Tmobile/Samsung return possible? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well my phone is bricked (stuck at vibrant screen) AND "Hardware Locked" (cant use button combinations to get to download mode or recovery) after trying to install a kernel that ended up not being for my firmware version..
IF at all possible i would like to be able to get into download or recovery mode but since im hardware locked i dont know how, so if anyone has any suggestions then their are more details in my previous thread.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788189
BUT if i can't possibly restore my phone to working order i would like to get it replaced; now i have heard that you can get a free replacement under manufacturer warranty since it is "Hardware Locked". if anyone know if this is true and/or how to go about doing this, i would be eternally in your debt

When you find out you can't enter download mode via hardware, should have stopped modding there. No offense, I am no help but just saying..

as i had no need to try to enter recovery or download mode through the button combos (i used easier adb) i had no idea that it was locked

Thats too bad, ununbrickable?
if your still in your first 30 days (or whatever it is in ur state) then there shouldnt be a problem. Just dont say too much, and be more carefull next time

That's what I did when Odin bricked me. They replaced it right there in the store. Even the techs on the phone didn't know what was going on with it. It was kind of funny to watch actually.
On a side note, why the hell are we still using Odin to flash when it is capable of bricking so often, when we have a perfectly good means of flashing through Clockwork?? Just saying.

if you have passed the 30 day return..you can still get Tmo to repair it because you have 1 year warranty. just pretend that you don't know a thing and say the other day you turned it on...it just got stuck on the vibrant screen.

I used Odin to flash the JI2 firmware and had no problems; it was only when (like an idiot) i used Clockwork to flash the new OC kernel without reading that its only for the STOCK rom >.<

Thanks alot man ill try tomorow, so no charges or anything? because i had heard that since it is Hardware Locked their will be no charge, is this right?
And yall have all been a great help!

But hey, thanks for helping to drive up the cost of phones by trying to get a replacement due to user error.

the problem is not entirely user error, it is Samsung manufacturing these phones without an accessible recovery/download mode.

just call and pretend you know nothing.

Kies is the devil mate, samsung has made a brick machine here... I only ever use Odin and NOTHING else!!!
If it turns on its not bricked, the only way to possibly rectify this is to actually use kies again;( Try using the emergency recovery flash, if this fails it looks like its an RMA;(((
KIES IS JUST DOWNRIGHT DANGEROUS!
What do you mean by RMA? Kies fails to find any device under emergency recovery... Odin has only gone as far as Factoryfs.img. That's as far as it's ever gone. usually gets stuck at cache, img. really desperate here and not going to sleep...

Well if you can get into download mode, not to fret. When you try and flash through ODIN, if it fails even once you will need to shut down the phone by pressing power button. Then unplug the usb cable, go into download mode and try again. I used to have the problem with my captivate - if it fails once, you need to restart into download mode again otherwise it will keep failing and failing. Most likely not an RMA - I have done this many times. Not on my SGS2 yet but previous sammy phones
If you still have problems, try another USB slot. Then try another PC if absolutely necessary.

Yeah no problem mate. I am not going to say its impossible, but bricking an SGS2 can be fairly difficult. I just wanted to share what I learned about 6 months ago when I thought I bricked my Captivate I kept trying to flash while still in download mode when it just needed to be reset
Oh and my very first post on XDA was the same relief when I found a post that showed me how to fix. lol

Yes the sgs2 works perfectly on the Rogers network. I didn't even have to enter APN settings and hspa+ works too. I bought mine from expansys.ca and altogether was around 800 with taxes and shipping. However I think handtec in the UK is cheaper now. You may have to pay duties but should still be cheaper

Q: eh..uh...help....
Hi! I was doing this guide to do a STOCK ROOM format....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989&page=6
And it all went well i did the step-by-step guide...until Odin showed this "Do not turn of target"... ok so i w8 somewhat 10 mins and it still stood there..i was about to go from my desk to my printer when i accidently pulled the cable off from the computer and so it started...
First of all i dident take out my sim card before i did the procedure!
The phone was still in "Download mode" and i was unable to turn it off.
I opened the back cover to reach the battery and pulled it out and also i took out my sim card (just incase).
Tried to reboot my phone but it wont boot nor does it start to charge with the USB cable inserted in my PC.
My phone is practicly dead now and im kinda got a baad feeling about it...
Does anyone know or does anyone have a fix or solution for this?
Shouldent there be a reset button somewhere inside the phone to do a hard reset?
Note to reader: Ive done the hard and soft reset

Not necessarily.
A similar thing happened to me a while ago during a firmware update using Kies. I was able to use Odin to flash an older version of the firmware then reflash using Kies.
Plenty of guides on here about using Odin to 'unbrick'.

How can i use Odin to unbrick it when i cant get it in download mode ?
Look on eBay for "Samsung Galaxy S2 jig" (minus the ", obviously ). Shouldn't cost more than a couple of bucks. If that doesn't get you in download mode it's either back to Samsung/your telco or....
You could try this guy . I can't vouch for their service, but I have seen a couple of positive reviews on here from memory and they might end up being cheaper/easier than going the Samsung/telco route if they refuse to fix it under warranty.
I have also seen reports/experiences where the local Samsung outfit didn't care the phone had been messed with & fixed it under warranty anyway.
So you've got a couple of options

If I were you I would do whatever I could to get this phone fixed. I had a problem similar to yours mine got stuck in download mode after a failed attempt at rooting using oden. I guess I got lucky though because I pulled the battery and the phone booted right back up with no problems. I would highly suggest keeping this phone it is far better than the Iphone 4s. My bro has it and he is always amazed at the things I can do with my phone that his cant! Not to mention the screen is a whole inch bigger and looks ALLOT better! Also, dont forget the 4s only has 512mb ram and a dual core 800mhz cpu while this beast has 1gig of ram and a 1.2ghz cpu! Thats a total of 800 more mhz for the galaxy! Not to mention allot of custom roms allow you to overclock!
If you want to do some modding, you should order it anyway. jigs are very cheap and you can remove the yellow triangle with it if you switch to a custom kernel. And like others say, force the phone into download mode.
Don't give up yet. You won't regret being a bit patient here ;-)

[Q] Hard bricked?

Hi,
I read and followed lots of excellent threads on here and successfully rooted my S2. I then flashed it with the Revolution ROM which worked fine, later tried the VK + Siyah which also ran fine.
Today I decided to try WajkIUI but after flashing and rebooting, the phone reset, the button lights came on and then it hung. Now I can't get a thing out of it, no booting, no recovery mode and no sign of it in ODIN.
It sounds completely hard-bricked but I don't really understand how it can be.
Any ideas?
Have tried soft and hard resetting but nothing.
Cheers
Without recovery mode your last best (remote) chance before you send it to Samsung would be a jig.
That's what I was thinking but why would it hard brick if the flash had worked?
And if I send if back to Samsung the warranty will be void anyway won't it?
Unfortunately that one's like asking how long a piece of string is (in other words, who knows ?). If it's a case of the NAND being stuffed as a result of the flash, a JTAG repair may fix it, but you won't know that until/unless you send it to a JTAG repairer.
It may be a hardware issue, cpu might have carked it or something.
Yeah, you've pretty much voided the warranty by putting non-stock firmware on it, but at the end of the day if Samsung can't tell it's been messed with you might get away with a warranty repair/replacement.
You'll only know that if you send it in to them to be looked at. So I guess you've got two choices to consider (not including the remote chance of the jig getting you into download mode).
I guess you could try another battery. Always the possibility it might have died.
Crap. Well, I'll give a jig a go and if that doesn't work then send it back and see what happens.
@ op
did you tried the key press combination to get into download mode? the things you have done has a very less possibility of hard brick.
That's what I thought, but no combination seems to work.
Was the battery full when you flashed?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
Think it was about 96%.
You never know, it might just be a completely knackered battery. If you're planning on getting it fixed come what may, spending 20 bucks or whatever they cost in your country on another battery won't be the waste of money you might initially think.
If it doesn't fix this problem, at least you'll have a 2nd battery when you do get it fixed. I know I've found having a 2nd battery a godsend since I got mine a month ago, has come in really handy on trips where I've been away for more than a day and has meant I haven't had to worry bout bringing a charger along.
Could a battery just die like that? Seems a bit of coincidence.
Dunno. Anything's possible I guess. Yeah you're right, that would be coincidence. Given what you were doing when it died, I'm betting the NAND is shot & it will need to be JTAG'd either by Samsung or someone else.

Which sucks. That said, according to a site in the UK it costs about £8 plus postage. Have ordered a USB jig just in case, and for £3 it's worth a go.
The really annoying thing is whether to root again if/when I do get it sorted. Am also checking with my network, see if they'll have a go under warranty and I'll forget to mention I was rooting it.

On that note....if I wanted to upgrade to ICS, how would that be done without rooting - ie. would the counter look the same? (Long shot)
Yeah if you're going to get it fixed, chances are you'll end up flashing/rooting it again, so the jig will come in handy.
I guess that's something you'll need to decide when you get it back/get a new one. What happened to you isn't the norm tho. The large majority of flashes go smoothly for most people. But the reality is, every time you do it, you do run that small risk of it barfing for any number of a gazillion reasons (which are normally impossible to discover once it's happened). That's the risk people like us who frequent sites like this take.
Yeah if they/Samsung can't tell what happened to it, you'll possibly get away with it. And the fact you rooted it isn't information you have to volunteer to them by any means As to exactly what you should tell them, that's up to you.
Edit to add - Let us know how you get on once you have it sorted. Always useful to have people's experiences on here to give other people it happens to some kind of idea of how it might go down.

Well, according to the boffins online I have to go into a store to see if they can repair it. Hopefully they won't be able to check whether it's been rooted or not instore. In fact, if they can't power it on, I don't see how they could.
Random technical question: how can a software/firmware fault stop the hardware from even starting?
My only reference is building a PC - even if you knacker the BIOS and the harddrive, it will still power on so you can access them to put them right.

Firmware includes the boot sequence and recovery sequence on Android .
power goes to boot on file in effect
Or key combination goes to load recovery or download .
jje
Is that a bit of a flaw, for circumstances just like this?
And, does this mean that the USB jig has no chance of working - or is that the exact reason it might work?

[Q] Hard Bricked S3 i9300

After Flashing Latest CM10.1 to my S3 and using it for a while, I wanted to go back to stock. I flashed stock 4.1.2, rooted it and installed CWM successfully. After a while I noticed that CWM can not mount internal SD card, or recover a nandroid backup from it. I thought it is a partition issue, so i have decided to flash GT-I9300_mx_20120220.pit to my S3 with re-paration checked. ODIN started the process, Pass appeared with green background. Since then, the device wont start in any mode. I tried every key combination with no luck. Tried to connect the device to pc, same result; device is dead. Pulling battery also did not work.Anything I can do to turn on the device in to download mode at least? Please help me. I am from Lebanon; here all the phones are sold with no warranty, so returning it to Samsung wont solve the problem? any solution? Thank you.

90% of phones in Lebanon are sold through unauthorized sellers. If you want to buy it from Samsung agent here, you will end up paying $200 more. Bought my phone for $520, while it costs around $700 from authorized seller.
Is either that or a $200 + mobo replacement.

[Q] Phone won't boot, enter Recovery Mode, nor connect to PC - what do?

I followed a root-guide a couple of weeks ago and my phone worked perfectly.
I have no memory of what ROM I used, nor do I remember if I flashed a Kernel or not. I'm pretty new at this.
Now, today, my phone sent a notification that a new firmware update was available. Stupid as I am I just press "install" right away. Not much later my phone tried to reboot and suddenly was stuck at the Samsung logo screen. I tried pulling out the battery to reboot and it still wouldn't work. If I connected it to my PC it shows a battery but the spinning arrow-thingy is frozen.
After searching these forums and other places I found several guides on how to fix stuff like this, by either flashing with a new kernel - or rom or w/e I don't know - or going into recovery mode and do something funky. The problem is that I can't reach recovery mode at all, and when I enter download mode it's just frozen at "Downloading..." and I can't get it to connect to my PC at all (tried both with and without Kies). In Odin the ID:COM cells won't update when I connect my phone.
Do you guys have any idea how to resolve this? Do I have to take it to a service centre?
Edit: The phone is out of battery, suddenly, apparently, so I tried to charge it, but that doesn't work either. What the **** has happened to my phone? Please help if you can!

*shameful bump*
As I have no chance of replacing this phone (because I'm pretty much broke) I really need to fix this on my own if I can. Last resort is borrowing money to send it to service.
If you have any suggestions or theories PLEASE reply ASAP. I will truly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance
So Atm what does your phone do? Can you get to download mode? Vol-home and power does it go into that?
Buy a new motherboard. And with your memory, why not borrow the money lol.

maybe your an iphone expert
------------------------------------------
I also stupidly pressed one of those "install update" stuff. Then i had the same symptoms until i removed the battery, then it wouldn't turn on - so i suspected hardbrick.
Lucky enough my warranty still had a month letf and they apparently didn't notice that i had rooted my device and thus vioded my warranty.
Are you sure all Kies' background tasks were closed?
Do you have access to a JIG?
There's anotehr way to get into download mode (other than vol down+power+home) i'll see if i can find it.
If it hardbricks maybe you also can make up a story and give it to them? (just a suggestion, nothing i can say but just mentioning since it worked for me)

Are you sure all Kies' background tasks were closed?
Do you have access to a JIG?
There's anotehr way to get into download mode (other than vol down+power+home) i'll see if i can find it.

Yep, I even tried with a 100% uninstall and removal of it; still didn't work. No I do not, but I've considered buying one on ebay - they're like $1 with free shipping from China.

If it hardbricks maybe you also can make up a story and give it to them? (just a suggestion, nothing i can say but just mentioning since it worked for me)

It has most definitely hardbricked. I've considered this: Go down there, act dumb, say after installing the firmware update my phone wouldn't boot and a yellow triangle suddenly appeared out of nowhere, or something like that.
I've only had this phone for half a year so I really wanna fix this if possible!
Thanks a lot for the feedback - please reply with more if you've got some suggestions/recommendations/tips/solutions!

Hey zCourage ,
Maybe you should try another USB jig.... have you tried it yet?

Like just another cable or a "modified jig"? I've tried 3 different USBs and 2 chargers none of them worked. I do not have access to a "modified jig", yet. I will try to order one on eBay
Of course this is a drivers thing, you need your pc to see the device.
We got a couple of threads about that.

Oh so you don't think I've googled for hours to find solutions for this problem? Think again. Every "solution" i read is either take out the battery, enter recovery mode or use an USB jig. 2 of them don't work and the third is at the moment not possible as I don't have a jig.
No need to be rude.

You don't think I have? I'm not retarded. The phone is 100% hardbricked.
Buy a new mobo then.

you need to change your motherboard.
