I personally find it too cumbersome to have to press the unlock button AND then swipe again on the lock screen. There is a free app called "No Lock" in the market. After you install it, you just press the power/unlock button and your are in.
Obviously for those of you who need security and have passwords on their lock screens, this won't be of much help.
*Tip* If you don't have a gel case yet, get one. I bought the gel case from T-mobile and it covers over the lock key in a way that you have to press it in with a little bit more pressure (but not too much) which should help you avoid accidentally hitting the button while it is in your pocket.

Yeah, I just picked up my black case from T-Mo today. Gotta tell you it's great, and makes the phone look good as well. Oh, and it also adds some weight to the phone which feels really good too.

The TMo case doesn't stick in the pocket, and holds the phone quite well.

I agree. I was worried about the stickiness before I bought it, but thankfully that isn't an issue at all. It also adds a good amount of weight to the phone. Without the case it seemed to be too light. I think this is the first smartphone that has a problem of not weighing enough.

well, it has good intention, it just doesn't work for everyone.
The obvious idea is to prevent things on your homescreen from activating if the phone is turned on by the button (aka activating crap while in your pocket such as dialing people).
the reality is that a lot of us are completely annoyed with the unlock screen because it's just one more annoying step
I prefer the double tap to unlock... like pressing menu twice on the g1.... I like the swipe screen too tho bc it shows of my mario lwp...
I also agree on the being too light of a phone... I was looking for it for a few mins yesterday just to notice it was in my hand... and I dont feel it on my lap while sitting (bad for standing up or exiting a vehicle..)

I don't have mine yet, but i hope to not have that problem, i always put my phone on my lap while driving and had dropped it a couple of times when exiting my car, it sucks
agree with the phone being really light, that is not a bad thing maybe a bigger battery will come along, and the gel case that came out from t-mobile same time feels really nice emphasis on the really. As far as the lock screen, i like the puzzle lock feature BUT the default one when no events sucks... any way to only change that part?

Yeah, I wouldn't mind a battery that made it g1 size as I am used to that, I am not going to say being light and thin is a bad thing, but being used to my G1 I don't think I would whine about more heft, and if we could get a 3A+ battery that would be rockin
The constant swiping was bugging me too. It almost made me miss my G1. Thanks for this suggestion. I'm going to download No Lock now.
I don't know why the manufacturers added screen wipe to unlock the screen and I think this is a hassle.
It's good to know there's an app to disable it and I have it installed on my nexus one.

Actually it does stick on reboot. After I installed and it tried it again for the first time after rebooting, the lock screen came up. This is normal. Let the phone fully boot up, and then it will load No lock. You will still have to slide the unlock screen, but only once at the time of boot
I've been using it for about 2 days, and every time I restart, it takes a little while but I only have to unlock the screen once
I like the app since I think the lock screen is retarded. The only thing I don't like about it is that the phone unlocks in my pocket when I receive a new text message (as you can imagine, this happens a lot) and it's really annoying.
Does anybody know of an app that lets you customize what unlocks the screen? I don't really like being able to unlock the phone with the volume rocker, either.

I've had my phone in my pocket all day with No Lock on and I don't think there were any accidental button presses. The case that T-mobile sells works great cause it makes it pretty difficult to hit any of the side buttons by accident, you have to put a good amount of pressure in specific areas.
So if you don't have, please consider getting one, they also protect your phone and I think it makes them look cooler.

I don't have a case, but that's not what I'm talking about. An incoming SMS wakes up the screen, whether it's in my pocket or even sitting on a table. Before it would just go to that puzzle screen but now (with No Lock) it goes straight to the desktop and if it's in my pocket things get crazy.
Basically what I'm asking for is if No Lock could get rid of the "Swipe to Unlock" screen but not the "Puzzle Unlock" screen for SMS and missed calls that would be great.

the capacitive buttons on my 3d are ridiculously sensitive! i dont even have to make contact with the glass to make them register as a button press, hovering over them is enough....
its getting rather annoying and im hoping the screen protector i ordered would help it a bit but does anyone else have the same problem?

I have the same problem with mine too, and i have a ZAGG on it. It annoys the crap outta me. But what can we do?
even with the screen protector, i still find that hovering will prompt a keystroke. another qualm that i have with the phone is the placement of the sensitive power button up top.. being left handed, i seem to be finding it often by mistake.
That's the one thing I never liked about HTC phones, they love to use capacitive buttons. I prefer a mechanical one that can't so easily accidently be touched.
My capacitive buttons are also very sensitive (just like my power button ). Sometimes it is annoying when I bump/hover over the home key in the middle of what I'm doing. Over all, I think the entire screen is more sensitive than the Evo OG, because there have been a number of times when my screen has registered a touch when I thought I was only hovering.
Maybe there's something like a build.prop value that we can adjust for touch sensitivity when we get rooted.

The capacitive buttons are overly sensitive with my screen protector on, too. It seems like the buttons have too much juice running to them altogether. (Being too bright and too sensitive.)
On another note; Everyone always talks about their over-sensitive power button, but mine is completely the opposite and hard to find and push sometimes. Especially in the otterbox commuter case, which I'd have to recommend if you have that issue.
Just looking for some opinions here. I currently have a Samsung Focus which was my first true smartphone. I've used a bunch though including the S2 and the iPhone 4s. I honestly think windows is the best OS out of the 3. But the 2nd gen of windows phones don't have much to offer above the focus, so I don't see it being worth it to grab a new windows phone. Also the weak marketplace is a killer especially when my friends are constantly usings apps like ptt and various *** 'with friends' games.
But I had every intention on probably sticking with a new Windows phone until I heard of this phone. Just because it offers something regular phones don't.
Advice? I'd also like opinions on the size. Not how it feels in your hand, I could care less. But how it fits in pockets, the weight... whether or not you can carry it around like you could carry your old phone.
How's the music integration? Zune wasn't fantastic but I quite liked it. I use my phone every day as my mp3 player at the gym. Does it function well? And back to the last question on size... could I fit it in a pair of gym shorts? (not cardio)
How much better is browsing on it? Do you find yourself using the internet much on it, or still always using a laptop if you have it? I thought I'd be using it all the time with my focus, but with the 3.7" screen i never do unless I'm not around a computer.
And are there any integrated bonuses that this phone has that the SII or other similar smartphones don't have? (aside from the notes app).

Its a big phone, if you gonna wear it with gym shorts, depending on the activity it could slip out of you pockets. Phone is super light, easy to fit in pockets unless you wearing skinny's. Besides the s pen options, internet looks great on it, i use it often.
Music is like any other android, but i use power amp which i recommend. As far as advantages....SIZE...the screen is just bliss and typing on it is just great for big or little fingers. Hope this helps.

The only knock on Windows was the lack of app support. I really missed the apps and games that I had on Android that is why I went back. In the end I might go with Galaxy S2 or Skyrocket. The only reason I will leave the Note is that it is difficult to work the phone with one hand.
If you get passed that and the size the phone is great.

Yeah I'd use it for weight lifting only, so I won't be running around or anything. I weighed my focus and its over 5 ounces and supposedly the Note is about 6. So as long as it physically will fit in my pocket I think it should be ok.
What do you mean by 'aside from the pen options internet looks great'? Or were those two statements unrelated.

I definitely noticed the lack of 'smoothness' when messing around with the Galaxy 2 compared to my windows phone... and this is one reason I believe windows is superior... or at least has the potential to be. But there are so few things I actually do with my focus aside from text and listen to music. Screen is too small to browse, no apps to mess with. I also love customization and miss that factor with windows, so that might be fun to have an android.
Also I'm not a traveler or on the go user, so using with one hand shouldn't be an issue.
Can you guys fit the phone in all 4 jean pockets? Or only front, only back?
Think I'd get odd looks if I got a 4 point chest harness and secured it right in the center of my body? or is it not that big..

Hell YES! Even without ICS on this phone it crushes everything. Pending you know how to mess with it a bit with a root/overclock/rom yada yada yada. Ive already gotten into 5 convos with people about it since ive gotten it last week. And all 5 after getting it in their hand said they want one .

i'm not necessarily looking for you guys to decide for me but i had a few key questions and also was wondering if there are any main points i'd be missing leaving windows, or strong points i'd be gaining going to the note.
also i watched a video where the guy was using the stylus for writing and his finger for everything else. i'd imagine you can use the stylus to click on anything you could with your finger, right?
My opinion, the primary reason to move to the Note from the Focus is simply if you want the larger form and access to more apps. As you know, the Windows OS is very efficient and functional, aimed at getting the job done with some flair but not having to constantly fiddle with the the UserInterface. It is quicker and if you like it, I'd stick with it.
My college son has owned the Samsung Focus for over a year now and he really likes it...so do I. In fact on my prior Samsung 4'5" Infuse I often used the "launcher 7" app on my 'droid to simulate a windows phone. I'm playing with it now on my Note.
I can't carry my Note like my prior phones. But that is ok with me. I do put carry it in my front left/rear pockets but when I get it the car it comes out and sits in my car. But that's ok.
Gym shorts? it would probably fit but I certainly wouldn't exercise with it...although you could job/run with it using one of those armbands.
Browsing? I use the browser all the time, it's great. Rarely use my laptop.
The pen is cool...and I use it often to take notes, draw ideas, etc. However, I think an update is needed (and supposedly coming) to help smooth out the interface.

This is the best phone ever and Android is the best OS, period.
Opinions on size? Nothing but good, here's the highlights to spare you some time:
I have beg hands, fits me perfectly. Wife has tiny baby hands, she can hardly hold it.
You feel a little weird holding it to your head the first day or so, after that you dont notice.
Splitscreen...oh yea, one of my favorites. Go to landscape and some of your comms go split screen. Email is way easier when you have the lest on left and preview panel on right. Same for you text message screen. Theis is a great way to skim through.
Usability - The white model is a little slick on the back, can cause to slip out of your hand. Solution is a case that most use, but if your like me and like the naked look most of the time then the easy solution is full body skin. I applied a "armor Suit" which is a wet application. This typically leave a grippier almost rubber like feeling left. Awesome for the back, I can lay mine on my flat hand and almost stand it straight up and down before it slides. Some don't like the feeling on the screen but I don't mind it at all and actually prefer it now.
Pocketability- Easy, very easy actually. It's a very flat phone so I carry in back or front pocket with no problem at all. Folks that may have problems would be women who typically have smaller pockets on jeans and slacks and guys who wear skinny nut huggers.
Everyday use - Every app seems easier to use. Games are a blast since you have more room to use virtual sticks without covering most of the screen up (some awesome games on sale right now for $0.50)
Accessories - Suprisingly alot for as new as it is. Lots of metal back plates (got a green one on the way), leather cases, holsters, things of this nature. It helps that the international version has been out a little longer and there are accessories such as the dock that work perfectly fine with out AT&T version. Plus generic slips and pouches made for the Dell Streak 5 often fit our device, sometimes with very slight alterations. Generic batteries, docks, and chargers are out too. Most of these accessories are cheap. I bought a silicon cover, full film protector, 3 batteries, charger, and metal back cover, all for under $40 off amazon from several vendors and thats with shipping.
Development - It's quite slow at the moment, but it almost always is. We're all waiting for ICS (Ice Cream Sandwhich) wich some say is coming soon and others say its not. The phone functions fin with Gingerbread, it's just most of us Android addicts demand the newest OS by any means possible. It'll pick up, it always does.

PS the S-Pen will make you a master at "Draw Something" game.
Draw something was what initially gave me the idea for the phone Then I started looking into it and now I'm really thinking I'm going to get it. I definitely have to go into my local store first and try it out and put it in my pockets, etc. Hopefully I can get a deal too.
I actually hope ICS doesn't come out for a little while. I like change and being able to mess around with new updates. So since this will be my first droid it'll leave me plenty of time to mess around with it, then when ICS comes it'll feel like a whole new phone once again.
And with some android devices, can't you actually load windows 7.5 on it?
I throw iron all the time wearing basketball shorts aka Gym shorts or sweatpants using my note. I will time to time use my old ipod touch that has a cracked screen being i can toss it around without worry.
But i can easily use my Note without problem in my shorts while working out. I also am a goalie for a mens ice league and have it in my pocket while i dress.
As far as carrying it around normally. Its cold by me currently so i always am wearing one of my bubble zip up vests with a zip pocket i put it in.
I also have a bad habbit of actually holding my phone in my hand wherever i go like to the store etc, etc. So i have a bad habbit of putting it down and not grabbing it and walking away . Luckily i have my GF with me most of the time to "Re-trace" my steps or ask "Do you have your phone" lol. But ive put it in my Nike swishy pants before without a problem.
Some/most people mostly those who don't actually have the phone or have even held one make it out to be like its a foot long and 3"s thick lol. Out of 5 people that i have let hold the phone. Normal sized people not Giants lol. The first words out of their mouth are either wow is so nice or wow is so light and thin.
Its even getting to the point with me the phone is starting to look normal sized!!! 5.8" screen on the Galaxy Note 2? HAaha. there is a tiny bit of room to expand the screen and not the actual device itself it seems. Like for example a good 1/4" or so if they got rid of that ugly ugly AT&T stamp on the top!

It's two years old and theres maybe one minuscule mark on it. Will the note hold up like that or will it need a protector with long term use (long term s pen use as well)?
According to everything I've read - it has gorilla glass. But it's not nearly as good for being anti-scratch as say an iPhone 4s from what I've seen. I've had mine less than a week and have tiny scratches all over the screen. I had my iPhone 4 for a year and had barely anything noticeable.
I set it down (face down - stupid I know) on my desk at work once. Scratched the heck out of it. It's a smooth desk surface so I'm not sure WTF happened. Other than that just into an otherwise empty pocket.
So either I have one with a faulty display - or a screen protector should be considered a pre-purchase item.
Ok. I'll just get one and have them put it on in store. think the main reason i hate them is i always F them up.

Get an SGP GLAS-T screen protector they work better than anything out there. I had a SGP oliophobic film and after a week it was all scratched up from the S-pen I went an complained and they returned my money and told me about pre-order for Glas-t and it is the best screen protector ever. Got mine in yesterday. I was definitely a little pessimistic about how good a glass protector would be not to mention very concerned about the one chance to get it right install. Happy to say that the install was super simple (I have a couple tiny bubbles but nothing worth crying about) and so far it's excellent for writing on the screen.
We'll see how it lasts over time - but my initial impressions are very good!
My Galaxy Nexus died in a horrible freak accident, and SquareTrade ended up sending me a wad of cash to find another phone. Logically, I wanted to take the S3 for a test drive because it's the newest, hottest kid on the block (and I missed not having a MicroSD card).
I picked up my T-Mobile S3 in store today for the full retail price, and walked out excited as I always am to have a new toy in hand. Now, beware, I'm going to say some negative things about this phone, but that is because I want you guys to tell re-assure me that I'll learn to love it, or they'll get fixed etc because I really want to like this phone.
First off, the good things over my dead GNex:
Speed: Holy cow, that Krait CPU is blindingly fast. I knew the GNex was never a rocketship, but I wasn't aware of how slow it was until I played with the S3. Things run like butter, and JB(4.1) is only going to make that more amazing.
Camera: Yeah, the GNex camera sucks. This isn't as amazing as I hoped it would be, but it is nice to have something that instantly looks like crap.
Screen: It is a sweet screen, but I'm not sure if it is better than the GNex. If it is, I don't really see it (and can't compare side by side) and is still in amazing screen.
Now, the things I don't like:
SMS: WHY THE **** does my SCREEN turn on EVERY TIME an SMS comes in??? WHERE IS THE SETTING TO KILL THAT?!
Lockscreen: The "barely touch" to unlock is a joke. (Yes, I know you can replace it)
The body: Man, that blue looks pretty, but holy balls is that phone a pain to hold on to in 90 degree heat. What's the point of making a gorgeous phone that you have to keep in a case?
Build quality: It honestly doesn't feel as "solid" as the gnex, but has anyone had any quality issues with theirs yet?
Bloatware: I thought the Sensation was bad when I bought it, but this phone has so many apps that I never want to use, it's not even funny. I spent the first half hour going through and disabling applications.
Signal Quality: I drive a certain stretch of road that is hell on connections. I've had HTC's, Samsungs, etc drop out. It's just a great place to test radios and phones... Well, this one? Drops as much as the old HTC G2 did, if not more. Absolutely impossible to keep a signal. Now, thinking it was a bad signal day, I popped my micro SIM in an adapter and back into my HD2 and drove the road again... This time? No issue.
Home button: Really? A hard to press, narrow button for the most used button on the phone? I worry about dropping the phone, as it is so light, I have to hold it tightly with one hand to press the button.
So I know this may seem petty, but I'm really hoping you guys can convince me one way or another. Sure, this phone will always be faster than my GNex, but a GNex is half the price, and for me, in many ways feels like a better phone.

Another thing I've notice, the screen can't figure out if it wants to be dim or bright. It'll sit there and go from one extreme to the other over a minutes time. Never in the middle.

I also had a Nexus Prime and I would of kept it if it had an sd card slot and WAY better camera & that's where the S3 comes in. Sure it has bloat and touchwiz isn't the best but AOSP is on its way & with it, improvements. As for build quality, I like it better than the nexus. Signal wise I was have at least 3 bars so I'm happy. I do agree though that the unit gets quite hot sometimes, but overall I love this device
Higher the processor speed the hotter it runs. You could limit the processor speed but you lose the blazing speed.. but I also lose the blazing heat. LOL.
As for the build quality its not bad. It doesn't feel like it'll break when I try to bend the unit. The gorilla glass is pretty strong but its not shatter proof. Don't drop it! Already seen a few shattered screens.
The software issues are just that.. all just software which is easy to change either by using replacement programs like handcent SMS or rooting then replacing the rom or disabling and removing the bloat. All that should matter is the hardware and if you're happy with the performance, look, feel, battery life, and reception.

Yes please but on a screen protector. Dont trust the gorilla glass its bad. they should just take gorilla glass out of the specs for the phone. it doesnt work. i dont care how many youtube videos you watch that says it does.... it doesnt

I've never had issues with scratches on my Gorilla glass, even on my tablet which gets abused in the shop while I'm working on things. Then again, my HD2 never got a scratch either.

So Handcent can fix the screen on issue? GoSMS so far hasn't been any help.

You nailed it, the camera and the MicroSD slot are the two most compelling things about this phone for me.

Yes handcent fixes that screen on issue if you disable popup notifications. That's the kind of notification that shows a dialog box with a quick reply option.
If disabled then the screen doesn't turn on and the SMS stays in the notification area.
Infact you can enable the pop-up notification but choose to disable screen on for pop-ups. That works too.

Are you sure you don't have the eye/face detection turned on? My screen does that at work (I have mine set on) and even though I'm not directly stairing at it, it picks up my eyes (I have my phone placed below my monitor). Sometimes it bugs me enough just to turn the thing face down.
or maybe it can be the autolight sensor.

My major concern is with the home button. What on earth were they thinking?
I'm a firm believer that AOSP on this phone will make it a true winner with the on-screen navigation buttons enabled and the capacitive and physical ones disabled. Maybe we could repurpose the big ol physical one to do something else in the future.

Yeah, I turned off a lot of the gesture/motion things right out of the box, as some just didn't seem natural at all. I could never get the whole unlocking motion one to work either. That was annoying for a bit.

The sad thing is, as much as I'd love to have on screen buttons like the Gnex, then we're stuck with that long chin being nonfunctional. I guess it wouldn't be bad if the back and menu button never lit up and were completely disabled. Possible use the home button as a shutter button then? Who knows.
It really does blow my mind how they did a physical button for the home button of all things.

I loved the ones on the HD2. However, they weren't as difficult to press, and the phone was a lot heavier. It made it so when you pushed them, the phone didn't want to flip out of your hand. The SGS3 is so smooth and lightweight, I don't even try to hit the home button one handed anymore.

Although I have a trackpad on the g2 I use it to turn the phone on so I love the home button on the s3 since a lot of times I leave the phone on the desk or table during lectures and stuff and its just convenient to turn the phone on that way but like some said its hard to press without fearing of it falling out of ur hand due to the large size and thinness

Maybe you have smaller thumbs? For me, I have a big wide thumb, and I have to press with enough force to make my thumb "go into the recessed" area to completely depress the button.
Hi all, sorry my first post is asking for help, but I'm lost on this one.
It doesn't happen all the time, but I randomly get a dead spot on the bottom right corner of my phone.
It happens when I touch the app drawer, and the L key when I'm texting. It only randomly acknowledges I touched the screen.
Restarting the phone usually helps, but does that mean it's software or hardware?
Should I have it replaced?
Stock VZW Note II, no apps installed.

It was replaced for a bad digitizer.
When using Multitouch visibility test, if you put more then 4 fingers on the screen, it locked up the phone requiring removal of the battery.
Perhaps instead of software, could it be heat?
It sounds like a dead/dying pixel to me. If it is only there on certain screens, then probably not, but if its there on say the boot screen or something, then I'd take it back.

It's when I go to tough the screen.
Like if I hit the L key on the keyboard during a text message, it will only register a touch like 50% of the time.
Or if I touch the app drawer, I have to hit it multiple times to open it up.
The actual screen is perfect, no dead or stuck pixels at all.

I'd return to Verizon, especially if you're not rooted so it won't be any trouble returning to stock etc.
It's probably mildly annoying to you now and it's only going to get worse over time. If there's no physical damage to the phone I don't see them giving you any trouble.

No damage at all, and I actually went through 3 screen protectors before I figured out it wasn't them.
Kinda bummed I have to drive 45 miles to return this damn thing though.

I actually called them, and they told me to just take it back to the store in case the replacement has issues.
Which is troubling to hear.
I have a youtube video demonstrating the problem, but I won't let me post it so ohwell.
Will have to wait til I get 10 posts.
Basically, using multitouch visibility test, I roll my finger around the bottom right corner while never lifting it off, and it won't recognise my trying to touch the specific spot.
After I life my finger and move it around the screen it will recognise the spot. It's very random.

After further messing around in Multitouch Visibility test, I can replicate this all over the screen, but it's easiest to do at the bottom right corner where L shows up on the keyboard.

Nah, it was a bad digitizer they said.

When you notice this are you holding the S-pen? I noticed if you get the pen near the screen (close enough for air hover to work) that the screen and buttons quit working to touch. For a little while I thought the home button was having problems, turned out the way I was holding the pen would result in it being placed near the screen when I hit the button.

The main reason I noticed it was when I was texting.
Whenever I went to type words like sleep, or talk, they would be missing the letter L.
Or when I would go to open the app drawer, and it would only work half the time.
All while the pen was in the phone.
The lockup doesn't sound normal but as far as dead spots if you have a screen protector on have you tried removing it? Marginal screen protectors will cause touch input issues.

I like it too...
Because it is hard to reach without changing holding position for most people. I need to hold the phone tight on both sides for my index to access the sensor but in this position I can't use my phone coz my thumb is not long enough to touch the other end of screen so everytime I have to move my hand up and down to unlock and use. The back of phone is very slippery and when my focus is somewhere else there is a chance the phone might slip and fall while unlocking if I am not careful. Pixel/6p like sensor position would've worked the best for note.

i guess we handle differently, i always pickup phone holding it both sides with one hand but then soon after unlock i ease the grip and start holding phone however i wish
It's in the perfect place for me too. The bixby button is in a bad place personally, because I still tap it accidentally holding my phone. I just got a new bike mount for my phone and the sides hit the button too if I center the phone on the holder.

Works great and feels natural if you hold the phone right handed, but I hold my phone left handed. Wish I held my phone in my right hand and I would be golden then.

It just worries me sometimes because it's so shiny and expensive . Probably wont mind after using it for a month or so. It's not a dealbreaker but I hate it when a product gets everything right except "that one thing".

apparently a lot of people have small hands or no finger muscle memory......or those people seems to hold their phones all the way at the bottom to the point that their thumb is at least an inch or more below the power bottom. for small hands people if their thumb is on the power button then index finger will fall right on the fingerprint reader or for people with a bit larger hands if thumb is at the bottom or right below the power button then index finger would land right on the reader. but people hold their phones differently than others and there will always be people who complain just to complain.
coming from the v20 I find that the fingerprint reader placement on the Note 8 is actually in the perfect spot for me, its easy to reach with one hand or even if holding the phone with both hands.
i dont have any issues either - for a regular/medium sized hand user. fingerprint registers at least 95% of the time with no issues with reach.
Personally I don't even use fingerprint (face recognition works most of the time) that much and placement doesn't bother me, until I use the phone while driving, which is often. The way my phone is mounted face recognition doesn't work, fingerprint sensor is out of reach and typing passwords in heavy traffic I usually find myself in, could be hair raising. My car has BT, so it unlocks while connected , but my wife's car doesn't have BT, so have to risk accident or ticket, sometimes both. But I love my N8 and sensor is on my "could be done better, but I can live with it" list. Sometimes I ask myself why I'm locking my phone and from whom, but that's another topic.

I use Iris scanner primarily but later at night when I'm in bed I prefer using the fingerprint scanner so I don't blind myself or my wife who's sitting beside me in bed.

The placement is fine for me but I think it would be better if it were centered. Just so that it's as easy for left-handed ppl. Same way I would like samsung to let us turn the gear s3 screen upside down for those who like to wear their watches on the right wrist.
I have smaller hands, and it works perfect for me. In fact , now after having the phone for a few days, I can work it lefty or righty. Kinda like it better now, didn't think I would say that , but man that big unblocked screen is nice.

honestly i dont know.. the only time i use the fingerprint sensor is to set my fingerprint.
I also setup IRIS recognition. most of the time before i move my finger to the sensor it already detected my eyes and unlocked the phone.

I had the same opinion when i had not actually used the phone(or an s8), but since getting a note 8 it really is great placement IMO. its easy and way faster than any other unlock. TBH i only recently realised i didnt have to actually wake the phone to use the fingerprint haha i was too used to pressing power and then scanning like on my old s7edge.
The placement is great for me, i practically unlock the phone as its slideing out of my pocket like i would any other, but with the added functionality of not actually needing to wake the phone it is actually faster than it was on the old models with the sensor on the front.
speaking from a pull out of pocket senario, i think it is probably easier to drop your phone pulling it out and unlocking it from the front, this new placement you can slide it out with full grip on the phone.
what floats your boat, sinks others! I hate it. And if Samsung truly believed it works, why place the sensor back on the front (target future S9/Note 9)?

It has nothing to do with hand size. It cracks me up when new phones come out and people start giving their physical stats as if they're looking for a date.
My phone is usually lying face up. It was much easier to reach over to the table, placing my thumb on the sensor while grasping the phone. It was almost a single move.
Then there were the times it would be on my desk at work standing on my desk with the vertical kickstand. I could simply press the button, holding my thumb on it unlocking it. Didn't have to turn the phone or even pick it up from the desk.
So basically, it was easier due to the fact that the phone could be unlocked without even grasping it.
Yep, pefect place.
The center on the LG phone never felt natural to me.
