Phone contacts to google account?

Hi
I got my hero last week and i'm loving it at the moment. I want to back up all my contacts to my google account to make them easy to manage and for back up reasons. For some reason though when the phone syncs it doesn't load my existing contacts(carried onto my hero by sim from my old diamond) into my google contacts?
If I create a new contact on either phone or pc it updates the other accordingly but i just cant get my existing contacts to my google contacts.
I can see the ones that update are labeled as google contacts so i'm guessing i have to label my exisisting ones somehow???
Someone please help as i dont want to have to create all my contacts again
Thanks in advance

Anyone?.........Please!!!!

I've been looking at this too. One of the groups from my phone has synced to Gmail, but no contacts. Still looking....

Ok, there is a piece of software on the market which moves contacts from "Phone" to "Google". I'm just googleing to see what it is as I can't remember.
Not sure how effective it is, haven't tried it as I've always synced my contacts to google even on WinMo.
Actually, have you tried doing it that way 1st? Set your Diamond to have an ActiveSync with google (m.google.com) and use your google user id and password. This will send all the contacts from your phone to google. Then sync your Hero.
I can't find the program at the minute (10 minutes of looking) but I'm sure its in this Hero forum somewhere about it. Will have another look in a bit

Converting from WinMo

Hi All
I currently have a Diamond and am due for an upgrade and am seriously thinking about the Hero.
I've looked around the various forums but can't seem to find the answer to my question. When changing between Win Mo Pro phones I could easily backup contacts, calender, text messages, emails etc using PPCbackup.
Is there a program that will allow a backup from WinMoPro and restore it onto the Andriod system?
I know I can backup the contacts and calender using outlook 2003 and squirt them over the Hero using the HTC Sync program but not sure about anything else? It would be very helpful to have my text messages sent on the Hero as alot of work communication is sent that way.
Help much appreciated
Ed
You send your outlook contacts to your googlemail account. google backs then all up, so as soon as you sign in (say after a wipe) they all come back to the phone as before.
There is also various backup aps as well.
can you not sync ur winmo phone to an exchange server then sync ur android one too.
also theres a app called windows mobile sms migrator. http://android.modaco.com/content/software/288916/windows-mobile-sms-migrator-beta-1/
Well if all your contacts are in Outlook the HTC sync software just simply pulls the contacts from Outlook.

My contacts and calender aren't the issue but thanks for replying, it the SMS messages I'm more concerned about.
I'll upgrade and give the modaco app a try and see how I get on.
It would of course be nice to see migration software that'll squirt everything across in one go that would indeed be a shot across the bow's for windows lol.
Thanks for the replies everyone

Sync Oddness

Ok, got the Hero (after a diamond and trinity) works nice BUT what is with the HTC Sync Thing?
Everytime it connects it udates random conacts from Outlook, so that at the moment the wife has 4 entries and some other numbers are the same yet others are fine.
ANyone else any experience and more importantly how to heck do I stop it?!
ta muchly
What? Really? HTC Sync lets you synchronize Outlook or Windows Address Book contacts on your PC with your Hero.

Just don't use it! there is nothing to say you have to use 'HTC Sync'.
I never use it as I don't want the contacts in Outlook to sync to my Hero. I just use my google contacts for this.
No there is nothing saying I HAVE to use HTC Sync however if I want to put all my contacts across in one easy go then the options seem a little limited.
Fixed it now just told it not to auto sync and that seems to have got control back to me
Glad to hear you got it sorted...
I know there are limited options when 'sync-ing' contacts to your Hero.
I used 'ExportContacts' app in the market to export all my 'old' SIM contacts into a csv file. I then exported my contacts from outlook also to a csv file which can then be imported into your Google account.
All to do then was to 'merge' all of the contacts in my Google account. This then syncs with the phone and I never bothered to use HTC Sync.
Makes sense, I dont use the google address book as I tend to keep the data useage to a minimum mainly as when at work we dont even have a phone signal, so prefer to carry everything "locally" properly, hence the much abused and hated outlook ;0

retriving contacts

hi all i switched from WM based to the eris and LOVE it got it less than a week ago and switched to 2.1 and not having any issues so far but the one problem im having is how can i get my contacts off my WM to sync with my eris so they are on there im running XP and of course i dont have outlook but i do have outlook express any ideas on how i may be able to do this without typing in EVERY contact i have like 200 of em and thats just gon take a while to do and help or advice is appreciated
If you can find a way to export your WM contacts to a CSV file you can import them into your google contacts for use on the Eris (or anything else that supports google contacts).
oh wait... i found this. go for it!

[Q] Outlook - syncing issue with contact numbers

Hi all
I'm tired of searching google atm adn i thought that you all can help me with my problem. My father got new HD2 today and asked me to move all of his contacts from backberry to his new Leo device. I did that syncing everything with Outlook 2010 but there is a catch... If any of the contacts got more than one number then only one nuber will sync between Outlook and device. I can't figure out how to change that. There are no options for this. At least i didn't find any :/ Ohh there is one more thing about that - nearly all additional numbers are marked as "Other".
Ok, none of "Other" phone numbers are synced. Do you know how to change that except manualy update contacts? It's near 1k of them and it will be real pain in the ***
First method that comes to mind is export contacts to .csv open said csv in excel, sort the whole sheet by other column to get all contacts with other set into a block, select all the other numbers and move them into one of the alternates,, mobile2, for example. Save the sheet (choose dos csv, excel sometimes doesn't save csv right by default) reimport the contacts.
if you don't have excel, there are loads of free csv editors.
I'll try it this this evening and post here if this worked or not. Hopefully it will thanks for reply.
Edit:
Thank you very much. Your post helped me a lot now all phone numbers are imported. It was a little bit more tricky than i thiught cause there are more phone numbers than i thought but still, it worked
