Trying to install OTA manually on a phone that was rooted and then unrooted - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've asked this question on a couple of other forum sites w/ no replies received, so I thought I'd try here since you guys are much more technically adept. And, I'll qualify this w/ the fact that I didn't need root - I just wanted a ROM that had voice navigation. I had a motorola droid that I turned in because I liked the form factor on the Eris. But, I seriously missed navigation. I had it rooted for about 2 weeks when the 2.1 OTA rolled out. So, my goal is just to go back to the standard OTA.
I rooted my Eris per http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/53963-guide-stock-1-5-latest-root-2-1-a.html
I had to do something a little funky to get it to work. But all was well - and I did have Amon's Recovery image and root.
So, I unrooted the phone per another link - and again, I had to do things a little differently since I couldn't access the recovery per the directions. The phone seems to be back to stock. I no longer have Amon's Recovery and the terminal window doesn't give the indication that I have root anymore.
Firmware version - 1.5
Baseband version - 2.32.40.11.09
Kernel version - 2..27-c77ff39d
Build number -1.17.605.1 CL104882 release-keys
Software Version - 1.17.605.1
Hardware version - 0002
So, I downloaded the .zip file from google - renamed it update - put it in the root directory of the SD card. I had to delete the PBM0001.img file because it wouldn't do anything except process that image feel and reload 2.1 after I unrooted.
I press volume down and red power key and get the menu
Fastbook
REcovery
Clear Storage
Simlock
and select Recovery - press power key - it reboots w/ the 3 little guys to a screen w/ the exclamation point in a triangle but it's like a background image and then I have a menu
Reboot system now
USB-MS toggle
Backup/Restore
Flash zip from sdcard
Wipe
Partition sdcard
Other
Power off
so it is different than the instructions I've read from other sites. I select Flash zip from sdcard. It only has one file to process - update.zip (and no, it's not named on the card update.zip.zip - only update) I select the file and it says on the next screen:
Build : RA-eris-v1.6.2
Install : SDCARd:update.zip ?
Press Trackball to confirm, any other key to abort.
I press the Trackball.
Install from sdcard ...
Finding update package ...
Opening update package ...
Verifying update package ...
E: No signature (690 files)
E: Verification failed
Installation aborted
And, at the top of the screen is the menu again. And, I have downloaded the file 4 times now and tried in the hopes that something just got corrupted.
I am unable to press Power and Home to get the screen that says:
Apply sdcard:update.zip
After pressing Recovery - the reboot takes me directly to the Android system recovery page w/ the option of Flash zip from sdcard
I'm hoping I've provided enough information to get some help on how to get the 2.1 OTA and be back to stock.
I have googled no signature and verification failed

well, you still have amons recovery installed on your phone, with the 1.5 stock rom. the reason the update.zip file is failing is probably because of when you renamed it you might have opened it up and messed up the file signature on it, therefore saying the signature failed.
you can either reroot and then follow the downgrade again to remove the recovery mode, or try downloading a different 2.1 OTA update again, wait for VZW to send it to your phone.
or my personal prefered method would be to keep root, and grab any of the new roms, which has all the features of the ota rom. 2.1 ota is almost the same thing as the leak version 3. if your looking for stock, go with eris official v 1, which has overclock, but you dont have to use it.

No Phone Service after loading MIUI

I went from stock Froyo 2.2 to MIUI v3 using the following link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=992251
Now when I startup my phone...
For one, it won't connect me to a network so I can't get phone calls or texts etc.
Also my volume up button is switched with my volume down button.
Trying to make a phone call it says "Mobile network not available".
Does anyone have any information to help me fix this problem? I am stuck.

Ok sooo...
I downloaded
kernel-cm-7-INITIAL-Vibrant-signed.zip
renamed it to update.zip
copied the update.zip along with the MIUI 1.5.20 english pack one to the root of my SD card (internal sd root)
Went into recovery mode, and tried to flash update.zip. It gave me some assert error right away. Now my phone is in a cycle of rebooting where it reboots into the flashing thing, tries to load real quick and then reboots itself.
Any tips? I'm kinda scared.
Odin back to stock and then try again, this guide by s15274n has all the files you need and step by step instructions.

The vibrant files you flashed probably weren't compatible with the I900 kernel/recovery you had flashed.

odin jfd, root, flash recovery then start over with the cm7 kernel then mui.
I'm having a problem following the guide...
Under 2 - Download 3 files..
Mount your phone and move the rom to the internal
AND the UPDATE.ZIP << DOWNLOAD
file if you wiped both internal/external or need to root.
Power down the phone, or pull the battery.

I don't know how I can get my phone mounted. Whenever I plug my phone into my computer (with the battery in), it automatically reboots itself and starts the crazy reboot thing. I also can't get back to recovery or downloading mode, it automatically goes back into the reboot thing.
And then in step 3 where it says start Odin, plug in your usb cable. With the battery out of your phone hold both volume buttons for a couple seconds and then plug in your USB cable. That doesn't take me to downloading mode.
EDIT:
Okay I figured out how to get it into downloading mode again. I need to do what it says above by holding the volume buttons with the battery out etc. Then you add the battery.
Hi guys. I got Odin to work. got back to stock.
Then got back into recovery mode to flash the cm7 kernel...
It is the same error as last time. Here's the actual error this time.

Are you going under install zip from sdcard or just pressing reinstall packages? Instructions say to select reinstall packages after you rename it update.zip

I boot into recovery mode. It takes me to the stock recovery mode. Then (with the update.zip and the miui zip in the root) I hit reinstall packages. It takes me to the clockwork recovery. Then I do install zip from sdcard. Trying to install the update.zip or the miui at this point gives me an error and then any kind of restarting will throw it into the reboot cycle.
EDIT:
When do I remove the battery? I do reinstall packages, and then after about a second or two it goes to the clockwork recovery, and then I removed the battery like it said. After I booted into recovery again and it took me to the clockwork recovery again, and then I tried to load the miui and again an error flashing.
EDIT 2:
For some reason Odin back to stock changed my phone to 2.1.. I upgraded it to version 2.2.1 (not using keis). I was able to get much further than normal when flashing the miui.zip.
My phone tries to startup, it gets to the Samsung loading image (which says i9000 under the samsung logo).
After that the screen goes (and stays) black. When I hit any of the buttons on the bottom, they glow white so I know that it is turned on.
I can't see anything on the screen, but I must be able to get it into downloading mode because I can get it to say 'added', and get try to start loading things, but then it starts never actually connets, it just hangs. Any ideas? Getting it back to stock right now would be fine so that it is usable again.
EDIT 3:
Ok, now I can see things again. For those who are wondering...
I had downloaded the 'Galaxy One Click Root' thing to try to root my phone before installing miui like it says. Well there's also a unroot button. I clicked that and I got it to go back into this custom recovery image. Once I did that, I navigated around a little and found something that said switch to Downloading mode. I did that, and then was able to use Odin to get back to stock. The screen is working, and so does the radio. It's back to 2.1 though. hmm..
ok so lets try this from the beginning
go ahead and odin to stock jfd (2.1)
now let phone boot as normal
no worries about letting it sit 10 mins or anything.
ok so you have the cm7 initial kernel as an update.zip correct?
3 button into recovery reinstall packages twice that should load you into clockwork
(orange clockwork menu)
1 Mounts and storage menu
Format system/cache/data (do all 3)
+Go Back+
wipe data/factory reset
Pull battery Or just press and hold all vol up + down + power
back in recovery.
install zip from sd Card
Install the Miui ROM reboot system.
lemme know how it goes.

I was back at stock (which I'm not sure is 100% stock because when I turn on my phone, it has a samsung GT-i9000 image on the screen for a second or two before saying vibrant).
I have the update.zip and the miui on my internal sd root.
To get into recovery it's just the 2 button combo (volume - and power) for me.
I only have to hit reinstall packages once, and it takes me into clockwork.
I format the things you said and did the factory reset....
Pulling the battery and then trying to get back into recovery mode put my phone into a reboot cycle. (screen where it looks like after you do wipe data/factory reset) and then I have to odin back to stock.
The three button combo does the same thing. I can't get to the next step.
EDIT:
After the reboot cycle thing. I was able to get back into recovery mode even after it started its reboot cycle deal. Then I was able to install the miui rom. My phone has been on the Samsung Cyanogenmod boot screen for about 5-10 minutes. Not sure if it is trying to boot up miui or just stuck. I'll let it sit for another 15 minutes before thinking its stuck.
EDIT2:
Yep, It's been about half an hour. My phone is stuck on the cyanogenmod boot screen. I can't get it back into recovery or downloading either.
EDIT3:
After some serious playing around. I was able to get it back into recovery mode. Wipe everything, apply the update.zip again... and then was able to get back into downloading mode and reflash it to stock.
Does anyone know how to get to true stock, so I don't have the Galaxy-S GT-i9000 Samsung boot screen. I think that this has to do with why it is failing.
After searching around a lot more...
accidentally flashing an i9000 rom flashed the boot.bin and sbl.bin.
The files to odin back to stock jfd doesn't include the boot.bin or sbl.bin so that's why I get the extra boot screen, and why I 'brick' my phone everytime I try to flash another rom.
Apparently I will brick my phone anytime I try to flash a rom from now on, and that I need to find a boot.bin and sbl.bin combo for the vibrant if I want to be able to flash anything again or get any update past 2.1.
If anybody has any info on how to get this boot.bin and sbl.bin combo could you let me know. I can't find the files anywhere.

[Q] Can't root. Limited Recovery options. Can't install CWM

My phone
HTC Legend - boot 0.43.0001 S-ON
Running: LEGEIMG_Legend_HTC_WWE_1.23.405.1_Radio_47.26.35.04_7.05.35.26L_release_120393_signed.zip
What I want
I want to install B 0.8.4 based on stock HTC FroYo
My Problem
Can't install CWM
Can't root phone.
Stuck on last step, since I don't have the option to select an update (see below).
Renaming it to update.zip and applying the update via
- Apply sdcard:update.zip
In the "Android system recovery <2e>" mode it only shows:
- Reboot system now
- Apply sdcard:update.zip
- Wipe data/factory reset
- Wipe cache partition
And I think more important it shows "E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command" in yellow at the bottom of the screen.
When I try to do "Customized CWM 3.0.1.3 fake-flash with ext4 support" pressing the Apply sdcard:update.zip I get
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
The FULL Story
I received this phone from a friend of mine so that I could fix it since he is a bigger noob then me ;-)
I don't know what exactly he had done wrong or what on earth he did on it but all the applications on the phone with internet acces crashed.
His usb was also bricked and therefore you couldn't install any app. Since he deleted the apps that could install an app from sdcard.
So I downloaded an original rom (see above) and renamed it to LEGEIMG.zip and that's how I restored it back to normal, next I unbricked the usb using the usb unbrick method over at modaco.
Using this little workaround I found, since I had no root. (Thanks i4o!)
After the phone had it's full functionality (I guess except the recovery mode? Is that thing standard on a Legend?)
I tried rooting it again so I could install the custom rom I want.
As I've said before everything worked fine but I can't flash the ROM for the actual root. (Last Step)
The Fix?
So can you help me guys? How should I solve this one?
I've searched the forum a couple of times but I'm not even sure how to put this one. Thx in advance and a thumbs up for every tutorial creator I linked in this thread.
Just to be clear, I don't have any problem with the phone at the moment, I just can't root it and therefore I cannot install a custom ROM.
I hope this is detailed enough, if not just ask and I'll give the extra info required.
EDIT: I found the issue, on my 64bit Windows it just keep failing. Since it's 64bit. I used Linux emulated through Vmware and it just said Step 1 Complete without doing anything... So I thought there was a problem but there wasn't. Then I switched to another pc (Also 64bit lol, since I don't have a 32bit) and it worked fine.
So this thread can be closed.
Easiest way is to Alpharev your legend as its HBOOT 0.43...This will allow you to flash custom recovery and i think would be the easiest way to root (and unlock NAND)
www.alpharev.nl
All you need to do is follow the instructions, DON'T try to flash one of their custom HBOOT's. They are for the desire NOT the legend...I will say it again, just follow the instructions.
Here are some instructions for the desire, Only difference being that you have to press the power button at some point.Just follow what it says on screen

[Q] After Bell 2.3.4 update - stuck at Dual Core screen

Hi, I'm hoping somebody might be able to shed some light. My phone isn't rooted or unlocked and last night I did the OTA update. Upon the first reboot, the phone is stuck at the "Dual Core Technology" screen and won't go any further. I can hold volume down and power to get to Fastboot, a bunch of other things, and Android Recovery.
Within Android Recovery, I've tried the wipe options as well as the apply sdcard update.zip but the wipes don't help anything and the apply update resutls in a signature error.
I feel like if I could just get the .zip update onto the internal SD storage, the apply update would work (maybe the OTA download was corrupted somehow). Is there anyway to use Fastboot or Moto-Fastboot to copy files to the internal SD storage?
Any help would be much appreciated.
hi
Try putting the OTA on a micro SD card (thats where it looks for it anyways) rename it to update.zip and try to flash that update.

Tried and this is what happened (which is more than before):
Install from SDCARD
Finding update package
opening update package
Verifying update package
...installing update
Verifying current system
.....assert failed: apply_patch_check("preinstall/app/gameloft_3games.zip","5428aeff....."
Not sure what that means, but I'll google and search here for a bit.
Edit: Just noticed that there was more to the output:
E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(status 7)
Installation aborted.
either you removed some apps before or the install updated some of the files and now doesn't pass the verification check.
search on here for a bit possibly flash cwm recovery and then the 2.2 gobbstopper. or you could try to go through bell as everything you have done is through official methods.
Okay thanks a lot for the help. I have since Unlocked using the Pudding IHOP thread and next will install Gobstopper 2.3.4 Bell (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1195922), though the CWM (tenfar's) post only shows that it's only for AT&T, which is odd since it's linked from the Gobstopper Bell thread).
Any idea if I can safely use Tenfar's CWM Recovery from here?:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138541
Actually i would recommend only using that one for gobstopper purposes.
Although I would either wait until the 2.3.4 version is updated or get the 2.2.2 version and upgrade your device with the official rom as there have been changes since the 2.3.4 leak
Would you recommend another recovery instead of Tenfar's CWM? I'm currently now using the one that came in the CWM_INT_Recovery.zip (recover-d00.img).
Seems really hard to find a recovery that is definitely safe with Bell Atrix, and I'm never sure if just "moto-fastboot flash recovery %recoveryfile.img% is all I need to do now that it's unlocked. I might have to find another ROM since the download isn't working so well.
to install the gobstopper? no only use the latest tenfar cwm for that. after which, you could go with romracer and it will be fine
Okay great, thanks. The latest Tenfar CWM says at the top of the thread that it's only for Unlocked ATT users in bold red text so I was hesitant to use it.
I have the same issue. I have tried EVERYTHING I can think of to get it to boot.
The only difference in my case is I have run the update multiple times all finishing successfully with no errors.
This is really bugging me, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I'm an extreme novice Android/Atrix user but I would recommend doing what I did:
Use the Pudding IHOP instructions to RSDLite flash the unlocker SBF for Bell
Use moto-fastboot to flash recovery with Tenfar's latest CWM recovery (updated June 30)
Use Tenfar's CWM recovery to mount your USB storage, download the GobStopper 2.3.4 zip to your sdcard, then again using CWM, update from the zip.
See the GobStopper 2.2.2 thread for some pre-cleanup steps before trying to update with the 2.3.4 zip, all using Moto-Fastboot or regular fastboot from the Android sdk.
Thank you
You saved my life

[Q] Cannot flash a rooted, S-off, hboot-1.00.0000, OTA 2.2 Legend

Hi everybody,
I've got an error when trying to flash my legend, or even enter to the recovery.
Here you got my specifications, in order to give you an idea:
S-off
HBOOT-1.00.0000
RADIO 7.13.35.05
I have an OTA 2.2 update, from Vodafone
I've rooted the device with "unlock root" some weeks ago.
ROM MAnager 5.0.0.6 with successfully flashed ClockworkMod Recovery: 5.0.2.0
The problems:
When I try to boot into recovery (for example, when in ROM MAnager I try to backup my ROM, or install a ROM from SD card), I get this message:
" E:can't open cache/recovery/command "
Then appear 4 options (blue colour): reboot / apply sdcard: update.zip / wipe data factory reset / wipe cachee partition. The 2 wipes work OK, the reboot also, but when I select "apply sdcard: update.zip" I get next message:
" Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted. "
When I try to open bootloader, I get this message (it appears but disappears 1 second later):
" SD checking
Loading legediag.zip
No image
Loading legediag.nbh
No image or wrong image
SD checking
Loading legediag.zip
No image
Loading legediag.nbh
No image or wrong image "
I get also an error message in ROM Manager when I do "Fixing Permissions". First I got a Superuser window "SuperManager has been granted Superuser permissions" but then a ROM MAnager window "An error occured while attemting to run privileged commans!".
I've tryed uninstalling and reinstalling ROM Manager, Factory reset, everything, except Wipe Dalvic (not sure about what it does).
I'm not sure what's not working. Is it the recovery or ClockworkMod ?? Is the HBOOT-1.00.0000 the problem ? Is a disfunction of the SD Card (i've not tryed another card...).
Not sure if it could be associated to the same problem but now when I plug the phone to the PC the phone don't ask me if I want only charging mode or USB drive, even if I fix the behaviour (ask always or USB drive default). Not sure if it's related or not.
So, I'm a bit lost. Anyone has any idea ??
Hi, I only having s-on, I can't flash custom recovery, so have never seen how it really works, but what your describing is your stock recovery hasn't hasn't been replaced with custom recovery (clockwork mod recovery) and is still looking for update.zip in the root folder of your SD card.
Maybe look for an update.zip in the xda forums and put it in the root folder and see if that helps.
Found this for you

Hi escombralls,
i think, you are the first who used the "unlock root"-tool wihtout boot-problems after that.
Maybe, this tool nevertheless did not work correct. All other legend users had no success with this tool.
You should use a guide from this forum for rooting ...
if you are in the system recovery and the top part say...
Android system recovery <3e>
you cant use the fake flash...
you can find guides where everyone uses with no problem to properly root your legend from the forum.
than you'll notice after the process (downgrade to 2.1 step) when you go to recovery you'll notice the top part of this bunch of blue words say...
Android system recovery <2e>
than you can use the fake flash...
head here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=969076
for the fake flash and follow Blay0's simple rename copy instrutions...
with this fake flash (CWM) you can start flashing other rom and also partition your card (remember to backup important stuff before you do anything)...
good luck
OK, thanks for your inputs.
First of all I will try with another update.zip file.
If the problem persists, I will follow one of the guides for rooting...
I will keep you informed.

[Q] Bricking my EVO 3D for manual ICS update? HELP!

Hi.
I'm a noob, & this is my 1st question in any forum whatsoever, so please be gentle.
this is a serious problem, for I am just minutes away from bricking my device.
HTC started rolling out the official ICS update OTA for the evo3D, and my device said there werew no updates available when I checked manually. so I did what everyone would do, try to install it manually. so after a bit of google, I found out that you can do so, by downloading the OTA files to sd card, and followed these instructions ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1732984 ) . after that, I had 3 files in the root directory;
(1)
S_OFF_4EXT_RECOVERY_OTA_SHOOTER_U_ICS_35_S_HTC_Eur ope_3.28.401.1-1.20.401.8_release_2627623qpt0ma8rnwgn0qq.zip (which is the OTA files, 274MB)
(2)
PG86IMG.zip (containing radio,adsp,boot,sbl3,sbl2,sbl1,rpm,tz, and rc data - all are .img, and a little text file.) size was 18MB
(3)
root-OTA-ICS.zip size was like 6MB
so I powered on the device while holding the volume down, and went into HBoot (which mine is version 1.49.xxx.bla blah) and the options were "fast recovery, reset, all that, but: it shows those options for like 2 seconds, then goes automatically to read PG86IMG.zip, listing the files above. it asked me if I wanted to start an update, and being the noob that I am, I obviously said yes. it updated all those files above, and asked me to restart. now I can't get past the HTC splash screen boot logo. the screen just goes black after that.
If I boot into recovery without an sd card in, it goes to it, with the red /!\ icon, and when I press volume up and the power key, (after re-inserting the SD card) it says
"E:Can't open /cache/recovery/comand"
"E:failed to mount /sdcard (No such file or directory)" three times.
then there are blue options above,
"Reboot system noe, Apply update from SD card, wipe data/factory reset, cache,"
so I selected "Apply update from SD card"
I get
"E:failed to verify whole-file signature.
E:signature verifiction failed
Installation aborted"
Please help!
PS, I don't want to loose all my contacts, data, msgs.
and is there a way of mounting the SD card to the PC so that I can copy files to and from the MicroSD card? - or any application/command prompt which can do so?
Sorry for the long post. I just wanted to explain everything so you know where exactly I'm at.
Thank you so much!
Clockwork Recovery, fail,..
STEP 1: Unlocking
I just updated my EVO 3D GSM OTA from Gingerbread 2.3.4 to ICS 4.0.3 then after that unlocked it via HTC bootloader unlock and fastboot. Software version 3.28.707.1. UNLOCKING SUCCESS!!
HBOOT-1.53.0007
May 22 2012
STEP 2: Recovery
I already flash my recovery with suitable CWM. The recovery option is there in the HBOOT, however when I select it the phone just reboot without opening the CWM screen to select custom ROM. I had tried with several CWM, but it's the same.
Could anybody help me with the installation of Clockwork Recovery tools? the Revolutionary Clockwork Recovery is already out of date,..
QuestionCeption? PostCeption?
Hi.
I was rather expecting an answer or some help/solution to my question,
rather than another question on top of the question...
well appreciated!
Thanks!
