Firewall blocking? - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just recently figured out how to tether my laptop to my Eris, however, I am unable to access my FTP sites. Is there a firewall within the Eris that is blocking FTP access?

most *free* or lite tether apps have limitations on sites you can visit. I'm going to say yes.

Perhaps I didn't ask the question properly.
I connect my Eris to my laptop via the USB Cable. Then I use PDAnet to give my laptop internet connection.
Using my laptop, I should be able to access anything on the internet, shouldn't I? Isn't this "normal" internet connection?
However, when I try using my FTP software to upload files to one of my website, I cannot get a connection to the IP address I am trying to access. I can only assume it is blocked since it will work on a direct internet connection.

If you're using windows, try disabling windows firewall.

If you are using the "free" or trial version of PDAnet then you will not have access to FTP/http sites. The full version should work just fine, firewall or not.
Quote form their site "Note: Once trial expires, you can continue using PdaNet for free. The only difference is that free edition blocks secure web sites. "

XDA, Citrix & Internet Explorer

I have my XDA and am a Systems Engineer at work. We use the Citrix Secure Gateway so I can access the company servers from anywhere I can get net access.
I want to try and do this using my XDA but in order to be able to I have to use IE running 128bit encryption. Is there any way of being able to tell what encryption level I am running on my XDA???
Anyone got any tips or indeed managed to have any success using there XDA to connect to a Citrix Server Farm?? I know it is possible as I have read about people doing it.
With thanks
Jollster
Try the following:

It should help you connect to Citrix using the PPC
Many thanks mate

[Q] Internet Access to Windows Media Player

Hi - Is anyone aware of an Android app that will allow you to access your Windows Media Player library over the internet?
I can access it in the house using 2player.. but what would be really cool would be able to access my media over the internet from a friends house, or even at work..
Or do I need to install a third party app on my PC at home too? (I'd rather not do that unless it's the only option... and if it is the only option.. which one is the best one to choose?)
Thanks.
you can use any app that supports DLNA can connect to Media Player
All the ones I've tried only work locally.. Ie. Within range of my home wifi network... I want one that will work from anywhere...?
Sent from my X10 using XDA and Swype.
Anyone??? surely I'm not the only one who wants this??

Yes, it is possible using a VPN (Virtual Private Network)
A VPN binds your home network and your XPERIA X10i into one single LAN (192.168.1.0/24)
This means any services available to you on your home LAN is available to you on your XPERIA X10i anywhere in the world as long as your phone has an Internet connection.
You could look at setting up a PPTP server in your home network as a first step, but it is the least secure.
An OpenVPN server would be better and more secure.
HOWEVER, it can become VERY complex if you've never done this before and things don't fall into place the first time.
A visit to SmallNetBuilder or a Windows PC forum could provide additional information.
And if you do embark on setting up PPTP, one piece of advise, don't forget Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) tunneling protocol
The following config setup just pulled randomly from the web may provide a basic starter to get PPTP server up and running on a Windows 7 PC.
How to Set Up PPTP VPN Server in Windows 7
However I'd suggest for best practice you should use a dedicated VPN Server/router to provide a VPN PPTP server, as it's always up and provides added benefits for security, given PPTP is not the best VPN solution.
PPTP client is built into the Android OS and can be found in the VPN settings.
A better solution is to use OpenVPN and OpenVPN on a rooted XPERIA X10i.
You need a tun.ko module in the ROM/build when using OpenVPN client on Android.

[Q] Access internet not as mobile device

Many websites recognize when a connection is being made from a mobile device; some give an option to view their mobile site, others automatically load it.
I want to be able to access the internet from my phone, but have all websites think I am a PC, NOT a mobile device. How can I accomplish this?
I have encountered several websites that offer mobile versions of their site for a price $$. These sites will not display correctly on my phone if I go to the normal site vs the mobile site. I believe that they are purposely blocking website functionality to mobile devices because they want people to pay for access to their mobile site.

Thank you for pointing out the "user agent" key word, this helped me find the information I was seeking.
For non-CM7:

[Q] Is there any application to allow me access my phone from web?

I've been searching around for a while and the only one is http://remotephoneaccess.com .
Is there any other application or WEB interface for remotely access my android? I need something like that every time when i forget the phone in my car or somewhere else, just to see who called and SMS or if i lose it.
Due to the nature of NAT, you'll need to do this via push from the phone to a server that can be "seen" from anywhere on the Internet, then pick up that info from said server. There is no way to route TCP/IP directly to your phone without access to the carriers' infrastructure. The app you link to takes a different tack: SMS (not TCP/IP) which can uniquely identify and trigger your phone from anywhere.

It should work with a VPN connection to a server from both sites and a remote control software like PAW Server from market.

its one way, remotely control you PC.

remote dekstop app?

is there an app out there that lets you remote into your computer and transfer files over? i've used teamviewer in the past for just remote connection , but it has stopped working for me. it may be a firewall issue or something i just haven't found yet but i wanted to see what others where using.
I use POCKETCLOUD for RDP / VNC.

If you are just after files then consider setting up an FTP server.
Proxying isn't necessary if you intend to authenticate directly with the FTP server but I have my server only respond to internal addresses and therefore have to tunnel in and then proxy the requests through the tunnel.
To accomplish this I setup a proxy on the phone (proxydroid) a ssh tunnel (connectbot) and a ftp client (andftp). I'd like to find a client that has its own socks5 proxy so I would not have to use proxydroid.
thanks i'll try out the pocket cloud one. i don't have the knowledge to set up an ftp server. actually now that i think about it i don't really need to transfer any files anyway. but being able to kick off downloads on my desktop was nice to have when i had it working. thanks guys.
I paid for the Splashtop app. I like it so far. I am able to use the native screen resolution on my pc and everything seems to work fine. Give it a try.
I second Splashtop if you are looking for a remote desktop app. The only thing is right now they are moving to Splashtop 2 and last I checked the android app for it isn't out yet but Everything still works.

I got splashtop for free from amazon app store when they had it for the free app of the day. Not rubbing it in but just throwing it out there for the ones not familiar.

I use LogMeIn Ignition. It works really well, even over a so-so connection It's pricy, but I believe they give you a 1 month trial.

for work use, on an exchange server, the stock exchange Email app allows you to access shares over CIFS if you know the address to the share, allows me to browse and download anything on our company intranet
