What is going on?? Changing signal strength manually

So... weird...
Don't know if this does anything at all, but I thought it would be worth mentioning.
So, after putting the code *#*#4636#*#* into my dialer to get the "testing" menu, I looked at Phone Information and saw the following:
Signal strength: -56 dBm 4 asu (which I assume to be the strength of the signal)
and further down:
Set preferred network type: CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto (which I assume to be the network type)
So I then changed the preferred network type to "EvDo only" and, lo and behold, when scrolling up I see:
Signal strength: -120 dBm 4 asu
Changing it to "CDMA only" makes the signal strengh -43 dBm and also makes me unable to do any sort of connectivity.
Can someone please explain? NOTE: I don't have 4G in my area.
info from my stuff in DFW
CDMA Auto (prl) = -96dBm 1asu 3g internet + phone
CDMA only = -96 dBm 2asu (1X 3g slow internet) + phone
EvDo only = -120 dBm 1asu 3G + no phone
CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto = -96dBm 1asu 4Glte +phone
LTE mode = -96dBm 1asu 4Glte +phone
donno if that helps you any but that's what i get out of each setting
cdma+lte lets it switch between 3g and 4g when available. if you dont have 4g, set it to cdma auto. youll max out at 3g and save battery as opposed to it searching and sometimes switching to 4g on the other option. evdo and the cdma i am not so sure about
oh, and obviously lte is 4g only.. i wish...
The different signal strengths are because those are different networks I believe. So the cdma evdo equipment could be different than the 1x tower you're connected to. The transmission power could be much higher or lower than the other.

[Q] H+ icon, what does it mean ?

Hi
I have the Galaxy S2, when I turn on the use packet data and data roaming in the mobile network settings, an icon H+ starts flashing on the top of the display with two little arrows.
1. What does it mean? Is the phone downloading data from the cellular network?
2. What is: packet data and data roaming? What's the difference between the two?
Many Thanks.
Hi,
The icon itself means that you are connected to the data network of your cellular provider.
The icon can look like one of the following:
G - 2nd (or 2.5) generation connection
3G - 3rd generation coonection
H - 3.5 generation connection
H+ - 4th generation connection. This does not mean your provider actually support 4th generation data rates.
When the little arrows are gray - No data is being sent/received. When they are colored it means your phone is sending/receiving data.
Roaming means that you are connected to a "foreign" cellular provider (not the one you are paying to).
Data roaming means that you allow your phone to use data connection when you are roaming.
Using data connection while roaming is extremely expensive and it is highly recommended not to do so.
Hope I got it all covered for you
Data conection
Thank you for clearing this for me.

well I did my digging and got some more accurate figures in addition to the above
G is GPRS 86kbps
E is EDGE 236kbps
3G is UMTS 386kbps
H is HSDPA 3.2Mbps
H+ is HSPA 7.2Mbps
H+ is too for HSPA+ for 14.4Mbps or 21.1Mbps
(noteH and H+ are the so called 3.5G
and the new comer:
4G ( LTE technology) is 100-300 Mbps ( the iphone5 is said to be on 100Mbps)
some phones don't show H or H+ , they just show 3G for UMTS, HSDPA, HSPA, HSPA+
only G or E means it's on 2G, - that is you are not in 3G coverage
PS on my Vodafone, using speedtest.net app i get on H+ 7.12 Mbps... ( aka 0.89 MB/s)
Period

Is there a different icon for DC-HSDPA, or is it 'lumped' into H+?
The standard should theoretically allow up to 84Mbps with MIMO, but my phone only supports up to 42Mbps.
KPN in NL has it rolled out, but I've never been able to confirm if I'm on DC-HSDPA. Using Network Signal Info android app, the fastest I've connected is HSPA+ at 21.6Mbps.
hello seniors, please someone help my phone e120l network not connect to "H" only G/3G connected..how to fix this problem? im already updated to 4.1.2 jelly bean rooted+cwm recovery..
It depends on your area/city/carrier

[Q] Samsung Vibrant SGH-T959 - is this a 4G phone?

Hi
I just bought this device.
I am a noob, and don't know much.
Under info it says "SGH-T959"
I am under the impression that this is the 3G version (and not the 4G).
Am I right about this?
If I am right, and this is the 3G version, than something weird seems to happen: I just installed CynogenMod ROM and I see the "H" sign when surfing. Now isn't this the HSPA sign for TMobil's 4G speed?
So I am confused
Please help
Thanks!!!
Yes, the phone you have is 3G.
If memory serves, the H stands for HSDPA, which is what TMobile uses for 3G. 2G is shown as an E for EDGE. The stock Samsung ROM shows HSDPA as 3G while most custom ROMs change the 3G to an H. It means the same thing, though HSDPA is more correct.
What they should have done is used 2G for Edge and 3G for HSDPA, or E for Edge and H for HSDPA. But really, I'm just nitpicking now.
Thank you !!!!
I believe 3G = UMTS while 3.5G = HSDPA. Vibrant is actually benefiting from HSDPA, but simply is hardware limited to max data rate of 7.2 Mbits/s.

2G / 3G / H / H+ Logos on CM10

On Jelly Bean, the cellular radio states are clearly shown under System Settings, About Phone, Status, Mobile network type.
It would be nice to know when we are operating with a HSDPA category 10 connection just by looking at the Status Bar.
(Status Bar / Mobile network type / complete description / Max download throughput)
2G = EDGE:2
3G = UMTS:3 = HSDPA Category 3 = 1.8 Mbps max
H = HSDPA:8 = HSPA Category 8 = 7.2 Mbps max
H = HSDA:9 = HSPA Category 9 = 10.2 Mbps max
H = HSDA:10 = HSPA Category 10 = 14.4 Mbps max
H+ = HSPAP:15 = HSPA Category 14 = 23.4 Mbps max
Contrary to popular belief, H+ (HSPA Evolution) is not supported on the Atrix 4G.
Can we get better status bar logos on the Atrix to show this giant difference between HSDPA category 8 and category 10?
Good refernece here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-Speed_Downlink_Packet_Access
jjwatmyself said:
Other than CNA, how can we implement the missing H+ logo on the Atrix?
2G = EDGE:2
3G = UMTS:3
H = HSDPA:8
H+ = HSPA:10
The states are clearly shown under System Settings, About, Phone, but it would be nice to know when we are operating in HSPA category 10 (HSPA+) just by looking at the Status Bar.

A themer could do that in two seconds. I recently did it for CSROM Turbo Red. It will also be included in the next version of CSROM (v6.9).
Interestingly, I used to think I got great H+ coverage in my area. But when I changed the icons, I realized I get great 3G coverage and rarely get H+.
AT&T is delusional with it's 3G = H+ = 4G nonsense. I never realized how bad it was until I actually looked at the icon names.

AT&T = delusional :good:
"H+ = 4G = true" This is becasue H+ (HSPA Evolution) support the same very high rates that LTE does
I found a great article that discusses the many technologies. As we all know, HSDPA categroy 10 has a theoretical peak of 14.4 Mbps, which is the highest speed supported on the Atrix (ref: http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_atrix_4g-3708.php).
HSPA+ (HSPA Evolution) is not HSPA Category 10. So HSPA:10 is not HSPA+.
Conclusion: the Atrix 4G is not an HSPA+ device and should not display H+ or 4G on the status bar.
Modifying the icons to show the category of HSPA, wouldn't be a bad thing though.

A great little write up that 'characterizes' category 10 as HSPA+... you can see this is going to get controversal... Technically, the Atrix is not an H+ device. Sales and marketing didn't get that memo.

MOTO E only 2g Signal

I have currently got a moto e xt1023, which has wcdma band 1900, I only get 2g signal, my country network 3g only supports wcdma 2100 since because of this I don't get 3G or H symbol and the internet is very slow,
after a lot of research I found that the modem in my phone doesn't have wcdma 2100 band, I did try using qpst and added wcdma 2100 to nvitem 2100.but still couldn't get the 3g activated.
so finally I tried flashing other moto e version modems, after successful flash I don't get any signal at all, when I checked the nv item in qpst I see only few items available.
