Well, that it was a good run - Droid Eris General

Droid Eris November 6, 2009 - May, 2010
That seems a bit short. I'm still happy with my purchase and hope this doesn't stop HTC from supporting it later on (I know it won't be soon) and that the devs may lose interest... Oh well. Maybe i'll scrap some cash together and just grab a desire when it comes out... who knows.
**Sorry for the poor title. I didn't catch it til it was too late.**

it's really all verizon's fault, they NEVER promoted the eris, and if you went in there wanting to buy one they would push the droid on you like no tomorrow.
hopefully this doesnt stop them from releasing the 2.1 OTA update to the general public, it will really help development along for us. Someday, when my eris dies I will upgrade (damn that incredible looks so good...) but until that day, I dont regret a single thing about it. except for installing leak, good thing a got a replacement though

It always seemed to me like the Eris has been advertised as Verizon's cheaper (even free for a lot of us) alternative to the Droid, and it did it's job well.
With the Incredible and Nexus One and all of the other phones (probably) coming out soon I'd expect the Droid to take the Eris' place in the lineup, like a "Buy a new HTC Incredible and get a Motorola Droid FREE" kind of deal.

ah.... oh well...
Looks like I will be upgrading soon... and paying the full price too lol, since I JUST started my contract on November 2009... oh well technology comes and goes.. and I'll have a new testing device!

Why would you upgrade that quick? The eris still has quite a few miles left in her. Early adopters can be very annoying sometimes. I have a friend (kind of) that buys a new macbook everytime there is a refresh. Drives me bat**** crazy to pay several hundred dollars more for something that does only a little more than the old one...

We all know technology changes daily be it hardware or software or whatever...
Cell phones, pda's ect are particularly susceptible as they are market driven and manufacturers are always trying to come out with the "Next Big Thing".
Hell the moto droid is now available on several websites for 20 bucks on a new 2 year...Letstalk.com etc...
Being a former 8 year blackberry user I can say this for Android at least theyre not just putting a new facade over a dated os\ui . So long as my eris doesnt melt down at the end of life date I'm good. Also so long as you're a VZW customer you'll get support for your device even if it is minimal.

I always felt the Eris was kind of an afterthought, the way they marketed it.

It's just a thought for now... I haven't totally decided but I will wait and see what the HTC incredible or whatever VZW comes out with, has to offer... if its something like an amazingly fast phone I'll probably get it.. if not I will stay with the Eris.. I don't hate the Eris, I think it is one amazing phone
plus I'd still be on here [XDA] using the Eris for testing stuff, helping out as much as I can..

looking at the incredible's spec sheet though, it's really worth the upgrade, i mean... it literally DOUBLES most of the specs, the re resolution of the screen is 480x800... the eris' screen is 480 in LENGTH, that's pretty impressive. Will i get the incredible? if i had the money, which i dont, so i will stay with my eris for as long as I deem fit, because honestly, it's a damn good phone for what it's worth.

and what about in six more months after that and they double the specs on the incredible

exactly... I will see when i comes out what people are saying first.. and the eris is an amazing phone for the price. I really dont think you can beat the value.

After rocking an HTC Touch for 1.5 years, I bought a brand new Eris from someone and avoided a contract reset just a week ago. I think it's a great phone, and I have no regrets. I can upgrade anytime but I'm still on a very good Alltel contract so I want to hold out as long as I can before switching to a VZW plan. It does everything I need it to do.

Has anyone heard anything more about this? I'd like to know if it's actually going to happen or not. Although I'm sure if it is we'll find out soon.. I'd also like to know if they'd offer us an upgrade for free or at least half price. If they stop doing the phone completely I think they should at least offer us something. I'd love to upgrade to the Incredible if it was free or half price..

why would they give us a new phone simply because they've stopped selling it?
If you have to do a warranty replacement or anything like that, I'm sure there is a large multitude of backup units, and once those run out/they stop carrying those, verizon will simply replace it with a phone of equal value and hardware features like they always have done for discontinued phones.

Where did you hear that the nexus one isn't coming to verizon. It's been confirmed for verizon for a while now. There just isn't a release date. I suspect we'll hear about it next month at the google I/o conference as will as news about froyo.

I just read an article about the nexus one being scrapped. Thought you just another person complaining because they were impatient. I'll eat my words and apologize now.

yeah, the nexus one is pretty dead.
plagued by 3g problems, and low sales, the only thing to really look forward to in picking one up over another phone like the incredible is that it it's wireless N chipset miiiiiiiiiiight (big might) get support soon.
honestly, for the price you'd be better off getting an incredible and waiting for root to get vanilla-android.
and man, why do people hate sense ui so much? the only ONLY problem it has is how laggy it can get. and on the eris? honestly, I expected it when I bought it looking at the specs. but upgrading to 2.1 got rid of ALL the lag for me. I love the look and extra screens of sense.
and jebus... the incredible is rocking DOUBLE the cpu and ram hardware, using nearly the same rosie build as the eris. it will be faster then us on 2.1 out of the freaking box, and with root... you'll be blazing through apps like crazy.

Bye bye, Eris.

So I went swimming with my trusty little Eris last night. He didn't seem to like it too much. So I've got a Thunderbolt in my hand and I've left (albeit not necessarily on purpose) my first love.
Mad thanks to all the devs and themers and basically everybody here who's exponentially smarter than I am. I'm not leaving the Eris entirely since my chick still has hers, so keep up the good work guys and thanks for making the last year.5 a brilliant experience.

I was gonna start a new thread, but I'll just add mine in here. Alas I have moved on to the Thunderbolt too. I recieved a private sale invitation in the mail, and I could not pass on the 200 dollar TBolt without using an upgrade haha. I will miss my eris, but it is going into my capable fathers hands, and I believe that he will take good care of my baby. Fare well modders, and I will keep in touch, just not as often.
MuerteMan signing out.
i will stick with my eris.
Im hoping I can wait it out until next march time for the new phones lol. With rooting and roms its runs pretty decent
I had no problem with mine and was prepared to give my wife the upgrade and wait for a dual core, buy the pool incident gave me the opportunity for a freebe so I took it.

4.3" screen, vs. the Eris' 3.2" To be honest, when I pick up my Eris now it feels so small. I got used to the Bolts size pretty quick - the thickness is about the same. The killer thing for me with the bolt is speed. It is rooted, but I haven't seen the need to overclock. The couple times I did, I didn't really notice much difference. I don't game so take it for what it is worth.
I loved my Eris. I love my Bolt. I will love my new multi-core phone in January when I get another upgrade.

Size is why I got the Eris in the first place, so I definitely hear you on that.
my wife and i just picked up our first smart phones - both erises (erii?) - free from family members. our carrier has given us the option of upgrading early, but we are thrilled with these phones. we're running Workshed's GSB v3.5 and couldn't be happier with it (and these phones). we're in a 4g market, so our next phones will likely have that capability, but i'd like to hold out as long as i can.
having only just joined the eris (for that matter, droid) community, i'm in no rush to jump ship to one of the newest phones available. when i do, though, i imagine it'll be a bit of a sad day
Welcome to the eris! May i also suggest Gin-Sen-Tazz that will reeeeaaallly make you love this phone. I'm so proud of what my eris can do... i literally run a live wallpaper just because i can and cuz this phone was never supposed to be able to. I don't care if kills my battery lol!

[Q] Should I still consider this phone??

Okay, so I was going to pick up this phone for my wife at Best Buy for $1 on Saturday, but I guess I'm having second thoughts after reading these threads. It seems like everyone is unloading the Fassy. Are there still people out there that would suggest this phone (she is coming from an old Blackberry!). Thanks for your thoughts!
I still have the phone and I love it. It's fast, responsive, and I believe it has a bright future in terms of developments on gingerbread and beyond. That being said, it's worth considering your budget and whether it's worth it to get a newer phone (possibly on a 4G network, if that applies to where you live and the usage of the phone). For $1, though, any alternative phone options may have to be extraordinary.
what he said.
good day.
Right on! Thx for the reply....I'm still kickin it w/the OG Droid and am waiting for that right 4G device, but for her coming off a bb 8330, this will be light yrs ahead. I'm def gonna root and make it right....should be fun to mess with a new phone! Thx again!

I bought mine for .01 on amazon in oct 2010. It has been a rollercoaster with development (meaning with the lack of source, NOT our developers.) For most of the people who have been here a long time, its a love hate relationship with this phone. Just know there are some developers here who have completely transformed our phones. Without these key people we would be where the continum is... wait... too early.
Buy it.

HTC Confirms Droid Incredible 2 Recieving ICS

Maybe this sheds more hope on the X2 getting ICS? The main difference between the phones are the X2 has a dual-core processor while the Incredible 2 has a single-core, but the Incredible 2 has 768MB of RAM while the X2 has 512MB. They both came out at around the same time period as well. Wouldn't the dual-core/single-core processor make a bigger difference on performance with ICS versus the 256MB extra of RAM?
http://www.droid-life.com/2012/02/1...nd-rhyme-will-all-receive-ice-cream-sandwich/
If the Incredible 2 gets it and the X2 doesn't I'm going to be slightly frustrated on the matter.
Hmm, unlocked bootloaders on older phones as well as ICS?
HTC is where I'm headed next when it's time to upgrade this summer...
Well, unless memory management is a real mess on Android, I don't see why 512MBs of ram isn't enough. I ran WinXP for something like 2 years with 512 for 2 years and it ran smooth and fast. Then I added another 512 and to be honest, I couldn't tell the difference. The two OS's don't even compare when it comes to size and what needs to be loaded into ram.
Granted, the processor on the computer was twice as fast as the one on the X2, but I know people who ran XP just fine on the same amount of ram and a 1GHz single core processor. A bit slower than mine, but it ran fine. Perhaps I'm missing something. Don't know but it doesn't make sense to me.
its simple
Motorola has released so many freaking phones lately that they do not have the time/manpower to keep up with updating them so they are gonna pick their biggest sellers and update them.
the x2 was simply a flop seller for them.
between the D3 coming out close to it, and the buzz around the bionic at the time, along with all the returned devices because the damn phone can't even play music smoothly consistently, it just seems like they aren't to worried about the relatively "small" percentage of customers they will piss off either by taking WAY to long to update us, or just altogether snuffing us on the update...

Hence, that's why I'm going HTC for my next phone. They at least seem to give a crap about their customers whereas Motorola wants to saturate the market with as many new phones as possible, going completely against their promise not to do so.
Oh well, this is the same company that promised to unlock their bootloaders by the 4th quarter of 2011 and we all now how smooth and wonderful that went.
I know someone posted that he despised HTC because they didn't seem to last long , going bad in a few months due to hardware failures. Has anyone else noticed that before or even now? Just curious.

The HTC phone owners I know absolutely rave about their phones. I haven't heard about any hardware failures from them, and we talk about our phones frequently. So far, I've heard the best reviews on the Rezound. Which HTC are you considering?

Think that the massive amounts of phones being created and released will decrease now that Google has acquired Motorola? That maybe, just maybe, they'll focus on quality over quantity?

I had a tmobile htc g1 for like 3 years. That thing was indestructible, and i even had gingerbread on it when it finally died. It fell into water no less, not even a hardware failure. Since then iv had an Incredible, which was a tough cookie as well, and a thunderbolt after that. Any talk of failures bar the software bugs the Tbolt had in its release IMO are pretty few and far between. i know i had great luck with them, and had i not loved my droidx so much in the time i had it, i probably wouldnt have a dx2. i do miss my unlocked bootloaders, and 1.8ghz OC on my tbolt too bad the battery life was atrocious. Id say go for an htc next
I also have to think that HTC has hit upon something with their recent commentary about shifting from producing a lot of models of smartphone to producing a few very GOOD models of smartphone. I'm all for this, I don't see any reason why there should be 10 varieties of phone from a single vendor on a couple of carriers, you're just creating problems like what we're seeing from Motorola here.

In my past experience with HTC phones they didn't last long at all. I had a few crap out on me with hardware failure. But, that was a few years ago they may have better hardware now. Or I would really hope so anyways.

Every phone I've ever bought turned out to be crap and loose support within months. Next Time its either HTC or Samsung. I vowed not to get Motorola before I bought the X2 but bought it anyway. I love the phone but once again feel shafted.
Our company went with the origional incredible (10-15 phones) and didn't have many hardware issues that I'm aware of. Coverage was typical far as I could tell.
Me, I took a X back then and loved it till they killed it with GB. They offered me a few choices as a free replacement and I took the X2 thinking I had the docks etc for it.
At this point I'm not hesitating to jump ship from Moto, like alot have already said, to many phones pushed onto the market spreading the support for them way way to thin.

i wasn't impressed with my samsung. my fascinate seemed like it was forgotten the moment it was released. nice screen, though. my inc2 is three times the phone that was, and is currently running ICS with very few bugs, save for buggy camera. the biggest issue and gripe about htc is the audio. on the inc2, at least, the audio levels are low on custom roms unless tweaked in the kernel, due to the weird way they did the audio on this phone. i do like the phone, but for pure modding, i don't think you can beat a nexus. that may be my next device. i'd LOVE to see an HTC nexus.

Yep, the N1 (and its twin, the original Desire) is one of the best Android phones of all time.
I don't understand why you guys are complaining that X2 isn't getting ICS. I mean this phone came out in April or May11... There has only been 1 phone to even release with ICS since then and the next is still about a month out. By the time a ICS update would even hit for this phone, you would probably be a couple months from a upgrade anyway and a waaay better phone.
btw I had a HTC Incredible. Amazing phone and I abused the heck out of it on a physical and software level. Id go back to HTC in a heartbeat when their tegra 3 phone comes out.
I'mma be honest. I personally don't care if this phone gets ICS or not. I've toyed around with a nexus before and I still don't see what the big fuss over ICS is about. Sure ICS would be cool, but I wouldnt cry if I didn't get it lol.

but the fact remains
Motorola publicly stated/promised to give updates and support devices for 18 MONTHS AFTER RELEASE. our x2 is perfectly capable of handling ics, we SHOULD get it. if we don't I for one will chalk it up to Motorola being lazy, not trying hard enough,.and being greedy (many people WANT ics and by not updating x2 many people will go buy a new device)

All this talk about HTC and Sami phones being better and all. But put aside cool features and even usability cuz of an unlocked bootloader. Do they sound as good as a phone?
I thought the D3 was a better sounding but had to choose ours cuz of the Bluetooth tone that is forced on D3 users. Yet I never heard a phone sound as good as the original Droid.
Rant off.

Because of hardware acceleration. It offloads graphical processing from the CPU and places it where it belongs: on the GPU.
Better multitasking via a kernel rewrite to make the system smoother.
Those are the two biggies for me.
And, unless the X2 gets an ICS kernel, you won't see those two things.

Goodbye, Rezound!

Hey guys, so yesterday I made the switch to Sprint (it's waaay cheaper than VZW here..) and in return I got rid of my Rezound in exchange for the beautiful HTC One. I'm gonna miss all the talented developers here but I'm gonna miss Snuzzo's kernel and how helpful he is the most . It sucked selling my Rezound after having it for over a year and a half. I came from an iPhone to the Rezound, so everyone here made my first Android experience a great one. The reasoning behind it is because my Rezound's digitizer plug-in was messed up after replacing my screen twice, my front housing was peeling off from opening it, the vibrating motor was broke and the battery life was..well, we know our Rezounds and their batteries lol. I never post but I feel like I'm friends with everyone here just because this community is so nice and helpful. I'm gonna miss you all .
PS the One is amazing. I'm not as wowed as I was with my Rezound because I'm already familiar with Sense and Android, but it feels great in my hands and looks amazing.
I just bought a pair of Nexus 4s for the wife and I and switched to T-Mobile. This is definitely an awesome little dev community. Many thanks to all!

First; thank you for the kind words BOTH OF YOU. Good to see I helped you. Second; Who says I won't be doing anything on the Htc One?
I will definitely miss this community too! 3 days before I leave for basic training, my battery goes south and the earliest I can get a new battery is sometime on Tuesday...when I'll already be on a plane to Ft. Jackson. Bought a GS3 on CL, and I must say, the battery life is so phenomenal compared to the Rezound. 12+ hours compared to my average 4-6.
Will definitely miss the devs! I've been here since launch day in November 2011. My oh my how far development has come!!

Fact remains, the Rezound is still a great device, and other than the lemming-like desire to have the "latest and greatest" (for no other reason than the dread of feeling left out of the stampede), there's no real reason to switch from it.
BTW... how much better was that Nexus than your Rezound? (my wife has one for a company-issued phone, and it SUCKS compared to her Rezound)
I am thinking of getting an S4 to replace my Rezound and use the Rezound to replace my D1. That way I can still have the best of both worlds.

I liked my Nexus way better vs my Rezound. Battery life was better, call quality was great, no creaky back and no washed out colors like the LCD on the Rezound. I do admit that the display on the Rezound is more crisp. That and all AOSP roms atm on the Nexus are way smoother for now. The only reason I dropped the Nexus is cause the screens would keep crapping out on me. Once developement starts firing up for the S4 bye bye S3! Plus if you have the financial standing to buy a new device and have enough left over in your bank for rainy days why care? Spend your money on things you enjoy! Spoil your wife and kids! When you croak and have a nice life insurance policy they'll be set for some time.

Some of us have more disposable income vs others and that's just an unfair fact of life .
Again, even though I myself CAN AFFORD to get a new device. I've not had a reason to. I guess assets and a word call saving doesnt apply when you said "disposable". Just save the "disposable" income. May need it one day.
What I am saying is go for it, but don't fill my mouth with words. Again, jealous, heck no.

When we're talking about a devices that are hobbled by the inability to replace batteries when they go dead (planned obsolescence), or upgrade memory (thus forcing users into relying on cloud storage and higher data charges), then yes... it is a lesser intelligence issue. You're playing into the provider's hands, rather than calling your own shots. (OOOoooo.... look!! SHINY!!!)

I was never implying you were jealous. To each their own when it comes to what they do with their $$$. I just think freedoom is a **** when he is stating someone is of lesser intelligence for hopping on a newer device of their choice. I am directing the comment purely at him.

This is why I choose which shiny new device suits my needs before I buy it and drool. Plus I have unlimited data so idgaf about using cloud solutions . Some people don't care about swapping out batteries.. As most of them will already have a newer device before the battery goes bad. Lol you really think you're calling your own shots when you're contracted with a carrier? I rest my case.

Upcoming End of Life for the DNA?

Just looked for this device on Verizons website and it said "Available Online Only" meaning two things to me. One, they are selling through their stock. Two, something is coming around the corner, soon. Any speculation? I don't see a One in our future. Maybe another DNA variant?
There have been rumors of a "DNA 2," that's about all anyone knows.

Well I see myself with the DNA for a long while I love it!

With the moonshine S-OFF coming out, I see the DNA having a pretty long life in the "hardcore" smartphone user scene. It is a top of the line device, with fantastic hardware, and will be competitive for a while still, even with the ONE and speculated "DNA 2" coming out. At least, that is my guess.
EoL of the DNA at this point in time would be a bit weird.... it was release 11/2012 so idk how that would work out. There is already talks about the butterfly 2 and its said to be coming out in third qtr. As soon as that hits the market, we should see our next htc phone on verizon a month after or so.
Verizon may stop selling the device or whatever they choose. But after all the time I've referenced xda and came here I can pretty much guarantee that it is far from the eol on this and many other communities. And I highly doubt HTC will just drop it, I'm sure they saw what happened with Samsung and the s1s when they took forever to update anything.

It would be a shame if Verizon does this but I would think they would start those corney commercials showing the phone as 99.00 down with 2year agreement or something like that - today is my last day to return I think, so I have a lot to consider

Signed with the blood of my DNA
I absolutely love the device. I was with Sprint for nine years and finally broke down and switched. We, up until about 3-5 years ago didn't even have a Verizon presence in our state. They still even now only have about 10% of the market here so the LTE here is outstanding. Normally running 15-30 down and the same up. Enough of the history of Verizon in our state. I just picked this phone up several weeks ago when it had that Free coupon on the net. As I said I love the hardware and the software is meh, I would rather be running sense 5 on it, but for now, it is what it is, and with a custom launcher and a few miner tweaks it good for now. I had the very first Evo on Sprint and loved it for the short time I had it. After joining the rooting community though I purchased a Nexus S, followed by a Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7, Nexus 10, and a GS3 that was given to me. So I am very familiar with rooting devices and running custom everything on them. With my life story here now, my main concern is if they do end of life this phone there will not be any more devices going out so Verizon, HTC, and just the dev community will move on. Its a shame. This is a great phone. I have used the One extensively and there is little difference in the phones in the way that they run and I found it strange that everyone, or many people, in the community were pushing to see the One on Verizon. This is the One in many ways, and in several ways better. I think at this point Verizon is looking to ditch this device because of all the whoopla the One is causing and its sad. I don't plan on ditching this phone anytime in the near future either. Its just sad that this phone is so understated. Is it better than the One, no but awfully close. Is it better than the S4, in my personal opinion after spending a week with it, yes. Its definitely better than a good crop of the phones out now even with its age. I think until we hear of a new device to take its place Verizon would be smart to dump a smidge more money and re-advertise for this device dropping the price point to $150-99 on contract and breathe some life back into this device. When I went to switch over to Verizon, and I knew what I was there to get, the sales person mentioned at least three other devices that were no where near the quality of this device. So not only at the corporate level but the floor level this phone needs some love. I'm thinking its to late at this point but i am still glad I picked it up. I'm still happy with it as it is, although I am excited to get it rooted at some point, as this phone has huge potential. I'm not wanting to be the "glass is half empty" guy its just not looking promising at this point for our beloved DNA :'(
The HTC Thunderbolt got a full Android upgrade (2.3 to 4.0) over a year after Verizon stopped selling it, and the Droid Incredible got a maintainance update a few months back I believe. So even when Verizon stops selling it, it won't stop getting support for a while.
Look at what the rezound has pulled off, and in my opinion it was a great device, but nowhere near as nice as the DNA. EOL is as much a frame of mind as anything else in the development community and userbase. I still help out with rezound development and have some close friends and dev partners active so we spend a lot of sleepless nights working on software for users and tools for developers so they're able to offer more. I moved up to the DNA because I wanted too, but didn't leave the rezound behind. There's a lot of guys like me who tend to do that to help drive the spirit of android, and there's also guys who unlike me are true developers making things happen. The DNA is a really nice device and if the development and custom software minded community wants a device to thrive, it will thrive.

The first sign they wanted to phase out the DNA was the Free-with-2year promotion.
With the HTC One still completely unannounced on verizon (and all reps denying it vehemently), I'd have to guess that either HTC doesn't like how vzw handled their marketing or verizon made a yet-unannounced sweetheart deal with someone else. My money'd be on Samsung since verizon is really pimping their products.

Wow. I wonder if that means LATER this summer like August or sooner....?
I see a lot of DNA's coming up for sale soon.. Mine included !! Depends on the retail cost though..
Definitely got to voice my opinion on this. Had the rezound for a year and a half. For how much I used it, I needed an extended battery but overall. Great device and first really high resolution phone. I just got my DNA and love it. The rezound was lagging since the last update.
I think Verizon dropped the ball on the one. They are putting it out almost 5-6 months after its initial release. That's atrocious. As phone connoisseurs we all know something new will be out soon after that anyway.
I'm sticking with my DNA. I don't see the development dying down after moonshine is released. The one has some small upgrades (most are portable thanks to the people here). And screen size downgrade.
I'll wait for the next nice HTC device to upgrade.

Releasing so late after the other carriers is kind of a stupid move, but honestly if you have vzw and want the one, you're stuck waiting anyways. Or get the gs7 or whatever that Sammy brings out a month after that.

I don't see how its stupid. When the iPhone 4 released on Verizon, they had the fixed bezel around it vs atts 4

I only say its stupid, which is probably not the right word, but its because they're placing a phone out months after its alternate carrier releases, meaning it'll be an older device releasing against newer devices, seems to counter what is normally done, release newer devices against newer devices. I thought I made that point clear, but maybe not, the joke with the gs7 or whatever must not have been clear enough.
