[ROM] [Shameless Kang-Bang] Core CM-5 w/Exchange Apps [03-25-10] - Nexus One Android Development

NOOB WARNING: Only flash this if you have nandroid backup experience using custom recovery and have flashed roms before!
This ROM is a repackaging of CyanogenMod-5 for Nexus One (STABLE) [03/23/2010 / 5.0.5.3]. Basically... I've added in the working MOTO "Exchange Calendar" and "Global Address List" APKs for those who need Exchange ActiveSync with calendar and corporate directory (does not sync Outlook tasks).
Do thank Cyanogen and buy him a beer since this ROM is completely his work along with all others credited on his blog!
For info on CyanogenMod ROM please check the above links with lists of specs and features. I'm just a smartphone business-poweruser needing MS Exchange corporate mail plus corporate calendar and thought I'd share my paste-n-bake of CM for those who might care to see if it works for them.
The reason for this is so I might get a chance to pickup a skill or two and I am just starting to learn the basics of using the dsixda kitchen and have just starting reading up on java programming. so, I am sure that many of your questions will surpass my ability to answer them intelligently (if at all). Be gentle
Please support XDA and the individual developers by donating!!!
Changes to CM:
Replaced the cyan colored Nexus boot animation with original full color Nexus boot animation.
Added MotoCAL
Added MotoGAL
Added Logger (noob friendly logcat app)
Added WiFi Tether
Google Apps version combines both CyanogenMod and his separate Google Apps update.zip into a single rom plus the above and these apps and widget:
AccuWeather Widget
Astrid Task/ToDo
Astro File Manager
Quickboot (utility app reboots direct to recovery)
SpeedTest (3G download/upload monitor)

try system/app. adb push there. that worked for me on cm505. not sure about 5051 or 5052 or 5053 since i skipped xxx1 and xxx2... and have used my rom from xxx3. in this rom the apks are in system.

thanks. this is exactly what I'm looking for. thanks for sharing your hard working to us. although i believe it should come from stock build, like what iphone & Windows phone can do.

Nothing to do with pushing the apk file. Sounds like you have Exchange 2007 and your administrator does not allow unprovisionable devices. See if you can talk him/her/them into changing that.

sorry to hear that. if both the apks installed and you can actually run the apps with no fcs, then you may want to check with your system admin at work to check your user exchange account settings for mobile activesync. ...but you probably already know that. when setting up your work email did you check both ssl and accept all certs?
good luck searching xda for solution and consider reporting back solution if found.

Exchange Contacts not Syncing
Sorry for the bother. I used this as my first ROM on my new Nexus One mainly because I wanted to get the Exchange Calendar Syncing. I went through all of the steps that I have found elsewhere and successfully installed your modification. The problem that I am having is that even though the phone says it is and has synced the Exchange Contacts nothing appears in the contact list. I have tried all of the options for displaying contacts, that I can find in the phone but nothing seams to help. The strange thing is that I can add a contact in the phone and it will appear in Outlook.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in Advance

Didn't work for me ! but ... looking into old stuff I found some old HTC Hero .apk for exchange apps .. If this works , ill post them here ...

Something that took me awhile to setup for my boss (I'm the IT admin for a business) is to make sure that you're not using Personal Folders for the location to save your e-mail, contacts, calender events, etc to and switch it to Mailbox - "your name" in the Mail preferences in Control Panel if it isn't already set that way. If it's set to Personal Folders, your info is only residing on the server for a moment and then getting saved to your local computer. If that isn't the solution, next to to check the Event Manager / Exchange Manager on your Exchange server and see if it's even making a connection.

That is all setup correctly and did work on the stock ROM. I used the Logger this ROM included and found the following Error Message:
E/Contacts(###### ######)(352): Uncaught exception in EasSyncServicejava.lang ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException
The ####s are the name I chose for the Exchange sync account.

good luck following chesh420's suggestion below. can you tell us if your exchange calendar is activesync-ing ok? ...and...can you access your exchange global address list using the "corporate directory" app? i hope the rom works ok for you ...that is why i'm asking
btw... spend a few bucks in the market and buy "pure calendar widget" since it is a clean tool to display the combined appointments of exchange calendars, google calendar, and astrid to-do tasks in a variety of widget sizes and skins.

Sync With Google

Google Sync is a free service that allows you to sync your contacts, email and calendar with your gmail account.
It is a two-way sync, meaning that if you add an appointment or contact to your phone, it will upload to Google's cloud and update your gmail information as well.
I use Google Sync to keep my contacts in the cloud, vs using myPhone since I have multiple phones but only one Windows Live account. If you have ever synced two phones to myPhone under one account, you'll see right away why this is a bad thing.
One of my favorite benefits from using Google Sync is the fact that it not only stores my phone contacts, it also stores their facebook links and contact pictures as well. This means that I can freely flash another ROM without worrying about backing up all of my contacts to SIM or myPhone and then manually updating all of the information for them.
The best part of Google Sync has to be the push email service. As emails arrive (assuming you have set the account up correctly), they will be pushed to your phone via ActiveSync. You don't have to be at your computer for this, it's done over the air.
The only think Google Sync can't do is sync Tasks. If you choose Tasks during the setup, you will receive a cryptic error.
Now that I've told you about the benefits of Google Sync, let's go over how to use it. This assumes you have an existing gmail account. I don't know how to sync with Google without a gmail account, sorry.
I always add my hotmail account first. For some strange reason you can never go back and edit the settings for the first mail account you setup on Windows Mobile, so I use my hotmail account for this.
Steps:
Select your Mail tab and hit the Menu button
Choose "Add Account"
Under "Choose a Mail Provider", select "Outlook" (Don't select Gmail!)
Put your entire gmail address ([email protected]) in the "Email address" box, followed by your password.
Select "Next"
Under "User name" put your email address ([email protected]) again.
The Password field should be filled in, if not just put it in again.
Scroll down.
Leave "Domain" blank.
Scroll down.
Leave "Save password" checked.
Under "Server address" put m.google.com
Leave "This server requires an encrypted (SSL) connection" checked.
Select "Next"
If all options are selected, deselect Tasks (Very Important!)
If not, select Mail, Contacts, Calendar
Hit Advanced Settings
Peak time and Non-peak time (I have "As items arrive" on both here) sets how often your emails are pushed to your phone.
I have nationwide coverage, so I also select "Sync data when roaming".
Hit "Done"
Hit "Done" again.
The phone will now connect to the Google Sync server and begin updating your contacts, calendar appointments and email. This may take a few minutes, depending on the number of contacts and such. If you have any unread messages in your gmail inbox, they should now appear on your phone in short order. You may choose "Send/Receive" from the mail Menu if you think it is taking too long.
You will now be able to receive your email sent to your gmail account as soon as it arrives. I have also forwarded my email from my other accounts to my gmail account, but this may be too much for you.
I would not recommend this to anyone who does not have the "Smart Phone" plan (so-called "Unlimited Data Plan"), as it will eat up your bandwith quickly. It may also have a detrimental effect on your battery, due to the fact that it requires a constant data and Active Sync connection to work properly.
If you are concerned about your battery, you can try changing the Peak and Non-peak options under "Advanced" to longer intervals. If it makes a big difference in the life of your battery, I would love to hear about it here!
You can view the original Google Sync video and tutorial links here:
http://www.google.com/mobile/sync/
Hopefully this will be of use to someone out there! Please let me know if you use Google Sync or if you have trouble following my directions.
---Issue With Labels/Folders---
If you have set gmail to tag messages with labels as they come in, you may not be able to read the messages on your phone. XDA-DEV user pantyshot has managed a workaround and posted it here. Be sure to thank pantyshot for the fix if you find it handy!
Also, newer versions of Outlook Mobile (any available as a cab install so that people don't have to use a custom rom?) support sorting messages by subject. Pretty darn close to the threaded messages in the orgasmic Android Gmail app.
I've been doing this since I got the phone, but it is nice to see someone write up the details.
Nice thx man. I didnt even know this was possible on WM coming from a Nexus. I synced my phonebook with MS outlook but nice to know this is possible.
This should be a sticky!!!
Thanks... nice sticky note.
On Friday, I bought an HD2 to replace my Nexus One (which I gave to my daughter). The N1 & Android are just fine but I wanted to play with the HD2 and WinMo. Not too worried about the lack of support for WinMo 7 as I am certain that we will find versions we can use thanks to XDA.
Ok, back on-topic... I was using Google Sync to get my messages from Gmail to my Nexus One. I now know how to do this with WinMo 6.5. I will address this when I get back home as I am on a business trip in Amman, Jordan and I don't want to rake-up astronomical data roaming charges while over here.
this is helpful for newbies/ beginners..
Anyway I had done set up the gmail as "PRIMARY" account only when i got HD2. why i need hotmail set up as primary account then add gmail? I just curious..
I've been using this method as well, but has anyone noticed that you cannot sync your labels from gmail? Is it just me or Outlook just syncs the inbox aside from contacts and calendar?
The only glitch I have seen with using google sync is that when you import your contacts from google, they get sorted as Last Name, First Name. (Doe, John.)I have always liked seeing my contact list as first name last name. (John Doe.) If you manually try to switch this in your contact list, it gets over written once google syncs again. Does anyone know how to possibly fix this?
This method is GREAT. Big thanks to OP

I'm not sure why, but whenever you add a new email account to Windows Mobile and attempt to go back and edit it, the first account you added will always be grayed out. This means you can't modify, or even delete the first account.
Since you may decide you want to change how often you check your gmail, I thought you might want to add a hotmail account (Windows Live) first, since those settings are automatic and can't be changed anyway.
I've always had to do a hardreset in the past to get rid of bad gmail settings, so I learned to always put hotmail first.
Hope that helps

I know, this is annoying. I have added two new contacts and both of them were sorted like this.
You can try deleting the "Last Name" field in your phone contacts, then add the last name beside the first name, but I haven't actually tried that.
If it works, please get back to us

When I used the official Gmail App, it represented labels as folders. Because Google doesn't actually have different folders (just different flags for each message), I don't know of any way to split the messages by folder.
As a matter of fact, I don't think you can do this with regular folders via Outlook, due to the way the built-in email client works.
If anyone knows a fix to this please post; we would all like to separate our messages by folders if possible!

You can try this app I have called Contact Changer. Just install to phone, hit the change button and soft reset. After that they should display correctly, and it's actually WinMo that displays contacts like that b/c I have mine sync'd through Microsoft Myphone (b/c gmail messes up the contact pics) and they display the same way.
Now once you run the app, if you add a contact or delete a contact it will revert to last name first. Just run the Contact Changer and reboot again and you will be golden.

Funny you mention that.
I actually used the built-in option to link my favorite contacts to their respective facebook account in my friends list. This changed the contact picture from the camera image I had to their facebook avatar. When next I flashed my phone, Google loaded the contacts back with the facebook linke and facebook avatar, which was very surprising to me.
Does myPhone do the same thing if you use them to keep track of your contacts?

Not sure what you posted this link in reference to. Unless you are confusing Google Sync with ActiveSync...
ActiveSync is the method of connecting your phone directly to your PC, for file transfers, updating your ROM image and standard backups. It is also the name of the protocol that the Microsoft Exchange Servers use to sync data between the Server and ActiveSync-enabled devices.
Google Sync is a free Microsoft Exchange Server that allows "push" email via your phone's data connection. You don't have to be near a PC to sync your calendar, contacts or gmail.
I think the threaded e-mail conversations are only available in the WM 6.5.x versions of WinMo. I am also unable to sync my other folders (Sent, Saved) from Gmail. I have them checked off as well in the Manage Folders option, but nothing appears in these folders after syncing. I think the only possible folder to sync is Inbox.

Are you sure they are actually folders? I thought gmail only has labels that appear as folders in the native clients.
Also, this is the same as most Outlook syncs; it will only give you the unread messages. There may be a setting in gmail that will allow you to retrieve old messages, but I'm not sure why you would want to do that on a mobile phone.
If you want to just get your emails, you can use the "Gmail" option when setting up your new email account on the HD2. This won't "push" like the "Outlook" option will, but you can still set it to manually check as often as every 5 minutes if you can spare the battery life.
Of course, you would be much better off getting the official gmail client for that, since that will also support your lables-as-folders option.
Myself, I prefer to use Google Sync and let that push emails to my phone as well as syncing all of my gmail and phone contacts. I don't use labels any more and don't want all the "Sent" or "Archived" messages to clutter up my phone.
Yea, you're probably right about the labeling/folder issue. I just want to see a saved e-mail to look some thing up at times, but maybe I'll just log onto gmail.com for that on my phone. Is there any Gmail client available for WinMo phones? I haven't seen any. Also, does push kill battery life? (ex. sync every 5 minutes) Or is it a more sophisticated syncing method that will only connect to data when new messages arrive?

Notion Ink Email V1.5

-From Adam Firmware 1.5, software version 0.9-
So just tried the new Adam email client on my Nook running Honeycomb and it worked fine. A lot of the bugs from the first version have been sorted out - it now links to your contacts and seems to download files.
Just place the apk in your system//app directory
I will test out the other programs, but so far:
- the calendar seems to still force close when adding a new appointment.
Finally! Installs fine and runs on decent speed on CM7. This could be the email app I've been waiting for

Under the main Settings for the Nook, in Accounts & Sync, disable Gmail sync. That'll let you use this app instead of Gmail without having to uninstall anything.
Not sure how to remove an account from Mail'd though. Hope that helps.

Awesome! This version seems much cleaner than the old version.
Why does it look the same to me concerning the look?

You have push mail set on exchange server defined under ActiveSync?
If so, I recall having similar problems with m.google.com few months ago, the reason being that Activesync would no longer autostart. What helped in my case was simple removing the connection and then setting it again from the start. Not sure if you suffer from the same AS dementia, but maybe give it a try.

- link your yahoo account to gmail account, then configure gmail push

[A] Disable Google Contacts Sync & Force Store Locally in ICS

Reclaim your Contacts !
Actually turned out simpler to do than i initially thought it would be.
Enables "Keep Locally" ( keep_local ) option for adding new contacts instead of forced google account.
Prevents google from deleting all you contacts when you remove your account
Disables google contact sync
The offending package comes with gapps if you got google that way.
GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk you will find it in /system/app/ (need root file explorer to see it though)
You can make this fix in 3 ways, the first may not need root but i cant test as my phone is rooted.
In Settings>App find it in the list of all installed apps, click it, click disable. (please someone tell me if they can do this without root)
Use a root file explorer such as "Root Browser", navigate to /system/app/ backup the app .apk to your sdcard for example, then delete it.
You can also try clicking the app .apk in "Root Browser" and choose uninstall, but i could get this to work.
Thats it ! , no need to reboot. Enjoy
(to test it worked, just navigate to Settings>Accounts>(your google account) and you will see there is no longer the option to sync contacts)

What would be the thing to replace this with? It's important to have something as convenient as what we're replacing. You can export you contacts to a single .vcf file. This can then be bluetoothed over to your desktop, uploaded to a server or transferred by USB or sdcard but what we really want is something as convenient as Google Contacts which syncronises to a place/server that you control automatically and easily.
Not sure if there's an alternative app out there though for this?
There's Go Contacts, ContactMoney and alternative dialers but I don't think these have alternative sync methods.
I think I'd prefer something from the fDroid/homebrew/commandline way. Perhaps a SyncML solution, or just something that automates the process of exporting contacts, encrypting them with a basic password and uploading to dropbox or an email address.
i was thinking the same thing, like ftp/sftp backup. it could be done pretty easily but i may not be the person to do it , i havent looked around though and suspect there may already be something already that could do this...
btw, yes i love f-droid too and recommend everyone to install its repo browser app and check out whats on offer.

In f-droid you find funambol (syncML), LDAP Sync and aCal (CardDAV).
I don't use any of them (to lazy to set up a server) but with some effort you should be able to make contact-sync work for you.

I purged GoogelContactsSync and GoogleCalendarSync from my device.
For syncing I use SyncMate(free), which I found pretty convenient.
hotmail/corporate sync
This worked fabulously till i decide to use a Hotmail account (with the stock email app), from that moment on the problem reappeared, just instead of trying to store the contacts in gmail, it now tries to store in Hotmail/corporate account!!!!
Has Google hired all the stupid developers that Microsoft fired??? Microsoft is becoming famous for it ability to consider their clients stupid and the attitude: when-know-what-you-want-better-than-you, now Google seems to be going with the same mentality!
Any idea how to stop this on the hotmail account?
p.s. my only workaround was to use the Hotmail app instead of the stock email app, unfortunately the Hotmail app (Microsoft, remember?) thinks i will never need to see any email older than 30 days?!?!?! WTF???

I use MyPhoneExplorer - it syncs my local contacts to my Thunderbird and vice versa. It syncs calendar events too ... so eventually I've got a copy and it's all local. One thing it doesn't do is contacts photos, so I also use SuperBackup to make a copy on my SD card (this way I can get the pictures up quickly).
When contacts are in Thunderbird (I've created there an address book just for syncing the phone) I can re-arrange, edit, etc. and when syncing back the pictures are retained ... Then I do SuperBackup to have a copy of new phone book with pictures.
Regards,...

This little app will do the trick:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fjsoft.mylocalaccount
After you install it, go to Accounts and create one "MyLocalAccount". After that, all you have to do is to transfer your contacts from the Google account into the "Local contacts" account just created. You can do this with the built-in Export/Import contacts tool.
f . . k the google, they work for attack to our privacy only :\
Hi, i want to reverse this topic
sync google accounts
It's been a while since I've been through this, but unfortunately I have a similar problem. My problem is "Google account" in accounts and sync. But I can only select google photos when I click on the sync mark. No selection box for contacts. How can I fix that?
The device has clone s3 and ics 4.0.4 on it. The gapps packages available for this release also do not work. It does not synchronize people in any case. I cleaned the data from the applications, I deleted Accounts.db and reinstalled it.
Finally, I found the following lines for Accounts.xml and added it, but still there is no positive situation. What else can I do? Thank you.
Syncable = "true"> <authority id = "3" account = ".." type = "com.google" authority = "com.android.contacts"
<PeriodicSync period = "86400" />
</ Authority>

[Q] Is there a way to make my S4 look like a GNex for exchange email purposes?

Here's the deal - I want to add my corporate email account to the stock app on my S4 however - my company has stopped approving individual Android phones to the network. They now want me to use the 3rd party app Touchdown, which I don't want to do.
My last phone was a Galaxy Nexus and was able to successfully use the activesync exchange. Is there a way to trick my company in thinking I have a GNex (approved phone) so I can use the native app? Changing the phone name in the build.prop file didn't seem to work.
I'd prefer to use the S4 native app but if I can pull the stock app from the GNex, that works too.
Thanks for your help!
Matt
I can't really answer your question, but have one of my own to you. What's wrong with Touchdown? I actually prefer it since I only have to enter my pin when I launch the app. When I configured the stock app for Exchange I had to enter it every time I woke my phone which drove me crazy. I acknowledge it's a personal preference thing.

Stock looks so much nicer. Looks like an app actually created for JB. Touchdown looks like a blackberry app from 2003. I like the way stock integrates with my calendar.
Also, I used the modified version of the stock app so I didn't have to enter a PIN

While I agree that visually Touchdown is not as nice as the stock app, it will sync the phone's native calendar with exchange.

Do you know how? My understand is that while it may sync with contacts, it can't sync with the stock calendar.

When you setup the account in Touchdown you just select the Calendar to sync.
I have used it on many different ROMs and since my Galaxy Nexus. I have noticed that sometimes it can take a while for the events to appear in the calendar. (A couple hours at times at first.)
I think you are SOL. The Exchange server you will connect to can (and is probably configured) to check a unique hash generated from your current phone that is registered at the first sync that was done on your GNex. There are hacks out there, but I have no idea how well they work.

Can you point me to the modified stock app? I'd at least like to take a look and see if it's something I can use. I'll not totally sold on Touchdown and an alternative would be nice.

I'm a little confused here. So you can use your phone but only if you use Touchdown. Does touchdown connects to your network some special way? What error do you get when you try to use your S4 mail app?

I've been using Touchdown for a few years now and I really like it but I've never found a way to have the Touchdown calendar copied/synched/etc to the phone's built-in calendar. I know this option exists for the contacts but I just checked all of the settings in TD again and an option to do so with the calendar does not appear to exist. Please tell me how you accomplish this?

When you initially set up the account it gives you the tick boxes for email, contacts, and calendar. I select email and calendar but not contacts and it has always synced my calendar.

Correct. I was told by my internal IT that they do not authenticate individual models of Android phones anymore for activesync (because there is so many different versions. ugh.). So they tell you that if your device isn't already on the list, you need to use Touchdown. I was able to use the stock app on the Gnex, but can't on my S4. The error message simply says "Setup could not finish: Authentication failed".
I was hoping there would be some way to manipulate the app so my phone would appear as a GNex to the network.
Now that the S4 had been out for a little bit I will give this a bump and hope someone had a solution Please help . Thanks!

Not sure if this will help you but for a while I had flipped to another client see this url http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon-galaxy-note-2/231093-i-miss-my-email-widget.html
And see the post from 12-18-2012, 11:55 AM alvarez13.
One of the many times I restored I did have a problem with FC's and created a step 6...
6. If this doesn't work just remove those two apps from the app folder and install the 2 apks from the SD Card. Then run TIBU and convert email to a system app, if it errors reboot the device.
If all else fails you just remove those two apks, and rename the original files back and reboot. Of course as always....
Please make a backUp when trying any mod, I am not responsible if your phone breaks. Yada Yada :good:
So update: I downloaded CM and can use the stock email app. For some reason on CM - my S4 appears as a GNex to my company's servers. Is there anyways to make that change so I can enjoy stock email use on TouchWiz?
Somebody must know how to make this change. Please help!

I also did not find a way to sync calendar. Should I un-install Touch Down and re-install it to get to the option?
Thanks

I would suggest Hyperdrive as an option and choose aosp email client vs tw. Hope that helps. Idk if it will but it seems it would since it's based off of cm's email client.
If I helped don't forget to hit that thanks button.
