[BRAINSTORM] [IDEA] Cyanogenmod Universal Improvements - Nexus One Android Development

In an attempt at obfuscation I thought I'd start a thread in hopes of getting some collaboration for improving my favorite Android ROM-- CM6. Sure I could stick with AOSP for better universal support but who cares? CM6 offers what I consider the best experience and the available code far surpasses what we would need to reinvent on a stock base.
Lack of time and knowledge has me realizing it's best to try to bring the community together so we can work on adding features in a hopefully less 'throm' way. Seeing advancements devs can do like MIUI's lockscreen and interesting home screen improvements, features we enjoy from the CM6 nightlies, etc. is the motivation.
I'll post my work and ideas and I'm hoping people do the same.
List of ideas and projects I'd like to get going:
Notification bar scrollable settings
MIUI and the new Sense inspired idea but taken to a new level with custom activity support similar to Bettercut and ADW offer.

Universal Firefox-style Google search from long-pressing text
Long press text in a web page, email, text box and have a context menu to search the phrase on Google similar to Firefox. It's a Google OS, let's add it
Smooth screen rotation transitition
Intercept rotation and instead shift the screen rotation without redrawing to improve speed on low end devices and prevent onResume() potentially wiping current saved state in poorly coded apps
This is a think tank and I hope to spin it into a development thread. I'm open to ideas like a Home button in browser, etc. Let's make this easy, open source and available for integration in ROMs to make things better for everyone.

I really don't need to reserve this one but you're welcome

This thread already looks awesome.
Here's an idea: SORRY FOR RAPING YOUR THREAD

Well, it ain't there in MY settings. Maybe because I'm SORRY FOR RAPING YOUR THREAD?

Also the MIUI messaging, omg that messaging is so far better then the stock android messaging app. Maybe im overdoing it but it is eye candy

Tweeting and asking devs personally takes you so far. I'd like a 'consortium' of elitest ideas and source code that can help us get this going. The best phones (ours) win so we might as well kill the competition

gibe sense widgets on cm6 pl0x?
/end troll

The one thing I've always wanted fixed in Android (since 1.0) is Artist sorting in the music player. Currently the scanner incorrectly uses the Artist tags for combination albums and splits them all up (should use Album Artist; check how iTunes/WMP sorts this stuff); its terribly annoying and has needed to be fixed for ages.

One of those is coming soon ...

You're just a big tease

My 2 Cents
Sense like copy /paste In browser
Getting that search drop down on xda to not dissapear when I try to type in eing
Getting the gmail app to auto call phone numbers when you touch it, sense does this
When searching In google, the suggestions come up, I would like to be able to scroll to one of the suggestions, and this auto fills the search box for you, like it does in a desktop browser
Cm has thought of almost everything I must say though!

Here's an idea i'd like to see. I dunno if it should be implemented in Android in general or CM.
If you pull down the notification bar, swiping left or right to get another page with some of your widgets... OR switch between open applications using that.

On the lock screen an option to show currently playing artist and song would b nice

Any who to be short and save myself from tossing this computer I've been talking with the Dev of Handcent [it's a sms/mms application] about making an experimental new build with a new UI.
I like using handcent because it shows the users photo next to there name and sub text underneath it from the last message sent.
And my idea for a new UI falls along the lines of the dev of Buka and Totem? And recently Radiant. At the home screen it has a gallery button and it has a sliding UI similar to the Ipod touch album chooser and HTC Hero's Album chooser as well.
What the Idea is it to make the contact photo like the album, and then place the users text underneath it.
I drew my own crude version of it below, [this is why I'm asking if you're good at photo shop, I clearly don't have the first hint on using it.] and I'll include the Ipod touch's UI

}
And just for some talk back what do you guys thing about this idea?
I personally see it like this:
Slide to select the users photo, then when it's set and locked on the user text falls down in an animated way then piles up correctly like the threaded text does.
Then to view someone else you'd select the photo and here is where my idea splits.
I'm not too sure if I'd like the screen to rotate in a 3d square like motion or just slide like the album covers.
Of course I know there's plenty work to be had about this and it would take a lot of CPU and for good contact photos it would have to be a place in handcent to assign them and not based off of the Google image you have since that can only be blown up and that makes it blurry.
And of course I am not a dev at all!
So if you'd like to make this image I'd appreciate it :]
And mind you the proportions of portrait and landscape.
And so far here is the work of some friends and forum people that have helped me along with this idea.
From "Konzern" Over at Android Community dot com.
And our latest submitted images :]

well you made me smile. lol but i think that would be a really nice ui. hope to see it up here on the forums sometime soon!

I think thats actually a pretty cool idea for a messaging UI. I'll try to draft something up as well but one thing I would like to point out in the development of this is to also have an option for list selection. While this is cool for one or two conversations, if you have to scroll through many it "could" be annoying depending on how smooth the sliding between photos goes. Awesome idea anyway. I cant wait to see it.
I'm lovin the drawing. You should just use that

Well now that I have more time to type.
In my orginal email to the dev I also throgh that in as well.
I thought about it like how Google maps has the list selection at the bottom left corner.
But overall I think we all could be productive here and help the dev with a guideline of how we see it and be supportive :]
Or maybe he'll read here and pick and choose.
i removed the app tab because i realized its not supposed to be there lol
Here is my mock-up. I chose to do it in like the hand-drawn example above, with chat-room style texts instead of bubbles.

I emailed handcent and they replied
"Hello,thanks for your suggestion,the new UI example is cool and something same as i think (but no implement ), i will let ui design view the thread first and add it to develop plan"
So don't run around expecting it, but it definitely could happen.
Am just pending on the OP of the image to give me some info so I can give him more credit.

all i have to say to that is... damn that looks amazing... i still thought the paper ui was a good one though, and that font man, that font.
but for real hettbeans, that is amazing and i would use whichever app implements that idea.
also to the ones designing this, you should pm or somehow alert rvg151 (the guy with the modded mms.apk) to this thread, and see if he can incorporate something like this into the standard mms.apk. that would be killer.

Well aside from getting that particular dev to do this, why not start an XDA project to see if any devs are interested in implementing that UI on a new sms app. It doesn't seem like the UI will see the light of day unless someone makes it happen. I gotta admit, its a shame since I do like the mockup UI created by hettbeans even though I'm not really a fan of iphone-esque design of coverflow.

Both of you guys, go download the Buka game demo and go to that gallery option and tell me if that can be implemented/was made for a messaging app you wouldn't want it lol.
I don't like the Iphone style either but when I saw it in that game and the color scheme I thought of Handcent and how awesome it would be.

I'm a big fan of UI uniformity. I think the proper thing to do would just be a row of side-scrolling thumbnils like what the Market used to have.

[DEV] Lock Screen - Source/Info Req

So,
Here's the deal:
I am a very capable java programmer, who wants to change some things about his N1. I don't care if the program I create can only be used for people who have root, (and for free).
Currently I have the N1 rooted, and am running Cyanogen's 5.0.5.2
My goal is to change the default lockscreen to include the following:
- SMS/Email display
- Upcoming Appointment
- Music control
All I need is the following:
- Where is the source code for the original located.
- Where is the apk installed that handles the current default lockscreen.
- How do I compile the source into apk so it can replace the default lockscreen.
Btw, you'll probably hear a lot more from me the coming months as I'm bringing a whole team of 'bout 20 programmers to the Android. ;-)
(We're from a university study, specialized in Artificial Intelligence. And our goal is to make (good) games.)
Any help, tips or requests would be really appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

This is a great idea. The thing I'd like to see added to the lock screen most would be the info on the current song playing in the Android music player (Artist, Album, Track title). No more swiping the screen to get into the player - just hit the trackball or power button to activate the screen to see what you are listening to.
Anyway, I wish you success.

Thanks, but since this is an Android forum, I figured it was clear I was looking for an Android solution...
When I had my HTC Touch Pro, I used S2U2 as well as A_C's great S2P and S2V apps and donated several times. I finally got tired of waiting for WM to play catchup with the rest of the mobile community, switched to Android and haven't looked back!

A pretty cool launcher idea, me thinks. Tower launcher.

Alright, so I did this mock-up to explain:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
This is my idea of a pretty neat launcher. Let me explain.
It's a giant launcher where everything is made up of "panels" which is essentially what a widget would be normally, except instead of small icons and widgets making up a grid, you would rather make up this entire tower of "panels" you can scroll through like so:
Once you reach the bottom (like so), you have the option of adding or entering edit mode in which you can change the placement of panels, configure panels, or add more. Also notice the stationary panels at the top and bottom. I figure the top would could be configurable to look however you like or replaced with another replacement panel made for staying at the top at all times. (i.e. you can't replace it with a Last.FM panel, you would have to go about finding a panel that is absolutely meant to be at the top.)
I figure this could also be a pretty accessible thing for everyone in terms of making new panels. Someone would release the base panel code, and then people can configure it to do some pretty neat things, I figure.
I dunno, this just seemed kind of cool in my opinion. I can think of all sorts of panels and stuff like that too - a Favorites/Folder panel, gallery panel, music panel... etc.
Also, I threw this mock-up together pretty fast. I figure the Facebook and Twitter panels would have more to it, heh.
So whatcha think?
EDIT: On a side note, what I was imagining isn't really widget status where you can interact with it so much - you click on it or the link or whatever corresponds with whatever (i.e. you click on a tweet) and it brings you to where you need in order to comment on it or like it through FB and what not.
Hey man, first off, u may want to request this moved to the Apps section. I see the dev side of it but ppl around here get very picky about what should go where. Second, cool idea, im not much one for these kinds of home screens but some ppl like them and the more kinds out there the better.
You may want to check out slide screen from larva labs. sounds very similar.
I believe this is what WP7 is trying to achieve but failing short of it....
Your concept is wonderful (not exactly original because of WP7), but I still like it. To do this you will need some mad skillz with Java and change up the framework and re-organize the notifications/alerts/alarm aspects of the it.
Also the facebook/twitter integration will need to know how to communicate with each respective API.
yeah, this is going in themes & apps.
In the other thread I mentioned that uh, I'm not a developer for anything, let alone Android. I just threw this mock-up out there just as an idea.

The only problem I see is that a lot of widgets would need to be reinvented to fit the new panel system. I don't want to do what the W7 Launcher did and just place the widget in the middle of a box 'cause that... That doesn't look good.
Here's some ideas for panels I pulled out of my brain:

Unless maybe there was a way to remove the background of the widget or force fonts onto widgets, but then again I know nothing regarding the difficulty of this so... Yeah.
But then again, there could be like master panels that have the ability to be set to whatever music program you want from there.
That would minimize the amount of panels that needs to be made. A friends panel = Twitter, Facebook, etc. A music panel (Like Phantom Music Widget) = a lot of music apps. And then maybe a widget panel where if you configure it you can have it attempt to remove the background of the widget so it looks somewhat right on the panel. I dunno.
I dunno man but you have everyone dying to have this made haha

New google mobile search ui?

Okay so recently i noticed a change in the UI of google web mobile search. This only happened to me twice. The previous time i noticed it, but did not take much interest. I then Googled if such a UI change was implemented. Turns out there was no news or information on a new UI change. Now that i've chanced upon it a second time, i decided to take some pictures and ask around if anyone else has seen it or have any ideas how to enable such a UI because i like this UI better than the one i see everyday...
Take a look at the images... The top portion has changed to be much much simpler.
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
This is the current UI version i see everyday. When pressing on the << arrow beside the search box, options such as web, images, maps, videos, news, shopping, more and show search tools will slide out. If you pressed the more button at the top right, a menu of google web applications will slide down. I feel that the slide out animations are choppy and the whole current interface is ugly. How about you? Do you see this everyday too?
On the bottom of the new interface, nothing much has changed, other than the image of the search button...
If you click the more at the side, a whole long scrollable list of options will show itself. This scrolling is smooth and not laggy. The whole search seems to be faster too, but it could be because i'm using Dolphin beta instead of the other browsers.
When clicking on the toolbar...
To note: I chanced upon this new UI. I have no way of replicating the same UI everytime i use google search. It just appeared to me twice on random occasions. Now, when i load new google search pages, i will get back the old UI... Anybody know how to enable this new UI? I think it's really clean and neat and i like it over the old one...
Wait, after furthur testing, i realise i can access this new UI in dolphin beta browser ONLY and i must not be logged in to google. I'm sure it'll be gone by tomorrow though. I cannot do the same in chrome or normal browser, whether logged in or not...
P.S. Please don't laugh at what i was searching about. I wasn't literally searching on how to be a better man. I was just trying to recall a website i had forgotten that had an article titled 'Be a better man in 30 days' on artofmanliness.com xD
Nice spot, bringing it more inline with the main sites design and Google Now.
Just had a look back over some blog posts and it was actually mentioned at the time of the Jelly Bean announcement. The Google Nowand rthe Knowledge Graph seemed to have stole the like lite of the UI overall. Though it is understandable that bitwould be brought in line with the rrest of their products. Let's hope it will roll out properly soon
I see..... cool! Haha i had hoped it hadnt been announced yet, so it would seem like i luckily chanced into some early access on a new google design xD but it was already announced. Yeah i wasn't able to find any news articles about a ui change, other than the google now and knowledge graph stuff... i do hope it will rollout asap, its quite the change, being neater and faster.
Thanks

[CHALLENGE] Person Of Interest Mesh Phone Theme...

I didn't know where to post this, so here goes...
I am a huge fan of the show "Person of Interest" and I've been looking for a theme for my phone that makes it look like the mesh phones from season 4. Unfortunately, I cannot find anything even remotely like that out there!
So here is my theme Challenge: use screenshots from season 4 of the show, starting with the episode "Panopticon" and create a homescreen series (3-5 screens) that are visually similar/identical to the ones seen in the show.
Good Luck!
Here are some images to get you started:

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
NOTE: Finding actual shots of the phones from the show is next to impossible, so you'll probably have to watch the episodes to get a better look. I've included what I can below... In addition, there are a dialer, and a general purpose screen, which could be used for a music player, or a weather forecast section.

The resource files I just grabbed from various places across the web, because they most resembled the icons and indicators from the show. And sorry, but I don't have a gdrive of the resources to share. The thumbnails of the device from the show I screencapped myself, so you're free to use them. I captured them from the episode "Panopticon"
Also, feel free to use the attached images, I grabbed them off royalty-free sites.
And Thank You very much for taking an interest! I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
Inspiration...
Looks like another person started on this, but never finished:

Hopefully you all can use this as inspiration to get this thing up and running!

Thanks for the flattering, I've created that theme long ago and I kept it mostly for myself for over a year. It was really not that difficult to make, moslty is a background image, some Zooper Widgets and an icon text app that i downloaded for free from the PlayStore. To prove that I'm the creator of it I'll give it free to everyone here:

If you like it and you started using it, please share a photo of it to me via tweeter (@Fre4k4zoid) !
So I made a theme based on those pictures only to find out I can't post links here because I'm new (Always been a lurker). Made another theme and figured I'd take a shot at this since it's been sitting here for so damn long.

Go there to check it out. I Might add some more to it later. Right now the center button just opens the app drawer, but would like it to go to a second themer screen with some app categories. Maybe if people like it.
