GPS FIX! - Fascinate Android Development

If you gps isnt accurate, or takes forever to lock on, or is just not working
goto
settings--->Location & security---> uncheck vzw location services
try to use Standalone GPS services by itself, if not use Standalone and Google. just make sure the vzw one is off.
I tested with some people and it worked for them too.

WoW.... it really works... Just confirmed it myself. I am rooted, I did NOT do lagfix and updated to DI01

confirmed worked. it took 2 sec and was almost 100% accurate. with all 3 checked it was hit and miss and when it did find me it wasnt accurate and it took anywhere from 3-5 min to find me and it was usually about 1-2 football fields away,, still on old software, no update for me yet and no root
nice find

I have had that unchecked since the phone came out and still had problems. If there was any fix it was from the update.

unchecked... no difference, lock time is still measured around 1-2 mins.

didn't work for me...

Worked great for me. I was getting fed up waiting on the damn thing to lock onto me while I was driving and needed to find a place quick and directions. Thanks for the heads up.

I checked all 3 after reading about it somewhere then my gps started working with no problem with google maps and I live in nyc.
I think the result varies.

Take it in to verizon and show them... They will give you a new phone.

So are you guys getting GPS locks in a matter of seconds all the time, even after reboot? Mine takes a few minutes all the time to get a lock, or else is very inaccurate. If I wait for the lock I get accurate to within feet, and it'll stay that way.

Well, I thought that worked for me until I rebooted my phone to see if it really worked. No dice.
From what I understand (and I could be wrong) essentially what you are doing is turning off the cell phone triangulation that google/verizon provide and sticking with just the straight GPS unit. I don't necessary see why turning off the "rough location" would effect the warm up time of the GPS unit, but maybe it actually does.
Just didn't work on mine after my GPS unit was cold.

Does anyone know if this is a hardware issue or software?
Browsing multiple forums brings up slews of the same complaints, but no one has put forth any kind of solution, nor has Samsung.

I have all location services enabled, and I get locks virtually instantly almost all the time, and it's always accurate to within probably a few feet. Maybe I'm just lucky?

I'd hate to say it, but I fear it is hardware, seeing as I have yet to have a lock take more than 10 seconds, usually 4 or less.
This is really the first time I've been on the good side of a widespread issue.

Yeah all of these "fixes" are merely temporary. All they are doing in storing the satelite info so they ock faster. If you reboot and turn off GPS for more than a few minutes it will start all over again. I will be paying VZW a visit tomorrow to see what they will do about since it seems not all phones are affected by this.
And I use my GPS a lot. The other day I was trying to find backway home and my GPS was so far off by the time it locked I was already stuck in traffic, had it locked normally, I would have been home free, my Droid1 would have never done this to me!!

I've only had issues with getting a lock after the GPS hasn't been used for a while. Lately, I've been wondering if some people who don't have issues have some type of app installed that periodically queries GPS? For example, I just installed the Asurion app that is supposed to check my location every hour. I haven't fully tested it yet, but now I'm wondering if this will keep GPS on frequently enough to the point where it won't have to re-start with the delay.
BTW... in early testing (when I first got the phone), I would wait to get a lock (maybe a minute), then after I got a lock I rebooted the phone and I still got an instant lock. So, once a lock is obtained, it seems like it keeps it for a while - even after a reboot. The main times I've had issues have been in the morning after the phone has been charging all night while asleep.

Yeah, I have a fascinate and so does my girlfriend. Locks both take minutes at the very least.
If this is hardware or if anyone has some legit theories, I'd like to know before my 30 days is up so I can de-root mine and exchange them both for phones that actually get a lock in a decent amount of time.

sorry man I have no idea. my device still gets locks but I always have to toggle location on settings. (go in and turn it to 911 only say ok till I am back to the main screen then go abck and turn it on and say ok till I am back at the main screen again) then soft reset. it takes me a while now to gets locks but I do get them (no2chem5066 with radio 3.42.50)

have you updated your phone via *228? llboredll spoke about how me might of found some issues when programing his phone after verizon released the software update.
I had some serous issues trying to get a fix yesterday but just now I walked out my basement and got 7 sats and lock within 15 secs or better. So I will have to chalk it up to some weird anomaly yesterday.
guys thanks for the quick response, ya il try resting my "location" setting and yes i did do a *228' 2 ealyer today trying to fix the issue, it didn't change my PRI.

Try a GPS program that displays the NMEA messages like GeoScout. If you don't see any then your GPS is not turning on. So either flash the ROMs again or you have a back GPS possible.
I wish you guys would read the damn forums.

Read the first post, he didn't (repeat) didn't update his phone. His theory is that Verizon did something to the network to work only with the update such that us on Custom ROMs it will not work. Obviously that is not the case but that is what he was asking or theorizing about.
I think we all have read the forums on it and are tired of people updating their phones and then complaining on this forum that it screwed up their phone. I can only say "Do your homework before flashing anything" otherwise don't whine about what you have now.
so you think it may be more along the lines of software??
give me your top 3 pics and ill try them all out.
Thanks a lot, and yes I was theorizing it was a network issue not my phone its self. seeing if anyone else may have had a issue recently with it.
Fixed it, uninstalled GPS Today
Installed GPS Toggle, and got locks 30 secs after i turned it on, thanks for leading me in the right direction!
I even get locks in my Room witch did not happen before. so defiantly awesome!

I would suggest you just go ahead and have VZW replace it, sounds like it could be a hardware problem. Can we unroot the TB yet? Don't know myself. Things like this are one of the reasons I have not rooted yet.

I noticed when i got mine it wouldnt aquire satelites fast or at all when i was trying with google maps. Then i downloaded gps status off the market and it seems to be working as intended now. Not sure what it was but now it works without a hitch.
Been using a custom ROM and I wasn't able to get my GPS working with 4G service turned off. As soon as I turned 3G back on, my GPS started to work again.
Could be pure coincidence, but who knows.
It has been suggested that GPS will lock on quick if you have all three location settings checked. I had unchecked VZW and Google and left stand alone GPS checked. In Google Maps, I could not get my location. Other GPS apps (like C:Geo) would lock on. I went back in and clicked VZW and Google locator services and the GPS locks on quick in all apps.
I have all 3 GPS systems on and it stays on searching for GPS.
im gonna revert it to stock and return to VZW for a new one.
edit: it just found me and is now working... still returning it to vzw for a new one though
I had the same issue, no rhyme or reason. Flashed stock and it's working again. It might have something to do with CWR thats causing it, although I'm no dev and it's just an educated guess.

issue was i only use GPS once a mouth so the "agps" gets out of date and google maps sucks at updating it or something.
havent had the TB long enough to say if this helps there but on the OG droids it worked great
Verizon Level 2 Tech Support Said...
So, sadly, I've noticed the same issue with GPS not locking on. I grabbed the GPS Status app and it shows compass data, but keeps spinning when it comes to GPS data....10-15 minutes and NOTHING there. Settings > Location > VZW, Standalone and Google location services are all checked.
The best happened this morning - Google Maps had me in a 2 mile diameter space about five miles from where I was. Reboot got me back to a 200 meter radius including my actual location, but then POOF - magically started creeping back to its original place five miles away.
All this was going on during a call to Verizon tech support. I wasn't using my TB for the call - calling through Gmail (loving that, btw). Level 1 rep had no clue (script reader to a T) and so got bumped up to talk to Sergio in Level 2. Guy told me this and I think it's nonsense. Wondering if you guys have thoughts.
He said that he lives in Albuquerque and has tried GPS on Verizon devices including the Droid X, Droid2 and the TB in LA, Denver, Tucson and other cities and says that in cities it has never locked on to his location while standing. While mobile, he says it does. I said, "I don't buy it as being the reason for my issue, Sergio" and the guy has the bravado to fire back "well, I don't need you to buy it, it's a fact.".
Guy was kind of a **** from that point on, but said he would say try a master reset. Should I head that direction? Does this smell like HW more than SW? If it smells like SW, I might as well root wait for the disgustingly talented XDA crew to come up with some GB ROMS, no?
Thanks for your thoughts!

Im rooted and using stock and all works well... I suggest as others have, download gps status, run it, then hit menu-tools-manage A-gps state-reset.
It should be ok after that...
GPS thinks im all over the place...
My GPS is also not working. I'm rooted but was having the same issue before rooting as well. I'm based in Houston, TX: Google maps is just off by a few miles, my time widget says i'm in Lynnville, IL, and Foursquare says i'm in some coastal town in Lithuania (and yeah it shows nearby locations in Lithuania to check into...i wonder if there's a badge for that).
Anyway, gonna attempt to return it today....will see if I can slip it past them.
I'm having GPS issues as well. It seems to take 5 to 10 min to get a location then it looses it and finds it again. Not happy with this at all. I've done a full reset and still no fix. I'm going to give CS a call and see if a new Tbolt will fix the issue.
Dan
My thunderbolt is fine. Just did a maps test and it found me in about 10s. I have two thunderbolts and the other one took about 1 minute to lock. Both tests were done from inside my house. Both are untouched stock form.
I also was having this issue and downloaded the gps status app and magically everything seemed to be working correctly. For some reason my phone kept saying that I was in "Balti" when I know I was in Portland. I think your best bet is to download GPS Status and reset a-gps status and see if that gets you back in line. Now my gps locks on quick and I am no longer in Balti.
Edit: oops
I'm no stranger to GPS issues on Android devices. When I owned a Samsung vibrant, it took forever to lock onto enough birds to get an accurate location, and I was constantly reseting GPS data and then running the GPS Test app testing it's functionality.
Do you really want to know how good your GPS is? Run GPS Test app with stand alone GPS only (no assist from data networks) and see how fast it locks and how accurate the position.
With the Thunderbolt, I bought the phone on launch date and didn't have any issues until I flashed my first custom rom. It worked perfectly after flashing it then out of the blue I noticed it wasn't working.
I flashed back to stock and it started working again. Just this morning, after a few days, when I needed the GPS for navigating a trip, I noticed it wasn't working again. I rebooted the phone and it was working again. Is it possible that something is interfering, such as turning wifi on/off? I'm not sure, but I think the reason for this not working at times is deeper than reseting the GPS data and it should work properly in stand alone mode.

GPS problms

Perhaps this is a ROM problem, but let's see if I'm the only one with this problem.
If I attempt to do a navigation (Either from Google Maps, or a voice command) it takes forever for it to start. For instance, I just moved from Detroit to Alanta. I needed to get from my house to the Airport and knew the general route, but wanted to be safe. So I start moving and using google maps, search for Atlanta Hartsfield Airport. It finds it. I click the navigation button and it switches to Navigation. It then sits and says "Searching for Satellites". It did this for 30 minutes. Then when it found a Satellite, it kept the connection for about 2 minutes, then went back to searching.
I defintely had a clear shot at the sky and in the last year I've been here, never had any problems with any of the other devices that I've owned. This isn't an isolated incidence. This happens regularly, without fail.
ROM: UnNamed
App: Google Maps to Navigation, or Assistant to Navigation
Anyone else have this issue? I also have the worlds worth BlueTooth, so I will be going back to a stock rom to ensure it's not an UnNamed issue, but wondering if this is possibly a known issue. Search didn't turn up much other than everyone raving about how the GPS was galaxies better than the Captivate.
No, not here.
I've been using UnNamed since 1.0.1 was released. My GPS takes a few minutes to find the satellites when I start it after not using it for a few days. I guess it has to build the ephemeris table. But once in locks, usually not more than a couple of minutes, it's been completely awesome. BTW, I'm about 75 miles north of you.
I'm actually about 20 to 30 miles north of Atlanta in the Woodstock area.
Interesting. I'll go back to stock and see if that fixes it. If it does, then I'll go back and put UnNamed on it and see if it was just a bad flash or something. I tried it again today on the way to the airport again just for the fun of it and it did the samething. 20 minutes to get a satellite, then every 3 to 5 minutes it dropped , then a few minutes later picked back up. Not very helpful as you can imagine.
I was having the same issues... i posted a thread about it.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1333409
none of the tips i tried fixed it.. But its worth a shot for you... I ended up wiping my phone today we'll see how that works..

[Q] Xperia s gps problem

Hello,
When I teke my xperia s on the first ride I realized that the gps freezes after about 10 - 20 minutes. I started testing on google navigation app, and the same sytuation in on Sygic navigation and GPS status & toolbox. Gps reciver is working fine for few minutes and after that period of time stops. The gps icon on status bar is blinking and programs are waiting for walid gps signal. Does anyone has the same problem ?
Best Regards !!!
Arek
Just got it yesterday, so will gonna test it first.
I've just reinstall system. After that ... the same. Gps stops after 10-20 minutes !!!
I have not got the phone yet, but I would say go and get a replacement.
I hope that's a one off,I get the phone tomorrow and that's one of the things I need to work without problems, anyone else having issues with it?

Right, more or less after 45min.
Phone was charging in kitchen, google navigation on, looked on screen about 2-3 in that 45min and never lost a signal.
I haven't had problems with my gps so far. I used it twice on trips (both times longer than 25min) with google navigation and used it numerous times for a few of my apps and it hasn't cut out on me yet.
I will keep track of it, but it hasn't failed me yet.
H've restet to factory settings. And after reinstal i have strong signal inside building on the secound floor of five. Maybe the problem was in logs of the gps reciver. I will keep my eye on it. Tommorrow again in the trip I will test the device. Many thanks for all !!!
Unfortunately, the same problem begins. Today I came to office. During the trip about 40 minutes all were quite good but after one hour gps stops. After reboot all is perfect but how long... Today I will go to the service center...
I am back at work on Wednesday, so test it properly then.

I've got the exact same problem over here is Singapore. My brand new set would suddenly lose gps signal after some minutes, no matter what app I used to test for signal. So definitely not software issue. Soft reset (yes, while driving!) solves the problem. Happened several times in last 4 days.
I'm a 10-year user of PDA GPSs so I'm very sure there's a hardware issue here. Really appreciate akaliszczuk's response after he returns from sony service centre so the rest of us know if we need to do the same. Thanks man. Also appreciate that you started this thread, cos it was hard to find any info about this, esp for such a new phone.
Very disappointd for such a beautiful product. Its gps fix is actually insanely fast at about 1-2 seconds!
Software used: copilot live 8.2, google maps, gps status (exact same suite I use in my old HD2 that never had a problem)
Hi,
Today i got the same problem (first time use of nav), using sygic or maps doesnt matter.
Did have to reset my phone 5 times in 1 hour navigate.
Looked in the settings, there is a app called Power Saver.
There you can turn Off and On functions at a % level of the battery.
Deleted the app and my drive home ( 1:30 hour) i did not have any problems.
Hello again, I was in office of Polish Distributor. They cange my phone to a new one. I havent any time for testing but tommorrow I will !!! I'll try to delete Pover Saver app too. But the first I will start with this app.

GPS turns on by itself after Android 4.4.4 update

Hi, I recently updated my phone to Android 4.4.4 and now I am having this issue: Every time the phone acquires a cell signal, GPS turns on about 10 seconds later and stays on for a long time. This happens even if the GPS and location services are turned off. As a result my battery drains in half the time that it used to. If I stop IQ Agent process, GPS icon immediately goes away until the next time phone reacquires the signal. This happens multiple times a day. I can easily reproduce the problem by toggling airplane mode. I don’t think it’s a conflict with any of the apps because the problem exists if I boot into safe mode. I called HTS but they never heard of it, said they will escalate the problem to the developers, but I don’t know if anything will be done. Does anyone else experiencing the same problem? My phone is not rooted and locked.
Thanks…

That usually means nothing will be done.
I haven't heard of this. I typically recommend backing up your data, and doing a factory reset; as this often (although not always) clears up random bugs after an OTA. Smart of you to eliminate the possibility of 3rd party apps by trying Safe Mode. But there may still be some migrated user settings causing a conflict.

I just got off the phone with ATT just yesterday, and I can confirm they are aware of the issue. But seeing how Lollipop is just around the corner, you might want to wait a bit, unless of course you're in dire straits.

You can turn off the GPS by stopping IQ Agent Service. It should stay off until the cell data connection is lost.
I think everyone should call them so they know it is happening to a lot of people. Otherwise nothing will get done. I am surprised that there is not that much chatter out there. It was hard to even find forum discussions.
Funny I just posted the same question in the generic M8 Q and A section. I just noticed it too. My battery life has not been affected that I can see after going through the data. I've gone and disabled any app that uses the GPS service but it's still coming on so it's not an app or app update that I can tell. I guess I can wait until LP comes out.
So far so good since I've stopped IQ Agent Service. It hasn't popped back up and I've made 5 or 6 phone calls since then.
I think I solved it…
I think I solved it… I believe the app DriveMode was causing an issue. Here is what I think happened. When I got my phone a year ago, I immediately disabled few apps, DriveMode was one of them. I believe the recent update was designed to more closely interact with DriveMode and even though the app was disabled, it appeared that as soon as the phone acquired data connection, it tried to determine whether or not the user was moving. When I re-enabled the app, I disabled it internally (within the app) and I guess that told the OS not to bother determining if the user was moving anymore. Here are the steps: I re-enabled DriveMode, I then went to google play and updated it to the latest version, I opened the app and immediately noticed GPS icon turned on, the screen appeared telling me to enable GPS, I checked ignore check box and left the location service running in battery save mode. I closed the Drive mode app and left it along without disabling it. I did this yesterday and haven’t noticed GPS turning on even once since then.
I hope this helps everyone solve this annoying problem; please let me know if this works for anyone…

I like this idea -
However, I was able to get rid of this issue by disabling the carrier IQ service. I did this using an application called Disable Service from the Google Play store.
Works like a charm, and has the added advantage of disabling the IQ service intrusion.

Unfortunately this only will work on rooted phones, mine is not.

Just want to throw my $0.02 in here....I'm having hte same issues noted in the thread, and it's murdering my battery life. I typically get 24-30 hours of battery life easily on this phone, but now if i dont spend all day killing IQ Agent, i get about 7. I can't root my M8 due to some work restrictions, so it's all manual IQ Agent task killing fo rme. although I was EXTREMELY active yesterday in killing the service ~30 times throughout the day yesterday, Android System (where IQ Agent lies) still managed to run 2hr 24 minutes of GPS on, according to two different battery/service monitoring apps. This, mind you, all occurred without my actual GPS toggle ever being switched on.
I'm waiting for a call back from HTC, and AT&T punted completely and denied any knowledge of why it would happen (although ironically offering to remote into my phone to "diagnose" the issue, which I could not do becuase I was in transit when I called and they required I remain stationary...)
I'm 100% convinced it's entirely due to the IQ Agent task, or another involuntary watchdog service trigging IQ agent. This task is started under at least two distinct condition, with no fail:
my phone goes between 4G and LTE (Subway, between towers/coverage zones, all flipping day long in my concrete-and-steel office building...)
I make or receive a phone call (can feel teh phone get hot in ~2 minutes while on the phone).
switching in or out of airplane mode (which is really an extension of #1).
I love my M8 like crazy, but I cannot wait until my next phone because I absolutely refuse to purchase anything associated with a cell carrier ever again. Fvck that.
Agreed...DriveMode part of the problem

Agreed. I mostly followed these steps by downloading the latest DriveMode, walking through DriveMode setup, then disabling DriveMode and then stopping the IQ Agent Service. SInce then, GPS has performed as it should, only on demand. I did notice that when switching from mobile to a wi-fi network that requires a sign in that the GPS fires up. But again, killing the service stops the random GPS after logging into the wi-fi. So overall, much better than the constant on/off, but still ATT needs to resolve this at some point.
Have a carrieriq blocked/inactive build in testing so we shall see if it is indeed the culprit by end of day.
I've been testing this build for a couple of days now, and so far the GPS has stayed off like a good little app should. It only turns on when I expect.
Update/Reply From AT&T as of 03/23
Finally!!! An admission from AT&T that they jacked up our phones with their software update back in January. It's only taken a month and a half, 4 calls to text support, 3 attempts to reach their urgent care department (by the way... they are completely incompetent. They call from an unknown number, I normally don't answer but I also couldn't answer anyway due to being at work. They leave a message requesting you call a number in KY and leave a message. Left a message on two different occasions and provided the days and hours they could reach me. Of course they call whenever they want and the process starts all over) in addition to all this, I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau that resulted in a call back from a corporate executive. Now the only problem is they don't have a solution for the issue yet and probably won't do anything with the Lollipop update that "SHOULD" be released within the next 15 days. No one should have to go through this but I honestly think everyone should file a BBB complaint just to show AT&T a lesson.

So - was it Carrier IQ? Did they say what was going on?
I know they said they don't have a solution, but it would be useful to know what is causing this. I found that disabling the carrier iq service does the trick, and WNC's ROM, which has it disabled by default, also does the trick.
Thanks for the update. My phone started doing the GPS thing a couple of weeks ago and my battery life has been shot.
The weirdest thing is that my issues only started 2 weeks ago, instead of when the update occurred in January, so ATT must be doing something weird on their network as well
