[REQ] Auto brightness on/backlight off widget - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have been searching for an widget that will simply turn auto brightness to on or if I press it again will turn backlight completely off but I haven't found it.
There is already similar widget but it also sets backlight to max, which is really annoying to me!
Why I need this?
Whenever I turn on my Desire during night backlight is too strong for me when set to auto, so that is why I need this simple widget that will turn auto backlight on or on another press will simple turn backlight off

+1 for this.
I can't see a way to do it in AnyCut either. If anyone has been successful please let me know

Bump!
Anybody has little time to make this widget?

Now that the Power Control widget in Froyo includes auto-brightness in its cycle of brightnesses, is the apk floating around? Would be a nice addition for the po'folk who don't have (and probably won't get) Froyo.

Brightness Profiles
I got this app a couple of days ago... i think its just what you're looking for, its called Brightness Profiles.
you can either search it on android market or scan the QR code I've attached. hopefully it works:

Mippin Apps
Check out the Dimmer app from Mippin. They made a battery widget with quick toggles for gps/wifi/bt/display but this dimmer turns it down to 10(20 less than standard 0* of display settings). If you're looking for an automated time scheduler, check out timeriffic.

Thanks for suggesting Timeriffic. It doesn't do exactly what the OP requested but if the need is time based control of brightness it does a great job.
I have seen a huge battery savings with managing brightness carefully throughout the day. Is by far the number 1 cause of battery drain.

Brightness app

Any working brightness apps? All of them on the market lower (or rise) the brightness, but just temporarily. The brightness returns to it's prevoius value on app exit or on sleep-resume (depends on the app). On my my diamond with the ported eclair (android 2.0) such apps worked like a charm, but on the tattoo... I don't get it..
Any suggestions?
Why dont you use the android power control widget? The last icon controls the brigtness.
Android power control widget forgets the brightness setting on suspend-resume. If i set it to the lowest setting, put the device to sleep, and then wake it back up, the brightness is the same as before setting it to the lowest. Do you also get this same behaviour? If not, it's time to remove some "brightness apps"
Never noticed this but you are right. When it goes to sleep, the brightness is back to default upon waking it up.
Bad! any widget or app to control brightness is not working with Tattoo. May be a bug in Tattoo...
Might be, that a working Tattoo brightness widget will be my first android development project Might be...If i find the time..
Ahh! at last I see the light..a hope... I am waiting for your app
Well, i have a lot to do in school now... it's the "exam season", but i'll get on it as soon as i can.

A brightness "Toggle" recommendation?

Hi
I'm looking for a widget or application that will let me toggle between two -custom- levels of brightness at a simple touch.
There are some ones in Market, but until now I did'n found any one that let me customize my level.
I would like to toggle between 10% and 50%.
Any one that works like this in the Optimus?
Brightness Level from CurveFish. It's in the Market.

Thanks .... but, ... this one does not allow me to set a "custom" brightness (unless I missing something). It just have 0%, (too low), 25% (too much for my "low level" need), 50%, 75% and 100% plus Auto.
I would like something that let me set 10% or 15% as a low level and something around 60% as high level.
Ok, got something very close of my needs.
"Brightness Profiles" by Craig G
This one let me set custom brightness levels and select them with a touch.
Works through two touches, one to open the program and one to select the preset (close automatically).
Would be perfect if just was one touch that toggles but I will survive
By the way, it is free and open source.

[Q] Tap screen to wake up?

Hello All,
Is there an app that can dim the screen of my Archos 101, and return the screen to predefined brightness with the touch of the screen?
My device is mounted on a wall and the power button is hard to get too, so having a screen dimmer that can return the screen to normal use seems like the way to go.
Or what about the screen never going to sleep, but have it do an auto dim down after a set amount of time and with the touch of the screen it returns to normal usage?
At this point I would settle for work around.
T.I.A.
u may try the app "tasker" wich has a function for brightness level...
so u can at set an idle time to turn it down,.. and hopefully also one to "unidle" or screen tap. Sadly im not sure about that exactly as i dont use takser frequently... just try it out
I also remeber an app wich was able to set a little overlay area to the screen on wich u could slide to turn up/down brightness - so u can slide down to turn it off - and up to turn it on (or left/right,...).
Will search if i can find its name... cant remember atm.
Both methods would require to disable auto turn off on idle function...
As u can WAKE UP the device with the screen while it's in sleep.
Hello FrEcP!
Thanks for the reply.
Will look at Tasker now, seems to be many options so I will need to sit down and have tea to figure this out
Screen Filter
Allows you to even set the level to dim screen to. Simple tap on it to dim, and another tap to make it normal.
Hello diablo009,
Thanks, that may be what I need!
I bought Tasker cause it is important to support our developer
Tasker did make and is still causing my brain to tingle!
Will give Screen Filter a try too.

Screen filter is more like a manual one. You got to click on it to enable or disable it.
O.K. so I tried Screen filter and it is a 50/50 solution. Yes it does dim the screen but it is manual whereas I ned something more automatic.
As for Tasker, I have drunk two pots of tea, and energy drink, and gone through two days and still this powerful app is a bit of a challenge to setup.
Anyone with experience setting up Tasker?
OBJECTIVE:
1. After 10 minutes of idle have display dimm to 50% brightness, and never shut-off.
2. With the tap of the screen have display return to 100% brightness.
In exchange for help I would be willing to baking you homemade cupcakes!

yes another problem with screen filter is - it just sets an over lay in gey color - wich means actualy your screen still is at fully brightness (wich is annoying at night /u still got an ugly high glow of the backlight + doesn't save power [k is minor for a wallmount - but still should be considered] )
Well if you would have told that (objectives) more early - your solution would have been more easy
I thought u wanted to completely turn off the screen while being idle....
Anyway:
Settings->Display->Display Timeout->10min
Settings->Display->Brightness->full
Settings->Applications->Development->Always stay on/Stay active...->true
Does exactly what u want - after the timeout (10min) the screen dims (to about 50% or lower) - sadly i can't tell how to affect this value (but it seems its the lowest value the default brightness controll, let u set)
On touch - u got the full brightness... till timeout is reached again.
Device wont ever go to sleep.
Hello FrEcP,
Your instructions worked!
50% auto dim is more on target than before, and I return to baking
Apologies for not being more clear in the beginning.
This is from the Taker Forum:
"Unfortunately you can't do this, Android doesn't provide APIs for apps
to test idle time or respond to screen taps (unless it's in their own
UI)."
Thank you again FrEcP, and diablo009!
You help to make this forum rock solid with your sharing.
workaround with screen filter works fine
I use Screen Standby on my Xoom tablet for this exact same feature. It allows you to set at what time the tablet automatically dims. I have it set for 5 minutes. And then I just tap the screen with my finger and it wakes up. It is also nice to note that tapping the screen does not push any buttons but rather just wakes the device.

[AUTO-BRIGHTNESS MOD] UPDATED 16/4/11 Enable Auto-Brightness easily WITHOUT ROOT!

As you know, automatic brightness has been disabled by default and you cannot enable nor does it have the option.
Here's what you can simply do to enable autobrightness on your xperia s:
1) Head over to the market
2) Search for SPARE PARTS application.
3) Run it, then scroll down to brightness and tick AUTOMATIC
4) Download NOTIFICATION TOGGLE application by j4velin from the market (OR any power widget/brightness application that presents you the option to tick auto-brightness)
5) Enable the brightness toggle
6) Click the brightness toggle you have set, and set it to 18% (REQUIRED to make autobright ness work - this is the lowest sensor value it can read)
7) Finally, tick the choice to choose automatic.
6) And this is how to get autobrightness without root, enjoy your beautiful screen wherever you go in any situation, day or night
confirmed working here, thanks!
confirmed working here to, tho i didn't do the last step 'install notification toggle' it ruins my drop down bar.
Nice find!
Auto bright work withot mod.

It's on by default.
No root required, just a working phone.
Also, this doesn't belong here, as you suggested apps, nothing you actually developed...so it should actually go into the "Themes and Apps" Section.
You pretty much just pointed out a widget that can turn it off which could be done anyways by several apps.
A little bit improvement...
I had installed SPARE PARTS and activated the automatic brightness...
And I also installed Notification Toggle, however I not really like it since it really will ruin my drop down notification...
So I chose to use Brightness Level...
BUT!!!
For my case, if I adjust the brightness to MORE than 50% before and then directly pick auto brightness (multiple tests in both Brightness Level and Notification Toggle), it will no "Auto-Brightness" adjustment.
Addition: If initial brightness is 0% and then directly choose autobrightness will have same problem.
I do need to either do in these 2 ways:
1) toggle the Xperia S preset toggle widget: turn off the backlight (the widget which can toggle wifi, bluetooth...)
OR
2) set the initial brightness between 1 to 50%...then just change to autobrightness...
P.S: I dunno is my illusion or not, if I change to 25% at the beginning then autoB, the brightness will not drop less than it while I close my room's light...XD

yes, the lowest the sensor can go is 18% (confirmed), so for auto-brightness to work at its best, set to 18 then click auto, first post updated =)

My problem is that I can't turn it OFF...I hate the Xperia S auto-brightness...it's so slow and not smooth at all...it's like varying from 10% to 10% and it never stops varying!!so annoying!...initially I even thought it was a screen/light problem until I noted "ohh...this is not a screen problem, is just an awful auto-brightness"
not working ,,, root and unlocking bootloader , custom rom and kernal
any advice >?
and thx for hard work

Hello, when i search "spare parts" on google play, i only found the "spare parts plus!" app. But the problem is this app doesnt have the autobrightness option. Anyone knows where i can find the spare parts app that have the option???
Thanks a lot.

[Tutorial] AUTO BRIGHTNESS 100% Working on L9

Hello Guys!!
Have anybody missed AUTO BRIGHTNESS feature in L9 because lack of Ambient Light Sensor,
If yes, the don't worry. I have an easy solution for Auto Brightness, Yes you can use Auto Brightness on LG Optimus L9:victory:
NO ROOT REQUIRED
Download and install These two app from following links:-
Lux Auto Brightness
Tasker
After Installing these apps follow these steps:-
Lux Auto Brightness:-
Go to Lux settings
Tap on Sample Collection
Tap on Select light reading source
Select Camera
Then get back to main settings menu
Tap on Mopdify linked samples
Tap on Luma TAB
Tap on ADD, set brightness (yello bar) to 4% Luma value to 1 and press ADD
Add 3 more links with these values= 35%-70|100%-80|50%-120|
Exit Lux
Tasker:
Open Tasker, tap on Plus Gign(+) on main screen
Tap on Event
Select Display in Event Category
Select Display On in Display Event
A blank screen will appear, do nothing just press BACK Button
TAP on New Task +
Enter Name to task or just tap on tick
A blank screen will Appear, tap on Plus Sign (+)
Select Plugin from action category
Select Lux Plug-in
Tap on Edit Button
Scroll Down and Tick in front of Refresh Backlight brightness? Under Force
Press Done, then press back and back again
Exit Tasker
Thats all work to do, now your dvice have Auto Brightness feature:silly:
To test, just press power button and lock the screen and then cover front camera with finger and press power button again, screen will Light up wait 1-2 seconds, Screen brightness will reduce, remove finger, lock unlock screen and brightness will resume to normal.
I have tested this for full day on my L9 and got no any battery drainage.
You can modify Linked Samples Values to your comfort zone for batter sample values you can also search other XDA forums.
Guys try it and let me know how you feel
if you got any issue please post, I'll try to solve it (Coz m also new to TASKER & LUX so may be it will take little bit time to Solve:fingers-crossed
EDIT: You can uncheck "Presistent notification" in general settings of Lux Auto Brightness, If you think it is draining your phone's battery. This will also disable the annoying Lux icon from notification.
HIT THANKS IF I DESERVE IT
Another mod we miss in our L9 just got fixed.
thanks for sharing
i'll try it as soon as i can and report back.
Is this battery hungry workaround ? Two apps must run in background so they must eat battery .
Is it possible to have a refresh .. for example every 10 minutes camera will check light to set brightness?
Found it's in lux settings!

No, I have tested this yesterday for full day and haven't noticed any battery drainage coz of these apps. According to me, besides draining battery this MOD should save battery by adjusting it according to Ambient Light.

Yes Mr.Brown, you can set automatic refresh in general settings, but I'll never suggest you use automatic mode, it could drain your phones battery.

Yes bleuwavem you are absolutely right, that's why I am using tasker to initiate refresh process on display on. If you use lux individually then it will slow down your phone and drain the battery. In my tutorial actually lux is not running in background (if it is running you can kill it). Tasker plug in triggers it to refresh the brightness. Coz i have used it for hole day and currently using, I have not face any issues with device performance. If anyone body faced any issue can post here i'll try to solve it.

in which condition you want set your brightness 40%. Like if you want to set brightness 40% in normal day light then, when you are in normal day light, go to Lux, tap on modify linked samples, tap on Luma. Here you will see Current Value: with some digits showing. Now here hold your phone in normal light and click on "tap to refresh". it will say reading for a second and then it will show you a value, mine was 118. Note that value. Now tap on add at the bottom. In "Add custom link" box, drag and adjust brightness (Yellow Bar) to 40% and in Luma enter value you have noted. then tap on Add. thats all, now your normal daylight brightness is 40%.
Try it:highfive:
My device works just wake mod only....i do not understand why need tasker app, works without
Noob Question: Why does a lux value of 120 set a brightness of 50% in the tutorial? I've set it to 100% for now till you reply.
Great solution OP! Also, why do we need tasker to force display brightness when there is a setting for adjust brightness on wake in the lux settings? Is it because it doesn't adjust it sometimes?
---------- Post added at 11:01 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:55 AM ----------
I've also noticed that direct sunlight throws the lux reading off....(lux value becomes lower in direct sunlight than in shade in the same area)

Yes bleuwave your right, I used Tasker for two reasons, first as you mentioned Lux's auto brightness Don't works some tims, so tasker force it to adjust. Second reason is this that using tasker you no need to keep lux app running in background, coz if we keep it running in backgroung it will slow down phone performance and drain it's battery. Using tasker you will never miss auto adjustment

i have set 50% Brightness with value of 120, coz 120 is normal day light reading, so in normal day light 50% brightness is good enough to see the screen. 50% brightness is also no drain battery.
Yes this behave of lux also amazed me. it shows light reading value 80 in direct sunlight, in shade it shows 120. But the settings i have done, are working like charm even in sunlight also. as per my observation reason of low reading value in direct sunlight may be auto brightness setting of front camera ....What do you think about this..
Thank you very much....now my phone has auto brightness

Yes sebx its strange, Stock kernel may be an issue for this. I will suggest you to change some settings in Lux, keep every thing disabled in Lux settings, because Tasker is enough capable to run its services automatically and keeping everything disable in lux will reduce battery consumption also, so change setting and try it again.
