[Q] For those going back to 1.6 from 2.1, why? - Streak 5 Android Development

Mostly I am trying to see if this is an isolated issue with mine that might be fixed by rolling the dice again and re-flashing 2.1, but I'm sure people have interesting anecdotes to share as well.
For me, the ROM gave me severe overheating issues. Like, I would be in a heavily air conditioned room playing a video file, and after 20 minutes even though the outside doesn't feel exceptionally warm, running the internal temp monitor would show 98-100 degrees! This heated area was highly localized in the lower left corner, where according to ifixit the processor rests. Without air conditioning, even simply browsing the internet would cause it to eventually overheat.
To add to that, comparing 1.6 to 2.1 charging speed and general battery life seems to be much better after going back to 1.6. Whereas in 2.1 watching a 20-minute video could cut down my battery by 30 percent even in airplane mode, in 1.6 I lose maybe 5 percent in the same situation.
Of course even in 1.6 I am still having troubles with heat when I am in a hot environment, though I don't know if this is just the nature of running a modern smartphone in 29 degree C (84 F) weather. As an aside, has anybody had overheating issues in hot environments?

Several reasons include:
1 - Utterly crap, slow, useless & innaccurate keyboard
2 - Less icons fit on screen
3 - Only 5 home screen in which you cannot remove/add
4 - Wallpaper does not work properly, instead of filling one screen
it distorts and stretches onto all the other screens...
That's all I can think of now...

100*F after 20 minutes of video playback? That's absolutely normal. In fact it's kinda cool.

I'm back on 1.6 because:
No WMA support in stock or aftermarket players (RockPlayer did work, but that's no good for music)
I prefer the 1.6 keyboard
I like Dell's FB, Twitter and RSS widgets
I want my restricted market apps to be available
I do miss (from 2.1)
The eye-candy
Being able to charge in aeroplane mode (what is UP with that anyway?)
The dialer/contact app is great
Did I mention the eye-candy?
2.1 was very pretty and I am very much looking forward to it in an official ROM. IMHO though, it doesn't provide the functionality I need.

Seriously? I mean, what's the point in having a media tablet if it can't even finish a TV episode without an emergency shutdown? Is this normal for android smartphones in general, or is the streak just badly designed?

my guess is that the cpu throttling isnt fully implemented or that it doesnt support hardware decoding.
either way, i feel the 2.1 is pretty buggy, the facebook sync goes funny, the dell rss widget crashes every few hours, and a few more that i cant recall off the top of my head.
waiting eagerly for 2.2 to release.

I have to agree with the other posters...
- New icon spacing is terrible (what a waste of a big screen)
- Old keyboard was better
- Old recent programs menu was better
- Old camera UI was better
- Old desktop (with seperate rooms/wallpapers) was better
If the final OTA update is this bad I'm going to be sticking with 1.6 - and I'll be happy with it.
Updates are supposed to make things better, not worse.

Ok all of that is fixed by third party solutions. ADWlauncher rocks

Did anybody ever have trouble with videos in 2.1? I fixed my overheating issue, got it so that I could watch videos as much as I wanted in 1.6. So I went back to 2.1 thinking my biggest gripe was solved, but now, even at 30 degrees C (86 F), the thing restarts maybe ten minutes into a video.

Not sure whats behind this overheating, but i am running 2.1 since it was leaked without any issues, to be fair I have only watched about 30 mins of District 9 but ran fine.
I was really glad to see the back of 1.6, so many awesome apps were unavailable. As the other post mentioned most of the failures of the current 2.1 can be remedied with other istalls. ADW lets you set the ammount of columns and rows of icons, and up to 7 home pages, plus loads of other tweaks, themes and portrait mode.
I was super dissapointed with the new keyboard too, but the HTC multitouch keyboard is awesome and super fast with really good correction too, only thing that doesnt work yet is auto capitolisation as far as I know, and theres various skins to chose from.
For me there was also a noticable speed increase, this with proper multitouch meets my gaming needs with psx4droid. The dialer and contacts is a huge improvement, as is the stock gallery. Only thing with that is the proximity hangs sometimes and takes a while for the sceen to light up but thats pretty rare and I think that could be some app interfering...
I for one cant wait for the official 2.1 hopefully sligly ironed out release, this will nicely hold me over till froyo, which better be soon Dell!! Though I understand some people cant be bothered to tweak and play with it, just want it working out of the box. I guess coming from WM im used to that LOL..

Positives about the SGS2 ?

Wifi weak
GPS issues
Display yellow tint
wake up lag
overheating playing 3D games
sound quality issues
battery life problems
Anyone wanting to find out if this phone is worth buying would turn away very fast.
When I owned my SGS2, my wifi was fine, GPS was spot on and fast, never noticed a yellow tint, cant work out where the wake up lag was, ok it overheated playing pocket legends but nothing else, sound was pretty good, battery life seemed to improve over time.
Anymore positive comments or links to threads, that might make a new comer welcome.

Wifi - Yes its weaker compared to the Iphone4 or any of the Netbooks I have at home, In a spot here the netbook can still hold and maintain the signal the SGS2 doesnt even see the router to be in range anymore.
GPS issues - I dont use the GPS that much so its a non-issue for me.
Display yellow tint - Biggest downside of this product, its supposed to feature a great screen (not perfect but great) lots of other quality control related issues on the screen.
wake up lag - I think all andriod phones have this wake up lag, but someone correct me on this. The S1 also had this after the 2.2 update.
overheating playing 3D games - I've been with 3 units and my first 2 phones barely heated up when playing games, this 3rd phone runs significantly warmer.
sound quality issues - S2 uses a lower end sound chip so this must be the main culprit.
battery life problems - totally subjective to the usage and expectations, Im getting great battery life my self, nothing extra ordinary.
Dont forget about the pink spot on the camera and video stutter/frame drop issues too
Nothing subjective about weak battery - it's WEAK....
Only + point i can think about is a decent camera. But on mine it broke 2 weeks after purchase.
Korean trash.

My experience:
Wifi weak = Good enough for my use
GPS issues = nope
Display yellow tint = nope
wake up lag = You got to be kidding me
overheating playing 3D games = True it gets pretty warm
sound quality issues = Good enough for my use
battery life problems = Battery life is good
I have 4 friends with the same phone, and they are not experiencing these issues.
Positives:
- It is fast. It laughs at your iPhone 4 and Sensation.
- It has a big beautiful screen but it is still thin and lightweight
- Enough RAM (1 GB)
- Touchwiz 4 is super smooth and it is in my opinion better than Sense
- Very smooth web browser
- Good camera
Overall:
Best phone on the market at the moment.
Well for me it is mainly the Web Browser (Stock only), I don't even turn my PC on for normal browsing anymore. Full Flash support is awesome. Hardware acceleration is great too.
Besides, Video Playback capacity is great too, it can even play 1080P MKV's, and that with subtitles, nice. We shouldn't forget the awesome 4.27" S-AMOLED Plus screen.
Having a Noise Cancellation Mic is very nice too, especially when you are in noisy areas.
What else? Can't remember atm, will edit post if I do remember.
Regards.

The yellow tint was just a manufacturing problem, and if you bought a device now (new) it wouldn't have it.

Ok if its not subjective to usage then anyone who cant reach 6days of battery life has a defective phone since I can get 6days with well over 40% of battery left. This is ofcourse taken from what you said.
See how others would comment about the battery life or screen, they have different feedbacks according to what their usage is.
Ex.
Someone who just uses the phone for call/sms will have insanely awesome battery life but someone who has wifi/bt/gps/HSPDA enabled 24/7 might with regular push and updates and uses this phone as an alternative to a netbook will only get between 6-10hrs of battery life.
Same goes for the people who dont see the yellow tint as an issue because they bought the phone not for its screen but for its phone features or just plainly accept the defects thus causing a low quality product.
Everything is almost subjective to the user.

Not being anal here but Id like for you to prove that with pictures that the new batches dont have yellow tinting, so that those who bought the initial batches that came out can send it so the service center and have it replaced.

Thats the problem, a lot of us assume that the 6 million figure released by sites is 100% accurate and even if it is we dont really know how much the return rates are but if they are indeed pretty low how come a few folks ( regardless of how few this ppl are ) have exchanged the phone more than twice..
Also a lot of people have been getting misinformation from forums claiming these issues to be "normal", with enough returns samsung will surely rectify some of it.
Think about it if samsung will silently introduce a new revised hardware with a significantly higher screen quality control ( including the total elimination of the yellow tinting, darker spots, white blotches and vertical banding ) and a fixed camera w/o frame drops and pink spots, a better GPS antenna configuration.. for sure those who claimed that they dont see the issue suddenly will see the issue if they know about revised hardware. Just saying but its gonna be a fact when this happens, not asking for perfection just asking for better quality =)
Then again the issues we see (aside from quality and manufacturing issues) are pretty much subjective to the user experience.
The positive thing about this phone is that its blazing fast! No other phone can compare but it also has a lot of issues and down sides especially the AOS bug when you have wifi and IM apps running, compared it to a 2.1 / 2.2 or 2.3.5 nexus reference device the N1 and NS outlasts the battery on this phone, heck even the iphone4 outlasts it when the AOS bug kicks in.

+1.
Battery life is proportional to use. Wi-Fi+sync = battery drain. Have been using Juice Defender Ultimate for a few days and it help to solve this as it turns Wi-Fi and sync on only then the screen is on and when it is scheduled to do so (for 15 seconds every 15 minutes in my case) in order to receive e-mails, updates, etc.
About the rest, well, no issues at all! Just perfect.

Now I'm about to post the negatives and positives about this phone. I love this phone despite its negatives though. I just hate how Android isn't really optimized atm (little to no hardware acceleration and no proper multi-core utilization). I bought mine 3 weeks back.
TL;DR
The yellow tint is there (in addition to vertical lines), wi-fi is weak, wake up lag is there sometimes (about 1 sec), it gets warm (I hope this has no effect on the screen, I'd hate it if the heat ruins the screen), battery life seems to get better overtime.
These points might sound weird because I copy pasted the review I wrote to my friends.
Negatives:
1. Browser would sometimes get stuck on white blank page when switching windows (not apps, windows as in tabs), especially heavier webpages. One workaround is to switch orientations (portrait to landscape, then back to portrait).
2. This is true to all Android browsers. You will have problems with websites with scrollable frames. And pop-ups.
3. This is also true to all Android phones. Multitouch and copy paste implementations are not consistent throughout the phone. In Browser, you will find that the copy paste works wonderfully well. In some apps, copy paste isn't even implemented. This is the only area in which I think the S2 loses to iPhone.
4. Eventhough it's light, build quality does not win that of HTC. I dropped it once (more like threw instead of dropped), it has a little damage, nothing visible unless you shine direct light to it, mainly because it's black.
5. The charger you get out of the box is merely 700mAH instead of 1000mAH like those bundled by HTC. It takes roughly 3 hours to charge from 0 to 100% (if you use it while charging it can take you a whole lot longer). This brings us to next point.
6. The phone gets warm, warmer than what would feel comfortable when you use it extensively, especially when charging. This is probably why the charger supplied is less powerful, to avoid overheating. This is one reason I don't have casing.
7. The phone automatically turns down your brightness to 0% when your battery reaches 10%. This apparently has no workaround, unless you flash another ROM.
8. I've heard people saying that, eventhough this comes with Gorilla Glass, the Oleophobic coating makes it prone to scratches. I personally run around without a screen protector, and still no scratches after 2 weeks.
9. The wi-fi chip might be the low-power one. I'm getting the same amount of bars as my HTC Wildfire.
10. I'm not sure if the physical keys will play well with Ice Cream Sandwich. I heard ICS will be more like Honeycomb, meaning the main buttons are placed on-screen.
Positives:
1. 4.3" of Super Amoled Plus goodness. I can never look at my desktop and laptop monitors the same way anymore. Anything with black background looks absolutely stunning.
2. It's so powerful that I experience almost zero lag. Lags can still be felt though when you're running unoptimized apps. Whatsapp is one app in which you can feel the stutters.
3. Browsing is ultra smooth, there simply is no lag, even when browsing image-heavy sites. This is mainly because Hardware Acceleration is enabled in the Browser. And I think Samsung adopted iOS' method, you will see checkerboards sometimes.
4. Again, performance. I run Live wallpaper, listen to music, read manga, altogether without experiencing a single stutter, and I hardly ever use the Task Manager.
5. Apps are getting better. Almost all respectable companies are releasing iOS version of the app together with Android version. I downloaded a few addictive games and they're on par with the iOS version.
6. The Oleophobic coating feels really good on the fingers. Touchscreen also seems to register even the slightest of touch.
7. It is very very light, iPhone4 felt like a brick when holding them together.
8. It comes pre-installed with multiple codecs. I've loaded my phone with a few movies and they all play without a problem. 720p movies are played without any lag.
9. The hardware is pretty much future-proof. I believe it can run anything thrown at it for the next 2 years.
10. Touchwiz 4.0 is pretty good, I can't believe I actually like it.

I can't see any yellow tint or any other issue with my display. I'm currently on XXKG3 stock ROM, but I have used KE1 and KE7 stock before and I haven't noticed any issue either.
[EDIT] Before I used to use stock KE1 and KE7 Kernels (2.3.3). Now I use CF-Root 4.1 XXKG3 (2.3.4) and I have to say that it rocks. (Deserved donations to CF made!)

The screen temperature varies from device to device. Some have had a yellow tint but it doesn't appear to be the majority. There's a production/design issue that shows as a darkening on the left 1/4 of the display. The majority can't see it unless they take pics of their phones in dark rooms at 10% brightness. Screens with a yellow bias seem to exaggerate it.

And what phone's better? If you look at the Sensation, O2X/G2X, and Atrix forums there's a list of comparable issues. Many people that have issues have an expectation of perfection that's not realistic for a mass-produced electronic device. If you're one of them, and are seeking perfection, don't buy a dual-core phone. The vast majority on this forum are thrilled with their purchase and would recommend the phone to a friend.

Yeah, I agree. The Samsung browser definitely could offer easily a decent desktop view. Messing with user agent doesn't provide a long term fix. For this reason, I have Opera mobile on my phone, which is great for that purpose. Nevertheless, I only use Opera when I want a desktop view, 98% of the time I stick with the Samsung browser, which for mobile view is good in my opinion.

[Q] funny issues with a day old dell streak 5 :(

Hi,
so I got a dell streak yesterday and I love alot of things about it, but there are some things that are just really getting on my nerves...it is with rogers wireless and on a three year contract...so as soon as I got it, I did the over the air update push from android 1.6 to 2.2.1 and its alot faster abv and all that...but Ive noticed some odd things here they are:
1. Touchscreen seems over sensitive and almost jittery and sometimes it clicks the wrong thing, and yes I did calibrate the touchscreen several times through the bootloader...im a little more used to it now, but its still unacceptable..
2. The most annoying issue is around 50% of the time when I turn the device on it will not recognize the MicroSD as being plugged in and so I turn it off and simply reboot without taking ondd the cover or anything...and it works...so how just that make sense eh?
3. Im surprised that the graphics performance seems pretty bad actually...I know this device is running the Adreno 200 Graphics Chip unlike the 205 on some other smartphones..and it run the decent snapdragon processor, its odd I noticed it lagging on fruit ninja even...which is silly since its not even fully 3d
4. I had this issue with playing videos which seems to be gone for now...where if I played a video through any player (youtube, cnn, media players...etc)
it would stop on the first frame and keep playing the audio and if I forced it to fastforward it would get one more frame and the weirdest part was that it was playing with the color all messed up not negative more like the hue was different...it made peoples heads blue and stuff and it seemed to only apply to 60% of the frame...its working normally now...any ideas on these issues?
thx in advance!
Im Running:
Dell Streak 5 with Android 2.2.1 (rooted)

My TF201 Experience (so far)

Apologies ahead of time for the wall of text...
I got my wife the Prime for Christmas. It took her a couple of days to finally open it, as I gave her the choice of going with it or the iPad2. After a couple of days, she seems to like it and is slowly getting the hang of the OS.
I've played with it some. For the most part, it seems smooth. I've managed to make it glitch (lag) a time or two by going in and out of apps and even had the launcher itself FC on me forcing me to reboot.
That was while checking out Alice in Wonderland in MyBooks, which by the way, is not exactly usable. The page animations worked at first, then stopped, then the pages stopped turning altogether and the app FC'd. Not that I care or am surprised. I'm used to included software being half-baked.
Browser experience has been fine using stock and Opera. Dolphin doesn't seem to work as well on the TF201 as it does on my Atrix. Perfect experience? No. I have a $4,500 i7 2920-XM workstation with an SSD and 16gigs of RAM at work and even with it, the browsing experience (or OS experience in general) can lag/glitch from time to time. Nature of the beast.
I can't really comment on battery life. She took it off the charger Monday night at 100%. It hasn't been used steadily for more than 1-2 hours at a time. It's down to about 15% this morning. I can't really say how many hours of use she's gotten out of it but it doesn't seem to drain much overnight, even with Facebook, email and other notifactions. It felt like it was draining pretty quick when in use but I'll have to pay closer attention.
There's minor light bleed around the edges but I had to turn the lights off during boot up to notice. I haven't attempted to watch an entire movie in the dark with it to tell if it's something that will be bothersome. I'll tell you, I went through THREE Sony XBR2 LCDs a few years ago. They suffered from horrible "clouding" (blotchy white areas all over the panel) and light bleed in the corners. That was noticeable under normal use and since I primarily watched movies in pure darkness, it was bothersome. I don't think it's going to be an issue w/ the TF201 unless I'm being nitpicky.
WiFi seems OK. I have yet to compare it to the laptop, but compared to my Atrix (CM7) it's getting the same signal. It fluctuates some, even staying in the same spot, but it's never caused a problem.
I haven't tested GPS. Something tells me it's not going to operate properly though It's low on my list of concerns and I'll use it as an excuse to return the thing to Gamestop in the next 15 days (for exchange only, which is irksome), but otherwise, I'm not too concerned. If it turns out to be hardware, I imagine an RMA will correct it. It would be cool to use the thing for GPS but I own an actual GPS and rarely use it. I would still prefer the device have its features work, of course.
Aside from the launcher FC and subsequent reboot and the occasional glitchiness/lag using the stock launcher and jumping through apps, the only other issue I've noticed happened this AM. I woke up to the room filled with light. The TF201 was on. I didn't wait long to see if it would go back to sleep so maybe it would have. However, when I got up to see what it was doing, I noticed it had rebooted. Hopefully that doesn't happen often and hopefully not while in use!
I'm confident that a lot of these issues can be fixed with firmware updates and hopefully those are pretty quick to release. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the device. Hopefully ICS will only make the experience better. And hopefully it will come soon so all of the speculation, etc can end! I know my Atrix went from all right to pretty frickin' awesome when I put CM7 on it.

ATP Performance?

So the tablet flies at times but a few areas I have seen trouble...
The browser is crap, hopefully the ICS upgrade will fix this. I don't care for Opera or any other browser, but I may have to switch if the ICS browser isn't better.
-Its very choppy when zooming or scrolling
-hitting links with your finger often requires multiple touches
-I haven't tested the WiFi speed but I haven't noticed it being exceedingly fast, probably seems slower than it should. I will test later.
On a good note:
-I opened up the Maps program about 15 minutes after I first turned it on, by the time the map loaded (about 5 seconds) it had me zeroed in at my house within 20 meters. I was inside on my couch. Haven't tried navigation, and likely won't for a while...not a big selling point for me.
It also has a little stutter when transitioning back from Browser to Home and you try to slide the pages...there is a little stutter the first few times.
I have also had a few FCs...
Just so we are all clear I LOVE this thing and won't be returning it. I have hopes that ICS will fix some of these issues. I am a glass half full guy, but posting on the great things it does wouldn't really help since I am looking for people to ease my mind on some of the issues I found.

My Personal Android Nougat Review

So I've had this update for almost more or less than 2 months now, and the speed has improved just a little bit. As we all know, typical samsung software, has some glitches and stutter and all that still occurs, for some reason that I and every users don't know why this still exist. Sometimes I'm watching on Youtube, and the damn video just freezes but you can still hear the audio. But I thought maybe it's just the app so i reset the app by force stopping and clearing the data but the thing still occurs. Camera overtime, has slowed down. I don't know why but this specially occurs on lowlight situations that whenever but not always, i launched my camera, it just lags and stops and gos and it's so annoyingly slow. But most of the time, it is snappy. On the other good side of this story, i like the minimalistic Camera app. It's really just their software. Overall it is indeed snappy, but the consistency is their problem. My storage isn't even full yet, for all we know storages slow down as you're taking it all up. I've scheduled automatic restarts, i think it helped. The fingerprint, ugh i don't even wanna talk about it. I don't know how a oneplus 3 has better fingerprint than samsung's flagship. I mean it's just unreliable, i don't know maybe it's just mine??? I literally had 3 fingers assigned on my one and only right thumb just so that the phone won't have excuses lol. But no, im disappointed. It always has to be two damn tries, thats the least. Bluelight filter is now baked in, which is a very nice feature, atleast for me. Battery, i personally didn't notice any change, but thumbs up to that cos im more than satisfied with it. And as we all know, snapchat camera still sucks not only on this phone but with every android phone. The modes, man are they helpful for those times we really need to save battery. You can customize the resolution of you're desire., well not really but three choices is a lot. 720p,1080p,1440p. Now on the update, I don''t know if you noticed, my resolution is set to 1080p because the mode that is chosen after the update will automatically choose the "optimized" mode which adjusts the resolution and cpu speeds and all that according to the activity you're currenty doing. Which is another good thing. Also, google assistant arrived as well, which great! Interface has some major color and look and design changes. The status bar along with the pull down menu in my opinion has become cleaner and better looking than the previous version. The settings has been better, way way better organized than before. Samsung Pay hasn't yet to come in Canada for some goddamn reason (i know it's not suppose to be here but maybe just maybe someone from samsung reads this ****). I'll leave it here, overall, again, it's faster and snappier, app switches are better almost perfect. But you know, stutters and lags will be there. This is my review for the nougat update on my Sprint Samsung Galaxy S7. Thanks for reading!
