running a ROM from the SD - Droid Eris General

is there anyway possible? WinMo phones have hether where they can run android (and even ubuntu!) from the sd card, and I was wondering if there was a way to run an eris ROM from an SD card.
this way, we can try out new roms without fully wiping and installing, nd depending on how it works, we could also get other OS's in the mix (winmo, linux, etc)

not yet, and chances are there wont ever be a way to do that. just do a nand backup, flash the rom, if you dont like it, wipe, then restore backup. its really not that difficult. in a weeks time, i think i have flashed my phone a dozen times, or more.

well that's lame. if I was more proficient in linux/android apps I'd get right on it, i know so little of this area.

It could technically be done, I suppose. Its super easy to nand backup your phone and flash though.

Question for people hooked to flashing ROMs

So I am finally getting a grasp and this whole ROM cooking thing. Now that I am going to be making a couple of different ROMs what do the end users prefer? More storage space so you can load up your programs? Programs already cooked in? Do you care for the new X9 method when typing or do you prefer the older style like what the Kaiser had?
Just trying to get some input to see what everyone likes and find a good mix.
Actually, the reason why we have so many people making different ROMs, is because we like variation. If we only liked one thing, we would most likely have only one ROM, gradually getting better and better and more and more optimized to what we like.
Load it up
I like 'em loaded. Especially with the latest versions. There's so much storage space why not.
For me, I love it loaded up, all current versions, ports from other devices. This device has plenty of memory, My favorite Rom now is Elite rc2 because of all the varieties of software on there and its ability to do everything I need. Now, when I packed a Kaiser I had trouble with memory i always had to sacrifice one program for the other. But the touch pro, no problem at all.
You guys just have the ROM files ready for a hard reset, correct?
Meaning, theres no way to install multiple and switch between them... correct?

Multiple roms?
I think he's asking if there's a way to have multiple ROM's loaded on the phone, and switch between them, like dual booting a windows pc..
And, actually, that's technically possible, but it's more of a headache than I would want to try hacking together..
The closest you can get is keeping multiple ROM images on your SD card, and renaming one of them to RAPHIMG.NBH then loading up the bootloader to flash it.. that way you can flash roms 'on the road' so to speak..

Although that would be quite a pain too
1. PIM Backup
2. Install new rom
3. Customization + UC install
4. PIM Restore
It would be cool if we could dualboot, but none the less, useless. We don't need dual boot unless it's a different operating system.

What is the best way to backup my Gtab before modding?

Hi,
I am new to Android and the Gtab. I am basically curious as to what the best way is to backup my Gtab. What software and the steps to take (what is the difference between cwm and nvflash?).
I actually like the stock rom but my biggest frustration is the lack of the market which I would like to have. Having that said, I would like to run something different on the Gtab which will support the market app and not the Gmarket app. I looked around the forums and I see lots of good tutorials but it confuses me on how I backup with my stock rom before I begin any of the tutorials to upgrade to a new rom. I feel like backing up is the biggest step and don't want to mess this up so that I can revert back if I do make a mistake down the road. I'm sure once you do this a couple of times it starts to make sense but I have not done it yet and want to make sure I understand everything before I move forward.
I am a beginner but want to be able to get more out of my Gtab. Please help.
It needs to be modded right out of the box, so how much could you have possibly gotten installed?
Ok, I'm kidding.
What are you trying to "backup"? If it's DOC's and Books, music, etc, either dump it all onto a secondary memory card, or dump your data to a PC using usb connection. As for settings like email, etc. I say skip the backup and just reinstall the stuff.
I keep all of the working installers I've found on my external SD card so if I need to wipe & start over, I just go through and click/install them again.

Hi,
Thanks for the post. I think I may have not worded my question right. My fault since I am new. What I mean is what do I need to do to backup my current OS I suppose. For instance, it has android 2.2 correct? I upgraded OOTB to firmware 3588 which works well but no market. What do I need to do to back this OS up so that I can revert back to it in case of any problems? Sorry if I am still confusing you guys but like I said earlier, I am completely new and still learning the phraseology and such. Thanks!
jetguy35,
Most people get Titanium Backup and backup the apps and system with a batch file in that.
That takes care of apps.
If the whole tablet gets messed up you either NVFlash back to the bekit 1105 version
per the NVFlash recovery thread in developers, if its not too bad you reinstall the
current 3588 version from a download.
There are other ways some people suggest, but I don't recommend what I haven't used and don't know about.
Good Luck!!!
Rev
An app called Titanium Backup will allow you to back up your apps and their data.
To do a complete system backup, you'll need to get clockworkmod installed (bekit .8 version), once booted into clockworkmod there is a back up option which will back up all system files and apps.
Check this thread in the development section for installing clockworkmod:
[Sticky][Guide]Install ClockworkMod, A ROM, Flash Player, and the Market Fix
Insall clockwork mod .8 and boot to recovery and backup entire rom. ..then save a copy from internal to external sd card in case you need it.
Sent from my VEGAn-TAB-v1.0.0b5.1.1 using Tapatalk
personally (and I was in your shoes last week)
I would just go through the TNT Lite post and flash that ROM onto the tablet. If you go TNT 4.4.0 you DO NOT WANT CLOCKWORK.
It's really simple - plug in USB, copy the correct files to the tablet, push and hold pwr-volume up and give it a couple minutes.
I think the vanilla ROM is floating around so if you don't have a bunch of personalized files, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Anytime you flash it, you are going to have to add some of the programs back in anyway.
Roebeets TnT build is super fast and super stable. You won't know what hit you when you turn it on the first time.
bnovak,
That's a good idea, but not everyone is ready, or has the expertise or even wants
to move up to a ROM.
I have two tablets and one is running the experimental next generation TwoTabX ROM
that is on hold waiting for VS to do something -- and the other most of the time is
pure stock (so I can test stuff and get OTA updates etc.
When I go to work, doesn't matter which I take because both work well.
Stock is not bad!!! You should have seen the original software!!!

[Q] Best practice for doing nandroid restores?

I've been using Joker Rev1, Rocko2.3 and CM7.2 roms lately. Once CM9 gets to beta, I'll probably add that to my mix as well.
It seems like the easiest way to move back and forth between the roms is to restore from nandroid backups. Is this the best way to move between roms?
My understanding is that when I do a restore, it replaces everything to the way it was at the time of the backup. Is that correct? Or should I wipe and/or format anything prior to the restore? Everything has been working so far, but I'm worried about the possibility of leaving artifacts when changing roms this way that might eventually have a negative effect... Do I need to worry about that?
You should do a full wipe. A nand restore will put back everything that needs to be put back. When you don't do a complete wipe, you could be leaving things behind.
There are also some people out there writing programs for "dual booting" two different roms. You can try searching for one that would work on the MoPho.

Encryption?

So I've done a search of the Rezound threads for info on encryption and came up empty. Google wasn't much of a help either. I work where there's a good chance my phone may come up missing or lost and at times I may have some sensitive work related material on it which I don't care for everyone to see. Has anyone out there actually encrypted their phone and SD card and been successful? And has anyone done it with a ROM installed? I'm running Vigor360 and would like to know if the encryption actually works before I brick my phone when it fails in the process. Would I just be better off encrypting a container on the SD card and not worry about the phone itself? Thanks.
CM9 has built in encryption, in the security tab of the settings app.

Broken in CM9. Chad was going to take a look.
I'm required to encrypt my internal storage for work; I've never tried the external SD card. I can't recall if I ever tried to encrypt Neo's Rage while I was running it, but I've been able to encrypt most Sense ROMs I've tried. Both of Nils' Business Sense ROMs worked fine as did ViperROM and EclipticRez. I've forgotten what else I've tried; I know I downloaded Vigor360, but I didn't run it long enough for a full test run. I did not have great success on heavily de-sensed ROMs.
There are a few gotchas once encrypted though. Amon Ra can't read the encrypted partition to perform a full wipe or a dalvik-cache wipe. When swapping kernels or anything needing to wipe Dalvik-cache, I do so from a terminal session in the phone first and then boot to recovery to wipe cache and flash the object. This also presents a problem when I want to swap ROMs as I need to re-flash the RUU (I'm running the global leak) to get back to a phone that can be fully wiped and have a new ROM installed. It adds a few minutes to my process when I want to play around, but I've gotten used to it. I take my nandroids just prior to encrypting, but I've never used them as I prefer Titanium Backup and Nova's built-in backup for the launcher settings.
I'm S-On, HTC dev unlocked if that makes a difference to you. My main concern about encrypting your external SD card would be the need for Amon Ra to access it. I keep ROMs, music and backups on the external card with the work stuff on the internal which satisfies the policies with my employer.
I hope this helps.

[Q] Another, "I'm new to the NT" thread...

First off, thanks to all the devs for making this NT awesome...(and other devices, of course) Just want to get that out of the way. :good: :highfive:
I just got the NT from a 1saleaday deal for really cheap a month or so ago, knowing the dev community has made it awesome. And now, I'm getting around to opening the box, and before i set it up, i turned it off, to do some good ol' XDA research. And, oh boy, I've read a lot.... And, I'm seeing this NT being a new beast. Almost overwhelming...
And before i ask a few questions, just want to mention I've had 5+ android phones with TONs of flashing and modding done to them. I normally don't have any issue, and never ask questions, always research and contribute...
SO, with that said: Normally with android phones, What I'm used to is: Root, flash recovery, flash rom, bam, new hawtness. It's usually a simple process, to me... This NT seems to have a lot more to it...
Now my main question is: Do i really need to use an SD card to flash a recovery and CM10.1? I havn't even set this thing up, (let alone care about what is on it...lol) Is there a way i can just use the root methods found on the forum transfer the files to the NT, flash a recovery, and in that recovery flash a rom, all on just the internal memory? (I guess there needs to be partitioning as well... Where would that come in? Probably before the rom flash...) Or does the BN software/bootloader make this difficult on the NT?
I guess I'm looking for just a run down for my situation, where i don't need a backup of the BN software or anything on the tablet, because i just want a sweet tablet with CM10... :fingers-crossed:
Thanks a ton for looking!

Congrats on your NT.
Now to your question,
No, you do not have to use the SD recovery method, but its really safe to keep a bootable recovery, that doesn't need any key persses or prompt to enter recovery.
Also having a bootable recovery , you can bypass the stock rooting, recovery flashing etc and directly get to flashing rom. So I'd suggest this. Even a 1gb (or maybe even smaller card) will do.
I personally feel partitioning is unnecessary.

Maybe you can do it another way, but WHY?????
That's what makes the NT so "mod-friendly": that you can do so much via sd-card.
If you want to repartition and the BN partitioning scheme (8 GB user space) is OK for you but you don't have store nearby, burn "repart.img" to sd and run it before rooting.
Burn another image and use that for rooting and flashing an updated recovery.
Start up to that updated recovery and flash your ROM.
Easy peasy!
First off, thanks for the responses. Last night i hit the NT head on, and am a proud owner of a NT w/ CM10.1  I'm REALLY impressed with how it runs 4.2.1. It pretty equal to my Nexus 7 (Hisssss lol..)

Haha, I guess I'm just used to all my Nexus gear thats had no SD card slots, using an SD card is just awkward now. I had to end up pulling out my old netbook to image the cards, lol. But all is good on the NT now. I put CWM6 on the eMMC, and flashed CM10.1, couldn't be happier. It was stable enough, I ended up setting it up for the Girlfriend and calling it her Christmas gift. Smoooth.. lol.
Glad you got it set up! And yes, CM10 is so smooooth running on these babies!!
