[Q] Low on space - Database storage is getting low error message - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is my 2nd Samsung Vibrant, and I'm getting the same error message as before:
A red SD card in the notification bar on top with the message "Low on space - Database storage is getting low error message"
This phone is NOT rooted and does not have any type of task killer running. It is running the stock version of the OS.
When I check storage I have the following:
SD Card Total Space 1.84GB Available Space - 417MB
Phone Storage Total space 12.78GB Available Space 12.52GB
Application Storage Available Space 1.59GB
Running Services shows only the usuals...SWYPE, facebook etc
Available: 23MB_123... Other:53MB in 4 services
I have already returned a vibrant because of this same issue. I def do NOT have too many apps installed.
The biggest app is Dolphin Browser HD and it was using 12mb...I've cleared cache on all apps that I can clear cache on and still have this issue.
I have rebooted, reseated SIM, SD, Battery numerous times with no luck.I have even taken it to the t-mobile store where I purchased the phone and they have even replaced my SIM card.
I do not have an abundance of text messages stored (17 conversations as I have frequently deleted them)
I'm getting real tired of this....Any ideas?

I heard some where on the forums that dolphin browser doesn't work with our vibrants too well. Maybe uninstall that app and see if the problem continues.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

I've uninstalled Dolphin and a ton of other apps...still the same error....this is nonsense. I know another vibrant owner but he doesnt have this issue with dolphin.

Is there a way to look at error logs or any kind of logging the phone may be doing?

Have you tried a different microSD?

Yes, I tried to swap out the micro sd card from my old G1 with the one I got with the Vibrant. I've also exchanged the phone once and seen the error on both phones. I can only assume the error is caused by an application I installed on both phones,...Pandora, Dolphin, mixzing etc etc

Sounds to me like you need to get the phone fresh back to stock, and install one app at a time till you find the one that's causing the problem. If you have root and adb, you could do a "du -h /data/data" and see if something is dumping a ton of data in there. Check /data/dbdata as well. It's got to be something you are installing or doing though, I've never seen a problem like this and I hack on my Vibrant.
And I don't think the SD has anything to do with it, run without one installed for a while. You don't need one, you have 16GB of internal flash, you can live without an external SD for a little while.

Sunny...i do have the same problem! have u got the solution? Have no idea...

Im getting the same error
I have shoot me running so i can grab the exact error whenever it comes up next. It tells you to delete call records, calendar and other things. After the warning comes up the phone is extremely laggy and requires a reboot in some instances.
I was about to start my own post but decided to search first. I even went in and deleted all but today on my call history

I'd say /data/dbdata is getting full. Check with root explorer. Did you do the old lag fix? If so, revert and install one of the newer versions. If not, you need to figure out what app is loading lots of data in there. "du -h /data/dbdata" post the results and maybe we can help.

Whats the best Terminal and Root Explorer app? I have been out of the game since the G1. I was on CM2 i think if that tells you how far back its been and i always used their terminal/root explorer.

I like sufbs, but there are a bunch. For terminal, I like connectbot. For this stuff, a computer with adb would be best so you can cut and paste the output to the forum.

From what i can tell i think its my contacts..... for some reason Gmail is syncing just email adresses with no phone numbers and visa versa. Also i have found that under my section for "john" i have John then 4 linked contacts that are unknown. I wonder if this is causing the disruption. This all happened today as well as my Facebook links no longer linked to contacts.
EDIT: I deleted 241 of my random contacts that were emails i had made i will report back later to see if this happens again.
EDIT2: The red memory card came back , this time i clicked on it and deleted the bloated 80meg contact section didnt seem to delete contacts off my phone however will update if this fixes it.

Try not using facebook contact sync. I've heard of people having problems with it. At least it should help you figure or if that's the problem. Or I suppose you could move the contacts db to another location. I have a fairly busy gmail contacts list and haven't seen nearly that level of data being used for it.

After deleting the bloated Contacts i haven't gotten the error (i was sure to export the list from Google prior to deleting it) Also removing the Facebook Apps ability to sync and only leaving stock brought back the Contacts facebook updates.

Hey,
I had the same problem on my galaxy s, it seemed that the Samsung app store caused the problem with me. I tried downloading asphalt 5 when the phone prompted that the database memory was low. I left the program and tried different things, only to find out that i just had to cancel the download in the samsung app store, then it deleted the temp files and everything worked fine again.
Hope this helps?

I have hard reset my phone twice due to this problem.. The last time, I downloaded cachemate for root, and clearing the cache worked for a couple days the couple of times I used it.. Today i cleared the cache and it didn't work...Manually cleared contacts, and the error went away, but I lost all of my contact pics....Hopefully they will resync from gmail....I don't get it.. didn't have this problem with G1!
Need a custom Froyo ROM!

When I clicked on the red icon it brought up a list of programs and how much space they were using...
It said contacts was 105mb. The biggest of the other apps was around 4 mb....
I click on delete contacts which emptied them off my phone and the warning went away.. I will post back here if it returns. It has been returning every day or so when I was clearing it by clearing the cache.

I'm getting the low on space warning only after doing GPS tracking...sucks!

3.2.1 Update Released in Japan

http://www.sony.jp/support/tablet/info2/20111110.html
No details on what's changed (apart from saying "improvements to stability of system software' which could mean anything) and whether they've fixed the annoying wifi disconnect bug (and hopefully media discovery on sd-card2).
Yeah, I received the update notification this morning (mine is Japan set). Update file size is quite small - around 19MB. Already updated my STS to 3.2.1. No significant changes that I can find. I do feel that it's more smoother navigating menus and launching apps. Will see in a few days if there's any changes with Wi-Fi disconnection problem.

I'm not sure if I understand the wifi disconnect bug. Are you complaining that the wifi turns off when the screen is locked? Because it's set up to do that from the factory and can be changed in the settings menu under wifi > advanced I believe...

PlayStation Network currently under maintenance.
Fixed
I had this same issue, after updating none os the PSEN apps worked. If I tried to access PSN store, music unlimited or videos unlimited, they all gave error 80080018. First thing I did was factory reset but that did not help. So, the next thing I tried was reformatting (erasing) all storage. Well, as much as I did not want to since I lost everything, it worked. Once my tablet was clean, I can now log in to PSN store and music/videos unlimited with no issues.
So, anyone having this problem just erase storage and fasctory reset, you will be good to go. Just, make sure you save your pics, music, docs, etc. somewhere like an external hard drive.

[Q] New Photon 4g user needs rom help

I bought the Photon 4g about 3 weeks ago and finally got around to flashing some different roms last week. I'm rooted but my bootloader is still locked so that narrows me options down to basically Skinny and Rocko from what I understand. I tried Rocko last week and enjoyed but wanted to test drive others also so today I downloaded skinny14gedition.zip and flashed it. I first did factory reset, wiped cache partition, and dalvik. While it seems different, it still says Rocko under build. Did I miss something? Regardless, it seems really quick but has some issues.
If I try to type a name in from the dialer and call from that it says, "The application Contacts Storage (process com.motorola.contacts) has stopped..." and will not call.
After successfully making a call (either via voice or from contacts), when I end that call it says "The process com.android.phone has stopped....".
Finally, I can't move anything to my sd card using App2SD. It merely says, "Failed to move application."
Sorry for being long winded but I'll forget if I don't put everything out there at once. Thanks to anyone that can or will help.
Edit: I got to looking closer and I thought it was different this time because it has zeam launcher as an option whereas it didn't last week. So it looks to be the same thing but partially corrupted? Is that even possible? Thanks again.
Ok, I finally reflashed skinny after formatting as opposed to just wiping the cache, etc. Seems to work now with the exception of I can't use my calendar. When I try to add the calendar widget to a home screen I get the message, "The application Calendar Storage (process com.android.calendar) has stopped..." f/c. Anyone have any ideas on this one? Thanks.

Memory Leak in Stock 4.1.1 (XXDLK1)

My totally stock (not rooted, never been near ODIN) S3 is suffering from a memory leak/issue that's requiring me to reboot my phone every 24 hours or so. I'm wondering if anyone else has faced this issue, or if anyone with any technical knowledge has any suggestions for how to fix it?
After 24 hours, this is what Applications Manager / Running looks like:

See all those processes in a start of Restarting...?
Looking at "Cached Processes" will show only 1, maybe 2 processes. Returning to the homescreen is slow and has redraw issues.
As soon as I restart the phone, no processes are restarting anymore, and the list of cached processes has 10-15 items in it.
The symptoms to me scream "memory leak!" but I'm not sure how to progress to debug what's causing the issue. I have installed Terminal Emulator and also connected to the phone via ADB, but there's nothing terrible I can see in the list of processes that are taking up lots of memory. I can't see anything bad in logcat, but cat /proc/meminfo shows that I'm running out of memory.
Can anyone with a good understanding of Linux/Android provide suggestions on how I can debug what is taking up all the memory? There must be some tools via ADB or shell commands I can run to get a better understanding of what's going on.
I'm also curious to hear if anyone else is running into this issue. If it's just me, it could well be an app that I have installed causing the problem.
Thanks!

Probably a software bug, 4.1.2 is out, why not update? It works wonders for me.

Thanks for replying - good to know I'm not going insane here
I experienced the same issue with stock unrooted 4.1.1. The problem is caused by some of the Samsung bloatware that ships with the phone as standard, this stuff is always running and cannot be stopped without rooting. I rooted and disabled a ton of it with Titanium Backup and all the memory issues I had were solved and as a side effect the phone is a lot less laggy. I highly recommend rooting anyway, it gives many advantages with one of the most important ones being the ability to control exactly what runs on your phone and when.

Yes I'm familiar with rooting + more (If you look at my history you'll notice I released a few kernels for the Xperia Ray that I compiled. )
I'm trying to figure out exactly what programs/processes are the problem. Can you give me a list of those you disabled? Was there any particular one you disabled that seemed to fix the problem?
Thanks!

If Samsung bloatware is the culprit, then why it sows more memory when booted? Please note that same number of processes (which you are calling as bloatware) are running irrespective of whether the phone is booted freshly or used for sometime... the problem is with memory leak which this ROM is unable to manage.

We're not entirely certain how Samsung apps (especially ones that aren't disable-able typically) are interacting with the system; so we can't really be certain of this. Android also does tend to hide some stuff from the services screen.
Anyway, I have a friend with this problem and we can't really find a reason for it; might go about disabling as much as we can (without root I mean) and see if we have any luck. On a sidenote, two others with identical phone/carrier/rom combinations without an issue.
The problem seems to be that some of the Samsung system processes tend to leak ram after some time. Which ones specifically is somewhat unclear, however I've had good results by disabling the kies process from running. Kies exists as both an android apk and an actual daemon process run during startup from init.rc. Disabling the apk and changing the permissions on the daemon so it cannot execute are quite effective methods of stopping it. I also disabled things like S Suggest, Video Hub and a whole bunch of others. Anything useful such as the fm radio, S Calendar, S Memo etc I leave enabled. I can give an exact list of things I've disabled if you like.

The kies daemon is called kiesexe and is located in /system/bin. Disable it by removing it's execute permission, then disable the kies related apk's and reboot. I shall post a list soon when I'm back home.

This requires root though, and I don't want to root my phone (I know, call me crazy)
Also, from what I've seen kies daemon doesn't actually take up any memory, just leaves a lot of processes behind (that all share the same segment of shared memory)
You cannot claim that a phone is totally stock, and then post a picture including processes like winamp, facebook, etc. Stock means its only running the software that it would be running after a fresh wipe.
I never had this problem under 4.1.1, so its either
* A kernel fault in the stock firmware itself
* A faulty application you have downloaded
* A leaking service process that won't appear on the running processes list.
Okay, 2nd person on a i9300T stock ROM (there aren't that many after all) with this horrible leak (one of the previously okay people I mentioned). Looks like the early jellybean builds just suck (well, more than we originally thought).

Sorry but I disagree with you. Stock to me, and I think most people, means the stock ROM that it came with, no mods, not rooted etc. Otherwise where do you draw the line? Is it still stock by your definition if I've taken 5000 photos and put 2000 contacts in the phone? Synced it with 50 Gmail accounts?

Yes, I'm aware of that. What I'm trying to track down is which one of those it is though. So I'm asking people what do they suggest so I can do that.
I'm fairly sure it's not going to be an app - apps run within the VM so killing them off would release all that memory. Much more likely is that it's a native ARM process (kiesexec for example) that's at fault. It could be an app I've downloaded though, there's no doubt about that.

Any suggestions on how to debug it? Without root there's still a number of nodes in /proc I'm able to read from - suggestions for where to look to debug some more?
Cheers!
(a noob here)
a reset may help
Still, if you can't fix it , take it to Samsung for a new one.

Thanks for the reply, but I'm after advice for how to debug the issue. Not suggestions on how to fix it, what to do etc
I hoepd a couple of experienced devs might be able to suggest what things to look at (dmesg, vmstat, last_kmsg etc)
Please, no more replies of "I don't have it, reset it, flash the latest fw"
I want to understand what the problem is!
Cheers,

The best solution (if not the only) is to freeze the application, and to unfreeze it whenever you're ready to use it. I know there was a MIUI program that allowed users to stop applications from starting up automatically (both boot and idle operation), and would only be operational whenever the user opened up the program manually... But I don't know if there is anything similar to that now.

Now to figure out why Android System is #1 on my battery stats. Solve one problem and another pops up.

I'm thinking it might be the memory card. I was thinking of removing it, saving the files. formatting it then putting it back in the phone since it was in my old S3.
While I was sleeping Samsung Link used all my CPU. Here is the proof
I was able to reach Google and they claim that the Android System should be #1 always. I don't believe them in the least bit but hey it's their OS. As for Samsung Link Samsung claims it shouldn't be using CPU when your not using the application. It should be idle and they had no clue to how to fix it besides saying to do a factory reset. Such incompetent people at Samsung.
Then maybe my phone is broken. I think that it has to do with the bloatware running within the system folder (or running as an Android system app)? I don't know a lot about the development side of things, but I do know that once I froze a majority of the programs that Verizon and Samsung included on the phone, my battery life has never been better... Even though my playing of games doesn't help.

I think mine is somewhat fixed now. The Android OS isn't #1 today. I'll see how everything goes. I don't have anything disabled yet. I'm waiting for a good list of what to disable as for bloatware. I do know if Samsung Link keeps up using my CPU and affecting battery life I may freeze it.
My Battery reading is very different?

Don't know how to get a screen shot on here but I have so little going on with my battery that I'm amazed: Samsung 4G from Verizon, purchased the day they became available. I also purchased my own 64 gb external SD card (Samsung) but only have some data on it at this point ..... waiting for.... hoping for.... the app to sd. The phone is not rooted and uses no special launcher
Screen 60%
Device Idle 6%
Android OS 3%
Android System 3%
Cell Standby 3%
WiFi 2%
I have been near my router most of the day and therefore, the phone has been connected to my router. But I was out for about 4 hours and sent some texts, made a few calls etc.
I went through the apps a few days ago and "disabled" everything I wasn't using - Amazon mp3, Amazon Kindle, Samsung keyboard and Swype ( use the smart keyboard from my droid charge days - maybe someday I'll look around but I'm very attached to it by now). Disabled Watch-On and never registered with Samsung or activated the Samsung Link. I use a third party app and have never used Kies. I also disabled a few Google apps such as the story book and one or two others.
I don't use the automatic brightness adjust. Instead, I have an app with which I can put a fine line on any edge of my screen and move it to brighter or less bright as needed.
Using a very charcoal wallpaper, turned off animations etc. My lock screen actually has a picture from Samsung (the flowers) which I thought wasn't bad. I don't lock it but do use swipe and light... to open it. I have the digital clock widget, the owner information widget, and phone, contacts and ICE info app (as a shortcut) on the lock screen.
I guess I'm sharing this to see if it will help anyone - and also to figure out what I did "right". I don't feel I'm suffering at all from a lack of space for apps, assuming someday we'll move them to the SD card. I sync gmail and use AquaMail for my other 4 email accounts. Aqua Mail is set to sync when I open it, which I usually do about 2 or 3 times/day.
This is all I can think of right now but if I can help anyone with a specific question about one of the apps, please ask.

Crashing....

Had the phone for 2 days, and it has crashed at least twice so far... (device reboots randomly)
Has anyone else experienced crashing on their device yet?

Obviously not supposed to happen. Updated to latest rom ? Rouge third party apps installed ? If not, send a report to Huawei using their "Hicare" app and it should be sorted with rom updates.
Hope you didn't restore an old backup on ur new phone.
I did not restore any backups on it. I am thinking it is the SD card.... how likely is that?
Formatted the SD card, and still crashed. I'm on my 4th crash so far. Phone is unusable to me until this is fixed.
Is there any app that will display crash reports? I want to pinpoint why this is happening.
I would appreciate any feedback on this matter rather than being ignored
my phone crashed again
I have formatted my SD card, wiped my phone, and changed launchers. Phone still crashes.
What do I do?
Has anyone else experienced a crash at all with this phone?
I need your guys’ help.
Nothing seems to be a direct cause of the crashing. The only thing that I’ve noticed is when I go to unlock the phone that’s when the crashing will happen but I’m never able to re-create the crash when I want it’s always sporadic and an indefinite amount of time can go by between the next crash.
UPDATE: Looks like I’m not the only one who is experiencing crashing with their device. The crashing is random and maybe your phone will crash overnight and you don’t know that it was power cycled. I advise everyone to keep an eye on their device to see if it power cycled without you knowing or more obviously when you’re using it in front of your face and you see the wall a logo pop up out of nowhere this device seems to be glitched and needs to be patched as soon as possible again I welcome anyone to share their feedback or stories with this phone crashing is been pretty quiet.

No crash here, I have been using the Mate 10 heavily, tried everything not one crash yet. But dang this thing has a lot of features when you want to turn off one features it is really hard to know where to look for it. Just need to learn and know where to find the settings.
Someone here too has that problem: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-10/how-to/crash-t3700732

Try factory reseting it, sometimes most of those crashes happens when you try to download Apk to get apps for free, so install them 1 by one to see which app is causing it. But definitely factory reset first and try replicating it after a reset.

I have already stated that I did that, and formatted my SD card on-top of that.
Crashes still happen. The same APPS I had on my Mate 8, I have on my Mate 10.
Mate 8 never crashed.
No, have not had any random reboots. To be fair I have had some apps hang for quite a while ending up in me rebooting it myself.
But not to the point there the phone is completely hung like windows blue screen.

Maybe you guys didn't think of it but this phone has android oreo so maybe some compatibility with old applications you are using or restoring?

What is your current firmware version
Am on .115 (636) ALP-L29, i never experience eandom reboots,
But i do face hiccups, as i explained in other thread. If i lock my phone during gaming, it sometimes get hard to unlocked. I know it unlocked from the sound, but screen remain black,
If i swipe the home button, fortunately it goes to recent task. And i can close the game. Other apps run normally,
So i guess its the game that doesnt like being suspended.
And yes, i think Oreo play hand here too. Some app act funny or malfunction/crashing. Name it : ES Explorer during space analyze. PS Touch transform function wont work. Etc

Update
I lost count on how many times my phone is crashed. I've never experience an android phone this unstable before. It's quite disappointing and if I could easily return it I would. This is the firmware version that I'm on. The model number is ALP-AL 00.
the last crash I had was earlier this morning. I was talking to my friend on Google hangouts, I then received a call on WhatsApp, I unlocked my phone to try to deny that call on WhatsApp, and was greeted by the ever so familiar while a logo, showing me that had crashed once again.
I don't know how many users on this form have the Chinese model like I do but this crashing is rage inducing and disappointing at the same time I just hope someone can help me or that Huawei can patch it because I did spend a lot of money on this phone I do like Huawei and their devices.

Have you tried using the phone without the external card ?
I have not. Since day one I've had an SD card in the phone. I did try reformatting the SD card. To no avail.
Do you suggest I try to use the phone without an SD card inside?

Yes. Use without the SD card. Install apps on your phone.
Huawei has been releasing many updates for this phone. Already 118 and 119 exist. Hopefully one of the ones after 115 has fixed the issue.
i think u should blame the android oreo not the huawei itself, still the Oreo not stable android version, check in news how many bugs and problems for google self phone the pixel 2 using the Oreo , and many customers file too many complaints against google, each day new bug appear for the pixel 2 phone. i am sure if mate 10 have nougat pre-installed it will be bugs free and stable
Just got the mate 10! Absolute beast in the battery department! However, I too am experiencing some app crashes particularly FB and ig. Anyone noticed that when you drag icons around the homescreen the stuttering is insane!? I'm on .115 hopefully future updates will fix this issue. =(
