Now my Hero is unlocked can i go back to default ROM - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I went through the long time consuming process in order to unlock my Hero from the Orange UK network. I ended up with a custom rom Default [ROM] Hero 2.1 UPDATE 1.4 [4/12/09]. However im finding this full of bugs. As im new to android i would like to get a stable ROM on there (like the standard Orange one) and was wondering if i put the origional one on there will the phone still be unlocked?
Alternativly if you can suggest any stable ROMS that would be great.
Kusky
HTC HERO
HTC TOUCH HD

can anyone help with this info? would ideally like to sort this tonight

Reason no one replied is because your Q is not clear.
First how did you manage to change from Orange rom to generic, if I understood you, bypassing CID?

first of all this is in the wrong section of the forum, this belongs to q&a not development.
if we we are talking about simlock here it is my understanding that it is independant of the rom, and therefore not changed by a custom or stock rom. i have no experience with this, i'm happily using my hero with the provider selling it here so you might get a second opinion on that.
if you want a fast, stable, rooted custom rom get modaco 3.0.

+1 on MoDaCo's latest ROM - you don't want an original ROM as it will unroot your phone and make it difficult to root it again after it has been applied.
The unlocking only applies to allowing your phone accept SIMs from different providers - that is independent of your ROM. My Telus Hero is unlocked and working on the Rogers network.

Not quite true - the Orange version of 2.73 had a problem when entering unlock codes. Whether this was a bug or by design isn't known, but in order to circumvent it you have to flash a non-Orange ROM to actually unlock.
I would imagine that the phone would remain unlocked if you flashed back to the Orange ROM, as I think it was more of a code entry/saving issue, but I'd add another vote for a MoDaCo ROM.

Debranding HTC Hero- comments?

Hello. I have just received a new G2 (aka Hero) on T-mobile UK.
I am planning on doing this, please can you tell me if this would work:
1.Installing a recovery image
2.Booting into recovery and making a Nandroid backup
3.Installing a generic HTC Rom which has been packed into update.zip NB.Rom is a stock rom and therefore not rooted
As I understand after flashing I would lose rooting and would need to root again if I need to. However, I don't need to so am not too bothered.
I am hoping that this would remove T-Mobile branding, but mainly make the phone quicker as it is running the latest ROM. Would this technique work?
I would also like to know wether my sim-lock status would be affected?
Also if Donut/Android 1.6 is released OTA by HTC would my phone update OTA?
Finally, does that mean once I have flashed it, I will not be able to access the recovery partition thing which includes Nandroid etc.?
Please answer my questions and comment if you have any reservations/concerns about this. All comments are much appreciated.
bump-please help
Bit previous with the bump after such a sort time??
To answer your questions:
First of all, as long as your G2 still has the original Hero firmware, you are probably ok with your plan. If you've got the latest firmware, you'll probably have to use the gold card technique.
If you install a generic ROM, you'll lose most the T-Mobile branding, but to be honest there was very little anyway. The T-Mobile splash screen when you switch on will remain though.
SIM-lock has nothing to do with your ROM - it was locked before it will still be locked after you update the ROM, and vice versa.
Finally, on the subject of an OTA, who knows???!!! I really wouldn't worry about it.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks Dave. Does anyone else have anything to say?
new user, similar question.
got myself a T-mobile G2 yesterday, thinking that it's the same thing as HTC Hero. ok, it's only a software difference but now i'm unable to flash it.
software version is 2.73.116.61 which is T-mobile version of course, and comparing version numbers to recent ones it looks really outdated. is it? on T-mobile UK support pages it's even older one. tried to download official version but HTC says there is no support for my device, based on serial number. also tried to flash with newest downloaded from here but no luck, got error 131
so, what can I do? root or goldcard?
thanx
You will need to goldcard to downgrade your ROM, before you'll be able to "upgrade" it to a custom ROM.

Dave

Debranding Optimus Hero (ORANGE)
Hi everyone.
I am an Android rookie, but i am trying to learn more and more each day.
I bought recently a HTC Hero from optimus operator (Portugal) - Orange - and it came with 1.5 version of the OS. There is original 2.1 version but not for my operator.
I already made an goldcard for it, removed simlock, and rooted but now i would like to know step by step what to do?
what rom (original and generic) should i install to have 2.1?
How to do it, with goldcard inside cellphone?
It is possible to go back?
I have read in Q&A that some orange phones, whem the debranding is done, loose the network due to some radio network imcompabilities... how can i know if that is or is not my case?
I would be greatful for all the help someone could give me.
Many thanks
D_Saint
Look at the guides in the android development section of how to root. If the phone is running a very old firmware the likelyhood is that you won't need to downgrade and therefore may not need a goldcard. But basically, you need to root and install a recovery image then you can flash a rom from the hero development section.

Upgrading HTC Hero Orange UK

Hi!
I have a GSM Orange UK HTC Hero updated to the latest FW from Orange. I hear 2.1 release is quite close and HTC will be releasing the general version and after god know how long Orange should come up with a release as well.
I have now unlocked my phone to all networks, and currently using with 3 UK. I was wondering if I upgrade from my Orange ROM to the General one released by HTC, will it work?
Thanks in advance!
how did you unlock your phone pls. ???

Yes it will work fine,... Only issue I can see arising is that you will have to add your apn settings manually, but thats no deal-breaker. ....
.... Do it,.... You have nothing to lose.
use this to teach yourself how to do it,... [Guide] Newbie Guide to Install a Custom Rom [Updated 19/03]
... then pick a ROM from either here,... [ROM] Official HTC Hero RUU ROM Links,...
Or here,... Modaco's Stock ROMs + radios in update.zip format for GSM Hero
I have supplied the Modaco link as they have links to Pre-rooted standard ROMs which may be of use to you also.
I'v had my phone for about 6 weeks now,... Installed the latest Modaco ROM (MCR3.2) on the first day and haven't felt the need to change it yet,... I'm happy to wait for a 100% stable Android 2.1 release.... i.e... MCR4 BABY!!!!!... Cant wait!!!
The phone might not let you put anything other than an Orange Rom on your phone (if it was origionally an orange handset) you would have to use the "goldcard method" to enable you to trick the phone into installing other carriers or generic roms.
I suggest that you just root the device and use a rooted rom, will save all the hassle in trying to switch between official roms, and you don't have to lose any of the functionality.

I have a feeling that orange Rom wont let you use anything other than the orange Rom. I think if you root it you might be able to flash it to the general one, but then again if you have root might as well get a custom one instead.

followed the instructions on the unlockr..strangely enough it told me to downgrade using i think goldcard method but i just downloaded the old RUU from htc and htc sync it.(somehow it downgraded, dun ask me how)..the rest was to follow the steps
You don't need a gold card for the Orange handsets (well I didn't). Just install a new recovery then you can update with any zip file you like.
I would start over at Modaco as there is a thread called "Installing the patched recovery image on your device" in the sticky section.

ROM upgrade required or not?

Hi
I have an Orange (UK) HTC Hero. Works fine actually. However, i spotted a ROm upgrade dated 2010-02-04 on the HTC website (ROM Version:2.73.61.66 for Orange). Currently I am running version 2.73.61.5.
Do I get any benefit from upgrading to the new ROM version, and if yes, what would the benefit be?
Also, I understood from HTCs website that an upgrade wipes out everything on my phone, including Orange's setup. Does this mean that the phone also becomes sim free?
If I do perform the upgrade, how can I restore Orange's settings? SHould I write them down before I perform the upgrade, or could I go to the Orange shop and ask them to set it up for me?
Any advice would be appreciated
Anyone ???
Bro I M Also facing the same situation .. I Also want to know the Ans. can anyone Helps me ? Should I install New RUU ? Or not ?
I wouldnt update, as this is still Android 1.5. Don't forget, that the offical 2.1 update will be released in june.
Actually, by now Orange UK is the only provioder worldwide that has not rolled out 2.1 for the Hero. So I say screw them, and I went for villainROM 12. Best thing I ever did, except I probably need to update the radio firmware, as now it seems to have degraded reception.
I now got all the goodies one would want on my hero. Now to unlock it! (but I know where to get a code for that, so no worries).
Remain in that version 2.73.61.5. it's very easy to root from there. the latest one .61.66 won't allow you to root.

HTC, HTC Desire X ROMs, CID ... questions

Hello,
I'm quite new with android devices and have read several topics here, but still have some questions. So I do apologize if it's answered or explained already somewhere, but I haven't found it.
Let me first explain what my assumption was and what are now.
1. HTC kernel/update - So HTC is getting generic android from google and make and add their modifications.
- Maybe there are some difference in the ROMs and/or devises for different regions like Europe, Asia, America ... , but not sure if it's correct and why it is needed at all, unless it is something specific with network carriers
- I do not understand the reason to have a different ROM or OAU per network carrier unless that the update should be approved by the carrier /why needed/. If so, what about the countries and carriers not available on htcdev site, that means such operators and countries use generic regional like WWE Eastern Europe or EU, but who is approving them in that case
- currently there are quite big difference to updates and versions available for different regions and carrier operators
2. Is there any way to get stock/original ROMs
So till recently I believed there is a generic ROM and depending on your home network/operator/carrier you got OAU or not, but it turned out that is completely wrong. It seems the phone is preloaded with a specific ROM made for specific operator or more generic one like EU, and depending on those ROM you have particular update or not.
- still not sure what the reason for this is
3. What is the meaning of CID on particular ROM, isn't it just a simple configuration in a configuration file into ROM.
I thought if you have stock ROM with different CID inside than current one, you should be able to flash the phone with it and it should work. Possible issues should be only with network carrier , but all the rest should work, isn't that correct.
4. If you flash you phone would your IMEI and/or CID change or the CID is hw locked and not into ROM
5. Is there any way to change the CID
6. I've read a lot in the forum in regards to ROMs, but still not clear
- is there any really original stock ROMs
- why people having issues with stock ROM depending on their current CID, and the ROM is working with some and doesn't with others
- what is the problem with OAU after change of the ROM with stock one
7. Is it possible to make a image of my phones without rooting them
8. What's the problem to get the ROM from one phone and put it in another as both are original coming from HTC with devices
I do not want to root the device or put custom ROM for now, but interested in having original HTC ROM with different CID than the current one, and trying to understand the setup and how it is working and how can it be done.
I own two Desire X which happened to be with different ROMs and CIDs, one Orange CH, the other T-Mobile PL, so there are some difference, so I would prefer to have them both identical may be EU or Eastern Europe ROMs inside and have the corresponding OAU working .
appreciate you help.

[Q] Help with updating to 5.0

I just got a new unlocked AT&T M8, switched over from iPhone. I'm going to be using it with T-Mobile, and I'm still struggling to learn how all this stuff works. So the phone is running on Android 4.4.4 currently, and I want to install a custom ROM on it, but I need Android 5.0. Since I have a T-Mobile sim card, I don't have any OTA updates. From what I understand, if I wanted to switch to a T-Mobile ROM, I'd have to pay $25 for Sunshine, which I'd rather not do. Would I also need to do so to get an international ROM? Also, from what I'm reading, my other option is to use the AT&T RUU from HTC's website to update to 5.0, and then install a custom ROM from there. Is this correct, would that remove my unlock, and are there instructions/recommended readings before I try anything? Thanks for any help.

You probably want the T-Mob radio software, so you can enable the 3G and LTE bands used by T-Mob. Otherwise, you will find that the AT&T radio does not give you 3G and LTE in many locations.
In order to flash another carrier's radio, you need s-off, and there is no way around that. Then you need to change the carrier ID (CID) and model ID (MID) to that of T-Mob.
At that point, you may as well RUU to a stock factory T-Mobile software image (not just the radio) and that would be recommended, is it will get you a complete T-Mobile "baseline" phone as opposed to an AT&T ROM with T-Mob radio, etc.
After running the T-Mob RUU, your phone will be "fully converted" to the T-Mob version in terms of software. Others here have converted the AT&T version for use on T-Mob. So I'll try to find one of those threads instead of trying to explain it all again.
None of these mods will change your SIM unlock. That will remain unlocked.

Another point: You can update to the latest AT&T Lollipop software by RUU. And you can flash custom Lollipop ROMs after that. But neither of these will enable the 3G and LTE bands used by T-Mob. So that is why I suggest "converting" the phone to T-Mob stock software instead.
Thanks for the response! Appreciate it. A few more questions, since I'm not sure I fully grasp the concept of radios.
If I first flash a T-Mobile ROM, and then install a custom ROM, is that any different from updating with a AT&T RUU and then installing a custom ROM? Will I still be missing the bands?
If yes, then should I just stay away from Custom ROMs all together? Is this a problem because I bought an AT&T phone?
Thanks again!

Yes it's different the AT&T ruu won't give you the T-Mobile bands. And you can install custom roms if you want but I would reccomend paying the $25 to s-off and fully converting to t-mobile and either stay on stock or flash a custom t-mobile rom

I think your first phrase was intended to read "flash the T-Mob RUU, then install a custom ROM".
The radio is not contained in the ROM, and flashing a ROM doesn't affect the radio in any way.
The radio is contained in what many folks here called the "firmware package" or firmware.zip; and it can be installed by flashing the RUU.
Another thing that will help you understand, is that the phone has something like 36 (or more) partitions. The ROM is just one of those. The radio is a separate partition (as bootloader, recovery, and others have their own separate partitions as well). Flashing one partition, does not effect the others. The RUU is a complete software image that flashes all the partitions to factory stock for a certain carrier version.
You can also flash the radio or firmware.zip manually (without flashing the whole RUU). But my personal recommendation would be to baseline to a fully stock T-Mobile software profile, since you are on the T-Mob network, to make sure every partition plays well together (as opposed to mixing T-Mob and AT&T software components).

I wouldn't say that. Custom ROMs have their place. But a custom ROM will not open up the T-Mob bands. As mentioned, you can only do that by flashing the radio, which isn't affected by flashing the ROM.
After baselining to a T-Mob stock config as I've suggested, you can feel free to flash a custom recovery and flash custom ROMs if you like. But if would be for other reasons than the radio bands; such as performance, customization, debloating, etc..

Basically yes. If you want to be sure a phone works fully on a certain network "out of the box", you should buy the phone that is branded for that network. Otherwise, you should always thoroughly research a phone (not branded for your carrier) before trying to use it on your network.
Luckily for you, on this device the radio bands can be changed in software using the mods I've noted above. On past devices, the band support was set in hardware, meaning where was no way to change it in software. In that case, you would really have some buyer's remorse to deal with.
Ah OK thanks for the responses! I think I'm starting to understand. I did research how an At&t m8 would work with T-MOBILE but I didn't realize i would have to go throw this whole software process to make it work! Anyhow I appreciate the help and I'll buy a Sunshine license when I get a chance. Thanks again!
You are quite welcome.
