Dells plans for US streak - Streak 5 Android Development

Looks like the plan is to go right to 2.2
"LionelatDell: @Wrestlevania: @dzerveviktory is correct. The current plan in the US is to skip 2.x and go straight to Android 2.2. #dellstreak"

Man, that's going to hurt. That's sure not the time frame I was hoping for. I was thinking a beta this month.

End of this year!!!

-Dell announced that 2.2 would be available at the end of the year weeks before they released it in Europe.
-Dell reps confirmed with me for over 3 months, (up until pre-order release day) that Dell would be releasing the unlocked version when purchasing the Streak outright.
- only through Lionelatdell that I confirmed that it was locked to AT&T, 2 days before pre-release day that full price is still locked to AT&T. Even then, Dell reps still didn't know better until release day.
I wouldn't trust those Dell reps, they're only going by what everyone else knows, not inside information.

Wow that's going to really hurt sales. 2.2 now will make the streak topdog. Dot get me wrong love my streak but it can be so much h better.

Ur right about 2.2making the streak topdog
I'm running 2.1at the mo n it made my streak a much better little fella indeed.
I so can't wait for 2.2 i'm checking every day to see if there is an update or even another beta rom thats been released to the masses.
I can't beleive that its still not release stateside yet but obviously dell have there reasons.

by the end of this year theres already going to be 3.0...
woot..?

Perhaps we should all pitch in and buy the Cyanogen Team a Streak for them to play with, and maybe, just maybe, they'll cook a Froyo Cyanogen main course for us

I'm SURE CM will get ported... as soon as the Kernel source is GPL'd... i'd much rather have a 2.6.32 Kernel version open sourced! you listening Dell? then a CM port would take days at most.

Froyo

Do we have to wait for samsung to actually release the froyo update for this device, or can it be attained earlier?
Someone might be able to port over froyo but you won't get a good Rom until froyo officially comes

I wouldn't count on that. We had completely stable Froyo roms for the Incredible a good 2 months before the official update came out.
I have high hopes that Cyanogen will get CM6 running on the Fascinate. I'm hoping that development won't be too different from the other Galaxy S variants. Time will tell.

Why would you say that? Once the devs have the source code, they should be able to cook up some ROMs that are just as good, or better, then what Samsung releases.

Especially considering that Samsung has made all the goodies open-source. I would suspect it will be a lot easier for someone to cook up a good ROM for this phone than it was for the original Droid.
Verizon made a statement that we would get the Google search widget back with froyo. I guess its the froyo widget obviously. But at least that's a good sign that vzw acknowledges that we will get froyo

But when we get Froyo, will we also get the option to use Google as the default? It's killing me to hit the search button and get binged.

Rom development

Im not really expecting this but can we expect rom development for the streak to a level anywhere near what i experienced with the htc touch hd?

There are some great devs working on porting to froyo. This is going to be a grueling process and is going to take some time.
But rest assured there will be some lots of development for the streak.

Do we need dell to release source for 2.1 before cm can go to work, or can it be done with only the 1.6 that we have?
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
we are already hacking together (or trying to ) a 2.6.32 based kernel (which froyo needs) but its slow work as dells kernel is less useful than a chocolate teapot
Good luck with it mate appreciate your efforts !
One more bit of good news for us streak owners. This is a thank you response from Steve (leader of the cyanogenmodders?) for a donation I made (classy in itself):
"Thanks! And we actually just got 2 people on board who are working on the Streak."
YIPPEE!!!
big thanks from here as well, i usualy donate once things are done, i think were going to get alot more action around here like the samsung galaxy s once the streak is sold at best buy, right now 1 out of 30 people know what the dell streak is so having it sold at best buy will hopfully make the community alot bigger

[Q] HTC Sense on dell streak

Hey I was having a quick look at the desire hd and i was wondering if it would be possible to get the new htc sense with full landscape support on the Streak?
I was going to pick one of these up when they hit Best Buy this month and was thinking the same thing...
This have already been asked so many times!
Yes it is possible but someone have to do it! Most of the developers here are busy with other thing the are more important so it will be a while till someone find the time to do it!
if i knew developers were not interested in d dell streak i wouldnt have bought it, its a pity too, such a beautiful device going unnoticed, wonder where it went wrong..oh well...

Give it chance, it's not exactly been out long
It got rooted within days, which is pretty good going if you ask me, and stock Froyo is nearly done. I'd say development is moving along nicely
Once we have figured out how to get stock android running fine on the Streak, getting Sense running shouldn't be too hard.
I don't think it's got much to do with when it was released, Dell have held back most of the Devs by not releasing the kernal and when they did it wasn't complete, i'd rather have 2.2 than HTC sense if HTC sense was a priority i would of bought a HTC phone.
ur right about buying htc for htc sense lol, but i dono im on vanilla 2.1, n it sux lol, need some sort of skin and htc sense is the best out there come on devs!

I don't understand people that say this kind of stuff. If you want Sense or Froyo on the Streak why don't YOU download the kernel and start working on it. Oh, cause you don't know how? Well then maybe you should just sit and wait like everyone else. We are lucky that anybody is doing any dev work at all, so lets all be patient and stop complaining.
Is there any kind of tutorial on how to work on a kernel because I'm really interested in rom development?

MIUI on DELL STREAK ?

Is a port of MIUI on the Streak possible ? I'm very attracted to this UI and think it would look awesome on our 5 inch screens.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Its a nice theme, I am sure its possible. But looks so iphone like, which really arent to my liking.
The theme tends to develop his own style and to differ from iOS. The UI iso very slick and since Gingerbread seems to be a disappointment ...

Its slick, no doubt, my friend has it on his milestone, it has some cool animation and 60 FPS system animations versus 17 FPS on the stock rom on a Nexus One. That makes it so much smoother. It does has this iPhone aroma about it.
I wouldn't pass judgement on gingerbread so quickly, its no even been release yet
Although I agree about the "looking too much like an iphone" thing, I would love to see this.
We're all extremely greatful for the huge amount of work that steve does on the Streak, but we really need more people developing,
An MIUI or Cyanogen rom would really give the streak the kick up the ass it deserves, this monster phone just seems wasted on the crap Dell are churning out.
Actually Steve is working on CM6 AFAIK. But we need something powerful. Something that is incredibly eye-candy. We could have the best phone if Dell cared.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Both of you are right, we need more dev and more rom choices. Streak 5 inch screen could do so much more. We need more dev to uncover its potential......
Yeah. I mean, if we could have DjSteve, Sense, MIUI and CM6 that would be awesome yet. When I see the number of Roms for the Hero I'm just WOW.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I just looked this rom up - the 10.29 version on the htc desire ,and it looks amazing. I think if one of you fantastic people could port it to our streaks it would make a great device with a crap ui ,into a great all round device.

miui is not jsut a theme, its a fully edited build of android, hence getting it to work on the streak is more of a hassle than you would think, will be something im gonan look at beforelong tho as ive put cm on hold for now pending audio libs sources being released by dell
I've read the MIUI benchmarks higher than cm anyway.
Hey steve, great news about the possibility of more rom options, not that we're dissing your current work though, the streak would be a sad state of affairs without your work so far & I hope you continue!
*Took me ages to find where this thread had gone, probably should be moved out of dev & in to general*

SAMSUNG Y U NO GIVE US ICS KERNEL SOURCE???

Is it going to take a year or will we be blessed with ICS shortly after its release?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
If it's anything like the Captivate, we'll get the update via Carrier after a long delay, but custom ROMs will have it not long after it appears for the international SGS2.
Go figure....lol
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
why ask when you know the answer - lol
Being that ICS hasn't even been released yet, means the manufacturers dont have the code to make it work on the phone. Which means we are probably 8-12 months away from seeing a "leaked" ICS.
Who knows. If the phone hardware is similar, we might get an early release of ICS based on the Nexus Prime version.
LOL your right but who knows ICS is designed for dual core hardware so we might get lucky lets just see.........

Looks like ICS is a 3 button lay out from what the video shows on the Galaxy Nexus.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
(dates are approximate, based solely on my fuzzy memory)
If the history of the Captivate can be a guide:
AOSP Froyo was released in about July(?) of last year, I9000 Froyo and leaked versions of Froyo for Captivate started appearing around October, official AT&T UCKB1 Froyo dropped in late February. So, about 8 months for official Froyo.
AOSP GB was released in about Feb., Samsung I9000 custom ROMs appeared around May, and official AT&T Captivate GB still has not been released nor has any definite timeline even been announced. 2011 was all that was given in a press release a few months back, but 8 months would put it around Dec/Jan.
But the I777 AT&T SGS II deviates less from the international SGSII though, which *might* make it easier/simpler for Samsung and AT&T to shorten the development cycle. Captivate had stuff like the Audience chip that the international I9000 didn't, and omittted stuff like the front-facing camera, flash, and FM radio. SGSII also has less bloat that needs to be updated.
We'll just have to see how much faster the development cycle is, if it's improved at all.
