I am rooting soon and would like to know what rom is close to stock but takes out the bs apps like footprints and such, runs quick, lets me overclock, live wallpaper, has the basic functions working (google voice, marketplace, voice input, etc). Also why choose other roms vs. what I need? Do other roms have better functionality? Thank you for all for the great community especially the devs. Love you guys!

If you're looking for a rom that's close to stock try plain jane OR XTROM.
If you're looking for the fastest thing out there you'll want one of the froyo ROM's but they aren't stable yet.
try the plain_janeT2....... pretty much stock 2.1....... can overclock, a2sd, wifi tether...... removes apps like footprints, amazon, peep, stocks....

I had problems with web views on apps though with Ivans - presumably because it uses the 2.1 leak instead of the OTA. Id recommend PlainJain for HTC goodness, but XTROM for sweetness and speed. That thing is peppy.
Also, you can very easily remove stock apps yourself. So whichever ROM you choose, adb commands (or Root Explorer app), can get rid of em for ya.
I use titanium backup to freeze/uninstall apps.
I did a search for XTROM and nothing came up.

KaosFroyo, you don't need to partition SD cards to install apps to SD, Froyo does it automatically if set to install to SD.

I would like to start learning how to put roms together. I would like to start with developing a 2.2 rom compiled from galaxy s I900 source. Is there anyone here that can point me in the direction of a good tutorial on how to start? In all seriousness do you stay apprised in any way shape or form of android related news our just enjoy smearing the forums with your illinformed ramblings and negativity? Speak of what you know and don't be so eager to dismiss anyone with the fortitude to increase their own knowledge base on an operating system such as this when its these people who we all depend on to better our experience with said operating system. You do realize fallingup has written more android code than your phone can hold?
The reason they seem testy is they(actual developers) have been spending all their free time trying to get Samsungs crappy code to compile, and every couple of hours some one asks for an easy how to guide for porting Froyo.
Spend some time reading the forums. Find out what is already being done, then learn the basics of rom development. THEN, ask intelligent questions on how help develop Froyo for our phones.
Asking for an easy way to cook roms is the equivalent of the kid in the back seat asking "are we there yet" every 30 seconds. If you really want to learn how to cook roms, try a couple easy ones with the kitchen I linked to, then learn how to work on roms without the kitchen. Then work on Froyo. There is no easy way.
I didn't ask for an easy how to thinking that I could have it done by tomorrow or even that I could figure it out at all. I simply asked for a starting point and stated in the OP that I am a know nothing when it comes to developing. As far as my last post I meant no disrespect to fallingup in fact it was my mistake to quote his post. I actually intended on quoting jt1134 so, to fallingup, I have used your stuff many times and have nothing but respect for what you do. I apologize for the misquote. In most cases, the android packages are EXACT copies of the code that has been available from Google for months, and in other cases has one line changes referencing a Makefile that doesn't exist. This is no way gets us any closer to a 2.2 rom other than the kernel. What we REALLY need is a working 2.2 ota build or leaked package to move forward any faster. That is MUCH more important than the garbage that Samsung has been releasing to us.
If you are a noob to development, then GOOD LUCK. If you are an advanced developer with intimate knowledge of android, then GOOD LUCK. There are quite a few of us working on aosp ports to the SGS phone series, and so far it has not been completed for a SINGLE device.
There are no guides that will explain exactly what is needed to accomplish this goal. There is no one who is going to hold anyone else's hands through it. Hacking is a meritocracy, meaning you'll get help with advanced topics when you show you have done your research, put effort into resolving the issue on your own, and ask intelligent and informed questions that give exact details of the situation.
If you would like to continue to show a poor attitude, then go for it on your own. Wait for us to release a working rom. If you would like to actually learn and invest some time in moving forward, the GO FOR IT, you are VERY WELCOME to do so. I have admitted to my know nothingness. I simply want to learn. You could respond with something such as Galaxy S 2.2 is not a good place to start the learning process. Or you could have left it alone entirely and just thought that the link posted by "sgtmack" was sufficient enough. After all it did answer the exact question I asked. You might know a lot more about code and code writing than me but you have to admit, "your kind of an arrogant ass!" Yeah I do but, when this whole thing started I did not read who the post was by but, rather I just read the post. While I appreciate his work and am actually using it, my pride was hurt and its hard to interpret someones tone on a forum. I was under the impression in the beginning of all this that it would be known that I downloaded the 2.2 ota pushed to the original galaxy s and not the source they have been working with and making leaps and bounds with despite the road blocks. I was interested in learning how to port it (the ota I mean) rather than just sitting on my hands waiting to use anothers work. Chances are that I would never even come close to understanding what I was looking at but, I had to try. Now I'm sorry I asked. I quit...I was wrong, sorry! Leaving it to the experts. I'll go back to helping people with simple basic problems on droidforums.net and continue being an expert on using the real experts work.
This doesn't need to be turned into a flame thread. So here's my advice: join us on irc.freenode.net #samsung-fascinate and ask questions there. learn how to build a kernel, and maybe try to find out how exactly to port roms from other devices. Its a tough business, especially when we don't even get working kernel source from the manufacturer.
There are a ton of people that are working on the galaxy s phones, trying to get AOSP and the like on them. These phones are quite different than any other android phones, just with the way that the hardware / partitions are, so there is a lot to work through and document. Once one of the SGS phones is running aosp, im sure the others wont be too far behind. I wouldn't bother porting another crappy samsung rom, cause it will still have a lot of the crap that we are trying to get rid of by running aosp.

Are we all waiting on the GB fix? It is nice to have a phone and not have it flashed every other day but it makes me sad that we are at a standstill. I'm seeing lots of new ROMs and some with accompanying radios. Yesterday I installed the Chingy MR2 radio and Gingeritis IX, and all works great, no reboots.
Right now I'm downloading Th3ory of Ginger and and Th3ory3.0CandyV3, and those came with an MR2 radio, so it looks like things are all clear now? I gotta get my flash fix !

Unless you've had experience in writing code, it's hard to understand why things take so long so just imagine you're given a huge pile of parts and only half the directions to put it together (given the half from android and missing the half from htc, which htc was also nice enough to put in a format you cant easily read without translating). Your family keeps asking you "are you done yet??? You say no, it'll be done when it's done. So yeah. Working on a sense based android phone is sort of like that in the best way I can give a metaphor in non technical terms.

It's okay to wonder, sure. However, dont you think someone would post something if there was something new in the developers forum? Developers might hate being asked when something will be out, but the one thing developers like to tell the world about is something new and shiny they just made.
Just from my experience, the only people that can really pester a developer about when something should be done are paying clients. Even those get annoying, because developers sort of have a pet peeve against giving a set deadline since things generally don't go according to plan, especially when you cant estimate the project scope for something like android.
Might not agree with me and I'm relatively new to developing on android and haven't coded/hacked anything impressive enough to show yet, but I have linux development experience on other platforms and can just say how developers feel from my own experience of working with clients and free advice/work I've given elsewhere.

Wondering is fine but you might not have posted this if you read the dev forums. Plenty is going on so just your perception is at a stand still.
I just bought my Thunderbolt yesterday...and I'm coming from the Samsung Mesmerize. The difference in dev support is like night and day. Dev support was half the reason I bought the Thunderbolt. Keep up the good work guys.

It's possible but it requires lots of time, energy and of course, dedication. You need to rewrite most of the libs and modules, drivers, etc.
u can have wp7 . but truth is no one will ever spend so much time to write the libs and modules since x10 is almost a dying phone ( actually i can say its already dead) and little dev support. there are only 5-6 devs here.
HTC desire HD doenst have wp7 port yet , and there are countless amount of devs there. so basically u will never have a wp7 port. so stop expecting.

Your wrong about the sense thing straight away. One of my mates is port sense right now as we speak and he has got it to boot on my x10 so the sense. Not saying its going to work but the fact he got it to boot is the main thing. All there is now is to get everything working again.

yes it has been ported to other phones too, but never fully working. That is with hundreds of developers too, and they ended up giving up.
Go look at sgs forums, etc...
A bunch of non-devs talking about how we are going to get all these awesome roms suddenly ported

That's because they took the drivers, modules, etc. from the WM HD2. But still, it doesn't mean we can't do it. Like I said, you need to rewrite most of the system files. And again, I'm sure there is not one person who is damn dedicated on doing this.

Actually they are still working it right now as I have the nexus s and I use the nexus sense on my phone also the dens in the sgs forums having been working real hard on and I know that because I talk to the devs working on the port. We now have data, bt, WiFi, video is bot laggy and that's what they are fixing right now. Not far to go if you ask me. Also that looks to me that they haven't given up.

I will say though that sense is more feasible than wp7 that's for sure..
though it is still an insane amount of work.
sense has such a complicated framework it needs in order to function properly.

So, ive made a big switch. I went from a Captivate with 2.3, to my EVO 3D. Im currently running on 2.3.4 and Hboot 1.49.
Im looking to root the dev so i can remove some of the onboard rogers crap. Stuff in the background is running when i don't want it to. And some of the games and junk on here, i just want to get rid of.
Im reading several threads, but none of them are specific enough. Can someone point me to the proper rooting thread for this build? I dont plan on using a ROM, this OS is stable as it is.
As well, can someone recommend me an Antivirus? Ive heard of people starting to use these, maybe someone can suggest me one.

Im looking to root the dev so i can remove some of the onboard rogers crap. Stuff in the background is running when i don't want it to. And some of the games and junk on here, i just want to get rid of.
Im reading several threads, but none of them are specific enough. Can someone point me to the proper rooting thread for this build? I dont plan on using a ROM, this OS is stable as it is.
As well, can someone recommend me an Antivirus? Ive heard of people starting to use these, maybe someone can suggest me one.

Apparently you haven't read the important threads, otherwise you would have posted this in the right forum :')
Antivirus is overrated AFAIK, it's pretty much only an issue if you plan on installing unknown APKs or using third party app stores. I've been hacked once when I installed an unknown APK on my tablet, which resulted in a password reset of my Google account because my credentials were compromised and some prick attempted to log in to my account from Argentinia
I've looked at the other forum regulations and this was the one that came the closest to the subject. Then again, i also haven't been on the forum for about 6-9 months.
If someone can direct this thread to the proper section that would be greatly appreciated.

this forum is for ROM development. Your thread is about a question you have. That means this thread should go into Q&A (I honestly feel sorry for doing this, the Q&A forum is a very dark place where you can easily lose your mind among the imbeciles)

Depending on your hboot version many subprocesses are related.
My advise is to precisely indentify tour default settings then you will easily find out your happiness to clean what you dont want.
Btw, in dev section there are severals cleaned stock roms.
Depending on what you are looking for and consequences (root needed, s off, ...), make tour choice and enjoy.
Personnaly my favorite for daily usage is the Mwakious 3d one, but official ics update is coming since this morning all around the world (do not know for Roget)
Jump and enjoy this really Nice and Effective toy.

Well, ill take a closer look around and see what may benefit me. As stated before, im on Hboot 1.49. Im used to rooting and customizing my Captivate, not exactly the same as the HTC, thats for sure.

I like the anti-theft features of Lookout, but I prefer the other features (especially with regard to root features) of Avast. Right now though, I'm not running any.

As it says in the title. I want to use an aftermarket ROM like Cyanogen or even just an AOSP, but I don't want to lose support for the S-Pen. Can anyone recommend a good ROM? I keep getting the OTA notice from Verizon, but since my phone is rooted and I have a TWRP boot loader I can't update.
There are apps in the market that add spen support to all ROMs. I personally have tried a few non TW ROMs and found them lacking. But thats just me.

Got any recommendations? I would like something that's quick and not bloated with excess apps. With my previous phones, mostly moto droids, I was a fan of the AOSP ROMs because of their simplicity and speed.
Please let's not turn this into a best rom thread.

Wow so you're telling me that the people on this forum can't even handle a simple recommendation request without turning into 5 year olds on the play ground? That's pretty pathtic. So how would you recommend I go about getting a relative idea of which ROMs are worth looking at without spending time I don't have flashing every one of them to my phone? Let's at least give people the benefit of the doubt before treating them like kindergarteners.

I'm remembering what made me stop coming to XDA in the first place. You people are assholes. Don't you think I did search? I found one thread related to ROMs and the S-Pen and it was unclear whether it was working in all ROMs or just certain ones. I still have no clue what apps enable the pen and thanks to the over the top moderators that act like the gestapo I can't even get a recommendation on what ROM to try. Forums are suppose to be here to help people. If you're tired of answering the same questions, don't. Just ignore them and move on. Someone who's more willing to be helpful will eventually answer it. We don't need your unhelpful snarky remarks to remind us how a forum works.
