How do I delete threaded messages (I have over 6k) - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have had the phone for over 3 months.
I have over 6,000 messages and I've been using Handcent and HTC's default messenger application.
The phone is not rooted and still has the 1.5 standard version of Android, upon manufacturing.
There are 90mb of RAM left.
So the problem:
When I try to delete the messages in the basic application, it freezes up, and shortly later a force close sign appears.
So, what should I do to delete the messages while preventing the freeze up?
P.S.
I hope I posted in the correct thread location.
I should mention that the device spoken about in the post, is not entirely mine, but instead it is a friend's device.

I use an app from the Market called "SMS Quick Delete" and it does as it says

i for one have come to terms with handcent being screwy after each upgrade so i personally, would uninstall that first then try deleting the msgs.
just my 2cents

Thanks you guys.
Thank you for the replies!
Well guys, it turns out, he was just patient and deleted each one manually lol.
Thanks again.

wow that sucks..lol
how long did it take?

Help w/ deleting mass amt of sms

Hi All,
I have an sms thread that's ~5000 texts (sad, I know), and I get a force close every time I try to delete. I've read about clicking "wait" when the force close message appears, and I've done that but it hasn't helped.
I've also searched through XDA and found a post in a Hero G2 Touch forum (I can't post a link because I'm new). There was a code posted to put in the command prompt, but it's not working for me. Here's the code:
mkdir c:\temp
adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db c:\temp (this will backup the database to your computer at c:\temp, just in case)
adb remount
adb shell
rm /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db
reboot
Can anyone please help?
Thank you!

Just read that it is the one thread that is over 5000. Thats a lot ridiculous, i dont think a lot of the people on here have ever tried to delete that many text from an eris. I honestly have no idea aside from backing up your stuff and factory resetting it.
Dang. I didn't realize Eris couldn't store the texts... I guess I'm just going to delete a few when I get time each day because I don't want to take a chance and screw it up by resetting it. It's a work phone...

it can store the texts just 5,000 in one thread is a little excessive and i think you could agree
there is an app on the market called sms delete or something, just search for it, it cleans up old sms's based on how old they are. takes a while, but it works.

I have. Mainly because I've got a girlfriend that I don't see every day, a boring job, and I'm used to not having to delete texts (since I had an iPhone for so many years).
SMS quick delete and all variants DO NOT GET RID OF THE PROBLEM. Those programs will force close just like handcent, chomp, and the stock messaging apps will. Do a factory reset, and just delete your threads before they get too far over 100 texts. Yeah, its a pain in the ass, but I can tell you that my Eris runs SO much smoother without a 5000 thread of texts sitting around...
and as far as the Eris and holding texts goes, it starts getting buggy with 150+ in a single thread. something about the Eris not allocating memory properly or something, and just completely ****ting the bed. or at least thats what I gathered from googling the problem.
Yes, I agree 5000+ is a little excessive, but similar to bill d's situation, I have a boyfriend who's 2000 mi away right now in a place with sketch service, so we text more than we talk on the phone.
I found a program "SMS cleaner free" (I can't pay for any apps b/c this is a work-issued phone) that doesn't work completely (it still FCs here and there), but has come the closest to being better than deleting each text one-by-one or compeltely resetting my phone. But, sms cleaner allows for me to delete texts with certain words in them so I search for mildly common words like "we", "me", etc which come back with ~400-800 entries and delete those groups. I'm down to 3600 texts now.
I'll get there eventually. Thanks for the help guys.

CAUTION: Launching Android from SD from WM might loose Emails/SMS messages

I use a pretty cool windows mobile app called Note2Self - it records a quick thought, then emails it to you so it will be in your inbox. One problem is that if it is set to email right away, the app will pause for a good minute while it connects to your SMTP server and send the email. So, this was a pain if you wanted to make multiple recordings one right after another. The solution is to have the app instead place the email in the "outbox" of activesync. This way the emails are stored right away (without sending them until you dock with your PC).
But, I just found out that if there are any emails in activesync's "outbox" and then I run Clrcd/Haret.exe to launch Android. Then reboot back into Windows mobile - ALL of the email in the AS outbox are gone!
I also discovered that any recently received or sent SMS/Text messages your had before the boot into Android will also me missing when you reboot back into windows mobile.
It seems the CEmail.vol file is "forgetting" these messages when android is run.
Anybody have a fix for this?

Since this issue is only applicable to "SD Development" (and not applicable to "NAND" or "Themes"), that is why I thought this would be the appropriate spot.

I am using NRGz28 Energy ROm 6/1/2011:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=591784
I seems that the lost often happens with an emails in Outlook's (ActiveSync's) "Outbox" and any Text messages in the SMS/MMS "inbox". If any messages are in there, then booting into Android using clr/haret then rebooting back into WM6 will loose those messages
Hi,
i experienced the same problem often when i started (SD-)Android from my WinMo stock rom. Later, when i reboot into WinMo i can see, that it losts the last mails and SMS.
I made some tests and my solution is simple: When you want to start Android, shut down your WinMo and start it again and then start Android! (When you press and hold your bottom right On/Off-button, you can shut down the device and then all datas will be saved.)
The problem with the Android-bootloaders (or the using of CLRCAD.exe and HARET.exe) seems to be, that they not regular shutdown WinMo before Android starts. Its only like a Softreset. And then unstored datas get lost.
It's the same way like you want to shut down your Windows-PC. You dont just pull the power plug but you choose "Start / Shutdown" and wait till it finishes to save all datas.
Hope, that helps.
Btw: sorry for my poor english...

Try mskip android loader. I don't have Winmo 6.5 any more (moved to MAGLDR) but from memory mskip has shortcuts you can add to your home screen to either launch Android straight away (it runs CLRCAD and HARET for you), or reboot and launch into Android automatically (which would solve your problem!)
Hope this helps.
aww ****, this happened to me just on sun night! i was wondering wth was going on. i even use the mskip app so what am i doing that somehow made my msgs disappear? damn, i really prefer the 3 sec option. i guess i got to get rid of it and select none.

[Q] Texting issues for Motorola Photon

Hello and thank you for taking he time to read this.I own a Motorola Photon with Android 2.3.4 as my operating sytem. Since the latest update, I have been having issues with my text messaging. Its strange as how it happens but what the totality of my issue is that when I reply to individuals I send text messages too ,other individuals would receive my text message that I did not reply to. For example:
Contact A sends me a text message "Hello how are you doing?" and Contact B send me a text message " Bring milk on your way home". Now, when I respond back to Contact A by saying "Im fine thank you and how have you been?, Contact B will receive the text message that was meant for Contact A.This seems to occur almost on a daily basis. Is there more folks out there that is having this same issue? And if so, please let me know what I would need to do to resolve this matter. I did update profile and I did have sprint talk a look at it but they are claiming its MOTOTROLAs/Android issues and that I will have to wait for them to push a fix.
Also, I am not using any 3rd party text app or have a rooted phone. Im using the standard MOTOBLUR launcher! I was using the standard motorola messaging app and had the problem as I described to which I started using the GO Messaging app which had the same issues and errors.I am back using the motorola messaging app.
Please let me know if there is a fix for this problem or if there are different alernatives that I can do to avoid this problem.I have been in contact with Nick, [email protected], who has stated that that a fix was sent out regarding this but I am .....I am still constantly having the text messaging issues and its causing a major problem where I'm always second guessing as to whom I'm replying to in my messages. Please let me know if there is going to be a major fix or a software update for this problem?
Please provide some type of feedback!
Thank you again for your time!
I do not have this problem on my Photon, but I did on my Evo for a minute. Twice in a month I happen to approach my mother with sexual comments!!!!
More or less, I cleaned up and deleted all my text messages. Here is what 'I' think the problem was. Lets say I know a girl name Lori and we text all the time. I did not have 30 text from her over a month, I had 1 text with 500 replies in it!!! Take the above and times it by 80+ people............
Saved them and deleted them all. Have not had the problem since! (Come to think of it, it was November 2010. I was joking with a friend over thanksgiving day sexual "Treat", my mother called me with "Excuse me?" and repeted what I had typed to the friend. I looked at text message and it was addressed to friend, but somehow..........anyway, that is how I fixed it!
---------- Post added at 04:12 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:51 PM ----------
I wanted to come back here and address this, although my last post is true and may seem funny, looking at the BIG picture, it was not and a very serious issue. What did or did not my boss receive? The girl that I REALLY liked, what did she receive? If my daughter asked me for money and I replied "Sure, I'll send you $50.00?", who did it go to?
After my mother's call, my mind was a wreck for 3 or 4 days thinking of what I sent and who received what.
If they are THAT important to you, get Titanium Backup and save them. Then blow them away weekly or so. I keep one screen of text messages, no need to scroll.
+1 To the suggestion above. I also had this problem occasionally on my old HTC Hero and I'm pretty sure when I would delete a bunch of threads and clean out all the text messages stored in the phone, this issue went away. Still an annoying problem though and it would be nice if it never happened.
As for backing up SMS/MMS messages, I recommend a simple Free app from the Market called "SMS Backup & Restore". It makes saving/backing up texts very easy -- just 2 or 3 touches of your screen, and it puts them all in a single .xml file that can easily be pulled off your phone or card via USB, emailed to yourself, etc.
Titanium Backup Pro. PERIOD!!! $6.58 and worth ever cent!!!
EDIT: I backup every 3:00AM Monday, then every few weeks move the backup to Desktop AND my 16Gb USB on my keychain!
Sort of bringing back an old thread, but my texts are not coming through any more. I can send them, but I dont get any. I do get mms. My wife, who is sitting right next to me, gets them and sends them, so I don't think it is Sprint. Might be a Sprint/Android thing though because she has a blackberry. Its been two days without a text and I normally do 20-50 texts a day.
I am stock rooted and using the stock messaging app. Nothing has changed from 2 days ago with the problem started. I've tried rebooting, roaming, and home only.
Any ideas?

Read back in this thread and you will find your answer. As I use my phone more and more, I still find the need to clean up worthless text to clear s**t up! Pandora lags, ZumoCast stutters, Facebook crashes. I blow away 60 to 80 text, problem solved!

Yeah, I deleted all my texts messages that I had stored. Still have not received a text, but I do get mms still. Tried updating PRL and Profile. Tried rebooting several times.... Still nothing.
Try sending yourself a text message. Sometimes I get a bunch that haven't come through by doing that. Also, install Google Voice as it will get messages too sometimes even if they don't make it to your sms app

[Q] SMS/Text messages disappearing

Hi,
Sorry if this question has been answered elsewhere, but I couldn't seem to find anything on it, and everything I did find seemed to mostly be for Froyo on much older phones... The cause might still be the same but don't know.
Anyway, I recently installed SynergyRom on my Galaxy S4, I'm also admittedly a hoarder of text messages, and have 11,000 or so text messages backed up through sms backup & restore. I kind of like having them all on my phone (yes, I've read before that sometimes restored messages cause minor issues, but I like it *shrug*). Anyway, I restored the messages to my phone, and eventually when I was texting someone, the stock messaging app got a force close, after which, all of my messages had disappeared. I didn't think much of it, restored again, and then today when I received a text the app force closed again, and all my messages disappeared again. Any thoughts?
Hopefully the answer isn't just I need to be less crazy about saving texts, but if that's really the cause, that's it.. Anyway, help/suggestions would be appreciated. T hanks!
Waiting for the answer too. I did not root my phone or anything, just the original phone from store. Sometimes the messages in message app disappear. The phone shows "there is no message", the only thing I can do is create new message. After I restart the phone, the messages come back in the message app.
I know by default in the messaging settings that there is a setting check box for "delete old messages....seems after so many message it will delete from a certain point...something like 200 messages...deletes oldest first. Go in and uncheck the box...see if that helps. Having that many texts is nuts...your a texting border...
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
Yea, I know about limits, and that's definitely not it.. I've heard other people say the text messages come back after you restart, but I'm not sure if that's only if you restart right away without sending more texts.. Mine didn't come back after a restart at least, but I didn't restart until much later.. Thanks for the suggestions so far though!

Not sure about retrieving from an app.
Visit CNET you might find something useful.

[Q] SMS Messages on Lock Screen

Hi
Is it possible to see who has sent me a text from the lock screen? Had a look at the lock screen widgets but none there for that - can you download more Z2 widgets?
Thanks
Wrong Forum, this should go in the Q&A Forum.
But a combination of DashClock and DashNotifier will give you what you want.
Or use Hangouts as your messaging app. It has a lock screen widget.
Since this topic was brought up, I might as well ask here. I notice that deleting messages and conversations with the default SMS app is extremely slow. I don't know if it's because I have 30,000+ messages already but even deleting a thread with 2 messages is still slow. I really like the default SMS but is there a faster SMS app that can manage thousands of messages? Go SMS is also slowing down so I want to try a different one.
Lol... If you find one, lemme know. I'm a text-aholic, so I'm sending ~6000 a month, and I like to archive my old ones (OCD I guess). The only solution I've found is to use TitBackup and every month or so backup all messages, then put take that backup and put it on my computer, and delete all messages on the phone.

Is it the same issues with you when deleting threads? I tried SMS Backup and Restore for backing up my sms but Sony has Xperia Transfer app as well so either is convenient for sms backup. The SMS app is the real challenge though. Even my previous Galaxy S2 and my cousin's S4 have slowdown issues with their default sms app.
I think that might just be the way Android process text messages. Was your last phone any faster? I can't honestly remember if mine was (and TitBackup still does it quite fast btw).

Galaxy S2 deletes messages and threads faster. Maybe it's because it's a backup file which is why it's slower to process it? Deleting threads takes me around 20 sec or more depending on the size of the thread.

Yeah, never again am I using any kind of message backup other than TitBackup. I did a test-import of one of my old text archives, and it was done in under 2 minutes.
For now, I'm just gonna have to wait the couple hours for my SMS Backup and Restore backup to be imported, then I'm so done with it.
Can you also test how long does it take to delete a message from your backup? No need to delete the entire thread if it's important, just maybe 4 messages in the thread will do.
use Hangouts as your messaging app. It has a lock screen widget.
