but everything seems good now. I don't know about VoltLTE, but everything else seems OK (for the moment).
With Straight Talk you have the option to go either Sprint/AT&T/T-Mobile or Verizon. I was using AT&T on my Nexus 5 so I thought I'd stick with it. Not sure if Verizon would be a better choice, but I didn't want to wait for them to send me another sim to test it.
The main issue for me right now is getting the fingerprint sensor working and rooting/flashing my ROM which seems a daunting task.
@Wagmans thank you for your feedback, not sure why many have issues with the fingerprint scanner and some don't have issues at all with it. It would be good to know if it's a hardware or software thing.

Can you give me some idea as to the ROM and Baseband version of the X829 phones you have? I really need WiFi calling, if I wish to keep this phone (which I do), and the way I understand that the T-mobile Wifi calling works is that the ROM detects that its an option based on the connection with the carrier, and the option just appears on the phone.
I'm ready to ditch AT&T because I have a fairly unique situation which makes the phone virtually useless to me without WiFi calling. But I need to make sure that I'm not switching, just to have the same issues, or to find out that only the X829 version supports it.
Thank you!

I think it's more of a software thing. We'll know once I root/flash it if that's the case. The root/flash process for this phone seems so involved. A little overwhelming- I hope I don't brick it.

It's too easy to flash TWRP, flash a new ROM, root and do all the things you need with it. This phone is practically unbrickable as you have a guide that teaches you how to unbrick it. Still, it's as easy as it gets to play with it.
@Wagmans please keep us updated if you get the fingerprint scanner to work
Yeah keep us posted. I'm interested in this phone. I have a Samsung S5 which I love and still use with no issues, but I'd like to have dual sim and have redpocket 99$ per year plan and Freedompop free data on the other. This set up will end up saving me hundreds of $$ per year.

Or a human thing. I got my wife the x820 in January. Immediately flashed TeamSpain's CM13 understanding the stock firmware had fingerprint scanner issues. All that, and only to learn she rarely gets the phone to accept her print, but when I pick it up it works every time. So there is obviously a human print component in the equasion that determines the FP scanner works, in addition to hardware & firmware.
I pulled the trigger on the TinyDeal 64 x829 today for $202 for myself. Leaving the Moto G4 xt1625 behind as a backup. I'm sorry, 2 GB RAM on my Moto G4 is insufficient. We expect our phones to be computers, and they are, but we'd never expect to run 2GB RAM on a modern day desktop. I'd really like to see a 32GB model with 6GB RAM.

I'll fool around with it. I'm still confused as to exactly which ROM I should flash and still have US Straight Talk/AT&T compatibility? Would the stock Indian ROM work? How about the Chinese? I don't know what the differences are (needs to have English, obviously). It would be nice to flash a stock ROM and be able to get the software updates from LeEco (as opposed to being locked out with my modified 16s now).
Oh, and as far as I can tell, VoLTE/MMS is working for me on AT&T in the Boston area.
So to sum up, everything is good for me on this phone except fingerprint and new/better ROM. I'll see if I can resolve that once I get some answers as to which ROM to flash.

I'd say if you want updates from LeEco, then don't flash. IMO security updates are really what's at stake.
Ideally:
(1) you want a stable rom with all the bells and whistles to make you happy, and
(2) the dev is updating the rom every MONTH with google's security patches.
But we don't live in an ideal world. TeamSpains CM13 rom may be the best google stock-like rom out there, but it appears not to be 'updated' anymore. It's very stable and everything just works. So from a performance standpoint, it's great. But from a security standpoint maybe not. But then again, branded carrier phones sometimes never get security updates

As far as I remember, the Chinese one has no limitations such as SIM1 4G and SIM2 only 3G or less. I'm using the Chinese one for quite some time and I'm happy with it. The Indian ROM has Play store but will add an encryption to your phone. In case you want to flash something again using TWRP, you have to format internal memory. The US version that was leaked 3-4 months ago had a limit of 4G on SIM1 only and 3G on SIM2.
Once you will flash the ROM, don't root it, otherwise you will not receive updates and you have to flash the new official stock again when it comes out. Search "manual gapps" to install Play Store on it.
Any ROM has English on it, even the Chinese, and it's not "translated"
About the AT&T compatibility, I'm not so sure. Maybe somebody from US can help on that matter.
