Please explain newbee!!! - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What is ClockworkMod Recovery and what is Stock Recovery?
Please explain in simple terms, benefits, possible uses?
What is Nandroid? Is Nandroid same as ClockworkMod Recovery? or Stock Recovery?
thank you

Stock recovery is just that, stock comes loaded on the phone. Allows you to wipe the phone and flash official updates.
ClockworkMod Recovery is a custom recovery that allows you to do more. First you need to root your phone then you can flash it. With Clockwork you can flash custom roms and do nandroid back ups. Nandroid backups basically back up you phone, so if you have to wipe your phone or flash something unstable you can revert back to a stable point on your phone.

That helps...would you please explain below? This is in reference to ROM manager application from Market I downloaded.
I have question though on restoring to "stock".
Let's suppose I have screwed up and can't start my phone for whatever reason, so that I won't have access to "ROM Manager" application, correct? In that case, how do I "Reboot into Recovery"? I am confused here...
When I reboot using POWER KEY and VOLUME UP key, options I see are very limited and I don't see Nandroid there, so how exactly would I able to restore from my Nandroid images?
Basically if I am hard down, can't even get to home screen, how can I restore my phone from mybackups? I think I am having small gap in my understand!
thank you so much!

When you install clockwordmod recovery, it installs a file on your internal SD vs the External SD card. When you enter stock recovery, you would choose "reinstall packages" and that would bring you back into clockworkmod recovery so you can install custom roms, perform a nandroid backup, etc...

rom manager is made by koush, who also makes clock work recovery.
in rom manager "flash clockworkmod recovery"
Now check your SD card (internal) do you have an "update.zip" file? Is so it probably the zip you used to root the phone, delete it and look inside the clockwork folder. you'll see "recover-update.zip" copy this to the root of your SD card and rename it update.zip.
turn phone off and turn it back on going into recovery... vol up+down and power.
Select 'reinstall package" press power to confirm.
now you are in clockwork recovery and can nadroid restore/backup, install roms etc...
You can do all ^^^ from rom manager also but if you can't get the phone to boot this can a restore or rom flash...
if you truly bugger up your phone you will need to odin a rom. Nandroid will not re flash kernel or radio ODIN will

This is trully great reply! It clarifies so much!
2 questions pls.
1) can I make Odin images of my current ROM by myself? and store away on flash drive for future rescue?
2) my Vibrant looks into internal-storage Not microSD card when I try to boot into clockwork recovery. Can I make it to look into microSD card? Do I make some directory or what? how please?
it says like this
--Install from sdcard....
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(No such file or directory)
Installation aborted.
I have tried twice by putting update.zip into root of sd card AND /sdcard/update.zip subfolder. but no luck!
thank you

1. Why would you do that? Just do Nandroid backups, its the same thing of what you're asking but so much simpler.
2. Clockwork is built to look at internal, it's good. Just drop the things you flash into the root of your internal. Internal is built in 12GB. It will always be the internal.
Are you sure its "update.zip" and not update.zip.zip?

One can made an odin image but why? just make nandroids. easier and all you really need.
sorry to calarrify... both internal memory and removeable SD card are listed as SD cards.
update.zip needs to be in root of internal memory.

1) I just asked because SykesAT said above that Nandroid will not re flash kernel or radio ODIN will. In short is it very hard to make Odin image?
2) I was after booting into Clockwork recovery from SDCARD because,
A) what if I don't have update.zip on internal memory when I crash my phone? and it's too late. There wouldn't be any way for me to put update.zip, will I? wouldn't it be too late?
B) what if I don't have "whatever things" I want to flash on my internal memory? I'd like to keep my stock ROM or whatever on home PC, not carrying around all the time. You see what I am saying? How exactly will I be able to load it on internal memory from PC if I cannot even get to home screen?
I tried clockwork recovery from internal memory and it works perfect. It's just I was after microSD card for reasons above.

and SkyesAT just said: One can made an odin image but why? just make nandroids. easier and all you really need.
1. You shouldn't be flashing a seperate radio anyway. Unless you're in Europe but you shouldn't be on the Vibrant forum in that case anyway, at least not applying hacks/tweaks/etc from this forum (some will work some will cause problems).
Kernels.. you shouldn't be flashing them ANYWAY since you said that you're a "newbee." Kernels aren't something that you should be messing with until you're more comfortable because it'll cause problems if you don't know what you're doing.
I don't even know what you're trying to accomplish. What exactly is it?

I was just being careful before I start flashing my vibrant. I recently rooted and it wasn't bad and wanted to go further but thought of slowing down and learning what I read all over this forum and came up with these questions...I have made Nandroid backup now so I will try flashing custom ROM over this weekend!

it's easy.. just put it on your root of /sdcard
boot into clockwork recovery
flash a zip on your sdcard
select the one u want to flash and then reboot

as zephiK said... best not to mess with radio and kernels until you are comfortable. Not sure we even have optimized radios yet.

the quickest way to flash a rom. put the rom in a folder on the internal memory and use rom manager to isntal a rom from SD... It's a great idea to leave the clockwork update.zip in the root of your internal just incase you need clockwork recovery for a nandroid restore.

I want to get Froyo installed if I can over weekend and be able to get Ad-Hoc working.
Does Froyo have Ad-Hoc capability or requires separate patch?
when you say flash a zip on sdcard, do you mean internal storage?

Yes. Everything is on the INTERNAL sd card, not your sd card. So it'll always be /sdcard/ not /sdcard/sd/.
There is not a 100.00% functional Froyo ROM, there is the international leaked rom modified by Eugene that doesn't flash the baseband radio and kernel. But it is highly buggy and not suggested to be used as a daily driver. Froyo is coming very soon (not officially announced but rumored to be later this month).

I read lot on froyo since last post and you are right, it's not as good as official rom so I think I will wait as I need something reliable. Ya hopefully it will be out by end of month! Hey guys again and again, thank you so much!
sorry that I am asking totally different but only because I haven't got any replies on original thread....
stock Email app that I have setup, (2 separate hotmail accounts), they work so good but only thing is that email is displayed in plain-text format. Does anyone know how to change it to show HTML format? I can't find that option...!

I need help installing Obsidian

I am trying to install the new Obsidian based on froyo 2.2 with the Samsung Vibrant. I rooted it using the one click root and downloaded ROM manager. When I try to back up my current ROM the phone reboots and says E: Can't open /cache/update.zip (bad) Installation aborted.
Because of this I cannot install the Obsidian ZIP file because the same error message pops up.
redownload rom and dont use rom manager, it will erase your internal sd card. Use clockwork recovery and then flash a fresh downloaded obsidian rom

I use ROM Manager like 50 times a day and my SD card never gets wiped.
is clockwork recovery within ROM manager? So i click on Reboot into recovery or Flash ClockworkMod Recovery? Thanks for the help also.
Wait, is this your first time flashing a ROM? Walk us through what you've done so far.
I'm guessing you had your USB plugged in, and didn't get a good flash of clockwork. Unplug your USB, go into clockwork, and flash the latest version of clockwork. Then reboot, go back into clockwork, try to backup and see what you get
Here is what I did:
1. One-click root
2. Download ROM Manager from market
3. Downloaded Obsidian and placed it on my SD card via USB
4. Opened ROM Manager and clicked Backup current ROM, which is where i got the error message that /cache/update.zip could not be read
5. Tried to install obsidian by clicking Install ROM from SD Card and choosing the obsidian that I put on my SD card and I get the error saying /cache/update.zip could not be read (bad) installation aborted.
FIRST WRONG SECTION
notw thats out of the way, In Rom manager click reboot into recovery, then if you have blue text on your screen click reinstall packages, thenmanually pick thee rom to flash from the other (green text) recovery
PS WRONG SECTION
Iuse think free office. Navigate to download folder. Click the zip. Hit Clockworkmod recovery. Ok. Ok. Now let it do its thing. Enjoy. Personally I don't like it.. im back to fusion... didn't like lack of black. and double tap features... big down sides for me... and twiz.. so I'm back to fusion1.2... and LOVE IT! Only one to beat it is Bionix themselves and I'm waiting very patiently!

Was your USB mounted to your computer when you clicked "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" in ROM Manager? That will cause the error you have.
If so, disconnect from the computer, reboot, launch ROM manager, flash clockworkmod, and then try to backup your current ROM again.

One in the same here brother. Read my posts before. I'll try to help you through here, but you are in the wrong section, and this post isn't long for this world. A couple tips for you:
1) Read up on these programs you are using. Thankfully you're dealing with a mostly unbrickable phone, but I don't think anyone here is looking forward to walking you through an Odin recovery. You can **** stuff up. Write that down on a piece of paper in front of you.
2) Read the forum guidelines. People will be a lot nicer if you post in the correct forum.
Ok, sorry for not posting in the appropriate forum. I think I got it and my mistake was not flashing clockwork because when I backup my current ROM I no longer get that error. Right now I am using Titanium Backup to backup my stuff and then I am going to try the Obsidian flash again.. but does the Titanium Backup save my text messages?

Good, good. A bad clockwork flash is the only thing I've ever seen cause that error message. At least you've given a good google reference for other people that mess that up.
I've never used Titanium backup for anything other than app backup, so I don't know about texts. I believe it can be done, but I don't know what to select. Maybe take a look in the market? I think there are some SMS backup apps there if that's all you're concerned about.
OP -
I had the exact same problem as you, and I tried everything. Surprisingly enough, what fixed it for me was how I copied the ROM zip file to the phone. When I mounted the phone to the computer and dragged and dropped, I got the error. I had tried copying the file at least 3 or 4 times this way, and I always got the error. The error went away when I decided to try an ADB push of the zip file to the Internal memory card. I still don't know why it fixed it for me, but it's worth a try.

Wrong section dude. But um when you said u only opened rom manager to press back up current rom?..if so you got that error cause the wrong update.zip is on the root of sd...go back to rom, manager and click flack cwm click allow when it asks for root,n then pick the vibrant one.
OP - Do not worry about backing up your current ROM. You are going to 2.2 and your ROM now is 2.1. IF you decide to go back to a 2.1 ROM flash an all new one (ie. Bionix Fusion or Final) that comes with a 2.1 Kernel. If you try to go to your backed up ROM though Rom manager without getting a new kernel you will soft brick your phone, and as you stated this is your first try, a soft brick can be a little scary. To be on the safe side delete your backup in your phone now so you won't forget and be tempted to go back to that old ROM without the proper kernel installed and ready to be flashed also in your phone. Just wanted throw that out there for ya!

Thread moved to Q&A.
Maybe it's a noob question, but after update to 2.2, how do I revert all the apps and games I have currently on Bionix 1.1. I can reinstall them, but what about save states? Any way to transfer that when update is done to Froyo, or we always need to start from scratch on every new update?

[Q] Ok..so I grew a pair and I'm rooted and backed up. (( update.zip question ))

I was in Clockwork Recovery after backing up my stock system (this is my first time) it gave me the options in green text: Reboot, reinstall update.zip, etc.
I chose reboot and everything loaded up fine and after checking in Rom Manager I have a backup of my system. I just want to know if that was the right choice. or should I have reinstalled update.zip
I guess my question revolves around update.zip.
What is that file? I know I originally used it to gain root access but do I need to reinstall it from clockwork recovery everytime before rebooting? and when should I delete it? and are there any negative consequences for not doing either?
As you can tell I'm a noob....but hey I can't believe I'm rooted and backed up at the moment. I'm gonna stop here before flashing any custonm roms and get this question answered first.
I think you are fine. I would not worry so much, i have deleted the update.zip, but since you booted up into ClockWork Recovery you are most likely fine.
I am booted back up completely and the stock os is running and I'm still rooted. I just want to know what that option inside of clockwork recovery means. What is the reason to reinstall update.zip from clockwork recovery and what is the reason to reboot? And once I'm booted back up and running when/why do I go into my files and delete update.zip?
It's not that I'm worried...I just want to know why I'm doing what I'm doing.
I would keep the file. Less chance of failure.
You are only going to use cwr for this:
Backup/restore system
Wipe cache, factory wipe, etc
Flashing rom's (install from sd card)
Don't worry about the other stuff.
I'm confused by the op, not sure how you made a backup from how it reads.
I think I made the backup by flashing into clockwork recovery from rom manager. It started with the purple text recovery mode and I hit reinstall packets. Then it went into the green text clockwork recovery....I think. I've only done it once.
So in clockwork recovery I choose the backup/restore option and then the backup option. So then the phone I assume began the backup process and displayed many lines of white text. At the very end it said something about not being able to mount my ext sd card (which) had me worried.....but then it brought up the menu again. The top option was reboot, the second was reinstall update.zip and I didn't pay attention to the rest because I was pretty sure I needed one of the first two....I just didn't know which one. I selected reboot and the phone then booted into the stock os and was still rooted. Is the fact that it wasn't able to mount my ext sd card at the end of the backup process an issue? I'm able to find a backup in rom manager. Also, if the backup process works correctly should the phone reboot by itself?
What I'm asking is what am I booting from when I choose "reboot" from clockwork recovery and what does it mean to choose "reinstall (packet?) update.zip"? I thought update.zip was what I needed to root.
This last step wasn't in your tutorial (purple text menu) so maybe something didn't go as it should have.
I'm not sure.
Thanks s15274n for the tutorial btw. Its by far the most helpful concise instructions I've found and is really appreciated.

The update.zip in the root of the internal SD card is clockwork recovery (CR). When you install CR it does not overwrite your phone's recovery. What it does is install that update.zip in the root of the SD card. When you want to use CR, you need to "update packages" which will flash that update.zip which contains the CR package. That will load CR into memory only and still does not overwrite the original recovery on the phone. When you reboot into recovery from ROM Manager, it automatically reboots and applies the update.zip and places you into CR. If you enter recovery manually (via buttons on boot), you will need to "re-install packages" from the stock recovery to get CR.
So if you want to use CR, keep that update.zip in the root of the SD card. If you erase it, you will need to re-install it (using ROM Manager) before you can use CR instead of the stock recovery. I hope that makes sense. If not, here is the explanation straight from Koush on how it works.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734164&highlight=clockwork
^^ You are all good then.
The SD-EXT is not going to backup, because you do not have a partiotion on your external SD card (no need for one, like some other phones require). This is normal from what you described.
You will never use the apply update.zip option in CWR... just dont pay any mind to it.
When you select reboot system now, that is all it is.... you are basically saying "Cool, I did everything I needed to do (backup/flash a rom/wipe, etc)... and now I am ready to reboot my phone... ie, you are basically cutting your phone on.
Positive you did, but you can open rom manager, click on manage backups and you should see a file there that has a format kinda like YYYYMMDDTIME, that is the backup you made... no action needed, just an easy way to verify you made a backup of your system.

Thanks guys. I'm glad to have that cleared up so I understand it. Gives me more confidence to do the other things I want to do.
I got confused with the fact that I need to delete the update.zip file after rooting and the fact thats its there again after flashing cw and backing up.
Sometimes I need things spelled out for me. Makes complete sense now.

[Q] Partition Question

I'm sorry if this info is already posted, I found similar info in my searches but not exactly what I'm looking for.
I just bought a G and its coming tomorrow. I plan to install clockwork and try out some ROMs (probably VEGAN first). I've seen a lot of information that partitioning the internal memory to 2048/0 is a good idea, but that it will wipe out the internal memory. My questions:
1) Is this accurate? Should I do this before installing custom ROMs?
2) When people say it wipes out EVERYTHING, does that mean the stock OS is gone at that point? Will I still be able to boot into Clockwork at that point to install a ROM?
3) Is it possible / what is the best way to backup the internal memory prior to doing this? Or should I not even worry about that as I will be installing a custom ROM after anyways. EDIT: I should say I'm semi-familiar with clockword with my Droid, I know you can do backups via clockword, is doing a clockwork backup prior to partitioning going to get everything I need in case I brick it? This one may have answered itself hehe.
Thanks!

2- Yes and possibly more...
3- NVFLASH BACKUP then FULL CLOCKWORK Backup
4- then do whatever your are covered...

Ok, so first thing after I get the G Tab, is install nvflash on my PC, hook up via USB and run your batch file? Should I do this before or after installing clockwork? Do I turn the g Tab on after plugging in the USB?
I really appreciate your help.
Partitioning 2048/0 from CWM recovery doesn't wipe the ROM space. I have booted into the tablet right after doing this and nothing else, so clearly it still has the OS. It just wipes /SDCARD (the built in memory).

Read the batch remark, it explain, but yes you install the APX drivers, then plug usb, power on with volume - and run the batch files.
Ramerco is also right when he say partition of the 2048GB only erase the 2G/16G part
but it's still a good idea to keep a full image from the early tablet, there's a NVFLASH recovery from bekit availlable as well
Also there's a shell script called inandop.sh that is taking care of this if there's no sdcard it will create it...
Thanks again guys!

With installed ADW Launcher EX:
This build is for Viewsonic Viewpad 7. I’ve made this build mainly because I had one big problem with stock one – it was offering little space for my apps. I've used this opportunity to add extra features and remove some annoying ones. Here is the list of changes:
based on latest official stock Viewpad 7 firmware Android 2.2.2
added Darktremor Apps2SD 2.7.5.2 functionality (require that you have extra partition on your SD card for storing your apps; exact procedure to create one is described in installation procedure)
fully deodexed and zipalligned ROM
ROM is rooted (Superuser.apk + su)
installed BusyBox with support for init.d scripts
replaced "Welcome" boot animation with stock android 2.2 animation
installed Gingerbread keyboard
installed Morelocale2 for more languages
modified framework-res.apk and services.jar with Gingerbread look like + % battery
removed Aldiko,RSS, TouchPAL_M20
updated gapps to newest version (Gmail, GoogleQuickSearchBox, Maps, Market, VoiceSearch) & YouTube
modified host file for ad-free
Now you don’t have to worry about decreasing internal storage when you install more application. You don’t also lose access to application when you phone is connected in drive mode to computer, because application data is being hold on ext3 partition on SD card. That partition isn’t mounted when your phone is connected to computer. The things that are redirected to this partition are: /data/app, /data/app-private and /data/dalvik-cache. Firmware should also work with compatible devices such as: Cherry Mobile Superion, Commtiva Linx N700, Olivepad VT-100, Spice MI700, and Camangi FM600 but I don't have these devices, so I cannot verify. As always make a backup before installing any custom firmwares.
Requirements:
installed Clockwork Recovery Partition as described here [TOOL] Viewpad 7 Backup, Root & Recovery
Changelog:
V1.0
initial release
Installation:
Power down your device.
Power on device holding power button and both volume keys simultaneously.
Upon power up you will see the birds logo and 'enter recovery' text in the top left corner of the screen.
Use the volume keys to step through the menu, power to select and back. (there is bug in clockwork when you press volume keys it jumps 2 steps; to jump one step press and hold volume and then press power to select)
Select the "advanced->Partition SD Card" item, next select size for your Apps2SD partition (1024MB recommended), next select 0 as size of swap partition. (Remember that this will delete all data on your SD card, so make backup of SD card if you need !!!)
After the partitioning will be done select the "reboot system now" item.
Using USB cable connection or SD card reader copy CleanViewpad7_signed_v1.0.zip to root folder of SD card.
Power down your device.
Power on device holding power button and both volume keys simultaneously.
Select the "backup and restore->Backup" item to make a backup of the current firmware in case something goes wrong. The backed up ROM should be located in: /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/date&time/
Select the "wipe data/factory reset->Yes – delete all user data” to clear old stuff.
Select the "install zip from sdcard->choose zip from sdcard" item and select CleanViewpad7_signed_v1.0.zip.
After flashing will be done select the "reboot system now" item. First boot may take a few minutes.
Migrate from stock or another build:
Make backup of your phone using Titanium Backup (select all user applications).
Copy all files and folders from SD card to local folder on your computer.
Install Clockwork Recovery Partition, create partition on SD card and install ROM as described in installation guide.
Copy all files and folders from local folder on your computer back to SD card.
Restore applications using Titanium Backup and reboot your phone.

Nice work bro.although it would be better to use the latest a2sd version of darktremor(2.7.5.3)
which supports ext4 partition and data2sd feature.so instead of adding a2sd 2.7.5.2 you can provide a link to the flashable zip of the latest DT-a2sd (http://www.darktremor.info/files/a2sd/dtapps2sd-2.7.5.3-beta04-signed.zip). it works i have tested it.

yes i have it rooted. what i had to do was boot the stock rom boot.img with this rom. working great right now.
I followed the directions in the first post and then downloaded the file from post#2.
Once you have the file from post #2 on your SD card, rename it to update.zip and then boot your device into Clockwork Recovery and select the "update from zip" option. Rebooted and my device now has 167MB of available space on the internal phone storage.
Thanks guys... this is the way the device should have shipped from Viewsonic, and although it aint no Gingerbread, I'm finally happy with my Viewpad after several months if dissapointment.
One thing that I find to be very strange is that it appears that some data is saved somewhere?
Even after I performed the following:
Formatting the SD Card
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Wipe dalvik cache
Load the new ROM
Did not log into any kind of google account and basically skipped all the setup options.
The device still shows all the wireless hotspot data that I logged into before. Why does it have the password for my WiFi router after all those steps were performed.
If I were to sell the device to someone else, is there any way to be sure ALL data has been cleared from the device?
Cheers!
Great work, good to see another ROM for the Viewpad!!!
Will for sure try it...
A few questions:
You are using the a2sd version of darktremor(2.7.5.3), I personally use Link2SD which also moves all data, cache,... to the 2nd partition of the SD card...
It's actively developed and it's free, so check it out...
Is this ROM with the kernel from tj-style? Then we can overclock to 824Mhz and it gives a nice speed boost...
If then you do not want to use it for your ROM, you can set it to the stock speed with SetCPU...
Thanks,
Nick
Since many people are requesting for TJstyle's oc'd kernel.I modified this ROM to add the kernel and some other stuff.
Here is the download link:

My quadrant score crossed the 1000 mark for the first time

people have been asking so i did it, made a video on how this can be used to restore back from CM7
This saved the day, after I restored my nandoid of rooted stock I lost all access to the barnes noble shop and could not access anything related to barnes and noble. I read of other people restoring there's back to stock and re rooting after experiencing the same issues as I to fix that issue. I knew there was an easier way and restoring this nand was it, seeing your back up was never registered in the first place. Your the man and I will be donating!
Sent from my BNTV250 saved by Albert's recovery rom.
Not working. Nothing working.
Ooo
Will you make one for 1.4.1? Or is there that much of a difference? Thanks for your work man!

Trying very very very hard to do a factory restore but don't know how to do this:
3. Flash Rom w/ CWM Recovery
4. Use recovery flasher to flash stock recovery
5. Run Unrooter
Put file:CWMrestore_1_4_0_ plus NTV16gbV4_6 in sd card, booted into cwm. In video you have two cards. Not sure which card this one is and what to put on other card. Assume that this file is an update or something and now doesn't require two?
Trying to do factory restore and don't know how to do above. Chose zip from sd card, chose cwmrestore zip file and then it finds and starts to install then it is aborted. I have no idea if I'm even supposed to be doing this but there it is.
I have tried so many things from simple (the simple failed reboots method to very complex methods that I tried to follow very closely) and read so many threads and watched so many you tube videos that I can't even tell you how many things I've tried. Nothing works at least the way I'm doing it. I need to get this back to stock and start over because it is really f'd up. I think it was due to a bad sd card I used from the beginning.
Thanks for any help.

Can you access clockwork?
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
I can't get this to work with CM7. After choosing the zip file it goes through, but ends up with "Installation aborted."
I also tried wiping dalvik, cache, and format system, but nothing will wipe CM7 and return to stock.
What I when I select update from .zip file:
-- Installing: /sdcard/CWMrestore_1_4_0_plusNTV16gbV4_6.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.
you have to unzip and extract the clockworkmod recovery folder to your root sd card...

Not quite sure how. The recovery folder consisting of the etc folder and one file, recovery-from-boot.p, goes to the root and the rest of the zip goes to the recovery folder and renamed to factory.zip?
When I do that, it still brings up Cynaboot and I'm presented with the menu. Choosing zip from card and trying to update by choosing factory.zip still goes to the previous Installation aborted error.
---Update--
Wait, I'm mixing up restore methods, as I've tried a number of ways to restore to stock.
I'm in the process of trying to restore by copying to the root of the sd as you recommended.
Not sure what to do next
I decided to use the CM7 from the sd. I worked through this restore, however, I got the following message after it processed through restring .android_secure:
Error while restoring /sdcard/.android_secure!
I tried it again and keep getting the message:
Checking MD5 sums...
MD5 mismatch!
Not sure what to do next...any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

It worked beautifully. I had to Backup using CWM first to check on the folder structure, and saw that it was all neatly placed as-is in the zip folder. Restored and am now back on stock (and using CM7 on SD card).
Thanks!

I am EXTREMELY sad to report that the new "backup" image will not boot on my NT8.
I went through all the steps and CWM flashed the backup without any errors. It then returned to the main menu and I hit "Reboot System."
It just turns off (or goes into a sleep mode.) Nothing but a black screen. The Nook Power cable displays the yellow-red that seems to suggest that it is in a SOD.
I have tried every iteration of powering off for 30 secs and then trying, with/without the SDCard, with/without the Nook Power adapter, and nothing will turn it on.
However, as soon as I put either @meghd00t's NEW recovery SD or my CM7Alpha SD, they boot up without problems.
I CAN do ADB if there is a command that I need to issue to clear some register on the device? Anyone know what I should do?
Ray
After rooting with your sd i can`t access settings-keyboard, error: The aplication Settings has stoped bla bla bla...i wouldn`t bother, but i really need russian keys sometimes...(
btw, thanks a lot for booting cwm img and for recovery zip for sure too, saved me from brain damage)
PS: Nevermind fixed that by running any cut, creating shortcut and adding russian
i have a 8gb nt and i tried unbricking using this method... flashed recovery... and still stuck at the n screen. does not move past it.
Do I flash the rom or put the folder on sd card and restore if I am trying to do the unbrick process on my 8gb nt? I tried the restore but still just get stuck at the n screen.
any help would be appreciated.

after flashing recovery, try clearing cache and devlik while in CWM, then reboot.
