would probably need a custom kernel to underclock it further
but why would you?

I want to underclock it to save battery power when the screen is off

UHM.... You are wasting your time. You do know that the phone underclocks it's self when not in use right?

I was trying to underclock it even more. I thought it only goes down to 400. I was going to try to get it down to 200.

How is it possible to overclock to 768?

I am using this kernel which enables you to clock to 768 Mhz and my friend said this is impossible as the heros max is 528 Mhz, i am trying to tell him that this kernel allows you to clock to 768 Mhz but he still insists that the limit is 528 Mhz so how exactly can you clock to 786 Mhz?
same as with pc. the processor guarantees 528, depending on whether you got one of the "good" batch or the "not so good batch" you can turn that clock up.
i got the **** batch <-- IFAIL

how do you even go about overclocking? my phone is rooted but I do not have the slightest idea how to do that

you need to run a rom with an adapted kernal that allows overclocking to take place, currently this can only be done on some android 1.5 based roms. Check the title it usually advertises as overclock enabled.

Aha,... like the Kimera one yeah? I had read up on that ROM but I thought I could also overclock the ROM I'm using currently. I'll have to have a play then.
Thanx Lenny.

yeah like Kimera.
You could do it on your rom your currently on but you would first have to take it apart, modify the kernal then rebuild it, so unless you really know what your doing its probably best just to switch to a new rom.

I see,... Excellent,... This is getting interesting now.
One more thing then if you don't mind....
I have previously been told how to add and remove .apk's from a ROM using it as a base. Is it anything like this?... Take the kernal out of my base ROM, swap it with the one from the Kimera ROM, maybe modify .xml files to tell it new filenames etc, then re-sign? Or is there alot more to it than that?
This is definitely something I'd like to be able to do sometime. Its not something thats needed right now though as I'm quite happy to quietly sit waiting for 2.1.
Thanks again Lenny.

Asking <> Trying!
The only way you can tell how far you can overclock the particular processor in your phone is to actually overclock incrementally, and see how far you can go before the phone becomes unstable.
Whilst Kendons response was terse, he was quite right in what he said, and you should really apologise!
Regards,
Dave
Kendongs always been a great help,i dont really notice the sarcasm as its exactly what i would have said! You really do have to just try things out but be careful.Anything with new radio or including a radio can be potentially lethal to your Hero

Yeah your right, asking isn't really trying. I could have read up more and found out for myself. But I don't agree that I owe him an apology. For a fact he knew that he would be no help to me whatsoever and would likely just tick me off. He definitely was not trying to help. I'm still adamant it would've been more appropriate for him to say nothing at all.
... And thanx for the input Dave & Bonesy. I'll keep what you said in mind, definitely dont want it burning out.
Thank you.
For anyone following this,.....
There is an overclocking kernal available in the development section that can be applied as an update.zip through the recovery console, onto any 1.5 ROM,...

And yes it does consume more power when the phone is awake, but you underclock for when the screen is turned off to compensate.

SetCPU question...

Just downloaded this app and have to say its amazing. If anyone can help me setup a battery efficient and performance profile it would be.greatly appreciated . No clue how to work this app yet.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I used to set the profiles to drop the cpu to low levels while it's sleeping, but the three times I've tried with SetCPU v.2.0.3 it crashes on me, or more accurately it never wakes up from sleep, I have to hard reset.
Yeah started doing that exact same thing to me. Uninstalled and refunded... Not playing the freezing games.. Unless im underclocking too much any ideas?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
You are probably underclocking too much. I tested with some various settings for the Screen Off and the only underclock that seems stable for the Screen Off (a.k.a. sleep) profile is 800MHz. Anything lower, and it will do this.

Don't set the minimum speed below 200MHz. The phone's stock minimum speed is 200, so anything below that can cause problems (wake up and freezing mostly). I've got my minimum at 400MHz and it's running smoothly.

Did you change the scaling from "conservative"?
i had all tons of issues when i changed the scaling, it would freeze every 30-60mins, I read on here, that it will cause a lot of issues, and should be left on "conservative". I tried that, i am running JAC's OC/UV kernel-no voodoo-no colorfix. OC'd to 1.2ghz, and have been solid for 4 days.
Works! Thx.

Set CPU app

I have a rooted photon with no custom rom just rooted would this app help me to save battery can anybody testify?
Sent from the best MoPho
If you underclock the phone it will save battery life. And you should be able to do that, however, I know you have to be unlocked with the custom kernal to overclock, so the same may apply to underclocking but if not. You can save some battery life with "ROM Toolbox" setting the CPU to Powersave and lowering the Max CPU. I do it generally when I'm sleeping. My two cents.
As long as a kernel doesn't have a perf lock I'm sure it can be underclocked. With SetCPU you can set profiles, so I could see the chance of saving battery if you were to set a screen off profile to run at the lowest mhz your phone will tolerate. I've done this on both my Hero and Evo when I had them and it worked wonders. I have yet to try with my Photon as I just got it yesterday and want to see how stock performs so I have something to compare to. I say try it out and give us some results! lol..
Good idea and trying out now
.....will be back.

I will have to mess with the profiles.

Tried this stock kernel rooted, and the under clock didn't seam to take effect when you go into the advanced options it still showed the CPU going up to 1GHz.
Sent from my MB855 using Tapatalk
I don't think the stock kernal supports cpu modding. I could be wrong though.
Sent from my Photon via XDA
Underclocking does not work with the stock kernel. You'll need to unlock your bootloader and flash a custom kernels to both over/underclock.
Yep after one day of testing my battery was dying quicker! Uninstalled I might unlock it but losing 4G to me is not worth it right now.
Sent from the best MoPho
Yeah. If you use 4G often I wouldn't. But supposedly there is a work around.

In the Dev section, I believe there was a thread with some stock tweaks, where you didn't have to flash a rom or unlock or any of that jazz. You might try looking there. I know some of that stuff was kinda cool.

theres a app in the market called system panel lite it shows you the process of both cores and the photon does underclock while idle on its own the app also shows the cpu usage in real time my stock kernal went to around 246 mhz with that app running and just fyi the other core is only used ondemand..
It appears to be working just fine on mine. I'm also using the 198 leak and rooted.

We can't overclock unless we get a custom kernel so that app won't do you much good. I think you can still underclock if you really want to though.

With the CPU settings, i'm assuming the 0-1000 isn't 1000%, is that just so if you wanted you could set your CPU to 55.7 if you were inclined?

1000 refers to mhz converted from 1.0ghz referring to processor speed...so you can play with the processor from 0 mhz to 1000mhz. Although you arent getting exact numbers because of the conversion rate and the processor capacity its pretty close.

Problems in my Galaxy S3 after overclocking.

Hello everyone, i have a problem in my Galaxy S3 GT i9300, (US Version)
After i overclock it to 1400 max 200 min. my Galaxy S3 is hot, but not too much, is this normal?
Any links for the right overclocking in my smartphone? thanks!!!
and my battery drains fast!! what should i do, i need help (((
Im using Galaxy S3 Us Version, iGT19300 Rooted, CyanogenMod10 Nightly build
I don't think the battery has anything to do with your clock speed. It's more related to apps you installed. Try identify which apps causing this first with betterbatterystatistic apps

TBH if you don't know what your doing you really shouldn't be experimenting with overclocks or undervolting, if your lucky and screw up you may have a non booting device if your unlucky you could destroy your cpu (I know it's very unlikely). Please read up on this before attempting, imho stock speeds and voltage should suit most users.
