Cant get car charger to work... any ideas? - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi,
I've got a couple of micro usb car chargers I bought to charge my old samsungs.... but they dont charge my X10.
I've shorted pins 2 and 3 on one of them( d+ and d-) as per this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696760&page=2
but it's still not charging my x10, if anything the battery is being drained quicker when plugged in to the car charger
the label states the output on the charger i have shorted is 4.2- 10v @ 600mA, 750mA max
is there something I am missing?
edit: I've read some of the charging threads and discovered the li-poly battery protection circuit is stopping my cheap chargers from working, so it looks like I need to buy genuine sony (Sony an300), I wonder if this is deliberate on sony's part? I thought the whole point of standardising phone chargers to micro usb - is so that they don't go to waste every time you buy a new phone?

I found that using the original micro USB cable (Or a good quality one) and one of these -> Car USB Outlet works better than buying an adapter with the cable already attached.
Such was the case with my X1 and X2 as well.
These newer gen ones are around 700mA instead of 500mA.

Hi
I have one of these from Blue unplugged. go to blueunplugged dot com. in the quickcode type 139166. It is a 'Santok STK Car Charger With 1A USB Port'
I worked on my old X1 and with a micro usb cable it works on my X10 too.
I previously had a different device. It got very hot when I was on the phone and using satnav. This one is great. Its not missed a beat.
I think this is the cable, Quickcode 138344. Please check before purchasing though!
sorry can't post URLs.

I use my Motorola car charger and it works fine when my phone has some juice left in the battery. the first time I tried to use it the battery was completely flat and the charger would not work well, though

I bought that one, and it doesn't work with my X10. I have tried other USB devices, and the charger works.
After contacting the vendor (e-cell) they are going to send me another unit, free of charges. But I am not sure if it will work, either.

I bought one the other week to try, it doesn't work with the standard SE cable.
The light on the actual plug comes on but nothing indicates it being plugged in on the phone itself.

I've found no 3rd party in-car chargers work with the X10 and after reading all the problems people had here, I just went and bought an official Sony Ericsson one of eBay for £15. Works perfectly

I think you have to have one that has an output of exactly 700 mAp.
I've tested with higher and lower amperage and nothing worked.

I grabbed an SE AN300 off Play.com and it works with no issue. Looks like I made a trouble-free choice.

where can I get a proper working USB / Power cable?

Hi
I'm in London. My original cable is getting a bit worn, and I'm looking to get another one. I got a couple from Ebay - but although they are fine for data they don't charge properly ( same for car chargers ) -
Anyone know where I can get a working one to use with my wall plug in charger?
cheers

I almost never use the original cable, and just end up using standard USB cables and have no problems whatsoever.
Vis-a-vis car chargers, there does seem to be a difference between car charges. I used to find that I had problems charging Blackberry's with cheapo car chargers, but all my current car chargers can charge the Hero just fine.
Regards,
Dave
Some won't work. Cheap ones won't, generally.
Blackberry ones do though!
Odd but true
universal USB car (or wall) charger with a standard USB to mini-USB cable works just fine
http://www.amazon.com/Black-2-Port-Travel-Charger-iPhone/dp/B002FFG6JC/ref=pd_sim_cps_2
http://www.amazon.com/Scosche-Dual-USB-Car-Charger/dp/B000RYSU7O/ref=pd_cp_cps_1
also, bought el-cheapo charging set for various phones, covers almost every brand and type you can have (had few different ones in family so it's practical) and mini-USB is present. it works

Car charger that works?

Can someone explain this to me?
I've tried two car chargers:
The micro Duracell, output: 5v, 750mA
http://www.duracellpower.com/cell-phone-chargers/portable-chargers/usb-charger.aspx
Griffin PowerJolt Micro, output: 5v, 2.1amps
http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/powerjolt-micro-ipad
And none seem to be doing anything. They charge my X1 other phones just fine, even the bluetooth headpiece but not the X10. What gives? Is there a solution?
Really don't want to buy a third usb car charger and I REALLY like the micro format.
Do you figure this charger will work?
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002WH3QLE/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER
The output is 700 mAh which is what the SE plugin charger is at.
Thoughts?
Cheap and working carcharger
Well, I don't know about the one u have posted, but believe it or not, this cheap piece of hardware is working very good for me (damn, can't post link cos I'm a new member... go do dealextreme . com, and search for : "35687". It'll show u the charger I use).
Use it to charge my SE x10i every day to/from work
Thanks for the tip!
Can you let me know what the output is for that unit? Can't find it on the site.
I have a suspicion we can't use anything that pups out more that 700 mAp
Its not the amperage thats the problem, the problem is the x10 (kinda). Its set to only charge when the data pins are shorted on USB, i.e. when it's connected to a computer or a 'compatible' charger. All you need to do is short pins 2 and 3 (the middle pins) on the female USB connector on your charger and you're good to go. For me, I just took some solder and spread it across the pins on the outside to short them. This will work for any USB charger regardless of the power output. No worries about damaging your unit, I have been using my car charger with my x10 for months with no problems.

Problems with travel chargers?

Hi,
i just went thru my second charger and I noticed whenever i plug a charger into my phone, my phone goes crazy. all the menu starts sliding in and out and all the apps starts opening up.
I have no idea what's going on, it just goes crazy!
when i use the USB charger that came with the phone it's fine. But I don't feel like carrying an adapter where ever i go.
does anyone have this problem with 3rd party chargers?
thanks
same problem with HTC HD2, some iPhones,Samsung Corby,... I think that the problem is in capacitive screen and some chargers.
I bought on e-bay USB travel charger for Blackberry Bold 9700 (original and not generic) with extra long cord. Works perfectly with mini pro
I bought a OEM Milestone charger before and I had the same problem.
So i tried X10 generic.
I can't find a OEM X10 charger that is for US.

this one is good quality (original blackberry), and works perfectly with X10 mini/pro. As a plus it has an extra-long shielded cord.

hi
I am having the same problem but i know the solution and reason. these low quality chargers provide higher voltage than current and hence the problem. You should go for a high quality branded charger. I am using my old hp-ipaq charger with usb data cable for this phone and it works fine. i have also used the same cable with car usb charger from dealextreme and it works fine. Only the cheap ones will give this problem. Also i use that problem charger in case of emergency but i switch of my mobile first. It charges my mobile faster and i believe it will shorten the life of my battery.
I have the same problem with cheap chargers and cables from ebay, but the original charger and cable from SE does not give me any trouble.
I got this from dealextreme and it works great!
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/usb-charging-power-adapter-for-htc-black-100-240v-us-plug-52190
had some problems with car adapters..
found this on DX and works great!

Auto Charger - will any USB charger work?

will the included USB cable that comes with the Note be able to charge the phone in my car if i plug it into lets say my iPhone auto adapter which has a usb port on it?

You will be charged at much slower rate (limited to 500ma max), or not at all if your phone battery is almost dead. iPhone chargers are designed for iPhone only. You will need a Samsung auto charger (some other non-iPhone smartphone chargers may work too, just not iPhone chargers).
I just bought a cheap 5$ car charger USB adapter for the note will it work?

It will definitely work. The question with those cheap ones is, how long will it last. I usually try to find an OEM branded one like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250973439590#ht_2859wt_1000
Typically, chargers with USB port on it will only do slow charge. In order to support fast charge, you will need short out the data pins to allow phone to draw more than 500ma. Typically auto-chargers that comes with microUSB plug directly, such as the Samsung auto charger, will do so, asume your charger is rated to output more than 500ma.

It will be able to charge it. Keep in mind IF your iPhone USB charger max current output (5V 1000mA) is LESS than the Note's charger output, it will take longer to fully charge - but it will charge and will NOT damage the phone.
If you're looking to buy a new usb charger, look for one with the highest mA output rating since whatever device you plug into it will only draw what it needs. ie, my iPad charger is rated @ 2A/2000mA so it covers every device I own (all rated for different current inputs from 500mA up to 2000mA) and that's the only usb charger I take when I travel since I just have to switch out cables to charge other devices. On the other hand, if I only had a lower current rating usb charger, my iPad (requires 2000mA) would be out of luck.
Current output info can be found on the respective charger of your favorite device.
Hope that helps.
it does help, thanx Rand! i cancelled my Amazon order...wish i saw this post sooner.
I have this works great with anything up to 2.1amps...

Looks like that charger is rated @ 700mA. It'll charge the note about 30% slower than the wall charger.
This is my car charger

Best Quick Charge 2.0 Cable?

I'm looking for a good QC 2.0 cable that is either equal or better than the stock cable. I'd like it to be at least 6 ft. Any suggestions?

Portapow make one:
www dot portablepowersupplies dot co dot uk/portapow-20awg-fast-charge-sync-micro-usb-cable/
Not available on there yet, but they are on Amazon US: Search for PortaPow Specialised 3.3ft 20AWG Charge Only Micro USB Cable for Blackberry, or item code B00RL68RNS
(Sorry about the url formatting - I'm too new to be able to post them)
If the Cable does Charge ONLY, then it wont work for QC charging......QC charging requires the cable to have both power and data.....
I've been using mono price premium cables. Turbo charger charges noticeably faster then a standard charger. Never compared vs the stock cable
I have been using these by media bridge. Have had them for a while, before I had my nexus. Works great and nice quality, seems to charge as fast if not faster.
Mediabridge USB 2.0 - Micro-USB to USB Cable (6 Feet) - High-Speed A Male to Micro B with Gold-Plated Connectors - 2 Pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KLI62BM/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_gQGdvb0BNNAYF
I'm using an extra cable from a GS4 wall charger. They are long. Don't know why nexus devices ship with such short cables.
Edit: official Samsung GS4 wall chargers are on amazon for like 9 dollars.
Search is your friend

Anker hands down is the best and it has a warranty and customer service to back it. Not all cables are created equal.
http://www.amazon.com/Anker%C2%AE-Extra-Premium-Android-Samsung/dp/B00MLP3JMS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1427076204&sr=8-3&keywords=anker+micro+usb
I picked up one of the anker ones and i am impressed with its build quality! I cant really tell if it charges at the same rate as the stock cable, but it doesnt feel terribly slow or extremely fast. Im very happy with it though!
I second Anker. I have two 5ft and work just fine with quick charger.
interesting...I always thought that the QC ability came from the wall connector..not the actual cable. I used regular plain jane cables with my QC wall adapter, and they worked just as well as the one that came with the phone...hrmm

It's built into the phone and the charger. The cable has little to do with it. Other than that all of the pins must be connected, no charge-only cables. The device and charger have to agree on the voltage, and they talk over the data pins to do that. That way, the QC chargers don't destroy devices that can't handle the extra voltage. The thicker power wires have a lower voltage drop, which is nice, and very important for non-QC devices. For QC it's less important, but if they are available, get them. I happened to already have the ones I'm using, so I tried them. They work great.
I'm using a 5' cable from amazon (bought a while ago) and a 5' extension cable from an old USB WiFi adapter I think. Quick charge still shows up and charges real fast.
