Basics - Streak 5 Android Development

I've been spending quite a lot of time reading up on android this last week, amongst playing with the streak obviously. .
I've found quite a lot of info about how stuff is done and development, quite a lot is particular to specific devices, but there's some great generic stuff about as well.
How about we have thread of info for people looking at developing for the streak, here and when there's enough/the wiki is back up we can transfer it to that one.
to start with here's a great guide on what makes your typical android rom

we definatly need something and we need more support...
i dont know where to start

How many users would be interested in Android

I have been messing with android on my blackstone for a while now and would love to run it on my athena, I have a copy of 1.0 android that boots that was posted ages ago on here, and have tried to no avail to boot a later version either 1.5 or 2.0.1.
I feel that its pretty close but need someone with some linux/android experience as I think the problem lies in the initrd file.
With this is mind if there is enough interested I would like to see how many people would be willing to donate to a developer/developers to get this running on the athena?
I have seen bounty threads before and they seem to work, so post if you interested in donating to the cause.
What about perfectng the wm6.5 ROM along side the Android for takers?
Thanks mate.
in all honesty i have a x7500 im actually going to sell my iphone and get a x7510 just to have them both .. if im gonna get rid of an iphone i dont think i'd be going to an android
i too am very excited about this as have android 2.1 working on Blackstone so you would like to see it om here. i am not a dev in that sense but i am happy to contribute in any way.........cash not a problem
By the looks of it not many people want android for athena? for anyone who does bear with me as I am spending a huge amount of time behind the scenes working on trying to port 2.0.1 with some help from some experts
Would find Android an interesting idea
Hello avergerpenguin,
Would be very interested in seeing this happen, I have been keeping an eye on your work for WM 6.5 but not yet had time to try flashing one of the roms but if your work on there is anything to go by then I'm sure this will be good. Is this going to be full rom for the phone or run as an app over the top of win mobile?

At present it is not possible to run android without winmo, however mitchy has created a rom for diamond that only loads the drivers etc needed and then autoloads android meaning that you cant get to the winmo underneath.
But firstly I need to compile a working android kernel, see what does and doesnt work and then go from there and possibly create a android only rom, but depends on functionality
I am in avengerpenguin
Id love it on the x7510
Android on Athena
I would love to have Android on my Athena, or even Maemo5
Hey Avengerpenguin, I am VERY VERY interested in Andriod on my Athena. I would love it. I am happy to make a donation to help this along if there is a real chance of us getting it going. I wish I knew how to develop so I could help out that way, too.
New Advantage user also interested in Android. I flipped my mytouch to pick up a G1 to use Android and an Advantage for everything else!
Looks like we're preparing to declare against the new dell mini 5 tablet. Its neat to see how ahead of their time these athenas really were.
Also interested in Android on Athena
Now that it looks like WinMo is a dying OS (no new versions after 6.5), I'm also interested in Android.
The new Windows Phone 7 isn't going to be based on WinMo, so I have nothing to gain by staying with Micro$oft software.
Would love to avoid buying a new phone for as long as possible. The Athena has everything I need in it; all I'd have to do is obtain new programs, which I'll have to do anyway.
I am late to the party, but ya, android would be awesome to have. I still have my athena kicking around, and would love to really use it again.
Very interest in Android
Please do this. Thanks for all your work
I'm 100% looking forward to using my Athena again if Android 2.1 can be made to work. It's a sensible OS moving forward given that wm6.5 is towards the end of its life cycle.
Cheers.

thought you had dropped off the planet, nice to see you still around

Hi Jay,
I went off and bought a Touch HD. Sold it and got a 3G, followed by a 3gs. Hence the absence. But I still have my Athena with an almost dead battary though. Each time I turn it on I'm always attracted by it's hugh and beautiful screen. Somehow I find myself unenthusiatic about using winmo applications again after using iPhone, sorry to say. That's why I hope to see Android on it. It would really Be an awesome device once again I reckon if that's done.
BTW, which is the newest and most popular ROM you guys are using these days? Might try it out for fun before Android is available for my Athena.
Cheers and good to be home.

Me personally, I have been using Lennie's 6.5 rom. I have not liked 6.5 at all before Lennie had his latest V3.00 out, and now I quite like it. I would still say that 6.1 has the edge for ease of use and speed, but Lennie's latest offering is much improved on speed and looks. We dont have many cooks left on here now, so people seem to be trying out some of the old stuff again. We seem to be getting posts from roms way-way back now. I have a G1 myself now, and very good they are to. I do like to keep up with the WM stuff still.

Dell Streak Devs? Any?

Do we have any devs over here?
At all?
Its pretty damn quiet?
My guess is that since it's only out in the UK at the moment, development won't really kick off until it gets it's american release.
Although Paul at Modaco has already rooted the phone so maybe there's the odd developer trying to do stuff.
I'm more a tinkerer than a dev, but I'm having a play with quite a lot of stuff.
As this is my first full blown android I'm learning quickly (I do have a lot of experience with linux so it's not that alien).
first up for me is to work out if the wifi chip supports "N" like the n1
tinkerer, dev, whatever ... your more experienced than any of us...
how come you came to the streak
I wonder if it will support 720p video recording like the Incredible?
I love big screen devices... I've always missed my htc advantage.
And frankly this is a geeks ultimate device... So much potential for tweaking and some bugs to fix, how could I resist
Its so far left field that I can't help but see it become a design classic
And it works like a computer! I even love the Dell shell that makes it work like a desktop linux... That's one in the eye for Ms and their moronic new os.
When I get the hang of it at bit more hopefully I can start to push it.. Just starting to work through adb shell..
May extract that latest update to see what's new and what they are doing, still far to much I don't understand. Its quite fun being a noob all over again and doing lots of reading and discovering some great websites.
Maybe we should have a thread of all the various articles/ websites that people find useful relative to the streak and developing for android in relation to it.

Good to see you in here fards
Like you I love my large screen devices which is why I went for the HD2. I cook my own roms using the latest sys and software with the amazing tools provided in these forums.
I would never consider myself a pro chef more like I can cook microwave meals hehe. Tools made by bepe and ervius etc do all the hard work for me
I ordered my unlocked dell streak direct from dell UK yesterday with a delivery date of the 13th of July. Its going to feel great getting that 5" screen and I cant wait to begin tinkering. I think the first step will be rooting it, recovery image then having a play about with the modoco kitchen.
Second thing to do will be to get swype installed\cooked in as I CANNOT live without that, I am so used to it. I missed out on the open beta so hopefully cant find the files floating around the web somewhere ;-)
Me too - ive got a hd2 (now for sale if anyone wants it) - my streak will be here tomorrow....i couldnt wait (got an o2 locked one but ive got a rebel sim card on the way as well)- going to florida in 6 weeks time so i may pick up a couple of unlocked ones while im there (i think theyll work out at about 280 quid english money...)
With the HD2 im kinda used to having the latest and greatest software but it looks like we're going to have to wait a little while for a 2.2 version....
Yeah, this part of the forum is a little on the quiet side...but good to see/hear some people are looking into cooking some roms!
At first glance, I wasnt too impressed with it...until I actually used the device...its awesome! This phone + 2.1/2.2 will be unstoppable.
Question for you; Are we waiting on Dell to release the kernel source for 2.1/2.2 so that we can build a custom 2.1/2.2 rom as the kernel for 1.6 wont work with 2.1/2.2? Or am I way off haha!
nope ur spot on we need a kernel for 2.x

The Samsung Vibrant. Worthy Buy?

Hello Guys. I was hoping on buying this phone tomorrow. I love the look, the screen, processor etc etc but i see a little lack of amount of Devs like i thought i would see. Coming from being a G1 user for about 2 years now and being in the dream forum you guys probably know where im going with this (constant roms, constant upgrades, hacks for absolutely no reason making having the same ROM for too long annoying) was wondering was this phone a worthy buy? or are things just at a slow pace for now? would hate to buy this phone just for it to get over shadowed by the G2 being available soon and then having absolutely NO dev support anymore now seeing as Cyanogen himself is getting the G2 and there hasn't been a cm6 let alone anything from him released for this device.

So you thought it would of been a better idea to post a NEW thread about it than replying to the thread that is pretty much relating to the same thing you're looking for as the OP in the other thread?
The vibrant beats the G2 in every other way in terms of hardware. The only reason why its going slow at the moment is because you aren't aware of what has been going on. CM6 was off to a slow start because WesGarner was working on the myTouch Slide before working on the vibrant but now his priority is to get CM6 up and running. CyanogenMod is already promised for the Galaxy S in 6.1, another reason why it is off to a slow start is because Samsung and HTC do their systems differently so it takes time to learn the environment and all that (I'm not a developer so.. I'm 100% correct about this).
It is still a top-notch phone based on benchmarks, yeah there are other factors based to it but the Hummingbird processor is the fastest processor on the market for Android phones. On top of that with Super AMOLED, it pretty much makes it so that when you look at your G1 it looks tiny. 4" is definitely the perfect size.
I'm sure once CM6 is up and running on Vibrant, things will start to roll up. I believe benbuchacher (known for his famous works: SuperD, SuperE, and incoming SuperF) has a Vibrant, Eugene_373 and justanothercrowd are some of the great developers that have been hard at work for giving us things to play with until CM6 is ready. There are many other developers out there that I haven't listed (sorry^)
The Galaxy S is also a international phone (as well as the four major U.S. carriers, people who want the keyboard on the Galaxy S have a option for the Epic 4G), a lot of the files are very similar and tweaks/hacks would work fine. So.. yeah in my opinion its a worthy buy, you have a 14-day (or 30) to return if it doesn't satisfy you.
You can follow their progress on Twitter & WesGarner's GitHub ( http://github.com/wesgarner )

That other thread was comparing a g2 to a vibrant. asking which was a better buy. I know every Dev you posted along with the basics of the vibrant etc Etc. Not a noob here in the slightest way Was just wondering from a person who has the phone thats all. The bold was exactly what i was wondering and was looking for so thank you for answering that question. Was planning on trying to port some the millions of ROMS from the dream over to this Phone but now i know why i don't see most of them already here. Gonna Do some research Now. Thanks alot fellow. And Yes I did think it was going to be a Better idea since you answered It quickly, efficiently, and there was no reason to read comments on things i wasn't really concerned about to find my answer. See how it worked out? Thanks again.
It's starting to leap ahead slowly. They found out how to flash kernels thru recovery just a couple of days ago so there isn't much more need for using a program called Odin to flash kernels. Odin can be pretty unreliable sometimes with the random crashing, I have yet to experience this but some people have. Definitely makes the job easier.
I was a huge fan of the "Super" ROMs, I definitely know what you mean by ROMs.. there would be a new one every other day and it would be fun to flash them and try it out then nandroid back. I'm certainly hoping for the same thing here, I'll admit that it is a little bit difficult when all the phones are seperated with their own forum but there is a proposal going around about merging all of them together (I9000,Fascinate,Epic 4G,Vibrant,Captivate)
Sadly i think the Vibrant is a great phone but wont have quite the dev as the G2 will. The G2 will probably be picked up by the likes of Cyanogen himself so it will depend on if a dev like him wants to keep it going or not. Had Cyanogen picked up the Vibrant and ran with it i think it might have had more possibilities. However i picked up the phone i had the G1 for 1.5 years (was a T-mobile Employee and got it 2 weeks before launch) and then switched to unlocked iphone for .5 years now im on the vibrant and im loving it. The android community has grown since i have been gone however i think since its samsung and not HTC that is what the problem is.

The main reason why Cyanogen picked up the G2 is because he doesn't condone manufacturers to put their custom interfaces over it. Cyanogen prefers stock Android. The OP said himself that he is a porter so he is a developer, I don't think it'd be a wise idea for everybody to just follow Cyanogen because there are definitely the people using the Galaxy S phones who would enjoy the same amount of modding.
There is larger room to make a name for yourself simply because there are less developers but there is definitely a large community for the phone that wants modding support.

Great phone, great experience and everything, does get kinda boring after sometime because i feel the phone is great the way it is, so until froyo theres nothing to really get excited about.
anyway great phone, and if i had to do it over again, i will still get this phone.a
I love it. Ive used just about every flavor of manufacturer-skinned android, along with vanilla (2.1 on G1). I can say after using other skins, TouchWiz 3.0 is pretty great. Vanilla android always wins, but this skin didn't feel as useless as some others.
I am coming from a mytouch slide, and a G1 before that, so the thought of a phone with no keyboard worried me. However the screen is the perfect size, and I'm pretty fast with swype. Not to mention, I had this phone rooted within 10 minutes of getting it home, whereas I never got the Slide rooted.
CM6 is coming to the Vibrant. Development is going to pick up. The Galaxy S series is on all four major carriers here in the US. I know we're going to see some interesting things happen.
I've had a lot of fun with this phone in the short time I've owned it, so I can definitely recommend it. And about the G2, it doesn't exactly seem light-years ahead, and if you wait for it...like magic the next superphone will be leaked and your attention will be on that.
So I would say get the Vibrant, you'll have a lot of fun with it.
...oh and I typed this out on it.
The only reason I might not get this phone is because of A. Its Sammie so who knows how long the official 2.2 comes B. Its not HTC so Devs will have to get accustomed to the phone C. It has Touchwiz. I could deal with Sense for a bit in waiting of CM6 or just stock 2.2 Android but playing with the phone in the Tmo store just turned me off. Looks like I will have to get a N1 or maybe wait for the G2
To me the entire CM6 is so over hyped its insane. The devs working on things are doing great. The phone is awesome as it is and anything beyond what it is now is pure gravy.
If/when CM6 hits I'm sure it will be awesome, but if you are holding out on the idea of that then well your going to miss out on a great phone.
The "devs" in the Dream section mostly produce hacked up beta garbage that never reaches a final release. Thanks but no thanks, I don't like flashing my phone 23452434 times to find something that works properly in ALL aspects. Then when you try to tell the devs what's broken they pitch a ***** fit and start complaining because they released it with known bugs. SICK of it.
There are a few that are worth the time in the G1/myTouch section but most of it is garbage and I had both devices.
Difficulty
The phone is worthy in every aspect of the word. This is an HTC forum. Luckily for us we have a very popular phone. I doubt we will go the way of other non HTC (AND SOME HTC) phones.
I am enjoying this phone, bloat and all, especially after the lag fix. I do enjoy an elegant vanilla though. But in its current condition would enjoy this Vibrant for at least a year.

Okay first off. Touchwiz is pretty good now. Touchwiz implemented pretty cool features and it isn't as bad. Dont criticize it if you haven't ever tried it. Samsung has already said froyo will be released sometime in September. Stop degrading a phone that you've never used.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Since the vibrant is fairly new and with the Froyo rumored to be out in Sept., I just don't see why any dev will want to spend all their time making a rom for a phone that might be getting the 2.2 upgrade in a month. I'm sure once the Froyo update is out, the devs will start their custom roms... For those that doesn't like the stock home launcher setup, just goto the market and get Launcher pro or ADWLauncher. Both will replace the iphone look alike. As far as lag fix and GPS fix, i didn't use any and my phone seems to be working like it should without any lag or gps problems.
I am not too into the whole ROM thing, if anyone could PM me the info in what it is for and why it is always great, it would be greatly appreciated. Anyways, back on topic, I like the Vibrant the screen is responsive and the huge screen makes typing a breeze(on both landscape and portrait mode). The processor is the best you can get right now on the Android OS and the screen is just amazing. The bad... Touch Wizard 3.0 is really good but coming from other Android devices I miss the App drawer so much. It does take getting used to, and if it is really that bad for you, then go get an open home theme. Or maybe stock Froyo installed(is that a ROM?) That would be nice, because the Vibrant would be perfect if it just had a less skinned theme. Great phone overall.

[Q] Rhodium/HTC Android ROM Bible?

Is it possible for someone to start a ROM Bible thread similar to what I found when looking for info for my wife's G1, but for the Rhodium?
Sorry if one exists, but I have yet to find it if it does...
It would help an Android noob out a ton so that I actually understand a bunch of the terminology and build references/names when in this forum.
I am almost totally new to Android, having run WM for 6 or 7 years, and it can get a bit overwhelming to try and figure it all out. Though, having recently switched my whole house network to Ubuntu/Mint, it's a lot less "greek" to me than it was a year ago.
I'd also like to start helping in some way if possible, as the work you're all doing is so awesome and gives me hope to keep running my TP2 for a lot longer than I otherwise would. Any pointers there either?
I think the best all in one resource I've seen is the FAQ over on PPG:

From apple to the wonderful world of droid questions!!

Hello everyone im fairly new to the world of android .
i just have a few questions that i have not been able to
find answers too Im sorry if there are other posts asking the same please send me their way if there is. i recently upgraded from the iphone 4 to the dell streak i have upgraded to 2.2 and rooted thanks to this great site .
i love how it runs now but now im getting interested in custom roms . my main questions are what are the benefits to a custom rom over just regular 2.2 ? and would a beginner user like myself benefit enough from one to install it? from what i can tell dj Steves roms are what we have is this correct?(i hear they are great but im not sure what they do ) i also purchased a galaxy tab when i got the phone phone and have not touched it much since im always playing on the phone should i keep it is there anything it can do that my phone cant? again guys please excuse me for the newbie questions and if did something wrong posting here u gotta remember i came from the iphone lol
thanks again!
Welcome to the "Android World" from another newbie
Benefits of custom roms usually are:
Increased performance,
UI customizations,
Application customizations,
Pre-installed must have applications.
Before my streak I had an Xperia X10 (and some windows mobile phones but that's another story). I tried most of the roms on X10. There are always small bugs that you have to live with.
At the end of the day you have to decide what fits best to your needs.
PS. I'm still at 318 official but I keep an eye to Steve's roms.
Im new to android as well, I bought this about 10 days ago.
I used to have iphone 4 as well as u are. I just downgrade to this streak for having bigger 5" inch.
Now I use official froyo 2.2 . Pref mod 318. Build 12821. Set cpu. On demand overclock 1.2Ghz . Pretty satisfied with it.
thanks
Thanks everyone for the welcome . i thought it was going to be a downgrade but i love the streak way more then my iphone 4! like you sai the 5 inch screen is awesome i don't think im keeping my galaxy tab anymore lol. I need to search and find how to do that on demand overclock i think for now ill stay stock until i understand android a bit better . Does anyone know where i could learn more about development on android is there a class i could take to learn the basics?
i want to contribute to the forum so i really want to learn how to develop
thanks again everyone. lastly does anyone know if anyone else is making a 5inch phone in the near future?
thanks
I'm so glad i'm not the only person to dump the iphone4 for the streak... I kinda felt silly doing so, especially since my iphone4 was completely custom, but so far i'm glad I did. My g/f now uses the iphone4. I got the streak for 49 bucks at best buy, and really liking it. perfect size.
anyone know why i can't get adb to detect my device? (debug is on, just upgraded to 2.2 ota)
-thanks
I don't think that you upgraded I think you down graded going with the streak that's where you went wrong
Not sure if 2.2 requires different drivers or not might give that a go. Welcome to android.
sent from my re-engineered dInc
So far my streak feels like an upgrade to me I had the iphone four since it came out but it just didn't feel right to me. guess it just depends on what fits your needs. My wife now uses the iphone 4th and I don't miss it one bit. I love having widgets and a screen big enough to actually make the gps useful I don't think I could go Back to a Small screen again
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I also just came from Iphone world. Been a fan of iOS since the 3g. still a fan.
But couldn't deal with a lack of a bring screen. Been using the streak for like 2 weeks now.
I like it. I think the screen lags compared to Iphone, but maybe some of these performance modificatons will help.
I will stick with froyo 2.2 for now until I learn more. Haven't even rooted yet.
