best rss-reader fpr hd2? - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello,
i´m loving the hd2, but the rss hub hangs up very often, so i´m really like to solve this issue by using an differend rss reader.
so the big question is, which is the best rss reader available for the hd2?
many thanks in advance.
best regards
mario

Dear spoogedemon,
I advise you to install Egress... I tried many but liked egress as it is fully configurable...
Here is the link : http://www.garishkernels.net/egress.shtml
Kind Regards...

Spb News is good and finger-friendly.

My favorite is SBSH GoNews Touch.

GoNews is best.

Tried them all and the only one which has never hung with regular use for me is Egress. Manages podcasts well too

SpeeedReader reads google reader...excellent program!

full-feed possible?
I have been using yomomedia and been very happy. it handles podcats, vidcasts etc. And it is free. SBSH GoNews Touch looks similar to yomomedia but it's a paid application.
I have one question. i don't have a data plan so i read the rss feeds offline. sometimes i would like to see the full articles. are there any rss reader that can trick the source into downloading the full feed or downloading the full feed link in addition to the summary so that when i click the link full feed is available?
thank you very much!

Another vote for yomomedia
yomomedia is good - nice modern interface and I love the way you can configure all your feeds (inc video and audio) via a web page on your desktop (where it's much easier to configure) and the mobile version syncs with that. You can also set it to only download audio / video content when you're connected to a pc (etc. - very configurable). The initial feeds it sets you up with are a bit annoying but once you've got them deleted and your own setup it's great.

Thanks for the recommendation on Yomomedia folks, just started to look into sorting out my RSS feeds properly, and really liking YMM (the web service that syncs with the phone is nice, much prefer organising that on my PC!). As you say, shame about the pre-loaded feeds, but once deleted its excellent.

Speeed Reader asks for my google reader account credentials. I type em in like I do in my PC webbrowser but it says I can't login?

I love RSS Hub and I don't see any reason to change. It came with my HD2 and it works really good.

RSS Hub is freezing itself a lot of time for many people ...
Which version do you use ? How many feeds you have ?

due to this, i´m lokking for an alternative solution.
but rss hub is really nice indeed.
i like the keyword-option a lot.
my content:
47 feeds
4 of it getting a podcast update (last 10) everytime i connect to the pc.
it would be really nice, to get it working without the known issues.

Yomomedia is really a great application !
I advice you to try it !

SmartRSS TouchGR
Really finger friendly and quick integration with google reader (i read over 100 channels and about 1000 dialy posts) with realli fast response times
BeetzStream SmartRSS TouchGR
Best money used with HD2, really impressive.

Essential apps

Had my Streak since Monday after finally deciding against the HD2. I've been a winmo user for years but didn't like the idea of being stuck with 6.5 for another 18 months.
I had built up a huge selection of fave apps for my HD and was reluctant to let some of them go, so I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread for everyone's essential apps for the Streak.
Having only had the "phone!" for a few days, here's a couple of apps i'm liking so far:
1. RockPlayer - play avi files and more.
2. Google Navigation - although comes shipped in UK.
3. MyPlayer - BBC iPlayer.
4. AppKiller - although this is the only task manager i have tried so far.
5. EsFileExplorer - again the only one tried so far.
6. XDA app - nice interface and faster than using the browser.
7. ColourUp - i love editing photos and this is pretty cool.
8. Google SkyMap - works brilliantly.
9. Swype - only just started using this, for me it's brilliant.
Ok, there's my keepers for now, how about yours? I've not really found any great games that fit will on the screen yet although i'm liking Winds Of Steel.
Same as yours really, but would like to add Astro file explorer - great for installing apps outside market. And if you like reading as much as i do Laputa is a awesome ebook reader with ipad style bookshelf and page turning and loads of online books.
Tried quite a few games and at the mo playing Zenonia little rpg ala zelda which is a nice enough. Game Boid is a great emulator for all those classics. Mazeoid is a free pac man game runs great on the streak.
Im experimenting with different keyboards, the dell one works great but the numpad throws off the whole symmetry. Ive tried smart keyboard which is quite nice with lots of skins, but i found it slow so went back. Any suggestions would be very welcome...
Gonna add a new one as of yesterday....kindle reader.
just bought a couple of books and woopee for some reason you can buy them at american prices. Lot cheaper than the UK store/mobipocket etc.
Oh yeah and Rockplayer...rocks...will probably be my first 'purchased' app once it get's released (I've not had a need for anything else that requires paying for yet.)
oops. forgot I don't play many games but Bonsai Blast is really addictive and fits the screen great.

Great, was looking for a decent ebook reader for the ebooks i already have, I also think the numeric keypad is a dumb thing - not thought about as it forces you to hold the streak lob-sided to type, as you, still looking for a decent alternative.

Yep, kindle reader looks lovely, but can't get it to work with the ebooks i "bought" from other sources. Will give the bonsai blast a try. Cheers.

Nice find, buy them cheap while you can
Gave Bonsai Blast a go and i agree looks great and a pretty fun and adictive thanks.
Kindle looks good but like Guest69 i have a collection of ebooks i need to be able to import, maybe this will be possible later...
Also found a few good widgets. Htc smooth calendar (other one was buggy) looks great, matching the dell theme better then the default and shows 3 appointments. VolumeWidget is on my home screen, gives you 3 buttons for preset volume profiles.
Finally the Zedge app is like the app store of ringtones, has search, preview and install functions. Theres also a wallpaper section, but i havent tried it as i have made my own seamless sets like the o2 wallpapers (cut up and resized some high res dual monitor wallpapers) ill post some here when i get a minute.
My favorite book reader is aldiko, and it has limited support for importing books as well as long as they are epub format.
Hi all,
Well I've had my Streak now for a little over 3 weeks and have now flashed my first custom Rom which comes Rooted and with Superuser permissions plus has allowed me to remove from the Rom the apps i had no need for.
So here are my installed apps in no particular order.
Astro File Manager: can be used to install apps that come as apk's as opposed to from the market
Barcode Scanner: easy way to install apps form QR codes or just reading Bar codes
3G Watchdog: Monitors your data use over 3G you can set your allowance and it will monitor and alert you
Live Calender: Will bring up upcoming Appointments on your Home screen
F1 Pocket 2010: all you need to stay up to date with F1
Moto GP Pocket 2010: all you need to stay up to date with Moto GP
iSyncr for PC: Easy transfer and sync of iTunes to your Streak
Google Sky Map: Map of the Stars and Planets
Engadget: Widget with scrolling updates
SystemPanelLite Task Manager:Shows you CPU and Memory use
myPlayer: BBC iPlayer
ShootMe: Screen Shots for Rooted devices
Speedtest.net Speed Test
Rock Player: Plays DivX Avi and many other formats in great quality.
Co Pilot Live: Sat Nav with POI'S and Speed Cameras
Gentle Alarm: Great Multiple Alarm app with some unique nice features
Seven Push E-Mail: Real time Push E-Mail with full folder support
Cloud List:Great: shopping or other list app also on line lists that can be shared with others
Tapatalk Pro: handy tool for posting on Forums
TVCatchup Mobile Live TV Streaming with lots of UK channels
Fring: Skype and IM chat app includes Skype Video chat
Superuser Permissions: allows rooted apps permission
Boot Explorer: File explorer and more for Rooted devices
Root Booter: Easy Normal, Recovery or Bootloader Reboot options
Boot Manager: Control over various options and apps on your device
Swype: simply the best keyboard and typing experience ever IMHO
I should mention although System Panel Lite is a task manager that's not what I'm using it for as it also shows CPU and Memory use along with all your Active applications and Inactive cached applications. Personally I'm just not using a task killer or killing any apps at all.
Wow having now made this list i can't believe just how many apps i have installed so far just as well the Streak comes with 2GB for installing them on.
Marc
is there a good Weather app out there
Is there an android application for windows live mail? I haven't found one.
Diane
Sent from my Dell Streak using the XDA application.
@ Dogman, Mate whats the name of the Barcode reader you use thanks
Hi lufc
It's called Barcode Scanner and it works better then any I've ever used before literally as soon as you frame the QR code it identifies it and gives gives you the option to open the browser which actually opens the download store with the app ready to just hit for download. It still amazes me very time i use it to download a new app just how fast and simple it makes the whole procedure.

Fring - pity it doesn't support Fbchat yet, but it was a shock to have a video call from one of my aussie mates yesterday
phonebook 2.0 - so much better than the stock contacts for making phone calls.
fancy widget - (sense style clock and weather)
dolphin browser - can't decide which I prefer this or stock browser
opera mini 5 - for when I'm on gprs as it's faster there.
wifinder- neat little app
barcode scanner
osmtracker- useful for updating openstreetmap or gps logging
Vespucci - for ondevice osm editing
sportypal - used it in winmo, not as good as runsat though, maybe hollywoof will write an android runsat app one day.
floating image - ultra cool way of showing pictures
layar - more for showing off
laputa
Mytracks - works with runsaturday.com (via email)
Imeasy -fbchat
myplayer
panoramio-to use teh photo service
pkt auctions ebay
seesmic-much better twitter, crap widget though
tapatalk pro
slideit - great once you get past the stupid crashing installer
root explorer
goggles
bonsai blast
and a couple of spongebob games for my kids
My FAVORITE app is Swype. A month ago they were letting people download the app again and I got it for my Nexus One .. I loved it because for some reason I was having a horrible time typing .. When I first got my Streak I typed on it for about 15 minutes and then downloaded Swype again and that is ALL I ever use. I made it the default program for any text and you can always type letter by letter if you are having problems with a certain word. On YouTube there are several GREAT instructional videos on swyping from the maker. I am pretty sure I am getting faster swyping than I was typing on my iphone.
Double post...
Thanks for the barcode scanner tip Marc, its real fast and accurate definitely a keeper.
ROFL @ "XDA_devs is rapidly becoming the McDs of the winmo world, sadly full of rude chavs demanding crap immediately.. "
As for swype, I gave it a try but I wasnt impressed, guess its a preference thing but I can type fast as hell in landscape with a normal kb so long as it can keep up. I found with swype it takes much more finger movement to type each word and you have to look at what you are doing more, not to mention smearing crap all over the screen...
Im still searching for a good alternative to dells stock kb, tried everything in the market with mixed results, but I think I'll just wait till the froyo update and try the ported htc multitouch kb.
@Cypher84
If you mess around with the settings for Swype you can change how long the trace shows for and the same for word prediction i have reduced the time for both which i have found has made the world of difference. Also now Swype has learnt most of my most commonly typed words I'm finding it incredibly fast and accurate and also it's quite forgiving if your not totally accurate. Also for the suggested word to be put in you just start the next word so now after just a short while using Swype it defiantly is my by far preferred method of text input. But like anything just because it's best for me doesn't mean it has to be for everyone else.

I had the same problem but you just need to do this
After you have installed and enabled swype
Open a text input box (what I do is open up the browser, go to google and then hold my finger down in the google search box)
Hold your finger down in this box until a menu appears "Input method"
select Input Method and then it should give you an option of Swype or Android Keyboard, select swype and now it will use that as default
Hope this helps
Cheers

Must Have Apps for WinMo

Hey,
I am creating this post because wherever I go, people have this misconception that the WinMo doesn't have apps, its not user friendly etc etc. From what I have seen in the forums ( hear hear ), I have found out that its one of the most customizable OS's out there. People say that Android has more apps, well you are not going to use all those right ? Blackberry has push blah blah. I will discuss the apps which are cutting all these platforms one by one ! These are the most essential ones, and i believe that these will be more than enough. Please add whatever you feel necessary.
Recently bought an HTC HD Mini phone. ( This is my first Smartphone btw ). After going through a lot of apps, apparently most of them are for VGA/QVGA screens.
Messaging
What Blackberry, Apple and Android promote is the concept of messaging. They have 1000's of apps for chatting etc. Palringo is one of the best messaging clients available there. Instead of downloading separate chat clients for all separate chats (like bb), better to download Palringo. You will say similar apps are there for bb n stuff, but thats the point right ? This post is for all those bb,android snobs u must have met after buying an HD Mini or HD2
Push Email
Oh, aren't those BB people charging that much money just for enterprise push email ?? And haven't you spent a fortune looking for a perfect push email solution ?? And most of winmo phones provide one sync accounts. Is this your problem ?? Well Emoze Pro which btw is free, lets you push-manage n-number of email accounts ( in my case, n=5) and its real time push. You can add n office accounts also, with OWA ( Outlook Web Access ) and Google Apps. Isn't it amazing ? The BB just got a kick in the nuts .
Interface
Well, now that we have beaten the #%$ out of the bb people with those 2 nifty apps , lets take a go at the android people. And this will be useful for those who have used sense ( there are mods for getting sense on your older phones but not sure) or some other awesome interface. Sense in my opinion is byfar the best interface available ( on my HD Mini atleast n same in HD2 with liveweather ), but if you get bored of it then obviously you have got SPB Mobile Shell.. You have to use it to experience it and I am sure you agree And how can you forget the beautiful S2P player and S2U2 utility with their beautiful sync and caller ID !! Must haves !!
Other Useful apps include :
FIM ( Facebook Instant Messenger )
Shazam
IM Plus
Premier League Pocket 10
Coreplayer
Please update more apps for the devices. I know these apps are more than enough for me ! But if you can post more I will add them !
GO WINMO !
Well, here is my list:
-G Quickswitch, it changes automatically your profiles when you need it, very useful for me coz i change between normal and vibration all day
-Memmaid for improove the performance of your phone
-Vito eye photo
-Garmin mobile xt, it saved my life!
-MySquare, which i found in this forum and it's a nice app
-Vito sms chat, i hate WM sms interface and couldn't change it with astronout method so i downloaded this program and it works fine.
and the best games:
-groovy jump
-resco bubbles
It's a troll topic
Is there no must have, only what you think it's usefull for your use
I absolutely need these on my Xperia x1i:
ROM: WM 6.5 826x ROM (http://826x.blogspot.com/2010/02/rom-826x-wm-655-build-23541-w-htc-sense.html)
SPB Mobile shell (not free, but absolutely amazing)
A_C's S2U2 and S2P (http://www.ac-s2.com/)
Resco Explorer 2008(not free either but after using it, normal file explorer seems
TomTom 7 Navigator GPS (Garmin's good too but I prefer TomTom)
SPB Keyboard isn't exactly a must as the Xperia has a full QWERTY keyboard but there's no onscreen keyboard that comes close IMHO
keep this topic up ....
I am Newbie ... just start collecting apps and games ...
SPB Mobile Shell rocks !!!
SPB Weather (pay) - like it very much .... nice graphic
SPB Time (pay) - very good and different kind of alarms and world time
SPB Radio (pay) - a lot of radiostations ...
SPB TV (free) - also a lot of TV Channels accessible over WiFi connection with impressive good quality
SPB Games - all their games have very good graphic
SPB Home Page
Alreader - only ebookreader I need.
-No one mentioned Opera Mobile 10 and mini? Add then.
-Microsoft MyPhone for handy phone backup and anti-theft solution
-ppcpimbackup, good for backing up phone contacts, sms etc.
-msm7kcpuspeed- push CPU over limit
For me, the below are a must after every fresh flash:
ACR 1.2.4 (Automatic Call Recorder).
AppTpDate.
CleanRAM.
CorePlayer.
FingerKeyboard2.1.
IMDB Mobile.
JWMDIconChanger.
LyricsFinder 2.0.
Minesweeper 1.5.1.2.
MMTaskManager.
Mp3TagEditor_v2.0.
mVu_0.7.9.
Opera 10 Final.
PIMBackup (Cooked-in, but pretty damn essential though).
RescoExplorer2010.
ScreenOff_v1.0.
Shazam.
SRS WOWHD v1.5.1.0.
XDA Market.
Zooomer.
Most of them are in my signature.

[Q] Switching back to WinMo from Android

Hi!
I'm thinking about switching back from Android to WinMo 6.5 because in my opinion Sense + CHT2 is superior to any other homescreen and I miss it a lot. But I am not sure because there are a lot of things I think I'll miss. First of all the stability of Android. I have never had problems with things crashing or the need to restart the phone. Also I like that everything works good for me out of the box. Well, and here are my questions regarding WinMo:
- Is there a browser which works as good and fast as the stock android browser? For me it is important that I can view all web pages as they would be displayed on my computer (no mobile pages and such crap). Also flash support would be awesome.
- Does syncing gmail via ActiveSync support push mail and multiple gmail accounts?
- Is there a free alternative to the provided rss app?
The most important things for me are:
- stable system
- very good and fast browsing experience (with working flash)
- sync contacts and calendar with gmail (which syncs also with evolution on my pc)
I think I'm going to miss the facebook app from android because the WinMo one is really crap but I can live with that, I'm not a heavy fb user.
Thanks a lot in advance!

Ive always found Opera 9.7 to be better than any of the android browsers... except maybe Dolphin..
I can give you a cab to get rid of the default user agent and prevent it displaying sites in mobile view if you want. Unfortuneately flash support is not possible, there is a flash compatible browser called Uzard but its pretty buggy. I guess you could install it and just use when you need flash...
Not sure about syncing your contacts and calendar with gmail as I have never bothered but I have seen something around here about it.
CHT2.0 contains an RSS widget which links in with the stock RSS reader, Im not a heavy RSS user so I dont really know how it compares with the android equivalent but its fine for me.
As for a stable system........ cooked ROMS are the way to go.
Energy, Artemis, Duttys and Elegancia are all popular choices...
Ive just switched from Energy to Elegancia and its incredibly smooth and stable.
Remember, you can always keep an android build on your SD card and have the best of both worlds.
Hope that helps in some way.....

Yes, Opera 9.7 is a very good browser. Although on some websites it did not display everything correctly.
Well, flash is not a killer criteria but would be nice. You may not need it for months but when you need it one time and you can't...
RSS is important for me as I enjoy reading the news on my phone. I also use twitter a lot for news, so I love the twitter tab in sense
I used energy before switching to android and all at all I was pretty satisfied with it (although the dialer looks awful IMHO ). But sometimes you see WinMo behind the sense-curtain and some things lag or even crash and that is something I do not have with Android. Well, I think I'm gonna give it a try (I have a CWR backup for the worst case) and use parallel some SD builds of android.
Sharing that cab would be awesome! Thanks a lot! I know otherwise you have to do some registry tweaks...
Heres that cab for the user agent.
Also, if your a heavy twitter user you might want to try moTweets. Theres a free ad supported version, contains a few more features than the twitter tab.

Mantano Reader: epub + pdf

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mantano.reader.android.trial
I've been following development of this reader over at mobileread for a while, and finally had occasion to grab the trial: very impressive. It is at least the equal of Aldiko on epubs, with better pdf support (for my purposes, anyway--I'm not annotating or anything) than ezPDF, and a very polished UI.
It's not cheap, but finally having an app that renders pdfs readable, and being able to retire 2-3 other reading apps in the bargain, makes it well worth it to me. The level of engagement from the devs also bodes well for the app's future.
I also tried the trial of Mantano and love this app! Finally found an app that doesn't hang when reading my pdf manuals, etc. As mentioned above, great interface and well worth the price to do what it does.
What does this $7.49 app have that Adobe Reader/Cool Reader doesn't?
Or it's just 2-in-1 convenience package?

Adobe reader doesn't remember your place in the document but has great viewing options. Coolreader doesn't support adobe drm so no library support. Aldiko has lots of nice little touches but sucked with pdfs... mantano addresses essentially all of these issues and others. So my opinion its a worthwhile "2-in-1" convenience.
I still prefer ezpdf. Mantano has poor image scaling.
FYI, the current update is apparently causing FCs on the NC,so you may want to freeze updates until they fix it.
Nice app.. imo, better than Moon Reader etc for epubs!
I've tried near every ebook reader app in the market but I've decided to bought Mantano because is by far the best and stable of all!!
I'm very happy about it and I feel that only a proper widget is missing so I've sent an email to them and they answered me in 10 mins!!
here the answer:

Hi Dimitri,
Thank you very much for your kind comment!
Currently you can add a shortcut to a book on your home page, but we'll add a widget someday. Before this, our next big improvements will be the support of teh OPDS catalog format, which will allow you to browse a lot of book catalogs available on the web, and the the synchronization between devices and annotations sharing. But the widget is also on our TODO-list.
Thank you again, and have pleasure with our app !
Best regards,
Jean-Marie

you might try reinstalling or clearing app data. i'm not getting any fcs with it. still waiting to be able to link to my library through this thing. hopefully that's what they mean by OPDS catalog support...

All the problems I've seen so far are from people who paid for the app. I'm still on trial, but disabled auto updates just in case.

hmm. i'm already on the paid version. perhaps i'm just unusually lucky. are you seeing people complain at mobilereads or elsewhere?
OT: BTW, in nanowrimo under 'skwalas' if you do jump in.
I just caught up on the MR @MR thread, and it looks like they already released a fix that solved people's problems.
After a few short days using the Mantano, I have to say it is better than the Adobe Reader, at least having the "remember last opened" feature.
ePub supporting was just ok, nothing fancy.
Thumb up anyway and thanks to those members who introduced the tool.
I can't open my downloaded BN ebooks with Mantano. It asks for name and password, but won't accept them. Ideas are welcomed. Thanks.

I believe your "username and password" for B&N's DRM is the name on the credit card associated with your account and the credit card number, respectively.

I'm coming from Android, a Samsung Vibrant, and I know WP7 needs some work and more apps. I love it though, it's really cool and it has a fast UI. I need help, and I'm sure a lot of you do too, finding good apps.

6. Netflix
7. Number Guru - tells me who called, and if it's spam.
8. Thumbs Photo Editor - really awesome photo editor
9. theChive - keep calm, Chive on
10. Wiztiles - custom tiles with cool customizable shortcuts

It answers most of my questions. The only bad thing about it is slowness.. It takes a while to reply.. Wasn't it free? just try it!

I think these are only available to Nokia Phones. Hopefully, they make them available to all WP7 phones, because they're really awesome.
Why does everyone want Nokia Drive?!!!!!!
I think Bing Maps is awesome.. what is it missing?
I use WPCentral & WMPoweruser a lot. Also mehdoh for twitter. Other than that I use a lot of photo apps & Xbox live games, especially Splinter Cell. Also use the people hub for most of my Facebook & some twitter. Though I guess the people hub is baked in & not necessarily an app .
