May you help me with some questions I have:
- Is a FULL file explorer preloaded ??
- Can I download/EDIT/save office docs ??
- Can I hot auto check my hotmail ??
- A win live mesenger is present ??
- Can I easily change the UI or is it "closed" ?? (sort of the xperia "panels")
THANKS in advance

Following on from the previous answer
1) Not pre-installed, but you can easily download and install a free one directly from the Market (i.e from the phone itself) - ASTRO File Manager and ES File Explorer are two good ones, but there are plenty to choose from
2) Again, not pre-installed, but you can download a free app called "Documents to Go" that will let you read office docs. http://www.dataviz.com/ - You'll need to buy the full version (currently $15) to be able to edit docs too
3) Googling suggests that you can probably make it work using pop3 - I don't use hotmail, so I can't try it out
4) Nothing pre-installed, but there are lots on the market. I'm currently using Trillian which works nicely (free beta, will probably become a paid app)
5) Yes - there are lots of alternative launchers, so if you're not happy with the S.E. "4 corners" homescreen, you can easily switch for another one - most of these are free, too
So, it sounds like you might have to fork out some cash to be able to do everything you want

I use maildroid for all my email accounts including Hotmail. Just download it for free in market

THANKS for your replies.
Let me see if I get it right:
OK so Android looks like a different approach (more iPhone-esque than pocketPC-esque) but able to expand to more advanced capabilities with some investment
(and the market looks pretty ample)
One final Q:
Front camera for video call ??
(I could just check pdadb.net for that one, but sometimes having the phone in-hand brings on some surprises)

No video calling afaik, though I suppose some app could potentially do it via the front camera.
Although the launcher can be changed easily, the OS theming requires the phone to be rooted and a system file to be replaced to change, so you'll have a lot of blue until the phone is rooted.
There are thousands of apps on the market and also around on the web, some are junk, some are great (including a lot of free ones), you shouldn't have too much trouble finding software to fill whatever needs you have.
Android is a pretty fantastic phone OS, I don't think you'll be dissatisfied with it, the user experience is much the same across different phones, so really it's about getting it on hardware that can fill your needs.

front cam ??
so it DOES have a front camera
thanks for the info
good news !!

Hey gtrab,
I was just like you, I always swore bt WM. And never wanted to try anything new. But while I was on a trip, my dash was bugging out on me and I needed a new phone. I went for the x10 mini pro cuz it was cheap.
Now my view has changed, android took a while to get used to from wm. Not a lot of things were intergrated like wm, I needed an app for every little thing. Just to get a comm manager thing going, I needed to download like 6 widgets for it. And there was no folders to organize the apps. Things weren't in abc order. But installing a new launcher solved it.
The thing about the x10 that is making me stick with android and ditching wm6.5 (maybe untill wm7 comes out) is there is no crashed. Android runs smooth and stable. I havent soft reset my phone in 2 months. Even tho a wm rom was stable it still has issues and I needed to soft reset it once a week just to get something to work again. Even my girl friend likes my phone, she always hated my wm phones cause it was hard to use, and it would always mess up on us when im talking to her over the phone. It would always go like, "the comm manager isnt loading, I need to reset the phone to turn on the bluetooh, ill call u back"
Because of this I think im going to stick with android now.

Thanks for your words Ray_Jai
I am 100% sure to go Android as soon as possible, my only concern is "which" phone to choose
The X10 mini pro is an amazing little phone, the only thing stopping me from buying it is the screen res 'cause I do a lot of web navigation, and the older android version (Froyo has flash 10.1 web support)
The newest Desire Z and Moto droid 2 world edition are tempting me

Np,
The small screen is a killer for me too, but I do most of my web reading from RSS readers, so it's ok for me. I only use the phone for email and light web surfing, I rarely play games or watch movies on it. I tried to install some games, but many of the games weren't supported. so if you're into that, it might not be that good. but for everything else, it does a pretty good job.

Android Capabilities?

Hi Fellow XDA'ers!
I have a touch dual (with WM6.5).
I like the look of the Hero but have a few reservations.
Firstly, I read posts that it struggles to sync with Outlook!!?? - can this be sorted? - ActivSync (by BTooth) is very handy and does the job well.
Secondly, I like having the apps such as IGO8 or TOMTOM to hand on my phone, should I need it.
Can I install these apps (or similar) on the Hero?....In other words - can WM apps work on Android?
thanks

I think syncing with Outlook over Bluetooth is out of the question. It can sync Contacts and Calendar (only those two) over the USB cable with the use of the 'HTC Sync' software. That software is not available _yet_ on the HTC site, but apparently it IS included on the memorycard included with the Orange bundle that is now shipping.

Those two applications are not (yet?) available for Android. There are a few other navigation solutions available, but I'm under the impression they are not the level of iGO or TomTom. Also, I have no idea on which countries they support or what price they are available at.

No. There are a whole bunch of Android apps, but software made for Windows Mobile will simply not work (and never will) on Android. They will have to make a special Android version for it, and for utilities and tweaks that is simply not easily done.

ALKs CoPilot Live 8 is available on the market and is quite competitively priced at £22.60 for a one region version (e.g. UK maps).
I've not played with it extensively, as I bought it as a backup for my regular Garmin satnav unit, but it is definitely much slicker than some of the other alternatives for Android that I've tried (e.g. AndNav).

Seems to be a good TomTom alternative! Thanks for the Tip! And they even have 'whole of western europe' or only 'benelux'. That makes it much more affordable if you never leave The Netherlands for example .
Since I'm an Android newbie myself (well, not even an Android newbie, still waiting for my Hero): On the CoPilot site, on 'where to buy' to say to go to the Android market. But they also have three picture, some sort of square barcode. I've seen those more around Android oriented pages. How do they work?
It's a QR code (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_Code) which is essentially a 2-dimensional barcode that can hold a variety of data. In this case, it is holding a URL.
If you download a barcode reader from the market (e.g. Barcode Scanner by ZXing team, which is the one I use) you can use the phones camera to "read" the barcode and it will then allow you to jump to the URL in the browser.

Dave
Winmo apps on Android
You never know what could happen guys!
I currently dual boot windows 7 ultimate and Linux Ubuntu.
And as all linux users are aware, there is a nice little app called wine, Wine allows us to run and use many windows apps in a Linux enviroment...
Cant be that much different with Android (linux) and windows mobile.. can it?
Would be a fantastic step and i think possibly the final push for many winmo users!
Im still struggling to choose my self....From HD to Hero?? mmmm
There are few things you need to know about the young android:
1. You cannot save apps to memory card unless rooted.
2. You cannot receive files via bluetooth unless rooted.
overall, Android is a lot better than Winmob
Sorry if this is a stupid question :-(
I run a number of Java applets under WINMO via an applet manager (ESmertec for example). Will these run on Android?
CoPilot is working brilliantly on my Magic and I'll be putting it on my Hero when I get it at weekend.
Here's a great thing - any apps that I've purchased from the Android Market are tied to my google checkout account - When I sign in on my Hero and go to market, those apps will show as purchased and downloadable for me. Also my calendar and contacts will automatically sync to my Hero.
As far as WM apps are concerned, I've used both WM6 and android devices - Not missing anything on my Magic that I had on WM now that Turn By Turn Nav is there. Some apps are already ported over - Docs To go, and recently Touchpal Keyboards.
The ability to search for, find, pay for (if needed) and download software on the fly is just priceless. The fact that most apps are free or very cheap is even better. I'd not go back to WinMo now for anything...
However, you're just gonna have to get one in your hand and see for yourself - its all personal preference amongst the top handsets really.
well my upgrade is being delivered in the morning! yey! HTC Hero on orange..
Wonder if tomtom will port any time soon? should be an easy job considering the tom tom units are linux driven!

I've been a TomTom user (on my HTC Trinity and HTC Touch Pro) for almost 3 years now. My HTC Hero will be arriving on Monday morning and I'm actually pretty excited about the change I'll be making to CoPilot.
Not that there's anything wrong with TomTom, but the newer version of CoPilot looks very cool, and it might be nice to try something different.

I have heard a lot of people complaining about the version of CoPilot crashing on the Hero, not sure why this is. TomTom are releasing an iPhone version so who knows, might make its way over to Android in about 3 years?
For me, Copilot certainly crashed. It was not a patch on the stability of Garmin XT. The application felt unfinished with a lot of times when not a full crash, lack of keyboard reponse. Tbh, this failure was the straw that broke the Hero's back
I've not had a single problem with copilot on my magic. Fully tested with postcodes etc and long journeys. Its VERY cheap compared to most satnavs, can be used without any data assistance at all, and very quick to reroute etc.
I have heard about some probs but they have mostly seemed to be related to people trying to hack it or get the maps running without paying, and I know that copilot has added a few layers of security since I bought mine for magic - initially it just installed and needed your google checkout number.
Then it needed that, and you then got a license code and device ID thingy.
I had an update early on from version .303 to .327 which made mine stop loading - One email to support, told me to uninstall ALL, including the maps folder, and it was back working perfectly... I personally think the voices of folks having probs trying to get it running without paying are clouding the issue a bit - I've only heard from one (cbailey) who I know paid, but still got crashes.
Daisy - Was happy with my G1 (since Jan) Happy with my Magic(since beginning of June), and gonna be happy with my Hero I think...

You're in the UK right? I have been looking into copilot as a replacement for my old TomTom once I get my Hero. And although copilot said on their website they have european versions, if I browse the store (though Cyrket for example) I only see their USA map pack / application. Is this location / localization dependant somehow? Why can't I see the european maps in the market?

I think we got a big android fan here
In the Market, you get the option for a One Region map - Uk and Ireland comes under that - for £25.99 (Market shows 22 something but then checkout adds VAT for UK)
I think these options are only seen/available on market for android phones. I think they are not offered as products for other platforms, and you only get details once you have bought CoPilot 8 for android.
I personally downloaded CoPilot Central and got my maps via PC through that. You get a Membership name and password when you checkout at google Checkout - I was sent an email with details of that. The actual copilot programe for android downloads to your fone OTA like other apps, but the map fetcher is on PC. I think you CAN get the maps OTA to your fone, but I thougyht that seemed silly and would take ages and be heavy on your data allowance etc.
CoPilot central is free I think - You can get it here

No problems at all with CoPilot APART from TouchFlo seems to lock up when I exit. Not sure if anyone else has this problem.
Other than that, it has no lag what-so-ever, which I used to always have with TomTom. Big thumbs up for me, even more so when I sort out the locking issue when exit, but thats no biggie.

Do Android apps work on all builds? Do Dream apps work on Hero?

So someone I know surprised me today by saying he's thinking of purchasing the Hero. See, the thing is that he's not the most tech savvy person in the world, and he admitted that he had hoped I would offer him help in using it and generally improve its usability.
Problem is that I'm a Windows Mobile guy. I really don't know anything more about Android than that it's Google's mobile OS. That's it.
So I was hoping some people here could answer the question I had of whether Android apps work across builds? For example, do the apps made for the HTC Dream work on the Hero?
As of currently, I know Google is making a hell of a lot of builds (Original, Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, and so on), and they seem to be making it at a hyperpace. I also imagine that this might continue for quite a while, so this is an important question to me.
Thank you to all for reading!
Currently all Android phones run the same OS and alle apps works cross-phones. There has been some conflict with apps running on the Hero because of the Sense UI but this can be fixed by turning Sense of or use an application called Bar control wich allows for use of the original UI with ease.
You should tell your friend not to worry, Android is pretty easy and basic in general use.
Dont take my word for gospel but this is my perspective and my experience as a Hero user. I love it and your friend is gonna love it to.
R. Duke, thank you for your answer and reassurance.
I had not realize that all of the Android phones were currently using the same build (I thought the Dream was using the original Android build and Hero was using the newer Cupcake), so I'm glad to hear there will be complete app compatibility.

Most Dreams would have either received an OTA update to 1.5 (Cupcake) or its owners have likely rooted their devices and applied a custom rom, but again these are all likely to be based on Cupcake.

I'm planning on getting the Sprint HTC Hero in October. Do you know of any conflicts with the following applications:
Astrid
PDANet
Where
Evernote(Web version)
Documents To Go
Sprite Backup
My Backup Pro
Last.fm
GPhone Manager Pro
Astro File Manger
AndExplorer
TasKiller
ReedR News Reader
Flixster
I doubt that any one can tell you definitively as the phone is not out, and even then I doubt someone is going to download and test such a specific list of apps. However, I moved from a G1 to a Hero, and not found a single compatibility problem yet. When the firmware on the G1 went to Cupcake, some apps did break, but in general they were fixed by their devs very quickly.
Regards,
Dave
Well... there are actually some difference between the HTC Dream and all the other Android phones currently; the Dream have a physical keyboard. Imagine a game that uses the physical keyboard running on a phone with only the virtual keyboard (ScummVM to name one such app). How the hell are you supposed to use a function mapped to the "U" button without a keyboard?
The game Cestos for example have a chat function. The players can chat with each other during matches. Those with a Dream can easily chat while those witrh non-physical keyboards will have to press Menu and then press up the keyboard to start typing (it works but it isn't fluid).

Essential apps

Had my Streak since Monday after finally deciding against the HD2. I've been a winmo user for years but didn't like the idea of being stuck with 6.5 for another 18 months.
I had built up a huge selection of fave apps for my HD and was reluctant to let some of them go, so I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread for everyone's essential apps for the Streak.
Having only had the "phone!" for a few days, here's a couple of apps i'm liking so far:
1. RockPlayer - play avi files and more.
2. Google Navigation - although comes shipped in UK.
3. MyPlayer - BBC iPlayer.
4. AppKiller - although this is the only task manager i have tried so far.
5. EsFileExplorer - again the only one tried so far.
6. XDA app - nice interface and faster than using the browser.
7. ColourUp - i love editing photos and this is pretty cool.
8. Google SkyMap - works brilliantly.
9. Swype - only just started using this, for me it's brilliant.
Ok, there's my keepers for now, how about yours? I've not really found any great games that fit will on the screen yet although i'm liking Winds Of Steel.
Same as yours really, but would like to add Astro file explorer - great for installing apps outside market. And if you like reading as much as i do Laputa is a awesome ebook reader with ipad style bookshelf and page turning and loads of online books.
Tried quite a few games and at the mo playing Zenonia little rpg ala zelda which is a nice enough. Game Boid is a great emulator for all those classics. Mazeoid is a free pac man game runs great on the streak.
Im experimenting with different keyboards, the dell one works great but the numpad throws off the whole symmetry. Ive tried smart keyboard which is quite nice with lots of skins, but i found it slow so went back. Any suggestions would be very welcome...
Gonna add a new one as of yesterday....kindle reader.
just bought a couple of books and woopee for some reason you can buy them at american prices. Lot cheaper than the UK store/mobipocket etc.
Oh yeah and Rockplayer...rocks...will probably be my first 'purchased' app once it get's released (I've not had a need for anything else that requires paying for yet.)
oops. forgot I don't play many games but Bonsai Blast is really addictive and fits the screen great.

Great, was looking for a decent ebook reader for the ebooks i already have, I also think the numeric keypad is a dumb thing - not thought about as it forces you to hold the streak lob-sided to type, as you, still looking for a decent alternative.

Nice find, buy them cheap while you can
Gave Bonsai Blast a go and i agree looks great and a pretty fun and adictive thanks.
Kindle looks good but like Guest69 i have a collection of ebooks i need to be able to import, maybe this will be possible later...
Also found a few good widgets. Htc smooth calendar (other one was buggy) looks great, matching the dell theme better then the default and shows 3 appointments. VolumeWidget is on my home screen, gives you 3 buttons for preset volume profiles.
Finally the Zedge app is like the app store of ringtones, has search, preview and install functions. Theres also a wallpaper section, but i havent tried it as i have made my own seamless sets like the o2 wallpapers (cut up and resized some high res dual monitor wallpapers) ill post some here when i get a minute.
My favorite book reader is aldiko, and it has limited support for importing books as well as long as they are epub format.
Hi all,
Well I've had my Streak now for a little over 3 weeks and have now flashed my first custom Rom which comes Rooted and with Superuser permissions plus has allowed me to remove from the Rom the apps i had no need for.
So here are my installed apps in no particular order.
Astro File Manager: can be used to install apps that come as apk's as opposed to from the market
Barcode Scanner: easy way to install apps form QR codes or just reading Bar codes
3G Watchdog: Monitors your data use over 3G you can set your allowance and it will monitor and alert you
Live Calender: Will bring up upcoming Appointments on your Home screen
F1 Pocket 2010: all you need to stay up to date with F1
Moto GP Pocket 2010: all you need to stay up to date with Moto GP
iSyncr for PC: Easy transfer and sync of iTunes to your Streak
Google Sky Map: Map of the Stars and Planets
Engadget: Widget with scrolling updates
SystemPanelLite Task Manager:Shows you CPU and Memory use
myPlayer: BBC iPlayer
ShootMe: Screen Shots for Rooted devices
Speedtest.net Speed Test
Rock Player: Plays DivX Avi and many other formats in great quality.
Co Pilot Live: Sat Nav with POI'S and Speed Cameras
Gentle Alarm: Great Multiple Alarm app with some unique nice features
Seven Push E-Mail: Real time Push E-Mail with full folder support
Cloud List:Great: shopping or other list app also on line lists that can be shared with others
Tapatalk Pro: handy tool for posting on Forums
TVCatchup Mobile Live TV Streaming with lots of UK channels
Fring: Skype and IM chat app includes Skype Video chat
Superuser Permissions: allows rooted apps permission
Boot Explorer: File explorer and more for Rooted devices
Root Booter: Easy Normal, Recovery or Bootloader Reboot options
Boot Manager: Control over various options and apps on your device
Swype: simply the best keyboard and typing experience ever IMHO
I should mention although System Panel Lite is a task manager that's not what I'm using it for as it also shows CPU and Memory use along with all your Active applications and Inactive cached applications. Personally I'm just not using a task killer or killing any apps at all.
Wow having now made this list i can't believe just how many apps i have installed so far just as well the Streak comes with 2GB for installing them on.
Marc
is there a good Weather app out there
Is there an android application for windows live mail? I haven't found one.

@ Dogman, Mate whats the name of the Barcode reader you use thanks
Hi lufc
It's called Barcode Scanner and it works better then any I've ever used before literally as soon as you frame the QR code it identifies it and gives gives you the option to open the browser which actually opens the download store with the app ready to just hit for download. It still amazes me very time i use it to download a new app just how fast and simple it makes the whole procedure.

My FAVORITE app is Swype. A month ago they were letting people download the app again and I got it for my Nexus One .. I loved it because for some reason I was having a horrible time typing .. When I first got my Streak I typed on it for about 15 minutes and then downloaded Swype again and that is ALL I ever use. I made it the default program for any text and you can always type letter by letter if you are having problems with a certain word. On YouTube there are several GREAT instructional videos on swyping from the maker. I am pretty sure I am getting faster swyping than I was typing on my iphone.
Double post...
Thanks for the barcode scanner tip Marc, its real fast and accurate definitely a keeper.
ROFL @ "XDA_devs is rapidly becoming the McDs of the winmo world, sadly full of rude chavs demanding crap immediately.. "
As for swype, I gave it a try but I wasnt impressed, guess its a preference thing but I can type fast as hell in landscape with a normal kb so long as it can keep up. I found with swype it takes much more finger movement to type each word and you have to look at what you are doing more, not to mention smearing crap all over the screen...
Im still searching for a good alternative to dells stock kb, tried everything in the market with mixed results, but I think I'll just wait till the froyo update and try the ported htc multitouch kb.
@Cypher84
If you mess around with the settings for Swype you can change how long the trace shows for and the same for word prediction i have reduced the time for both which i have found has made the world of difference. Also now Swype has learnt most of my most commonly typed words I'm finding it incredibly fast and accurate and also it's quite forgiving if your not totally accurate. Also for the suggested word to be put in you just start the next word so now after just a short while using Swype it defiantly is my by far preferred method of text input. But like anything just because it's best for me doesn't mean it has to be for everyone else.

I had the same problem but you just need to do this
After you have installed and enabled swype
Open a text input box (what I do is open up the browser, go to google and then hold my finger down in the google search box)
Hold your finger down in this box until a menu appears "Input method"
select Input Method and then it should give you an option of Swype or Android Keyboard, select swype and now it will use that as default
Hope this helps

wat's ur experience on x10 mini pro/mini ?

Hi all,
I am from India and while I was in Bangalore I picked this little android phone. I was in a dilemma which phone to pick, my budget was not too good for any 1gig - android phone so I had to pick this one (backflip from moto or wildfire from HTC was my other options -).
From the very first day that first thing I noticed that I am not that satisfied with the phone apart from the fact it's an android( which I needed badly) and (look of the phone -). I felt no one has used/ experienced / tested this phone before releasing. It's like a B-grade hindi movie, you like the title and then you like nothing.
Even they did not pay a little attention to make icons in a same pattern, games are horrible, I cannot access the market or any other app/widgets with manual configured apns (vodafone, india)--- its like worse dream of my life. I myself hate copy paste but I think people from sony (graphics as well as the developers) need to know this copy paste funda. I was very angry and posted all these in "Update on updates" as MINI PRO USER (may be now lost as around 2000 comments are there).
I don't how come they marketed this one with horrible calling feature, when I try to call or receive the call, the screen goes and needs unlock to find somewhere in the screen a tiny rectangle (if u use any other launcher, opps u even can't find it). Then messaging, in my life this is the first phone which takes ages to show the letter when u use the soft keyboard.
And how come they can make they make "CA gold rush" or something like that with a **** like icon? It's unbelievable, no tester with sony ? or HE is non sense.
Anyway I know I can easily download lots of apk's from here and there (as android market does not work) and make things better. But when is it desirable to purchase a Nike shoe and very first day then go to other painter to do some painting???
I really don't get enough time for doing stuff like changing icons or changing colors of the framework-res.apk. then also I had to spend 2 days to find icons like iphone (please iphone hater don't be angry, we all know the pattern of iphone icons are really good and almost every phone-maker tries to make something like that) or some good png icons and put then all the apk's that came with this and other apps that I needed. Now the phone looks like a phone. But I don't know when SONY will come up with a update that will make this a real phone (at least when I will be able to use the GPRS, Market etc and will be able to pick a incoming with minimum effort, those "SOFTWARE GUYS" made a slider with incoming phone that's like picking a needle huh.......b e a u tiful )
phone is nice and fast... works good. i got adw launcher and i rooted it so i could uninstall alot of pre-installed junk...
its fast, smooth im happy with it.
I know, my phone is also rooted and I changed all the icons through out, and using a launcher customized for me (I made a simple launcher for me) some time. I know we can do a lot of things in android that is one the reason I looked for android device, not WM phone. But my point was when someone is selling (marketing) some product, they should test it thoroughly. Why should the users take the pressure to find a decent launcher or call app??
I really like the phone but:
1- SE support SUCKS.
2- Upgrade to Android 2.1 delayed (Sucks)
3- No news about upgrade to android 2.2 (double sucks).
4- Turn on/off problems :

http://talk.sonyericsson.com/thread/5957
http://talk.sonyericsson.com/thread/6260?tstart=0
If the phone would work as it should, and the SE updates where in date, it should be one of the best phones for me.
My biggest disappointment, coming from WM, is the Android app market...
Yes: ,000's of android apps, but very few well-developed ones. My X1 is a bit like a Swiss Army Knife (without accelerometer, fast CPU etc etc), but the applications out there are plenty, and well designed. Also the WM apps are pretty expensive, comparatively but at least they exist.
The X10 Mini Pro itself, I'm OK with it. A lot of the minor flaws can be remedied by small apps like the SMS Handcent, adding a launcher, that sort of thing...
Biggest issue for me is the Android-wide problem of not being able to modify font size at system level. What were these guys thinking of?
Seems I have a bigger problem with Android, than with the X10 Mini Pro
I'm very pleased with my little "tamagochi" aka X10 mini
The point is i'm coming from a HTC Hero, and I loved it a lot, but the last time sometimes it got frozen i don't know why. I gave a X10 mini to my girlfriend and i got very impressed about the phone and finally I decided to get another one for me, so she and I have the same mobile.
First of all I have to say that the mobile is REALLY fast. Faster than my Hero on a 2.1 android version. Sony Ericsson has done a very good job about that even it running 1.6 android version. The kernel is very light, but for that reason some things doesn't work (i.e. tethering via root).
Good things: fast, very light, small, excellent camera (even better than other high models), excelent touch response
Bad things: BATTERY! (the worst), Android 1.6 and some stuff like launcher (aaaargh), the contact list, Timescape (I hate it) and the facebook links
For me the display isn't a bad thing cuz if not, it wasn't a small phone, and i like the small phones.
Some stuff inside is bad, but you can change perfectly. I mean the awful keyboard... that's very easy to fix with a keyboard from the market. I'm very happy with "Smart Keyboard pro". Nothing to say about the SE launcher... is totally a CRAP, you have to change it inmediately! "ADW Launcher" for 1.6 (on market) is really really good, once installed it, your phone is a true android mobile . Other stuff i didn't like was the SMS app from SE, so I changed it by "ChompSMS" and it works excellent on my X10 mini.
Other point is that some apps don't appear in the market because of the screen resolution. Anyway, I got most of them via Apktor (Aptoide), and they work perfect... I don't remember now what were them.
I want the update to 2.1 ASAP cuz I hope that SE improves the facebook links to the contacts (they said that in their blog) and also to install some apps that need android 2.0 or above, like Whatsapp and new google stuff.
So that's all, I'm very happy with it !!!
Just loving it !!!
It has got style and design features are so good that it is very easy to communicate with just one hand. It's a basic smart phone, great for the basic user. Internet, music, calls, text, chat, e-mail and apps to pay your bills.
The 5MP camera on the X10 mini performed admirably. It was quick to focus even in low light with very low shutterlag for a camera phone. The flash worked quite well for low light portrait shots. Images showed good colors and satisfactory details.
I just love this phone and really can't think a day without it.
Hope to read good reviews from respected community members about this phone......
Regards
Don Zone
My x10 mini is the best phone i've ever had. I have it since about 3 months now. It does everything I need and is very loveable. I have access to app market with no problem. I use the 3g connection as the much as the wifi, use the gps for driving (with google nav).
At first I thought the battery life was awful, but after uncharging completely and recharging fully 3 or 4 times, now I have 2 days of life. The only problems I have for now is not being able to copy text from sms, and cant find a descent azerty keyboard. I am please to know we will get 2.1 by the end of this month so I didn't take the time to fully customise the start screen with a launcher.
My old phones : htc 9100, touch diamond, htc snap.

For the SMS try ChompSMS, it's much better than the native app from SE, you can copy texts and much more, also you can write in landscape, with the original app you can't.
For the keyboard, try smart keyboard pro, I like it a lot, it has a very good algoritm and it can learn words you usually use, etc.
Both of them are in Apktor (Aptoide) for free. I think they are a MUST.

I have had the x10 mini for a week and generally I like it. Its compact and lightweight and has many features.
There is a few annoying things that I dont like.
- Low resolution which doesnt look good.
- Cant have homescreen in landscape mode like the pro (this is very annoying)
- When inputting messages in landscape mode it can be quite unresponsive on occasions.
- The back cover of the phone feels very cheap and creaky.
- Battery life needs to be improved.
- Screen is a smudge magnet and is plastic not glass?
X10 Mini is perfect small phone with lots of features
Background data question
Hi,
I'm planning to buy the Mini Pro but I'm worried about battery life issue.. How does the background data and synchronisation system work on Android? If I want an e-mail and some other apps to be automatically synchronised e.g. once in an hour, does it require data connection to be switched on all the time? If I disable background data from the settings, are all the apps able to turn it on when needed (when it's time fo sync)? Just like it works on Symbian devices.. Only 3G connection will be used in my case, not WiFi..
And how about GPS, do I have to manually turn it on before I launch Google Maps? Or does the Maps turn the GPS on automatically when needed?

After a few days using the Lumia 920 ..............

As a long time android user (since the T-Mobile G1 so about 5 years) i decided to try the Lumia 920 a few days ago and so far i`am loving it, so here are my first thoughts :
- The speed and lagless performance of the OS powered by a dual core cpu instead by a quad- or octocore cpu that is required for android. Clearly the OS and hardware are far better optimized than android. Also i had no reboots or fc`s so far.
- Many specific Nokia apps like Drive that enables navigation without a data connection required as you can download and install maps from the country`s you need.
- Seemless integration and synchronisation with Google and great data/contacts/calender transference when setting up the phone.
- Though there are obviously less apps available than with iOs and android there are many more than i initialy thought and most good and important apps are available. Only Dropbox is limited imo as it doesn`t sync and add automaticaly.
- Great camera and speakers.
- Good call quality.
I didn`t think it was going to be as good as it turned out so far but atm i don`t miss android at all and so i might stick with WP8 for a long(er) while than i anticipated.
Hope the coming update planned for July will bring some more goodies
if any problem with Google sync, simple set Google account via advanced setup
settings - email+accounts - add an account - advanced setup
- add your account info
- select Exchange ActiveSync
- add other data (dont forget to enter full email address for username), for server use m.google.com
- Sign in.... that's all
for calendar's problems look Microsoft advises
http://microsoft-news.com/sync-google-calendar-events-to-windows-calendar-app-via-outlook-com/
P.S.
Also must have app for WP is Store Deals to check latest discounts and occasional free periods for pay apps
Don't know what you mean about seemless integration with Google Calendar. Can't edit it at all. I had to follow Microsoft's tip and subscribe to it via Outlook.com but you can't edit the Google calendar that way as it is read only. Email and contacts are great. Hopefully the update that includes CalDAV support will fix the calendar issues.

If you use Google calendar which i don't changes you make on the regular calender on the phone will sync to the google calendar and vice versa if you change google calendar on the PC. Just use the normal calendar on the phone and it should sync with your other calenders linked through google or hotmail.

Agreed in everything.
worst problem I found in WP8? Whatsapp...not always updating, got the notification but not the message....and we really need a good video player with mp4, avi and srt support.....and a notification center.
Any MS guy ever read this forum?

I don't use it; I use Skype and MetroTalk. Skype's not free but I'm not going to worry about paying on average $60 a year; $5 a month. It doesn't require my universe to have the identical app on the other end.
Quick question...
I really, really, really detest my Xperia S now, like really detest it.
The lagging, god-awful camera, the freezing, everything.
I would try to install a custom Rom, but my Bootlocker unlocked allowed is: no.
I'm really not a high-end user. No interest in games, or intensive apps.
Camera, browsing, travel apps are the main interest for me.
I can get rid of it and pay approx £60-£100 to get the Lumia 920
Would you guys advise it?

I bought the 920 to replace the xperia t I had, best thing I ever did
It's fast, fluid, no freezes or hangups, battery life is great for me, the camera is awesome and I love the wireless charging.
If you can live without the modding and just use your phone for what it is then I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I have been an iPhone user and then a multitude of android phones user (Samsung) before embracing WP8.
My opinion: iPhone is fine if you just want a phone that works - although Apple lost me after the release of the iPhone 4: I was obviously holding it wrong when I wanted to make a call so it mostly wouldn't iOS is simple to use and has lots of apps, but is a walled garden.
Android, while open and extremely customizable, really annoyed me: at first the phones were fine, then became laggy over time. I also found I was frequently rebooting the phones daily. You shouldn't have to install a custom ROM for it to work smoothly. While there are a lot of apps, they are mostly poor quality compared to their iOS counterparts.
So I decided on trying out WP8 around 4 months ago and bought a Lumia 920. First off the build quality is excellent, it's a solid lump of a phone, not tacky plastic feeling like the Samsungs I had. The operating system has NEVER lagged on me...EVER. I only found out a few weeks after I'd had it how to reboot it, and I only did that to find out how to, not that it needed it. Although not nearly as customizable as the androids, I personally got bored doing so with the Samsungs anyway. I love the Live Tiles on the Lumia 920. Again there are nowhere near the amount of apps as iOS or Android, but those there are I find to be as good as iOS apps.
The camera is excellent. So good in fact that when my other half wants pictures taken she asks me to do so - she has an iPhone 5.
At first I was worried by the fact you cannot use a memory card, but honestly I find the 32gb onboard to be plenty - never had to go through and delete stuff to make more room. An added bonus is the wireless charging - I still think it's witchcraft  no idea how or why it works but it does lol
So in summary, yes - I thoroughly recommend the Lumia 920 for your needs: the camera is great, the stock browser is quick and I never had a problem with it and navigation is top notch.
Thanks so much for your replies.
I have had the phone for 4-5 days now and I am absolutely delighted by the decision. Possibly the best hardware change/update I've ever made.
I am finding excuses for taking pictures, such is the quality of the camera, enjoying getting to grips with the new layout and O/S, trying to find decent apps for certain things I used on Android, the main one being the notes app, which was sat on my Android home screen and I used regularly as a 1 click solution to add a note and remind me of things.
Something like that, as a simple live tile would be great, but haven't found such an app yet. (Any you guys suggest?)
I was initially very concerned by the battery life. I took it out with me after an initial charge and found the battery draining away at an alarming rate, even with it in my pocket!
But as I'm sure you're well aware, there's the changes to remedy this;; turning NFC off, location, background apps, getting used to exiting an app with the back button etc.
Great battery life now.
Just ordered a case and I'm one happy bunny!
My god, the Xperia S seems like a distant nightmare now! :victory:
