Been searching for it for a while and found many that where working but none that worked for more than 15 seconds then crashed, got this one now, and it works great. Been testing it for the last hour, and even using right now as i type this. It is attached to the attachment, download and install the APK. Enjoy guys

This has worked consistently for me since install.
It also seems to not need any sort of special install procedure, you can just drop the apk and install from astro or whatever file manager you use.

Wifi tether
You actually don't need a file manager to install just download it from your slide and it will ask if you want to install after it is done loading to your memory card.(Of course you need ROOT and su permission) Thanks!

Huh? The wifi tether app creates an access point that any wifi-capable device can connect to. And as [most, if not all] Android handsets have wifi capabilities they should be able to join that access point to snag the wireless connection.

I thought so too until I tried it with my G1.. something about adhoc modem won't allow android to android connection. I'm so jealous I wish I had an evo now.

Yeah I've tried tethering on my own MT3GS and connecting to it via my sister's MT3GS and the network doesn't show up.

Ok, when I try to install while on my phone it says there is a problem parsing the package... ?
NM, it was the wrong APK that had the same name, just ._ at the beginning that I was trying.
By the way, thanks for the app (OP and peeps who made it).
On my MT3GS it is working great! Also running the Teamslide Nonsense ROM, just put the apk on the sdcard and installed.
I'm on OSX and it doesn't actually show up as a network, it shows up as a p2p connection. Not sure if that would make a difference for people that might be having trouble, but basically if you get the app installed and the tether started, it might just be computer settings.

Same thing using CM-RC1 (8/15/2010). Dang, was hopeful this would be a quick fix.
You can always find the most recent version of Android Wifi Tether at: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether. The most current version is 2.0.5-pre8 as of this post. Use that, not the one in this thread's original post!

Useing pre-8 and toolbox and su from Eugene's myfroyo5 ... no luck... still causes reboots.

Not sure if its compatibility with Froyo since (technically speaking) Froyo is suppose to have built-in Hotspot support.

Both Eugene and #teamslide's rom advertised it as working with cm nightlies...
I tried replacing the su and toolbox files in the zip... fresh install still no love.

Has anyone else noticed the wifi tether breaking on eugenes rc6 and teamslide1.71 after flashing the dopio kernel? Cyanogen rc1 seems to reboot on all. It seems like all ROMs that have modified kernel's have caused wifi tether to not work. I am running CR's Full OTA with wifi tether working. After flashing any dopio kernel the thether no longer works (I have tried 2_0_5 pre3, 7 and 8).
I just updated my girlfriend's 3G Slide to the latest CM build (6.0.0) and Wifi Tether is causing reboots for her as well. My Google-fu is wearing thin.
I tried the built in USB tethering as well and regardless of the driver I use once USB tethering is turned on it can't find the driver.
Not sure if it's connected.
Same driver issue is happening with PDANet, on 2 laptops. One running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, the other running Vista Home Premium 32 bit.
This big issue is with WifiTether rebooting the phone. Hopefully someone can come up with a fix for it.
(I've also tried every version of WifiTether as well, happens with each version no matter what.)
This is driving me nuts... I've changed up ROM's, updated/changed the radio and I still cannot get any devices to even see the WiFi, let alone connect...

The integrated won't work, there is no Cyanogen Mod specific to the Eris. Download a Market app, Wireless Tether and Barnacle work well.
Oh, woops, I thought you were using a Froyo ROM, probably wouldn't hurt to a Market app anyway.

Tried barnacle, same results.
This is nuts, it doesn't seem to be broadcasting. I have two (2) Eris' and neither will work.
The lady and I both have Inc's and they work fine.
Hmph. First, are you able to use the Eris' WIFI to connect to wireless networks? Maybe look for an older release of Wireless Tether for Root (I know there are some available, like 1.8.x maybe) and see if that does it?
I have used that version of Wireless Tether with Froyo ROMs. Maybe even though that app doesn't use Froyo's built-in wireless tether, that version requires Froyo? I remember when xtr.Zach included v1.4 of the WIRED Tether for Root app and it didn't work and had to be downgraded to 1.2. I've since used 1.4 on Froyo ROMs with no problem, although I now use CM6.x's implementation of Froyo-native USB tethering, which has worked best of any tethering I've ever used. I wish they would get the Froyo-native wireless tethering working on the Eris.
FYI, I also recently speculated that JIT on may have affected my tethering in the past. My current ROM came with JIT off and that's when I noticed much better luck with tethering.

I have a Motorola Xoom and it does not support ad-hoc networks so I was wondering if there are any roms for the eris that would work with bluetooth tethering as GSB 2.8 does not work and it just reboots my phone when I attempt it. So if anyone knows an eris rom that would tether through bluetooth that would be great. Also I dont want to root my Xoom as its still new and has the latest android software.

well where is your tethering failing, because I'm running GSB 2.8 as well but I have no problem bluetooth tethering, I'm no beast with this ****, but what is your overclock set to? idk if your just getting a freeze and reboot that could be it

Not sure if this is resolved, sorry for the duplicate post if it is. I was working on this same issue and came across this older thread. I am using my Eris with gsb3.6 and pdanet tablet. This worked fine for me.

At this point im lost and searching for answers in hope that i will be able to tether being as that is the main reason i rooted in the first place. As of now im back to stock and ready to do anything to get it to work.
I am extremely grateful for any help

This seems to be a problem with the both CM7 and MIUI at the moment. Barnacle works, but only provides ad hoc networking. That's fine if you want to tether a PC or laptop, but won't work for tethering an android tablet. At the moment, there is no off the shelf solution for tether tablets, though there is a method that involves rooting and altering the tablet so that it can work on ad hoc networks.
I've been able to tether using 3rd party wireless tether on both miui and cm7 with no problems
Im on latest MIUI and im using wireless tether 2.0.5-pre13 and it works flawlessly for me.

Same problem on Motorola Defy - MIUI
I have the same problem on Moto Defy with MIUI.
The "Wireless Tether for Root Users" was perfectly able to tether in infrastucture mode on Moto Defy with Eclair and Froyo.
In MIUI the same software id doesn't! It's just able to tether in ad-hoc mode.
Quite a big limitation.
Is there a solution to the AP tethering issue with MIUI. Did anyone get it to work?

It's been amazing so far, much better than the stock sense ROM. The only problem I am facing is that I am unable to get the wireless hotspot to work correctly. I previously had Harmonia ROM installed and the WiFi tether app that came with it worked just fine. Now on the CyanogenMod ROM I am using the built in hotspot without much luck. All client devices I have tried have been able to connect to the hotspot but are unable to receive any Internet access. My Windows PCs mark the connection as having 'limited access'. I have tested the hotspot with both the 3G and 4G on my phone without any luck.
I'm not sure what to try next, I would really like to have the wireless hotspot working again. Does anyone have any ideas that I could try? Thanks!

AOSP and Sense 4/4+ Roms do NOT support WiFi tether.

Thanks for the reply! I look forward to when I can use the built in tether but until then I actually got it to work using the PdaNet+ app from the market!
