No 2.1 upgrade for hero ...... - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

New Response From [ Pete (UK - Ireland Support (Tech)) ]
Hi Hywel, thanks for your email.
I understand this may be frustrating, but the 16th was never the release date. there were some 'leaks' on the internet, but those were incorrect, It was never planned for today at all.
The update will be available for everyone from the end of the month as planned. it will be phased out over a week or so to spread out the download demand, but it was certainly never going to appear today.
Best regards,
Pete W

Hi Where is the hero 2.1 upgrade for me to download?? It’s the 16th of April the day the upgrade is scheduled for release. If it’s not released today then when? If this is so then I can’t believe this delay as its been promised again and again !!!!!

They never said that ROM 2.1 will be released on 16th. I don't know where you get that.
1st they said they will release 2.1 ROM upgrades in March. When March came they said that due to some technical issues we have to wait till mid April for release.
So now it is mid April and some tech guy says it will be released at the end of the month. Guess what, at the end of month they will say that it will be released in mid May.
Did you get the game rules now ? They want as to buy their new Incredible phone!

The 16th was on a schedule that was leaked a moth or so ago.
But it should never have been believed anyway.

I think you didn't put enough exclamation marks in your original enquiry for them to take you seriously. And if I were you, I'd sue that guy who promised you update on April 16th again and again. Uh wait. Nobody promised that. Nevermind then.

Imagine having to man the email response section at HTC for the Hero with all the plums emailing you asking every 10 mins when the 2.1 update will be out!
I wonder how high the internal window jumper rate is... or forced handset in throat related deaths in the HTC office..

I also emailed them and they said the android 2.1 updates will be coming out starting at the end of april including for your HTC hero

I don't buy that as it makes little sense. It would hardly increase sales figures for the new devices at all. Most cellphone owners are locked into a contract which means if they want to upgrade before it's renewal time they have two choices.....wait, or pay over the odds to do so.....almost everyone (except die hard early adopters who are an extremely small percentage of owners) chooses the first option.
Then you have the fact that the newer handsets have better hardware and software, and all the ROM upgrades in the world won't change the hardware, so who in their right mind is going to choose an older phone knowing they'll have to mess about and upgrade it when they can just go get the shiny new model for free on another contract?
For all we (I) know, the delays could be due to more tweaks needed to make the ROM run at an acceptable level on handsets that have an inferior hardware spec than those that it was originally designed for.

the delays are mostly due because the htc servers couldnt possibly support all desire, hero and legend updates at the same time, thats why they are rolling ou the updates slowly, starting with the desire network providers, then the legend probably and finally the hero

I know this is not true as I and many of my friends are not on contracts (actually can only think of 1 who is) and prefer to buy outright as to upgrade as we see fit, and change service provider too. But I do agree with your point, it would not be a way to increase sales, more likely just internal bureaucracy is the cause for the set back.
Seriously people, there's a little thing called patience. My mother always told me that good things come to those who wait.

HTC S420 Release Date - May 16th, 2007

Oh the glory and the smell of a new phone. As I posted a few weeks ago, the HTC S420 is coming. This is the follow on to the StarTrek and I must say, with some nice feature upgrades. We know, there is NO WiFi, but I am willing to sacrifice sleekness for a few things. Did we already mention that it will have WM6, 400Mhz CPU, GPS Receiver, Quad-Band, FM Radio, UMTS, and a 2.0 mega-pixel camera. Oh yea!!
So gentlemen and ladies, get your Credit Cards warmed up because supposedly we have a RTS/Release date of May 16th, 2007.
Here are some sites that are taking pre-orders. Click here to see some Froogle ads. (I in no way endorse these sites) Matter of fact I prefer the good ol' eBay way or MobilePlanet myself.
And yes...The initial sticker price is high but just give it a few weeks and your carriers should have them in stock.
Enjoy -

Thanks for the info. This is the first time I read something about a release date of this little beauty.
In Denmark??
Hi.. Do you think that this phone is gonna be on the marked in may, in Denmark to??
Would be great
hmm ive only seen a mock up CGI type pic of the unit not an actual live photo, any around?
Today it's the 18th. No news on it so far on the Net. I hope it will be released soon, though I do not excpect it before june. We'll see.
I hoping we at least see it in June. No one has yet seen a pre-production/release model yet which usually crops up first. I checked with Haider at SMG and he has no word. There are a couple of folks who have the pre-production S630s so we will probably see that released first. Dopod has also announced their version of. As of yet, I have seen no official announcements on the erato.
I need it the HTC S420
if there not even an in the wild tru pic knocking around the net ,then i doubt we are anywere near getting it myself

I was hoping it would be out...and that the Bluetooth to Uconnect would sound better (my main complaint about the StarTrek)

HTC S420 (also known as Erato) has been canceled.
HTC announced it on 29. May. They cancel releasing and doesnt start to produce the smartphone.
That sucks but would not be totally unexpected.
Can you give us the link to the press release since it's not (yet) on one of the HTC sites?

I find that weird that they are canceling a great phone but you never know. I did call the HTC Bellevue office and they knew nothing of a cancellation. I will email the Taiwanese location and see if there have been any developments. You never know.
Just do clarify, Froogle and PDAdb.net has the phone still coming in July now.

Well, that's just what sunnysoft said. And after all the crap they posted (i.e. Qtek 8500 has miniUSB, selling extUSB>JACK as microUSB>JACK,............), who will believe to what they said? They also said that Treo 750 will never be shipped to Europe
Another info from simon211175 at modaco (his post)
Last week I emailed HTC europe to find out if the StrTrk/Qtek 8500 was going to be given the WM6 facelift. When they said (in vague terms) "no", I asked when its successor (S420/Erato) will be out.
The reply was "The release date for the HTC 420 is expected to be in July 2007"
I know this probably means September at the earliest, but it's a start.

Now I am a bit confused but this message may be few days older...
Well, so far the Czech Sunnysoft site is the only one claiming the Erato is cancelled. No other site confirming it or confirmation from HTC. So, let's cross fingers for a July release

New Official ROM release 2/15?

Hey I don't normally post on here, I have been over at ppcgeeks for over a year now and thought everyone would like to read this. Hopefully its true.
"Read this before you start flaming....
So, recognizing that it is definately NOT early Q1 2008 anymore, I decided to go on an info seeking quest with Sprint Customer Service. After about 45 minutes of being put on hold...transfered twice...some social engineering....I finally got transfered to a device engineer. Mind you, this was not any type of customer service rep or tech support guy. This was an engineer who actually worked on it.
He confirmed, and very quickly I might add (didn't need to look anything up....he immediately knew the answer), that the update we all DESPERATELY want will come out this Friday, February 15th. I said to him, "This Friday? That's a strange day. You guys usually release on Mondays." He replied, "Yes, it is an unusual day. We are releasing it on Friday because it's already late to market."
I think this is pretty credible info. He backed it up with admission of a strange release day and the fact that it's late.
Now, bring it on Naysayers...."

I'm pretty sure this is the tenth "for sure" release date we've heard.
Well, I was on hold with Sprint for almost 45 minutes and was told that the new update was coming out on Friday. He couldn't give me any details other than that. Sounds promising, but I'm not going to hold my breath!

I know, but I am just hoping that Sprint will follow through on one of them. At least by default.
here is why I wouldn't believe this...(and I'm not flaming the poster here just pointing out some inconsistencies...)
1 - If it was actually done and what he said was true they would have released it as soon as it was officially DONE...for the same reasons he said it would be released on a friday...It's Late...Why delay till friday if it is complete?
2 - Sorint isn't the one actually working on this release...HTC is! All Sprint might do is integrate it into a ROM for their phones but HTC was the one actually working on the radio. Maybe the radio is done and Spint has it but again if they had it why wait till friday to release it?
Only reason to wait on a release is for testing purposes...
And if that is true then they could just as easily find a problem and delay again...
No matter what the truth is, It will be done when it's done! We have DCD's ROMs to work with for now. And even if Sprint does release Friday it will take a day or two before guys like DCD and No2Chem extract the stable radio in it and cook up some Roms for everyone else.
The only thing I know thats happening on Friday for Sprint is that my neighbor and good friend maybe out of a job, Sprint is going through a MASSIVE restructuring and layoff. His support area is going from 15 cell site techs to 7.... Sprints got real issues other than slow ROM updates

You'd be surprised. I used to work for a company (will let the company rename nameless) that did all the picturemail testing and QA for sprint phones and when we would get new firmware and everything was QAed and done and certified for release the firmware was not "immediately" released. They ALWAYS set a date a for real production but would have it in "production" for a week or so with the sprint people to make sure everything worked fine.
why dont they just mail the files to dcd or colonel and let them do it for em? seems like something would actually get done and done right.

I'll check with my friend who leaked me the early testing version with GPS and RevA
I'm sure he's reliable
I am just confused why the release will be Friday. Usually they release Monday just in case there are any issues they have tech support on hand M-F to fix the issues. I am talking even the basic issues with a good rom. Plus everyone knows the techs do not set the release data. Upper Management sets the release date once they feel like it is in control. Just my opinion.
they cant tech their way out of a wet paper sack anyway. the devs in here are far better support than any pin head at sprint will ever be. Ill wait for the xda gurus and the ppc guys (if they get their site working right) to put thier heads together and build a screamin rom for us all

Are you stupid or something? Do you really think any carrier makes thier own ROM? HTC does all of it, every little bit, and then carriers bug test and HTC sends them another. Why do people think carriers make phones or software? All they make is a network.

Oh no... and carefull tossing around accusations of "stupidity"... You've already touched upon testing, but also often either in house or contracted out development is done for carrier specific applications and configurations for the carriers' released ROMs.

HTC is currently developing a separate ROM update which enables the EV-DO Rev. A and GPS capabilities that are already built into the Mogul hardware. Sprint and HTC plan to make this software ROM available in early 1Q 2008. Please bookmark this page for easy reference.
why is this something we are supposed to get excited about? we've had it for weeks

I think a lot of people are hoping for a less flaky radio in the official version (that doesn't randomly drop the data connection). Really that's about it I think.

Well my point was until their final testing is complete you can't really be sure they have a stable release at all...
they may have set Friday as the release date so they could test but that friday is just another deadline that could be missed if they find some issue between now and then...
So you can't really say it is READY unless you have already done all your testing and if you haven't then it is not actually ready yet...
In either case something said is not really fact! Either it was tested and ready so why not release...Or it is being tested until friday to see if it is good and therefore NOT READY yet...
Thats all I was trying to get across.

Official ICS update is coming!

Good news for everyone, as long as you read this forum you have the same dream of Photon 4G getting an update to ICS.
Well the official report is at Android Central, go ahead and check it out. I cant post url yet sorry, trust me you wont regret it.
Says rolling out in Q3, thats going to seem like forever.
Before the official rollout we would have a rather solid or even official cm9. not excited at all. And Q3, yes it seems like forever...

Q3 is very far. Should be available Q2 at the very latest.
It makes me wonder just how big the development staffs at the developers are. Especially since the devices are very similar and we are getting a CM9 port, which is ICS, in developer spare time.
Q3 is light years away.
I imagine Sprint will have some other compelling ICS phones well before then.

Haha not as much as it should be. Have you looked at the total number of phones Motorola supports? There is like a gazillion phones. What all manufacturers need to do is limit the amount of phones they produce in such a short period. There is no need to make a Droid Razr when a Droid RAZR MAXX beats the Droid RAZR in every way and has a huge ass battery that can lasts for a long time on 4G LTE.
Basically Motorola is killing their own product by producing a product that is way better 2 months later which is bad business. Motorola should have just released just the RAZR MAXX and not waste any money and resources on a useless RAZR.
Same goes for Samsung and their Galaxy S II lines. AT&T first came out with the SGSII in Oct 2011, then a month later a SGSII Skyrocket with LTE in Nov 2011 and then finally a SGSII HD coming out in April 2012. Why need 3 variants of the same model? To me its just a waste of resources and money.
I just saw this @ Facebook

Now that the government has approved of the Motorola Mobility sale to Google, it is time for Google to shape up Motorola and tell them to stop releasing so many damn devices.
After reading the article below about a Moto exec blaming Google for slow Android updates because of the hardware, it got me thinking that part of the blame has to be on Google and not just the manufacturers.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-30686_3-5...exec-blames-slow-android-updates-on-hardware/
What Google needs to do in future releases is to provide the next Android code base to more than one chipset that is used for the flagship phone and provide the code to the Android partners months in advance. There should be Android code on a TI OMAP chip set, Qualcomm chipset and Nvidia Tegra chipset so that development can go faster. It is ridiculous to have to wait a year for an upgrade that should take longer than 3-4 months.

why should google be held to that standard? microsoft doesnt have to make drivers for all the motherboard, graphics cards etc... if that company wants to make a device thats got different hardware and design then its up to them to make sure its up to snuff.

Please, look at the phones they had available before? Lets not mention WiMax! The business model at Sprint is lay back and hide and don't take risk so we don't loose are jobs!! And the funny thing is, Sprint has more money than the other 3 cullular carries COMBINED, they can afford to take risk!!!
If you want, I can tell you about Sprints money!!!! (Or you can just go to the FTC and read about the ENTIRE nextel merger!)

Clearley most of the "motoxperts" does not have any clue about what they are talking about. I emailed Motorola a couple days ago and they said it was still planned to be released Q2 and AFAIk the soak testers have got their emails.

And Europe is still Q2
Don't belive those son of *****es in the motoxpert. When Motorola announce officialy that the update is delayed then we will start the war!
I have emailed them again
On Polish Motorola Facebook page they also announced that ICS will be delayed for Europe:
"We've got official information for all waiting for software upgrade for RAZR and RAZR MAXX. The update will be delayed and we are not able to provide it to the end of the June as we planned. We are sorry. We are working on software changes which must be made to provide our users the best ICS new functions experience. We will keep you posted when we'll get confirmed ICS rollout date."
*Sorry for my english, I did quick translate

My EU unbranded ICS rooted leak works perfect, so I don't mind waiting really.
It's business as usual at motorola giving the US customers their bloated verizon crap first tho.

Link to the leak mate?
So let alone they tend to the stupid Bloatware Verizon version first, they also managed to **** up something that was working all along.
Theres ICS for the HP Touchpad which was ported by fans, but a company such as Motorola can't even release it for their own phone on time. Amateurs. >_>
So much for moto being a top brand. This is the same story that has been plaguing their devices for a number of years now. Ill stick with my razr for now on official miui but i'll get rid later in the year.
Disappointed.

Motorola = most lousy company ever! This is no impulsive statement because I've said all the time "if they can't deliver it in Q2, they lose all my respect and I'll never buy a motorola again" Well, now is the time, never again a moto!
One of the first rules in business I've learned, never disappoint your customer and think very very carefully before publishing a deadline / release date. Inform yourself very good. Especially when you have the worst reputation.
I thought, they can't be that stupid and the razr and its ics update are so much anticipated they can't afford it to their selves to ruin it again... But... they did!!
Congratulations to everyone at motorola involved in marketing, service&support and product updates.
I'm not surprised..
But I will eat them alive.

Wow, it looks like some people need some more interesting things in their lives to focus more attention on rather than a free software update for a cell phone.

Yup, Motorola Europe stated on their facebook:
For those asking for information about the ICS upgrade for RAZR and RAZR MAXX, we have had a delay which means we’re unable to roll out in Q2 as planned. We’re working through the changes that need to be made to the software to ensure you get the best experience from all the new features ICS will bring. We will update you when we have further details on a new roll out.

Now let's just hope they won't stretch it to end of Q3, like the last promise...
Although I am a bit disapointed, I'm not going leave motorola just over this. I've had the same stuff when I had a samsung (i7500) and a HTC (Desire HD), so all companies do it. Well, or I should get a Nexus next time...

I still have hope for kholk's kexec. If he manage to fix it I really dont care about moto updates anymore
All the brands have similar problems... I've owned HTC, Sony, Motorola and some more and I had update delays with all of them... except for an Archos tablet I had, that was updated to any android version really quick... but then it was plagued of bugs and they had to release a bugfix patch every week.. XDD I don't know what I prefer...
Cheers
I know what I prefer... Communication from Motorola, because I don't believe for a second this is something they came up with 3 days before the deadline. They knew it would not be released in Q2 but they lacked to communicate that, but more important they kept saying that it would be released in Q2 till today... again 3 days before deadline.
I wonder if we could take legal actions against that..
Mind it has nothing to do with a 'free' release of any update it has to do with the expectations buyers had of the phone with the promise of ICS in Q1 at first and Q2 later. I think allot of buyers would not have bought the phone if they knew what they know now, then again I would.
I am not too worried. Still a great phone. I have had much bigger issues with htc one x wifi problems.. a hardware fault. Oh and the nokia e6, many software issues. This phone still does a great job!

It is a question not a statement.

Motorola's response about ICS

I called Motorola this morning regarding ICS spoke to them for a while got transfered etc, anyways the lady I spoke to last said the update did not get cancelled however for all I know she could have just told me that so I would shut up. She did also say she sent out a message to the delevopers regarding my concern. I told her about how Im not the only one with this issue and how theres more of us that have been waiting and we are about to give up hope. Do me a favor call them up 1-800-734-5870 lets jam their lines with our concern and HOPEFULLY they will actually start taking care of their customers.
I sent this email on the support page. I don't know if it will help any, but I guess it's worth a shot.
To Whom It May Concern,
My name is xxxxxxxxxx. I am a xx year old college student in xxxxxxx. My whole family (myself, my mother and father, and my sister) are on the same plan with Sprint. When our contract was up for renewal in the spring of 2012, I was the one who did all the research on phones for all of us to upgrade to. I extensively researched all of the options that Sprint offered at the time.
The biggest criterion that needed to be met was that the phone would be upgraded to Android 4.0 at least eventually. I wound up narrowing it down to the two options of the Motorola Photon 4g and the Samsung Epic 4g touch. When we got to the store to physically see the phones, I was still on the fence. What ended up tipping me over to the Photon side was the Sprint employees. The employees at Sprint recommended the Photon and my whole family decided to go with this phone. The phone is an excellent piece of technology and I have not regretted this decision in most regards.
I have, however, regretted the decision in one big way. Today I read the XDA Developers forums for the Photon 4g and was informed that the Photon was not going to get an upgrade. And I would like to make it known that this is NOT acceptable.
My family and I bought this phone on the premise that it would be getting Android 4.0. Were it not for this promise that was made by YOU, Motorola Mobility, this phone would not have even been in contention, and you would have lost out on a sale of 4 phones. But, as it was, the phone was to be updated to ICS.
But you reneged on that promise today. It turns out you lied to the masses and likely got many people to buy your phones because they met the criterion of an upgrade to ICS. You didn't deliver a full product.
Consider the following scenario: You buy a new car. This new car includes a wonderful warranty that protects you of any manufacturer defects for a certain period of time. A month after you drive the car off the lot, it breaks down and you need that warranty. But the company refuses to pay for your car to be fixed. The company did not deliver a full product that included all the promises made about it. This would NEVER be acceptable. But yet, it is somehow acceptable for you to go back on your promise to upgrade our phones to ICS.
There is still a large community of people who use the Photon 4G and are loyal to the phone. They all want ICS. But it's not coming.
In the future, my family and I will take these empty promises into consideration when getting new phones. It will certainly negatively affect the chances of us EVER purchasing a Motorola phone again.
Thanks,
xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Hello friends!
This really sucks!!
6 months before, when I've bought Photon, Motorola officially stated that "Motorola Photon MB855 will get ICS update in Q3 2012", few months later they wrote that "ICS update will be ready in Q4", and now they simply cancelled rollout!
What kind of liars they are??
This is not just UNFAIR, this is FRAUD!
I've waited for so long, and now they say that I'm a fool!! And not me, also lots of people who use Photons and Atrixes!!
Dammit!
What can we do??

Don't replace the photon with another Motorola when you upgrade.
I can't tell you how disappointed I am as well. And that's me being incredibly charitable.

Well, I am VERY disappointed!!
Cause I've bought Atrix HD - used for a 5 minutes and... sold it out! Cause it badly lays in hand. And Photon. Photon is just perfect,
it's kickstand is magnificent not only to put it on table, but also to safely hold it in a hand.
****, how can phone, which was released only a year ago, already abandoned??
I have idea - we should write to Motorola Mobility support that cancelling ICS update is fraudulent,
and tell em to give us at least ICS tegra2 drivers for our developers!!

I'd be happy with them unlocking bootloaders but not breaking 4G -- then we can use a community ROM or perhaps CM10 or... You get the point though.
This sucks. I'm stuck with this POS phone that won't get upgraded because the insurance company didn't have any more of my Nexus S4g in stock. My S4g was an older phone and still got JB. How the hell can they expect people to continue to buy their products when they just throw the owner's under the bus.
I see a huge lawsuit happening

It was EOL'd six months after it was released. Not happy with it but we were lucky to get any updates after January.

its going to be difficult to do a class action lawsuit in the U.S. due to limits imposed by the Supreme Court. That was really one of the few ways of litigation to get the attention of companies. Its just too expensive for an individual consumer to take on a large company in anything other than small claims court.
On the other-hand, having Motorola defend a couple thousand small claims cases (some of which cannot be done by attorneys) will quickly become more expensive for them than the original ICS rollout.
It would be difficult to show that MM broke any contract by not providing ICS (dont think there are any guarantees for a software update), but it should be easy to prove that they materially harmed consumers with the 2.3.5 update from 2.3.4 that locked bootloaders.

F'ing this, so hard. I'm talking Long Dong Silver on a t-shirt of blow hard. I'm talking Stallone in Rambo hard. I'm talking Hard Knock Life Volume 1, 2 and 3. I'm talking Hard. I hate Motorola, and I hope someone farts in the office and its unbearable.
It would need to be approached by the State Attorney General's offices...with the position that in 2010 Moto Mob committed to upgrades as part of the Android Upgrade Alliance...and thereby profited from consumer's based on the public affirmation & marketing that Moto was committed to upgrade the devices they sold during that time.
Since the AG often acts to protect their states constituents...that would put a whole heap of pressure on Moto. Besides some major news outlet picking up the story, that's about our only shot...
Didnt google state that all android devices get updates including operating system updates for 2 yrs or did i miss read that?

Try and find any official word on the Android Upgrade Alliance. I looked for two hours and found nothing after the Google I/O announcement.
That doesnt surprise me

http://googleblog.blogspot.de/2011/05/android-momentum-mobile-and-more-at.html
"So today we’re announcing that a founding team of industry leaders, including many from the Open Handset Alliance, are working together to adopt guidelines for how quickly devices are updated after a new platform release, and also for how long they will continue to be updated. The founding partners are Verizon, HTC, Samsung, Sprint, Sony Ericsson, LG, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Motorola and AT&T, and we welcome others to join us. To start, we're jointly announcing that new devices from participating partners will receive the latest Android platform upgrades for 18 months after the device is first released, as long as the hardware allows...and that's just the beginning. Stay tuned for more details."
As you can see the official google blog post is May 10, 2011.
Photon was officially released July 31, 2011 and thus would have qualified as a "new device" at the time of the May 10, 2011 official blogpost.
Other than the I/O announcement and press release you linked there's nothing from any of the "Update Alliance" partners after that. Find anything dated 2012.
after the I/O I dont think it was officially mentioned again.
Note how they say they'll do it if the "hardware allows." We know it will work but they'll use that as some copout!
If MOTO is reading about our rage on no ICS, they will count how many people are disappointed. Based on the number of reply in multiple threads here, it appears only few of us are fuming.
In the age of twitter, facebook and google+, we should be able to force Moto to treat the customers with respect and atleast keep their promise !
but .. numbers count.
