[3/19] [1.1.0] Improve your data speeds with the latest Cyanogen/Enomther/Modaco Mod - Nexus One Android Development

I've researched the different possible settings that one can make in the build.prop to enable the proper data throughput of the Nexus One. After playing around with the different setting combinations, the one that I am posting provides the highest consistent data throughput. I don't really take any credit for this, as this build.prop is an amalgamation of other people's work that I have read upon online. You should mainly see the difference if you are on a HSUPA and EDGE network, as the HSDPA default settings were already somewhat maxed out. Any further suggestions would be appreciated.
Version 1.1.0
- cleaned up some stuff
- removed 3G prefix
- any further increase in the radio download speed turned out to be detrimental
Cyanogen Mod: http://www.4shared.com/file/244163071/e4f98dc5/build.html (not required as of 5.0.5 test 3)
Enomther's Mod: http://www.4shared.com/file/244163089/6dba1938/enom110buildprop.html
Modaco's Desire Mod: http://www.4shared.com/file/244163086/fd0504a9/moda110buildprop.html
Modaco's Custom Mod: http://www.4shared.com/file/244576289/ff1156c2/mocu110buildprop.html
Installation Instructions
1. Turn on debugging
2. In your PC shell (Terminal/DOS prompt) enter: adb remount
3. Enter: adb push build.prop /system/
4. Enter: adb shell reboot
To uninstall, simply extract the build.prop from the ROM that you are using and follow the above instructions.
The most objective way to test your speed is to use the Speedtest.net application:

Your network is most likely HSDPA, the speed improvements will mainly be seen with HSUPA and EDGE networks....

Well I pushed the file just a second ago. The first thing I noticed so far is that when I pull down my notification bar it says "3G t-Mobile" instead of "T-Mobile". I'm going to get back later and let you guys know how my phones doing

That can be easily turned off, I'll turn it off in the next version... If you want to do it yourself, just delete this line from the build.prop and push it again:

Hey Undercover, with your reported lightning speeds, why would you consider something loke this?
LOL

Pushed and testing now. Will give this a good "real world" test. I get crap reception in my building, and generally streaming music works awhile then tends to die. Will see how it goes today.

Yes, once again you must be on an HSDPA network. If you try the EDGE speeds, you will see the difference. Likewise with anyone who is on a HSUPA network.

Just installed,
i'll let you know how i get on

Probably worded that poorly. I bounce between edge/3G in my area alot, so I think this may actually help. If this can keep the edge data speeds up a tad it wont hurt thats for sure.
So far so good eitherway

No real change for me (Good 3G and Edge signal in my office). Below are the results.
Before changes (Down/Up)
Code:
Edge:
91/139
102/89
78/108
3G:
497/357
641/355
660/363
After changes (Down/Up)
Code:
Edge:
49/201
119/85
106/96
3G:
508/428
532/391
526/381

this thing won't work for my telco since the subscribers' data speed are capped to around 1mbps only...
even though their network is capable to support 14.4mbps

Rom: Cyano 5.0.4.1
Network: 3 Italy (supposedly both HSDPA/HSUPA)
Average of 3 tests:
Before: 1455kbit/s down, 355kbit/s up
After: 1496kbit/s down, 352kbit/s up
No differences in top speed, but while running the test with Xtremelabs Speedtest, the phone seems to reach higher speeds quicker than before.
What I mean is: after I push the start speedtest button, reported speed is initially very low (100kbit/s) and then climbs steadily until it reaches 14xxkbit/s. Before changing build.prop, it took about 20 seconds to reach max speed. Now it only takes a few seconds (4-5).
Not sure if it's related to build.prop changes, but it seems these settings doesn't hurt so I'll keep it this way

I'm seeing a reproducible difference on Edge outside of Atlanta.
Before:
125/93
75/89
120/95
After:
179/114
179/109
173/62
Tested at various times but at the same poor signal location in my office

Hey guys!
Since all of you here are quite experienced, I'd like you to check out and comment my in-progress work.
I'm writing yet another WiFi discovery tool (like Hitchhiker or WiFi companion).
Today I'm on a very early stage:
Many things are not implemented yet
No autoconnect. Manual mode only
What i've got:
It can turn WiFi on and off
It shows current WiFi status
It shows a list of nearby networks
It connects all types of networks (including WEP, WPA, WPA2, hidden, open, etc.) in manual mode
It is finger friendly
It is on AppToDate
It supports VGA, wide screens, landscape mode, and it looks nice after all
Please give me your feedback (including concerns regarding English grammar used, since I'm Russian)
Thanks!

It definitely looks nice. I'm going to have to try it out.
this program shows wifi dbm level?
very nice, will it autoconnect to open networks and replace windows zero configuration?
Bug: Doesn't switch Wifi off on exit.
Although, nice work
looks awasome m8, cant wait for the release, gl
This app is very cool. Personally though, it would be nice to be able to turn off the vibrate when a button is clicked. Im not saying i dont like it, but having a choice would be ideal. And with what was mentioned earlier, wifi doesnt turn off when exiting the app, Keep up the great work.
Amazing program! Works fine on my LG KS20.
I can't wait to see next version
Will it support connecting to network with ssid broadcast off?
really nice program !
Hope you will continue !

Is it posible to see that for open networks is mac addres used?so it shows ony networks to that YOu can realy conect.
and can the inactyviti be disabled when AC power is used.
and will there be posibilitys to translate YOur prog?
This program looks like it's going to be something major. Love the look and especially the fact that it doesn't have to be installed.
I also agree, on the fact that I think this app is really going to be a must have !!
But I don't agree with you on the install, I would rather prefer it be installed

Normally, I'm just like you, rather have it installed. But I am beyond low on free space right now, so with this not having to be installed, it works perfectly for me.
I'm liking the look of this; will be very helpful when out and about in London.
Renders well on my HD's WVGA screen too.
On the subject of installable or not, my vote would be for installable; means I can run it from the programmes tab in my TF3D v2....

Replace signal bars with db level in notification area

is there such an app?
Ive been looking everywhere for this and cant find it. Seems it would be something already done since many battery apps do the same thing and show a percentage.
The app would need to simply take the info from the status info on the phone and display it instead of signal bars
Was thinking about this the other day as well.
I'd also rather see a db or snr number, instead of bars.
Agree ..
I think its a great idea ...

Are there any widgets that report dB levels of reception? I agree that replacing the signal bars would be best, but as a stop-gap solution a widget would do perfectly well for me.
If rooted, it's an option in CM6, at least in the nightly build since 0715. It doesn't replace the signal bars, it's in addition to them.

Check out "Real Signal" on the market - been using it for a little over a week.
It doesn't replace your bars, but it gives you a 2G and 3G "accurate" bar reading on the left of your notification bar, and by sliding your drawer down it will show you the dB levels for the type of signal.
It's a great little utility.

1200mhz? Is that a hero?
Its not hero , the resolution is to high.
what the.... flykernel runs on other systems? cool - I guess it makes sense that he builds it for other systems but I just never thought about that happening.
I think the screen is just a screen. Kernel from one device won't run on another.

oh, so he grabbed a setcpu screenshot for example's sake?
ok, original poster, are you using a hero? LoL
I'm pretty sure of this
The screenshot is from another device / kernel, he was just using it as an example.
As for best configuration, there isn't one I am afraid. It is dependant on so many differing factors:-
- what apps update in the background and how often?
- how often you use the screen?
- what brightness do you have your screen on?
- how good is your signal?
- how many widgets do you have running?
- how well written the apps you use are (sky news for instance used to be a massive battery drain)
- how efficient your battery is (old batteries drain quicker)
that it is impossible to say. I personally don't use any profiles at all, I run at 19MHz min / 748MHz max and use the smartass governor, but I am so often around my charger (at home or at work) that I don't know what the battery life is like. It lasts more than 24 hours and linpack over 5.2 MFLOPS, which is enough for me.
yea - most common sense way to improve battery life is this:
reduce screen brightness manually as much as you can live with
slow down top speed of cpu as much as you can live with. in most roms I can live with something in the 450 mHz range or whatever that kernel provides as a lowish top end speed.
smartass is good for battery life - nice low bottom speed, very quick to speed up if necessary. but if you can live with some occasional slowdowns on unlock (the only side effect I get from the following setup) just use a low conservative-governor speed with screen off profile and higher but still low as you can live with speed with screen on using the ondemand governor.
oh, and turn off wifi when not using it, turn off bluetooth when not using it, make sure no apps request gps when not using it or turn it off too if you're paranoid (but gps only runs when an app asks it to run), and if you really want great battery life when screen is off then t urn off background updates except when you really want to update your data.
The image is only example

there are apps you can install that do that automatically for you, but of course then you have another service running in the background all the time managing this stuff. I would imagine it's worth a try, but I personally need background updates enabled so my wife can ping me whenever she wants.
Let me just say this.
Look in the FlyKernel topic. He has a darn huge part there on what the best speed is.
And to make it lazy for ya.
172/614 smartass, and totally no profiles.
But it is more what you like.
If you want to go like I want to have a P4 and go to the 2.2 Ghz and try to run XP on it. Have fun
But in short, First read out a whole post of a kernel before making a new topic. next time post it inside the topic of the kernel. Less clutter on the board.
EDIT: I personally dont use setCPU because its another app running for something you can just configure with flykernel package itself. Same for all kernels. Just have to find out how . And now its time to go to bed, that was something I was planning to do 4.5 hours ago
12a is a great kernel..
I find 19/576 (interactive when screen on, conservative when off) works perfectly on froydvillain 1.7.2, but I'm using the included app cpu speed, not setcpu.
I don't have any problems with lag during games or anything else, so why overclock more if not needed? I have gone up to 730 though I didn't find performance was that much better, so I leave it at 576 unless otherwise needed.

Wifi/GPS/BT/Plane on/off keys widget ?

Hi,
is there a widget similar to the one preinstalled on the defy to toggle wifi/gps etc. ?
The white/ coloured ones don't fit my theme.
THX
Widgetsoid is the best toggling app I've come across. It's got a huge number of toggles and options you can customize, including the colors and themes of the toggles, so I think it would be perfect for you.
2G/3G widget
When trying to switch from 2G to 3G or back Widgetsoid only sends you to the operator menu where you have to change the network type
Any other widget that can do the switch on a single click (as all the other widgets work)?

Can I ask a really stupid question? What would you want that for?
The only thing I can think of is if you are often in an area where either the 3G or the 2G data connection is often - but not always - messed up.
And that can't be too often (this actually did happen to me this summer: _some_ evenings my 3G data connection would just die and/or not let me log in. Then it was pretty handy to be able to force phone/dongle to just use 2G).
Or is it just for convenience? Use 2G for calls/standby (save battery, right?), flick on 3G when you want to surf or sync?

If your data connection dies somethimes you should use 2G and 3G at the same time. ( There is optin in data settings: use only 3G or use only 2G, or use both.)
Yes, 3G is a big component like Wi-Fi so it uses your battery a lot. But I use program which turns off all internet connections while screen is off. It saves way of my battery juice. But if you want always sync your programs put there a widget on your homescreen which is shortcut to data setting and when you know that you'r not using your device for next couple hours, just change from 3G to 2G only.
I hope this helped you

Slightly OT (mods please don't hit me, I'm a stoopid noob):
My problems this summer was before I had my lovely shiny Defy, and they were really tricky in that they only affected 3G data, and only sometimes (but regularly enough that I complained, and got a nice reply that they were working on it and that I had identified the problem correctly - no "have you tried this or that" -bull****).

That's a good way to save, but I think 3G (voice-) standby also eats more than 2G standby. At least a friend of mine who is a hopeless chatterbox said that turning off all 3G stuff in her never-used-for-data phone almost doubled her battery life - and it isn't like she is ever in an area with marginal coverage, downtown Helsinki all the time.

It is the signal bars and the data connection that changes. Many roms and themes will lock down the colors of the signal bars so they remain the same.

Your picture looks like it was captured before your wifi fully signed on and before you're data connection shut off which its why both are showing....
Any chance your wifi its scanning?

Sure, here it is.
I am not connected to a wifi hotspot.
Don't forget, I have a cm7 theme manager theme applied, not sure if that affects the systemui.apk.

Nope, I'm not connecting to a hotspot nor does this icon show up for just a few seconds. When it does decide to show up, it stays on for quite a while.

I'm guessing it's an issue with the theme. That icon is shown for a very low wifi signal. The fact that it's appearing means one of two things: 1) You actually have that low of a signal (stat_sys_wifi_signal_0.png is what's shown - at a wifi signal strength of 1 and above, you would see a differentiating color), or 2) a mistake was in the theme with the icons.
*Attached is that icon, pulled from your SystemUI. I know that these aren't being used because of the theme, but no one would purposely use that particular icon for theming various levels of wifi strength.

I know that number one is not the case as this occurs even I'm not connected to anything. I'll switch off the cyanbread theme and see what happens
I'm afraid it is not theme-specific:

That's just weird. I don't even know what's going on. It shouldn't even show an icon when disconnected.
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)
Running Unnamed 2.2.5 with the UCS theme it will be greyed out at time but it can also be blue. I sometimes do get wifi even if it is greyed out.
