Definitive Proof- Eris screen is scratchproof. - Droid Eris General

Well, scratch resistant, anyway.
Point is, it's definitely not plastic, like some people are choosing to believe.
Just did the test myself. Here's the video.

CRAZY

thats pretty crazy

I cringed when I saw him taking that pocket knife to the poor unsuspecting phone.. Glad to know it's scratch proof though.

Ya that was pretty informative. Thanks Zilliano

No problem. I got tired of all the bullcrap flying around about it being 'hybrid plastic' or just plastic, so I decided to settle the score.
Though sadly I did drop it the other day and it nicked a metal part of my car on the long, long fall... and there's a itty bitty little nick in the screen now. I don't even notice it most of the time, and I sure as heck can't feel it, though. It's about half the size of a grain of a sand and about is deep. I can only see it in direct sunlight, thankfully. XD

I believe the proper name for this kind of screens is "scratch-resistant", not "proof". Nexus One has a similar screen, but it does get scratches eventually w/o a screen protector.

The Eris isn't really scratch resistant, or scratch proof..
I have plenty of scratches on my screen.. albeit a little hard to notice..but they're there.

I think you missed everything but the title of the thread. XD
I said 'Well, scratch-resistant, anyway."
So nyeh.
My point was proving it wasn't plastic like some were convinced it was.

I think it's scratch resistant when coins nor keys can scratch it, and a ton of pressure is needed for glass to scratch it.
I think ANY glass screen is scratch resistant. Especially coming from a plastic screen.

Dude, you are nuts! I'm glad you did it though. I have never liked screen protectors, but was always worried about scratches. By the way, you should put some kind of warning before the video plays, "not suitable for people with weak stomachs" or something like that.

That was a little nerve racking but thank you...

I wasn't very convinced with the youtube post, so i brought it upon myself to try it on a floor model at a bby. Not a scratch! (or cut)

A copycat AND a non-believer? IT'S THE STAKE FOR YOU!

I keep my eris in my toolbelt all day. It has about 7 scratches in it. got it the day it came out. definitely not scratch proof. absolutely scratch resistant. not to mention the screen protectors i got initially were useless. I could not seperate the protector from its backing and ended up bending every one I had.

I have that same case. I've have my Eris since day one. I have No scratches whatsoever. I've dropped my phone a few times, and carry it around in my pocket. Definitely a great phone.

I like how reading this thread there are adds for screen protectors at the top
Anyway, it's good to know that a knife and keys won't scratch the screen, now I won't worry as much about dumb stuff scuffing/scratching it up.

After watching the video I thought I would take off all the protective stuff I had on my Eris. Two days later I had it in my front shirt pocket with a pen and it turns out that the metal clip on the pen put a little scratch on the screen. You can only see it if the screen is off and you look at it at the right angle but whenever my fingernail hits it, I get angry with myself for taking the screen protector off.

i never had a screen protector on my phone, but i bought mine from a guy on craigslist who sent his old eris in for a "new" refurbished one before selling it. and the sucker looked brand new. i run with my phone in my pocket and it fell out one day on an asphalt track at the park. put a tiny ~2mm scratch on it and a little dot from sliding/skidding about 3 feet face down... not to shabby... i barely notice it...

I have a similar case and drop my phone a lot.... no issues. Had a screen protector on my origional Eris, but after having to relplace the phone, I never put a screen protector back on. Good to see its not so easy to scratch it.

Anyone not using a screen protector after months of use?

Trying to decide if I should take my Realook off. Great protection but damn this thing get's so greasy. Really tired of constantly having to clean it.
In 5 months of owning this phone I've never dropped it even once. I also never put anything into my "phone pocket". I'm careful enough, but I don't want to get any mysterious fine scratches. Anyway, anyone rocking their phone without a SP? Any scratches at all?

I had one but I took it off immediately because the dude in the T-Mobile store had something get under it while he was puting it on, and you can only assume how annoying that is to look at.
But I really should be using one.
Bieng able to put the phone almost anywhere without worrying about scratching the screen is... just too nice, IMO.
I've had my Vibrant since the week before the official release. Never had a screen protector, though I carry the phone around in a belt pouch and not in my pockets. Phone and screen is still scratch free...YMMV

I kept the stock protection and just snipped the tab off the top. Then put on a casemate case. Seems to be the perfect combo for me.
You realize that now you are going to drop your phone.. sorry but its like a motorcycle. Its not if you wreck, but when and how bad will it be.
I've dropped my vibrant more than once and my son thinks this phone can bounce. They are solid enough to take a pretty decent level of abuse.

Never a protector from day one (release day). I keep it in my pocket but use the old G1 pouch. But also dropped it in my car between the seat, in the sofa at the house etc and no scratches at all. The rear cover has quite a bit of hair line scratches but the glass is clear.
Sent from my SGS Vibrant.
Took mine off after a week. Carry it in my pocket with keys sometimes but I am extra careful.

Had the phone since launch and had a screen protector for about a month. Took it off and haven't had a screen scratch yet. Stays in my pocket typically by itself but the requisite drops behind couch, between car seat, etc have happened. The gorilla glass does an awesome job of keeping it from scratching due to normal wear and tear.
It does have gorilla glass right? Remember reading that somewhere...
Regardless, naked Vibe here, no scratches.
5 months now no screen protector. It has one very tiny (very very shallow) scratch near the bottom, from when I left my keys and the phone in the same pocket all day.
Screen protectors are nice, but I am extremely impressed as to how the display has held up so far. I'd say you dont need the protector, but keep keys or any sharp objects out of the same pocket as your phone.
Hadn't used a screen protector on mine since July with 0 scratches. Got out of the taxi a week ago and didn't realize my phone was on my lap. Phone flew screen down first into the street. Crack across the bottom and scratches at the top Placed my order for a realook screen protector the next day. Bad luck on my part, but it breaks my heart to see that crack so I'm not taking another chance.
Had the tmobile 2pack screen protector, but it made my screen look all glittery. Figured I got this phone for the awesome screen so I just go without one now. No scratches, and looks awesome still since July.
Had a Vibrant since day one. Been careful, but never had a screen protector and it looks perfect. I have had a few minor drops, and carry in pocket, with occasional company though I try my best to keep keys and coins away. Thought about it for awhile and then decided I had gone this long I would be fine... (now I jinxed myself with this post I am sure)
Thanks for the responses.
For the most part extremely positive results. Might very well give it a shot. I already have a T-mobile case on there which helps a bit so think I'll take my chances.
No screen protector since day one. Had two drops onto solid concrete from about five six feet only the chrome scratched. One day took a cat nap and didn't realize my phone fell to the floor when I got out of bed I stepped on it. Now I got a crack down the middle of the screen. Its just the glass though so I don't mind it much.

I had one from T-Mobile for a while and hated it. I finally decided that Gorilla Glass is hardcore and removed the screen protector. It's been fine with just a gel case. No scratches or dings. I'm also really careful with it though too.
Have had a screen protector and a case for a month. Not taking any chances, I know its gorilla glass, but I can be King Kong with my gadgets. I had an iPhone 2G that survived 3 years without any protection, but it was not a pretty sight.
No screen protection for me. I had a case but took that off. I did drop it once screen down into some dirt and have an annoying tiny chip on the screen but im dealing. And I bought a replacement battery cover that's rubberized and now I feel comfortable with no screen protection.

I still use one that came with it. I put it back on with water & credit card and it stuck on just fine lol. It's actually sticking so well i don't see it coming of anytime soon. Clipped off the top part so my case can go properly. Works fine.
Been running protector free since launch and I have a very small scratch towards the bottom from my tungsten ring. I' be done multiple lap flies and nothing yet but I'm starting to think it might be a good idea. At least get a gel case or something!

I tried the Reallook after all the rave reviews, and I admit it was nice at first.... but over time the appearance/finger prints/feel were just SO lacking copared to the feel/look of the gorilla glass.
I was a huge anti-SP person and am still that way even after my testing one out.

[Q] Screen protector for X2?

Hi all it's me again lol. I wanted to know your guys' recommendations for screen protectors for our wonderful device. I know it's made of gorilla glass and that it's really durable, but I have more of an issue with leaving fingerprints on the screen and not being able to smoothly drag my fingers across the screen and I wanted to know if you guys knew of any screen protectors with more of a matte feel. Thanks!

Personally i don't use anything
If you get the anti-glare ones from Verizon, they definitely help. It gives you a matte look and also takes away some of the "prettiness" of the screen. I bought some because my daughter was making my screen filthy, but ended up taking it off.
I bought some Vizio screen cleaner at Walmart and use it every morning. It's supposed to protect as well as clean, and I've noticed a difference in the amount of smudges everyday.
I use the built in screen protector that came with my otterbox defender. LOVE IT!!!
i got the only matte one they offered in the Verizon store
despite a big ugly gouge at the bottom-left that i could have complained about when the employee put it on it's super awesome
if it takes from the prettiness of the screen, then my eyes are in ruins.
honestly if you've ever applied a slight blur filter to really colorful objects(aka ANIME LIKE), then you'd see it actually does favor
that and, no-1 likes to clean smudges/have their finger get caught when trying to drag across the screen, really annoying, good riddance smudges + glass finger hold
I bought some 3 pack on amazon for $0.69. Seems to work as good as the $10 ones at the store.
I Use ZAGG, Lifetime Guarantee/Warranty. The Only Thing It Costs You For A Replacement Is An Envelope And Stamp. You Can Get One For $24.99 Straight From ZAGG.

+1 To Being Lazy.
I'm on the fence with the whole screen protector thing, too ...
I put a ZAGG on my old HTC HD2 Leo, and had one of the mall kiosk guys put one on my wife's Incredible, but I couldn't get over the change in tactile feel and (what I perceived as) the loss in sharpness.
I dropped my DX2 for the first time last night and thank God it was in a decent case. The phone was unmolested - as was the case (a Yoobao plastic/rubber number that fits over the super extended battery) - but I practically had a coronary. I can only imagine if something had hit the screen on the way down to the concrete ...
Does anyone have personal experience with a screen protector actually protecting the screen from impact? Or do they more or less prevent some of those niggling scratches that inevitably plague the screen over time?

Positive They Only Are Meant For Scratches As There Is Not Strength Or Integrity With A 1/16in Of Clear Flexible Plastic. If It Was Solid Then That Would Put A Whole New Paint Job On Things.

I happened to read the separate thread on ZAGG, which really provided for mixed reviews.
I hate any kind of unnecessary distortion, so I'm a bit reluctant to try another screen protector - especially if the protection provided is minimal.
Someone did mention the Zeinheil Crystal protector, which seems to strike a better balance between scratch protection and clarity preservation. Apparently, these are available in a 3-pack off Amazon for $14.99.
Something to think about, in any case ...

That's Right, I Used ZAGG On My OG And I Dropped It Screen Down On The Pavement And Nothing Got Broken Or Scratched. Only Reason I Have It Now On My X2. Also I Have Never Encountered Any Distortion To Screen Color. No Matter What You Decide It's Cool. I Really Like The Lifetime Guarantee That It Came With. Shoot Me A PM Or Post Here On What You Decide And What You Notice Pros/Cons.
Screen protectors do protect from falls to a certain extent. I'm sure if it feel over 10ft and landed on the screen or a pointy piece of something it would crack.
One time I was running in Home Depot (lol) and my phone flew out of my pocket. It hit the floor and then, I unknowingly kicked it another 10 or so feet. It was screen down the whole time and had not a single scratch. I had one of those cheap Verizon ones on too.
Another time I was skateboarding..my phone fell out of my pocket and landed facedown. Thankfully I bailed in midair, so my board just missed it, but my heel did hit it. Luckily, I'm a hurdler, parkourist, and skateboarder so I landed mostly on my toes but I did lean back onto my heels and my screen was fine. That was without a protector.
Earlier this year, I think I threw my bookbag, and my keys scraped against my Droid's screen, it has a small shallow gash now. My phone was naked..no case no protector.

If you're worried about it, drop the $5 on a screen protector. Couldn't hurt...
For the time i spent without a screen protector on mine i did not scratch at all. I'd stick it in my jeans with other stuff, and not a scratch. BUT, some how for some reason my brother in law ALWAYS finds a way to scratch his screen, in the first couple of days he had his thunderbolt he got a long 3 1/2" scratch on it. Same thing happend on his rezound, and when he returned the rezound and got a razr he also managed to scratch it within the first week.
If you take care of your devices you should have not problem, I dont think he takes care of his very well because he always seems to scratch his phone, its insane, my 4 year old vouge is still flawless.

Never used a screen protector on mine and dont have any scratches. In and out of jean pocket all the time. Sometimes, by accident, find a pair of plyers in the same pocket. Dropped it many times, with tpu case and still no scratches. Who needs them!
Coming from a Bionic, with the Gorilla Glass screen, I would say it scratches relatively easily. I have a couple little nicks on my screen, just recently picked up a Halo protector and I'm pretty happy with it. YMMV.
oddly, i've "accidentally" dropped this phone at least a dozen times now(luckily with a case on) and don't have any scratches on the screen(no screen protector on it either).
i personally hate screen protectors. i don't care if they're cheapie ones or fancy invisible shields/ghost armors. i've tried them all before and don't like the look/feel of any of them.
Strange, I can't stand the phone without a screen protector. Too many fingerprints for me.... Also, the Verizon rep who I talked to when I went to get buy my phone had a rezound horribly covered in scratches. (to be fair, I saw her toss the phone into her purse so I'm sure a more careful user won't have quite as severe scratches.)

I would agree that coming from a Bionic, it "scratches" easily. But the scratches are only noticeable when held at certain angles in direct sunlight... In direct sunlight the damn thing isnt usable in direct sunlight anyway so not a big deal.
Got mine replaced after 3 weeks because of a small "pit" in the middle of the screen and a small scratch on the left side of the screen. Never had a screen protector on my Dinc and only got one scratch after a year and a half (sand at the beach).
Since the Rezound doesn't have Gorilla (it's only fault in my book) I use a screen protector and change it out every few months.
No scratches and mines naked I feel it scratches less than the dinc... My dinc had scratches

This is one thing I really had to give the bionic, that screen is truly resilient. I beat the piss out of that phone it the glass held up fine. The Tbolt on the other hand, not so much. I accidentally threw my keys in my pocket with my phone one day and it scratched the crap out of it.
I know it nothing scientific, but I do believe the bionic screen is tougher.
i never used screen protectors on my incredible, and that screen NEVER scratched.
i didn't use protector on my rezound for 2 months, and i got tiny hairline scratches everywhere, JUST from being in my pocket.
so yeah, the quality of this glass isn't as good as the inc
The Rezound is by far the easiest scratching phone I've owned. I came from previous phones with Gorilla Glass and never got one scratch on them. I always put my phone in a pocket by itself without coins/keys/etc. I lay it screen up on tables so that there is no risk of laying it on a pebble or something. I have a few pretty big scratches on the Rezound when I've owned other phones longer without the slightest mark.
The Rezound screen is VERY VERY easy to scratch. Its also easy to chip. My first one was dropped directly on its face from a short distance (like 6"!!!) onto the pavement, and there must have been a tiny little rock because it put a small little pit and some deep scratches into the glass.
I do not like screen protectors either, but I also want my phone to look new in a year. So I will deal with a screen protector on my new Rezound, cause as annoying as they are, its much nicer than looking at scrapes and scratches. Especially with such a nice screen behind it.
Agree. Keys scratch the Rezound screen pretty easily.
LOL, I just ordered my screen protectors today. I've gone over a week without any problems. As soon as I ordered, I now have two small scratches.
Yep, got mine two days after release and before I could get the invisible shield ordered and put on I had a couple little scratches on it. I'm super anal about my phone too. Never ran a protector on the Incredible, but the Rezound DEFINITELY has to have one.

Anybody use the Zagg on a scratched screen?

I've found that overall the wet application screen protectors seem to work much better for the purpose of hiding imperfections than the dry application protectors. I personally use Zagg and install a lot of them for friends and family. They tend to make the scratches or swirl marks either not show at all or barely noticeable. I think part of it has to do with the light not reflecting off of the scratch like when it's exposed. I've only done the regular invisishield and clear screen protectors, never tried a matte finish anti glare screen protector and looked once it was dry to check for blemishes or imperfections that were visible before applying the screen protector.
*edit*
nevermind i'm retarded, and i read the OP wrong.
Check out Best Skins Ever.
i used to use zagg's but didn't care for the feel. ended up having to replace one twice when i had the thunderbolt. the other issue is depending on what case you use, it will cause the protector to peel up a bit on the edges.
i found the ghost armor screen protectors have a better feel & don't peel up as easily.
I use Skinobi.
Zero problems, zero complaints, and all of the minor scratches from my daughter are "gone" so to speak.

I can recommend xoskins. http://xoskins.com/htc-rezound-screen-protector
Fills small scratches, and not the same 'orange peel' effect as Zagg. It's also less tacky than other wet app protectors I've used. One key when installing is not to scrape to hard with the squeegee. This results in a smoother finish.

While I agree with your assessment of the Realook protector, I'm not sure that it would be a preferred application for an already scratched screen seeing as it's hard coated and "dry" application.
The screen-side of the Realook protector does have a somewhat softer adhesive, so it may work to help hide minor surface scratches.
Anyone with experience using these types of hard coated protectors over previously scratched/damaged glass?
Brian
I scratched my screen the day I got it, guess I wasn't safe enough and coming from two phones that had gorilla glass I never thought about it. Anyways I have a Realook Screen protector and I love it. Can't tell its there, feel's like glass, and resist scratches etc great. About your question though, I can still see my scratch clear as day It might be a little less noticeable but as soon as light hits the screen it shows its ugly face.

This one is not so little. I'm going to blame it on the cat.
But yeah I've said the same thing, There's got to be a way to minimize it at least.
The smartest idea I've read is to use something called "jewelers rouge" to buff it out. I'm still contemplating it.
And then if it doesn't work I'm going to smash the phone so I can get a new one cuz I have insurance. lol
I'm sooo damn careful with my phones it's sad and then this happens. Grrr.

Are you familiar a little with buffing agents and polishes and things on metal and glass or jewelry? I was just wondering if you've used some before.
I'm thinking that with the right equipment it could work, I'm going to do some research and see what I find out, but at best it would be a gamble however we could use some old phones to practice and experiment on.
Now that I'm over the rush from shorting the main board I'm losing the one percenter BAMF feeling since so many people are doing it, so taking a "cutting and abrasive" solution to a crystral clear smooth glass sounds like fun

I like your thinking. Let me know what you find out. I don't have any junk phones to be practicing on. I do have a Dremel, and was wondering if using the polishing buff wheel with something would work. I did find one good tutorial...but he did the WHOLE phone. And it was really scratched. Mines just a 1/2 inch scratch but it's right on the top right corner where I always look at the time.
BRAND NEW PHONE. NONE of my other phones or tablets have ever been scratched. SOOO irritating.
I was kind of surprised to see no one answer you guys yet, so I searched and found it for you.

the post in quotes was posted on our forum a while back, it explains how to get rid of scratches on the rezound screen since our screens are the same composition as gorilla glass, just not actual corning gorilla glass.

the post in quotes was posted on our forum a while back, it explains how to get rid of scratches on the rezound screen since our screens are the same composition as gorilla glass, just not actual corning gorilla glass.

I have read that and actually was going to see if a friend of mine who does car body work had some of this laying around. However I see the comments on the dulling of the oleophobic coating? I think having a dull phone would be worse than having the scratch. But the original OP didn't mention that issue at all. Any thoughts?

Any scratches on the screen anyone?

i know this phone has gorilla glass 2. But i read a few story of people getting scratches like nothing. Would like to know if anyone here is getting scratches and how
Not me but I use a screen protector. Best $10 I ever spent on my phone! Well any phone for that matter.
Yep I have scratches. Not quite sure how it happened. Thinking it was when I had it in my pocket one day.

I just picked some up from ATT until my Otterbox case comes in. I think it was a "Moshi" or something like that. I got it heavily discounted from the corp store. And to be honest its a pretty nice screen protector so far! Easy to apply and take off to clean.
What about you? I hear good things about SGP. Easy on the wallet and great quality.
I haven't received my gs3 yet but I have had the Droid since the day it came out and I keep it in my pocket with my keys and everything. It has very small scratches but nothing that you can see with the screen on.
I can't imagine the GS3 being any less scratch resistant.
No scratches at all. Always put it in my pocket and no screen protector. Had my SGS2 for 8 months without getting any scratches on the screen without a screen protector.
I got a pretty deep scratch right in the middle of mine... I think from a piece of sand or grit or something. I dropped the phone from like 2 feet, it slid off the couch onto the hardwood floor before I got my case and screen protector I was pretty upset, especially after seeing these videos of people going at it with knives and screwdrivers and whatnot with zero damage. Had my nexus one for like 2.5 years no scratches on the glass...
I keep mine in my pocket all day no scratches yet. Don't like screen protectors they make the screen look crappy

No scratches here, either. My previous phone was a Moto Photon (first gen Gorilla Glass). No scratches after a year of pocket carry.
I never use cases or screen protectors. I like the naked feel of a phone.
Yah I got a scratch already. My bad. Only notice it when the screen is off. No worries.

I have a couple of little micro scratches that can only be seen if the light hits the screen at the right angle. No big deal at all. I hate screen protectors.
Yup, went in at about 10 am today, finally left around 10:45 with my new phone and it had light small hairline scratches on the side of the phone. I hadn't even touched it other than to login and download a few apps. My hands were clean and I didn't put it in my pocket, as I walked outside I noticed the scratches because of the daylight glaring on it.
I took it back and they exchanged it for me.
I am on the no screen protector and no scratches bandwagon.
Release day gs3.
Also release day gs2 that didn't every have a screen protector and no scratches.
And I do not baby the phone.
I don't baby my phone either but managed to get a scratch on the very first day. All I can remember doing was holding several phones together walking in from my truck and it got a scratch from some sand on the back of one case that was up against the S3 screen. Way too easy if you ask me. I took my original Zagg off of my nexus and put it on the S3. Can't see it now though.

I got it on release day for sprint, about 2 days ago my girlfriend borrowed it quickly to make a call while I had it out playing with it, she handed it back and I saw a smudge. Turned out the smudge was a little cluster of 5 light scratches, tiny though.
Earrings are the devil. It's not even like they were diamonds or anything super expensive, just cheap daily wearers.
I was a little bummed immediately (hid it well though to not make her feel bad, lol) but really they are only noticeable if the screen is off and you're trying to look for them. Now it's officially mine
So yeah, guess I should of thought ahead but being that I don't wear earrings it never even occured to me in the moment. Still not going to grab a screen protector, I'm sure with how I abuse my phone in 8 months or so I'll end up having to get an insurance replacement anyway lol.
Nope, had a screen protector on it since day 1
I dont have any scratches. I kept the in-box screen cover for almost a week until Realook started shipping their dry-type protectors. Now I got them and I can recommend to anyone. No change to screen quality and tocuh feel. Had Realook on my Vibrant for 2 years and served well.
