If you update to 2.1 then it's meant to work. There's a guide on Modaco on how to do it.
I am only passing on information that I have searched (mainly through Modaco) for and tried and tested. This is by no means my creation or discovery! And also...dont sue me if you mess your phone up!
First of all, you must be rooted!
Best thing to do before installing apps2sd is to do a factory data reset.
There has been discussions on whether apps2sd overwrites the phones factory defaults. I think the problem lays in an old script of apps2sd, perhaps there is a new on out... I couldnt tell ya! Anyhow, this is not really a problem if you want apps2sd permanently on your phone though. So remember, start from scratch, reset your data.
1. Partition your sdcard and make 3 partition on it.
Example: sdcard is 1 GB
1st partition in FAT32 600mb
2nd partition in ext2 300mb
3th partition as swap 100mb
Im not sure if the swap partition is needed but I made it anyway.
2. Copy the apps2sd folder to the root of the sdcard.
Example: /sdcard/app2sd/
3. Connect your phone from ADB and type this command :
adb shell
su (approve with superuser aplication in your phone)
sh /sdcard/app2sd/app2sd.sh
After a while your phone will reboot.
4. Now check how much internal memory you have (I had 135mb after my clean install of apps2sd. I have never had that much after a factory reset, a hard reset or a flash).
And there you have it folks!

swap like a virtual memory may be.
i think phone need a virtual memory for app2sd.
Swap is like a linux swap (as in swap space for the RAM), but from what I read, it's not actually needed

Hey, I have an unlocked LG Optimus, if I set it to factory default will that lock it again? Or can I do this without setting my phone to factory default?
Old post but for reference's sake, am posting this here.
I used MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition for making the partition.
I had a 16GB microSDHC but I made only a 512mB ext2 and left the rest as FAT32.
GT540 was designed to handle only 140mB of usable internal memory. So, making a huge ext2 partition will considerably slow down your phone. I would recommend to keep it below 512mB. Most often, you won't install more than 200-300mB worth of apps. Most games have their extra data downloaded to the SD and only apk and dex files reside in the phone.
And, I found that Link2SD was better than apps2sd. I never used apps2sd because by the time I wanted apps2sd, Link2SD was out. Check it out.

why dont you just put 2.2 or 2.3 on your phone. the roms are available in the developer forum.
I found installing cm7 made it work. Although i lost the functionality of my camera app2sd worked other than that it is a great rom.
I agree, link2sd is far more better than apps2sd.
Also u need to upgrade ur firmware from 1.6 and 2.1 to higher roms, 2.3 is good.
So to fully use ur android,root your device, install a rom manager, then clockworkmod and superuser, there you can enjoy.

i just rooted my phone yesterday and i am quite new. I am using the kimera 1.8 and it says app2sd is automatic (i guess) I have partition my class 6 4gb sd card but then when i install apps, the memory of the phone is the one that decreases... Any idea how should i do this ?

There is a section on how to check if apps2sd is working correctly in BTDAG's guide linked in my signature. Bookmark it!
i already check it but however, my internal memory still decreases when apps are installed.. Does this mean that the app2sd does not work ?

no it doesn't. what does the apps2sd check say? i made it. it tells you the truth. if it tells it works, then it works.
it says /dara/app is a symlink..........ok
/darta.app-private is a symlink.........ok
apps2sd is working without dalvik-cache

dalvik-cache resides in the internal memory, and therefore takes up space on your phone.
if i ever get the guy that made people think apps2sd doesn't use any internal memory, i'll do really bad things to him...
so how do i move my dalvik-cache to my sd ?
you can edit the apps2sd script, or you can ask your rom dev to do it for you. or you can just live with the fact that dalvik-cache uses a little internal memory, it is not gonna eat up all of it. how much free space do you have left?

Your options would be scripts like DarkTremor or (the slightly more user-friendly) Link2SD.
But be warned: both are not 100% stable... I've finally removed DarkTremor after a lot of issues: How about upgrading to a custom ROM instead?

I dont want to start new topic so I use this one to describe my problem.
I read a lot of webs to find solution but here's comes some problems with that.
I've got Samsung Gio S5560 and 4GB SD card. After creating 2 primary partitions FAT32 and ext2 link2sd says that "no space left on device" and i cannot do anything. Even when I use 2GB card or create partition f.e. ext3 it doesn't works.
Can anyone help with that ?

I'm not sure how these scripts determine which partition to use... have you tried partitioning through ClockworkRecovery? Maybe they need the partitions in a certain order or (more likely) some other requirement. CR would very likely take any such requirements into account.
P.S. Your English sounds fine to me, but this doesn't come from a native speaker either, so...
I used to create partitions MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition. On YT there ale some tutorials so I used them. At the beginning I create FAT32 and then ext2. Maybe at the morning I try some new configs with my SD card.
I have a HTC Legend running on NewSense RC4. I have App2SD installed. I've changed the default install location to SD Card via " pm shell setInstallLocation 2". Though I've done all this, I have only around 2-3 MB space always. I're removed the data and cache for many apps. Yet, this is the situation. And I only have 52 APPS.
Please tell me another method to increase the amount of space. Please don't sugesst me to flash to another ROM.
I also read somewhere about partitions on SD card or something. Can you please enlighten me on this?

Partitioning quite simply means splitting your microSD card into 2 or more PARTS (hintART-itioning). Often times, partitioning is used to create a separate space for apps2SD or data2ext. The simplest way to partition is to download rom manager (you must have root and be able to boot into recovery) and choose the option "partition sd card" choose 0 swap , then choose 512mb partitioning space! WARNING: this will delete EVERYTHING on your memory card, so either turn back, or backip tour mem. Card! After it is partitioned, you can proceed to add apps to the new partition of your SD card. Note this will, like I said, split your memory card space! Ex:
If you hav a 1 GB (1024 MB) Memory card, after partitioning, your memory for files will decrease to 512 mb, while 512 mb is reserved for your apps!
Just a word of advice from a fellow XDA-er!
I am not aware whether or not the HTC legend runs Cyanogenmod7 or not, but it would be well worth the flash to use it. Unless you are in love with the Sense UI (because CM7 uses 2.3.3 Gingerbread) then come on over to the Cyan side . Data2ext takes your ENTIRE data section of your phone (that part that holds the meat and bones of an app, PLUS the huge apk file) and puts it in that partition you created. Data2ext is simply a flashable script that puts that partition in action. After flashing the script via recovery, just go to your terminal emulator app on your phone and on the first line, type "su" (without quotes) and then type "data2ext --enable" (exactly as typed without quotes) and vuala, your REAL data section on your phone is literally virtually UNTOUCHED! Which makes your phone a lot faster. There is also a script that let's you choose the size of your partition (no more than 2 GB is strongly recommended) but I haven't used that script just yet, but will soon! Data2ext is WAY bettr than apps to SD! I know that I did way more than just answer your question, but I wanted to answer, plus give a better alternative should you choose to use it

2. Will I reclaim ALL my internal memory?
3. Is this is a sure shot method to install AS MANY apps as we need (the only condition being you that much SD card partition space) ?

1. Method will only work on rom that support it.
2. You will get a lot of internal memory back but data will remain internal unless you move app's data to sd-ext also.
3. Method trick the phone into thinking the sd-ext is part of your internal memory so you'll be able to install a good amount of apps.
4. Search Dark Tremor's a2sd or S2E in the market.

3. Yes, so far, I hav somewhere around 85 apps installed (and that's with 512 mb only, with 150-200mb still left

P.S. - If you want to have the freedom of installing up to 2GB partition space for apps, use data2ext-v4. If you want the already preset 512mb, then use data2ext-v7 (it is thoroughly explained in the post)

Many people state that they use darktremor a2sd on Cyanogenmod, and I'm wondering why?
Darktremor's objective is to move apps to SD, right?
Well, Cyanogenmod also allows us to do the same, right again?

I'm also wondering about the difference if I was to use darktremor's script. I noticed the default Apps2SD would not completely transfer the app to the sd card (for example, if I transferred a 20mb game, it's reported that around 1mb is still left in the internal memory), hence the amount of apps I could install on my ace is very limited. Would using darktremor's script solve this?
Apps2SD (the one in Froyo and CM) moves most or some (depending one the application) data under /sdcard/.android_secure and /sdcard/Android/.
It'll leave behind some files in the internal memory.
A2SD (and S2E and Link2SD) moves the ENTIRE application (app files, data files, dalvik-cache) to a separate partition on the SD Card, then links the apks to the filesystem (linking is Linux term for making a shortcut).
Another advantage of this is the bugs present in native apps2sd -- such as widgets not appearing after a reboot -- are not present in a2sd method. This is because of a mount script executed during the booting process.

that's why when you use apps2sd(one that you can use from the app info menu) just moves a little part of the app to sd card while scripts like a2sd moves the whole data to the ext partition..
But I have to create a partition before I flash dt or link2sd? Or it is a virtual partition that the program creates? Is it really worth to use dt or link2sd?

Yes, you need to create a partition on your SD card (512MB is more than enough). The easiest way is to just partition through CWM Recovery (under Advanced, I think). It'll automatically create an ext3 partition of your choice size (also swap, if you want swapspace).
Don't be deterred by ext3 because it's lower than ext4; it's actually much more stable.
Is it worth it? Very, if you know what you're doing. As long as you don't mess around with the partition, say when you plug in USB mass storage mode to the computer, it should be fine.
My ace never appears on my cpu as a drive. Dunno what is the prob.
Anyway... how do I format my sd after it is partioned? To delete the partition ..

Darktremor's a2sd and CM kernel...
I've had some damage to my phone. More details over at my post in General questions.
My damaged unit. SK17i My consideration for replacement. MK16i. From Xperia Mini Pro to Xperia Pro. (For the price difference, it seems for the hardware upgrade to get the bigger unit.)
My basic setup? Custom Kernel with root and a2sd.
Problem. There seems no Custom Kernel but one... bbooff's. (Waiting to here if it also will support the a2sd of darktremor.)
I came across CM being available already for the MK16i.
Problem. I just use root & a2sd. Suites my simple needs. I don't do Custom Roms at present. My need is for a stable communication device.
When I got my SK17i. I read that there was a clash between CM and a2sd. Has this then been cleared up? (Fully? For those CM users who may know. I'm a noob to Android.)
Is it possible, from instructions I read on getting CM on the MK16i there's a CM kernel that must be installed 1st, to just use the CM kernel and Stock Rom?
I am just thinking maybe there will be some clash here? Then maybe not? I know the forum instructions did clearly say stock Kernel is incompatible with CM. That may be about some features CM wants to use. Stock Rom simply may not access any 'bonus' features of CM Rom but will there be a problem otherwise?

My setup and use is pretty basic, pretty simple and no, I do not want those apps2sd programs that don't use an Ext partition and don't 'fool' the system into thinking it's running the programs on the system partition.
Well, looking for information. I would rather get the MK16i. Nice bit of kit, but I also firmly want the same basic little setup I've got here but there seems at the moment to be few Custom Kernel's for this device and I am not even about to try to roll my own. Wouldn't know where to begin.

It says that nAa kernel has "Swap" function. CUrious, I tried several methods.
Firstly, I tried to use swapper from android market. Seems like it's no use, since typing "free" on terminal emulator shows "0" for swapping (swap data is created already on my SD card). Not working, I uninstalled it.
Then, somebody told me to use swapper 2 since it's working nicely on him. Strangely enough, my market said it's not compatible with my phone.
Third, I tried to create a linux swap file on my SD card with 200 MB size using partition manager. And my phone runs lag like hell. So, I finally delete the partition again and wipe factory reset etc.
My question is : How do I turn swap things on ?

Until recently (before I created linux swap partition on my SD card and finally erased it again), I never create an ext4 partition on my SD card. Now, I'm trying to use it. What is the difference between using an ext4 partition and not ?

All this adds up in total bandwidth use.
And then the speeds when reading and writing from the card are not really up to the task.
Even my Big x10i was not up to the task with a class 8 SD
The best would be for developers to partition a small piece of 'internal' storage to allow for a swap file.
