Make bluetooth always visible (2.1) - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Since we alwas have to go into settings to make bluetooth visible for 120(?) seconds i was wondering if it is possible to make bluetooth always visible.
I found this guide: http://blag.tsukasa.net.au/2009/08/25/always-discoverable-on-android/
But it seems like hcid.conf is not present on 2.1 roms.
Can we get this to work on 2.1 roms?
Ty!

are you speaking from the pov of the hero being needing to be discovered by another device?
that isn't the sort of thing one needs to do more than one time per device though. once you've done it, the other device should remember the hero's info. just enable bt next time on both devices and voila, it should connect. right?
and there is the power control widget to enable/disable bt (along with other alternatives on the market and the sense toggle widgets if you're on a sense rom).
If you want your bt to be set to "discoverable" constantly then your battery will disappear really fast and it's a security risk as well (hence this feature doesn't exist in any bt device I've used including android). that's why apps like "bump" enable it only when, well, bumped, and in a way that both devices can talk briefly without user configuration necessary (but still user approval and instructions are needed before any file/secure info transfers can occur).
there's a difference between these three modes:
bt off (saves most power, bt is battery hungry...),
bt on (icon in display; can connect to devices that it has previously been paired with such as your bt handsfree or your computer for file transfers just be enabling the other device's bt - this puts it in sort of a receive mode where it will ack the other device to show itself but doesn't use a TON of battery, however it's still better for battery to turn off bt when not in use)
bt on and discoverable (which is, by bt design, only going to run for a short period such as 2 minutes because it opens up your device to others seeing it and trying to add it and also is transmitting over bt constantly so uses the most signal... 2 minutes seems pretty long to me actually, I've seen shorter in other devices).

I'm sorry, but that is just rubbish.
I've had Nokia's since bluetooth was first released, and they have always been discoverable. Their battery hasn't been worn down by that either.
If bluetooth is on but not discoverable, then your device is constantly looking for those devices that it has been paired with before. If it is discoverable, then other devices can pick up on this and locate your phone - same battery usage, surely.
Take for example now, I'm sat in a public area and I can search for devices. The devices that show up are therefore discoverable, no? In that case, plenty of devices are discoverable.
To be discoverable and hidden behind a password is no issue, and it amazed me that Android missed this out. It was infact one of the things I disliked about Blackberry.
It doesn't kill battery (any more than having undiscoverable bluetooth on), and it is a useful service - if a friend (who hasn't accessed my device before) wishes to send me a file, I don't expect to have to pull out my phone, tell it that it can expect a file, before accepting the password and waiting for said file. It's just an extra, unnecessary step.
What is the point of having bluetooth on, if no other device (other than those with previous access) can see it?
"Someone is trying to send you a file" is all you need. That is what happens in 'discoverable' mode. That is what Android is missing.

yes its a shame on x10 too is smart phone weakness. x10 kick a//

The setting you're searching for is in /system/etc/bluetooth/main.conf
DiscoverableTimeout = 0
The default is 120 (2 minutes). 0 will stay on forever.

Actually I found that in /etc/bluez/main.conf with root explorer but how to edit that value to 0?

mount the folder as r/w and if you long press, choose to open in text editor

Tnx dude, I forgot to long press on file, what I did was open the file and than try to edit. But I've edited the value now to 0 or 600, reboot phone and when bt is on discoverable again shows only 120 seconds?

Could you check if the value in the file also has been reverted?

I check instantly after I saw that he shows 120 seconds and the value was 0.

hi all
will you please show a step by step how to configure the bluetooth discoverable time.
thank you

GPS Power Consumption on Mogul

hey guys...with all the talks bout gps going on...i thot bout checking on how much battery gps chipset consumes vs having it off. I know few people wanted to have it ON all the time to use program like sprite terminator track the position of the phone if its lost or stolen.
I have used acbpowermeter and it shows gps uses more than twice the power. This test does not include running a gps program like tomtom or iguidance...just astrogpslauncher to turn the chipset on.
attached are 2 gif images showing the power consumption overall;
One w/ GPS off and the other w GPS ON
In both test i had to have the screen ON with brightness in the Exact middle in settings.
Test Results
W/O GPS
Avg consumption: 80mA
5 Min consumption: 6mAh
W/GPS
Avg consumption: 197mA
5 Min consumption: 17mAh
though I know the gps would consume more power...for me its wanting to know what is the more power efficient...running the internal gps...or having to have bluetooth on so I can use my bluetooth gps
Can you test one with just GPS Today running? It's supposed to consume a lot less battery
^ Don't see how as it is still running GPS.
ok guys...i wasnt running a gps software...but i had primed the gps (gave power to the gps chipset) using astrogpslauncher...i just wanted to know how much more power is the chispset using than not having it on at all.
@aph - i doubt it will use less battery...as it would still b accessing the chispet (using same power that astrogpslauncher is).
@CromDubh - i dont have a bt gps unit...but you can use acbpowermeter and find out...and please post results for others.
i would assume the power consumption would be different due to the bluetooth being a lower power radio (max 30 feet) and also depends on the program (google maps will d/l map pieces while other will read them off the card requiring one less wireless data transfer).
So if you were going to test BT vs AGPS can i recommend using one of the programs read from card AND then another set using google maps or something similiar?
well the thing about GPSToday is its supposed to use less battery because its not constantly running the gps, it just powers it on every few minutes to get a fix on your location, so its not always running like with astrolauncher
i donwloaded acbpowermeter and it working fine, i just wanna understand how to use it and what it means...any clarification?

ok...some things you want to know...thers a RESET button...and theres the pause/resume button
if u want to do a comparison; i wud recommend some things
1 - have a stopwatch on you...there is no timer on the program itself except for the graph
2 - i would recommend u disable power saving like "Turn of screen after xx Seconds" in backlight settings; and "turn of ppc after xx mins" under power (otherwise you will be pressing the buttons which can interfer with true data
start the program; get the stopwatch ready; run whatever program you want to run and hit the reset button on the acbmeter
try it few times and u'll know exactly what to do
i use a program called dotpocket to take snapshot its pretty kool proggy

the dark one is the average the other one is current at that point; if u run the program and while its going, you press a button; that will make it spike a bit, launch a program; it will spike higher, close the program it will go lower
I still say your not going to get a real sense of how much power the GPS Chipset itself consumes until you test it in the following way....
Test 1 (Control) - Turn location setting to 911 Only (disabling the GPS chipset from listening to the radio, collecting data and reporting it.)
Test 2 (Chipset enabled) turn on Location without running any primer program to see if the location on setting actually consumes more power... There should be a difference but a minimal one. The Chipset itself does not require a lot of power. In fact you might find that the chipset was always on it's just that there was no software to communicate with it until now. (you would have to find a rom that support both new and old radio to prove it though) Location would in that case only control communication to and from, not the chipset itself.
The problem with the method being used so far is you can not tell how much of the power is being used by the chipset and how much is increased proc load of the program due to the fact it now has data to process. Just the power to update the screen alone with the incoming data will make the power usage spike and that spike has nothing to do with what the chipset is eating on you The Data has to go through the Proc eating power. your also driving the serial ports with the program on as well so it can receive data...All of these drains make up this 87mA difference. It's not all chipset.
When the final official radio is released I bet you won't need this primer program to enable the chipset. And then you'll have a more accurate test of just how much power the chipset uses without clouding it with processor, serial and screen refresh cycles adding their two cents to the number.
I think the chipset has always been on and it's just that there was never the programming to talk to it under the old radio driver. the new radio has issues opening up a communication port to the chipset properly under 3.27 radio and that is the only reason why the primer is needed to see that the chip is working. Under normal circumstances (and at some point official radio driver) turning the location on would automatically open that port for communication to any program who polled it. My guess is that just isn't happening in the beta. Should happen whenever it is finally stable and official.

Newbie questions

Hello,
I'm a s740 proud new owner. I've been playing with this gadget for the past few days and I must say I'm very satisfied. Apart from some problems (battery, small call buttons) the phone is really great. However I have some questions that I'd like to know.
1) Are there any power management tweaks you use. Apart from the options in the phone do you do anything else in order to save battery?
2) How customizable is the home screen? What can I change from it? For example the Internet Explorer bar or adding other menus.
3) Is there any way to have "shortcuts" for apps ? Example "new sms" or for any other app. Going through the programs menu is tiresome.
4) Is there any option to restart the phone? No reset, just restart, without having to turn it off and on again manually.
5) Do you use the in-built calendar or did you add other apps for dates etc.
6) Can I "lock" the data connection? I usually use Wi-Fi or Internet throught the USB. Some programs (e.g. Messenger or browser) turn on the data connection without me knowing. Is there any way I can avoid this?
7) Do you use voice tags for apps and contacts? Is it satisfactory?
And last (but very important for me):
8) Which app do you use for mp3 and audio? The Audio Manager, WMP or any other app? Which do you think is the best. The wired headset has only "volume up and down" function? Not anything else? Are there other headsets that are compatible and if so can you control the audio apps without having to use the phone?
I know it's much, but any answer(s) would be appreciated.
Thanks a lot

1) Try turning off 3G/HSDPA (unless you need it)
2) Search for CHomeConfigurator
3) Yes there are. You can even put them on the home screen (again, CHomeConfigurator is the easiest method)
4) There is, but I forgot how to do that.
5) I use the inbuilt one because it can switch the phone to silent automatically during meetings
6) Yes you can. Try searching Modaco NoData
7) Nope, don't use it. I find the automatic search for contacts efficient enough (e.g. you want to call dad, just punch in 3-2-3 and it should be right there. Even works if you are looking for the phone number, etc.)
8) I use PocketPlayer together with an AD2P bluetooth headset (Jabra BT3030). Works quite well; skip, back, play, pause, pick up call and vol up/down work with this.
Hope that helps,

1) I find 3G is fine for stand-by but uses more battery for talking, so it depends how you use your phone. However, its best to select the right bands for your country/region. this is in settings->phone->band select. Also make sure the key-lock is on. Settings -> key lock
2) yeah, chrome. Not full control as no HardSPL unfortunately
3) ..
4) you can try a free app that can reset, look on freewareppc for something like this:

5) have a look at handango. agenda one and pocket informant are good examples:

6) not sure if this still works:

Thanks guys, you are really great.
Chrome seems a bit difficult for me, but I see there is a lot of feedback for it in this forum, so I'll give it a try.
Modaco NoData works fine until now. Although I had to disable "GPRS" "Internet" and "MMS" because if I let MMS enabled then Skyfire would open a data connection. That means I won't be receiving any MMS at all?
I'll check the players. Are there any "wired" headsets that also have buttons for "play, next, etc"?
Is there a compatibility issue with bluetooth stereo headsets or I can buy anything I want? (Although bluetooth consumes a lot of battery and I think I'd prefer a wired set).
Thanks again for your feedback

MMS uses normal data, so is effected by anything that effects data
Wired play, next and volume (you can use your own headphones)

nah
i like the std menu
its a question of remembering the numbers on wm sp
for example, lock keyboard is top button->2
just as fast as, say, nokia, left smart->*
my 2 cents

Numbers are great - nevertheless, it this case hold End Call button is much faster and convenient, IMHO...
Yeah, I use the hold end key too.
The power key is way to up and I'm lazy.
Standard menu is good, however I needed shortcuts to some applications and I made them (for example MP3 player, FM Radio, Resco etc) in a new panel. But there are some problems with the icons. I saw other s740 users complaining about that in the CHome topics and I was curious if someone has made it work.

Well, one possibility is to extract the icon from the corresponding exe (use xn resource editor for example). Me for one, I just use the speed dial function. e.g. press and hold 5 on home screen brings up resco explorer. yes, you'd have to remember a couple of numbers, but i find it faster than flicking through a dozen links in a panel to find the prog i need.
I mostly use the speed dials for contacts.
However I found a solution for the problem (not a full solution) with CHome. To whoever might be interested:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3945973&postcount=28
Solution for the Icon Panels and semi-solution for pictures.
I have a couple of other questions.
First of all in the "Call History" I only see the numbers or the contacts of my phone calls. However there is neither the time, nor the date, something I find annoying. Is there a solution ?
Second, I will buy another stereo headset for listening to music. I noticed that when I have bluetooth turned on the battery lasts less. Would a bluetooth stereo headset be very power consuming? Has anyone used one? Should I buy a regular headset like the one from colonel's link above?
And also, are the HTC headsets good or should I check out other brands too?
In Call History, select a contact and click the centre navigational button to bring up a list of calls for that contact.
Regarding the locking of S740 keypad via invoking the power button and pressing 2, the quicklist process is actually running as a result. Not much of a problem, but you may wanna reduce the no. of processes running on the phone.
Thanks, not the best thing but surely something of a solution.
I discovered a problem the past few days. The clock has changed time twice. Any idea ?
It changed both time zone and time (showing a random, wrong time even for the new time zone). Has anyone experienced something like that ?

I've experienced this once, but with a Nokia.
My phone clock was set on automatic and it changed several times during a few days. I expect the cause was the phonecompany.
AVE...
I'm using stereo headset from Samsung, and I have Bluetooth active all the time. Didn't made a big difference for me. But whatever I tried I still wasn't able to make Pocket Player compatible with control buttons on my headset...
CHome Configurator didn't worked well for me. In fact it didn't worked at all...
For now I'm playing around with voice commands...These are great for launching apps...
BTW, I had to disable HDSPA, since it turned on to transfer data without asking me for permission, and my operator has a lot bigger fees for HDSPA, than for GPRS...
Any idea about the MMS receiving size? Although there is an option for changing the MMS size for the ones you send (from 100k to 300k), I didnt find anything for incoming MMS. I already have some MMS which I cannot use because it tells me that the exceed the receiving size I have set. Any idea about that?
Is there any way that when I use Windows Live Messenger the stupid thing doesnt transfer all my MSN contacts to my contacts? I don't need that. The sync options in Windows Live are greyed out and I can't change them
Edit: I found the solution for Messenger here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=513643
However in the process I lost all my Messenger contacts from my PC, which I saved by the trick mentioned in the topic above
MMS: It's simple - limits are set by operator. Check settings as declared by definitions of your tariff/custom settings.
Will do, although as I said I changed my limit to 300k for sending while it seems I cannot accept larger than 100k files.
I'll check it out and see.
These are logically two diferent variables. What want to send is your choice per case. What your phone will receive directly, you have to pay for amount of data. And you have no other control as the limit. Therefore default settings for reception are rather conservative.
Something else, is there any way to change the "low battery" notification? It is on 20% and I would like to lower that because I think 20% is way too high.

[Q] WiFi niggle

I've had a mini pro for a while and I am very happy with it - but I do have one slight niggle with the WiFi..
When its connected to my home router it works great - until the screen times out and the powersaving comes on. At this point when the phone is used again the WiFi icon shows as connected but its not connected to the network and can only be convinced to work again and it needs the wifi resetting by switching it off and on again...
The firmware is the A012 but this wasnt a problem at first so I am wondering if it was something to do with an update or a piece of software...
If anyone has any suggestions..?
fortunatly that one is easy to solve.
- Go to wifi definitions;
- press menu button (is the one with four squares).
- Select advanced;
Then you will have something like "wifi suspension policy", you just have to alter that to always connect or something. My phone is in portuguese so I cannot say exactly what it will appear in English but I think you can get the idea.

Already found that and changed it and it still didnt make any difference unfortunately. not sure what else I can do.
I had the same problem. What is your wifi encryption type?
I was on WPA-PSK and I saw on a Japanese forum that if you change to WPA2-PSK it would fix the problem which it did! Let us know if this helps you.
hi, i think this will fix permanently until the phone updated to 2.1 but there is a solution before that which i have experience and come up with 2 solution:
firstly install wifi fixer, its free on the marked.
setup to never off mode on settings.
1. if the phone connected charged, the wifi always on even the dispaly off
but i don't recomend to do this with the batt fully charge, because it could make batt live shorten(overcharge), i think.
2. this is abit tricky but it works .. it make the wifi always on without connected charge by:
- install program called gmote than run it, if possible setup to connect to the server, but dont have to.
- and the tricky is, before the phone display off or you are not playing with phone, run the gmote and make sure the gmote program run in the DISPLAY PHONE (mine in gmote browse mode) and leave it like that, than you can leave the phone.
i used this all the time and it works, even i leave the phone for long hours and than check it ... wow the wifi still connected and i tried browsing internet.. amazing ... it works but i see it drain the batt faster .. lol
hope this solution can help anyone

[Q] Auto Enable Bluetooth when receiving call

Hi all,
I would find a way to enable bluetooth automatically when a call is being received: in that way, when in my car, I can avoid to keep BT enabled "all the time" just waiting for a possible call of few minutes..... thus saving battery ;-)
Is there any application suited for that?
I was thinking to a workaround but it seems pretty tricky and I still miss a thing.
We could use G-Profile and configure a profile, with BT enabled, which starts automatically on these conditions satisfied:
a.. during a call
b.. when a “specific program/process” is running
Item (b) is needed in order to let the profile be enabled only when actually in car and not when I’m at home or so
Of course, I have to start that “specific program/process” when entering car and shutting it down when exiting.
What I miss is a program to be used for that purpose. I would use a “fake” program which simply does nothing (!!), let’s say a simple toggle-program:
- Click on program icon: starts the program
- Click again on program icon: stop the program
Is there such a “useless” program ? Could some of you write it (if interested in that) ? I’m not so able to write it
Thanks in advance for your support.
I also use G-Profile. I have created a profile that kills the incalllock when mycarprofile is running. incalllock locks the virtual keys on my HD so that I can only take the call with the slide to answer. mycarprofile automatically answers the incoming call and turns on the speaker phone. I use G-Profile to kill incalllock whenever I turn on mycarprofile and runs incalllock again when i trun off mycarprofile.
What you have to do with G-Profile is to create a profile that monitors if a program is running and also add the condition "during a call" to switch to that profile and turns on bluetooth
brusko1972, G-Profile is not free.
Any free apps out there for this kind of function?

Dear ai6908, I appreciated your help: it really seems what I need but it's not working....
I have configured the CSDEVCTRL in order to:
- start when ringing or dialing a call
- turn on BT at call start
- turn off BT at call end
I have started the service.
When the call is being received the screen is locked by CSDEVCTRL but BT is not enabled at all.
Maybe I miss someting or it does not support windows mobile 6.5 (I have an HTC HD mini).
Any feedback are welcome !
You can try BTProfiler which I downloaded from xda developers a while back but unable find the thread now.
Not working on HTC hd2 wm 6.5
I downloaded this with high expectations that it would automatically turn my bluetooth off and on. I, too, am frustrated when I forget to turn bt off upon leaving my car. I set the program to run in the background, but the profiler does not work. I've tried all the conditions for turning bluetooth on or off automatically. Too bad, I was really hoping this would work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I just have a bluetooth icon placed in the programs on the main page. I tap it and it's on when I am in the car. I tap it again and it's off.
Simple, quick and very efficient to use.
Hi all,
And... fisrt of all, happy new year !
In reply to this thread, I've downloaded BTtoggle (which enables and disables BT just by tapping on the screen) and I was just thinking this morning that someone could have maybe written a program (a mortscript ?) which could be quicker than running this program when needed.
I've tested to put BT off and run the progam (BTtoggle) when the phone is ringing then switch on the BT earphone and... call is missed !
I was thinking in a program that could "see" that a BT "thing" (ear, dongle...) (I don't know how to name it) is running, running BTtoggle (which switches ON BT) and when this "thing" is switched off, running BTtoggle once again (which switches OFF BT).
The problem is like brontolo999, I know which are the questions to ask but unable to write the program that could be able to do that !
Thks in advance.

Tasker (Need a little help please)

Hi,
Whilst help with the profiles would be great, i'd much prefer help with understanding the "why" so i can learn it for future use.
Scenario:
I want to send a text to my wife when i arrive at work.
The most accurate way is when my phone connects to the work wifi. Now, i'm in and of the office all day so only want it to happen once.
So i did:
State > Net > Wifi Connected > SSID work > if %SMSKEV = 0
+ wait 1 second
+ variable set %SMSKEV = 1
So it will only fire 1 text off, then change the variable so it cant happen again. And then:
A separate profile that at midnight (using start and end time 0:00)
Variable set > %SMSKEV = 0
in order to reset it for the next day.
in my head this all sounds right. the tasks run fine (my wife gets the text) BUT the first task is still running now, not sending texts or anything, but the task is green in tasker so is ACTIVE. i only want it to run once when appropriate and then stop, but because i'm saying "when connected" to the work wifi, hours later i am still meeting the criteria of being connected to the work wifi so the profile is still active all the time later.
does this make ANY sense to anyone? what am i doing wrong?
many thanks for your help
Further:
"Events are a little different to other contexts because they are instantaneous whereas other contexts usually have a duration." from the user guide.
I think this is my problem, I need an event that says when i connect to the wifi, not a state. But there is no event for connecting to wifi...

I understand your problem. =)
I dont realy know how to solve it the way you tried to, but i think there is another way...
If you arrive at work every day at the same time you may find a way to connect a several time (for instance 10:15 am ) to your wifes text message.
Hope i could help yoou or even keep you mind walking on =)
I wanted to do exactly the same thing, perform a task once per day when connected to home wifi, only initiate a sync using FolderSycn, as opposed to send anSMS. I thought abut setting the variable, then resetting it at midnight just like you did.
But what I tried was to just set a simple profile:
when state = wifi connected to home wifi ssid, perform sync.
As you said, it still shows the profile as active as long as the wifi is connected, but it doesn't affect anything. As soon as you leave the wifi network and connect again, it will perform it again.
I guess in your case this might not be enough, just in case you lose wifi or leave your work for ome reason then return.
thank you both for replying. i think ive worked out a slightly better way of doing it.
As jiffer1991 said i used a time context but as a second context.
so i set it all up as i previously described with the Wifi Connected being the first context, then added a second time context from 7:40 to 8:10.
I always arrive within this period and have allowed a little extra. But it also means the task isn't active through out the day.
I know it probably "could" stay active and be completely harmless, i'm just thinking that maybe active tasks contribute to battery drain ??
Anyway thats how i've solved it for now.
thanks again for your replies and help.
:O)
You could also add as first context if %SMSKEV = 0
This way it won't be active the rest of the day and the sms will be send if you arrive a bit late
Cheers
