[Q] SIM Card Question - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, just a quick question because I have been a CDMA user for a long time now and don't have any experience with GSM phones. Is it possible to use a T-Mobile prepaid SIM card in an unlocked HD2 and not have to carry a contract. And if so, what all needs to be unlocked, the phone and SIM or is it an all in one deal?
Thanks,

An unlocked phone could work with any sim carrier ever.
For unlocking, u could buy the unlock code from any unlocking service on the net

Thank you for the response.

3g sim card

hi guys does anybody know if it is possible to get my o2 xdmini s to except a 3 sim card, it excepts all other sim cards (virgin - vodafone) etc
thanks, jim
Think the simple answer is no.
My understanding is that three use a different frequency and specification - ie wideband CDMA for their mobile coverage, which is not compatible with sims from other carriers using gsm and/or 3gsm services.
If you correctly use the word "accept" instead of "except" in your future posts it will be much easier for people to help you.
one thing that i know is that it will work but no 3g

how? i sim unlocked my G4 mini s. It works with o2, vodafone and should be fine with orange.
But I did check to use my 3 simcard. However, it doesn't accept the card at all. (not only can't use 3G, but no phone feature is available to use)

Q: How do I know my G4 has ever been CID unlocked?

Try SIM Unlocking again. A 3G sim means that it's capable of 3G speeds in a 3G device. I'm currently using a 3G sim in a non 3G device and all is good.
If you didn't CID unlock your device yourself....more than likely it's still CID locked. G4's were only able to be CID unlocked by imei.com or something like that till now. There's a new CID unlocking tool floating around that works on G4's. Give it a try.

Thanks for the reply. But i thought the 3 networks and other networks are working completely different.
I have a sim-free phone. I can use O2, Orange, Vodafone, T-mobile, etc. But when I put my 3 sim-card in. It doesn't allow me to use it. I don't care the 3G speeds. It will be fine to me if I can use the 3 sim card to make a phone call.
The same situation for my Wizzard (O2 Mini S).

My Wizzard is Sim Unlocked, CID locked. I can use my regular sim cards, like O2, Vodafone, etc.
But why can't I use my 3g sim card to make any call? Any idea about this will be appreciated.
i believe the wizard phones arent made for 3g. so thats probably why your
3g sim wont work.
i emailed imei-check.co.uk and this was the reply
"This is TECHNICAL IMPOSSIBLE. Your device is a 2G device and can handle all GSM SIM cards.
"3" (3G network) does not have GSM SIM cards. They use special U-SIM cards (note the U in front) which are NOT GSM compatible.
In short: To use a "3" sim card you need a 3G/UMTS device which can handle U-SIM cards. Your device is NOT a 3G/UMTS device and thats why it will NEVER be able to use a U-SIM."
that sucks ive got 12 months left of my contract

Exactly, I have 17 and a half months left for my 3 contract.
But the guy "ultraprimeomega" above mentioned, he could use the 3 simcard as well as other simcards. It's very strange to me

[Q] is the Photon locked or unlocked by default?

Hi,
I'm kind of confused regarding the term locked/unlocked.
When I talked to Sprint, they told me that you can take the Motorola Photon to other countries (that use GSM), and simply buy a local SIM card. It's "unlocked", so you're free to use other SIM cards. BUT, she also said that in USA, the Photon has to use Sprint CDMA network. Was she just saying that to dissuade me from trying another US carrier on GSM?
So, is the Photon locked or unlocked?
On some other threads here (like this one), some of you refer to "unlocked bootloader". This is different than an "unlocked SIM card", which was what I was thinking of, right?
Are there other references to "unlocked" things that aren't related to SIM cards?
Thanks!
It does have an international unlocked Sim slot but the radio software is written to ignore USA gsm networks.so it will not work on another carrier here unless you unlock the bootloader and someone figures out how to rewrite the radio software, which they haven't yet.

Thanks for the response.
Another noob question. Rooting is different than simply unlocking a phone right? Or are the two terms used for the same thing? Rooting a phone gives you admin rights to install software that require higher levels of user access?
Where as unlocking (in this case) implies unlocking the SIM card to allow other GSM networks, or unlocking the radio to allow other US GSM networks?
That is, you can unlock some smartphones (allowing global SIM card use), but not have the phone rooted (not have admin rights)?
Unlocked has nothing to do with the sim card in our case. The sim slot is and always was unlocked from the start. Unlocked refers to basically the phones equivalent to a BIOS which allows us to rip out the os and install a new one aka custom Rom.

While the sim is unlocked it still won't work on US domestic gsm towers as the radio specifically blocks those regardless of sim lock/ unlock.

[Q] Got htc radar unlocked but wont read t-mobile sim card

My girlfriend bought a T-mobile HTC radar off craigslist and It wouldn't read a T-mobile sim card. Which I though was weird. So I bought a unlocked code and unlocked it with my AT&T sim card. The phone will work with the AT&T sim card but not with a t-mobile sim card. I've try a contract and pre-paid T-mobile sim and nothing. I went to T-mobile and got a brand new sim card and still nothing. Like I said if I put my AT&T sim in the phone it work fine. Can some one please help me to get this phone to read a t-mobile sim. I though once you unlocked it you could use any carrier that use a sim card.
you'll have to call t-mobile to activate it with the sim card

I don't think so. I regularly bounce between T-Mobile and AT&T with all my unlocked phones. The only limiting factor is the radio and the data bands that it receives. And, of course the Radar was made for T-Mo. Mine has always been great there.
Now, there are two versions of the phone. The US version is simply called the Radar and can use either T-Mobile or AT&T's networks. The international version is model C110E and called either the Radar or the Omega. It will work on AT&T, but it does not have the T-Mobile bands. It is made for data networks in Europe and it additional bands for Asia. The antenna configuration is different in the two phones.
Does your Radar say "T-Mobile" in the top right corner? Is it possible that you have the C110E?
I got a unlocked code and it works on my at&t sim card but not a T-Mobile one. I've try contact and prepaid sim cards. Nothing! I got a new sim card and nothing! It a T-Mobile HTC radar. It should work on T-Mobile but it don't. A Friend of mine said T-Mobile has lock the phone from there end. I got the unlocked code and it works with at&t sim but not T-Mobile. I don't like the windows one. I've unlocked 3 mytouch, 4 SGII and a galaxy note. This has been a pain in the ass from day one. If u think of a idea let me know it won't hurt.

Maybe the IMEI has been blocked by Tmo? Call and find out.

[Q] Sim unlocking

Has anyone used a payed service to SIM unlock there AT&T M8, and if so, which one? I want to get my phone unlocked in case I decide to switch carriers but have had no luck getting it unlocked yet.

Question Carrier phones?

Will it be possible to root an AT&t variant? The OEM unlocking is grayed out so that it cannot be switched, but I've seen instances in the past such as the Verizon model I had a few years ago but still possible to achieve root.
You need to have the service provider SIM card unlock the phone first. If you are on an installment/monthly payment plan it can be harder to convince the provider to unlock the phone, but it is possible. Once the phone is SIM card unlocked, the OEM Unlocking option will be available in settings.
Of course this is on a non-Verizon version. Usually the Verizon versions will have the OEM Unlocking option greyed out even if the phone is SIM card unlocked. (But there have been models that Verizon didn't OEM lock, so we really won't know for sure until we hear from some Verizon customers).

call their customer support, ask if the bootloader can be unlock once you paid off the phone, if thats the case I think you can root.
