[Q] Restoring Stock Kernal - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, I am an armature on flashing Kernals, and by that I mean I never did it before. I know how to flash a ROM and I am good at that.
I want to the flash Bionix1.3 with KingKlicks kernal. I know how to flash it, but reverting back is going to be a problem for me.
I found the stock kernel, from here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=733792
My question is, when going back to stock, do I flash this through Odin? Do I flash it while using Bionix? Or do I flash stock, then use odin?
Yes I searched, and searched. No threads really ask this.
and thank you whom ever posts.
Oh, and one more question, which is better? KingKlicks or Vodoo OC?

kopykatkiller had a Clockwork Kernel installed. He was able to use Odin to flash back to a *stock* kernel.

^Hope that helped, it was posted by the OP on that thread..
KingKlicks vs Voodoo = That's your preference, I use Jacs..

Okay, do I do that while on Bionix, or flash stock rom via clockwork, then use odin to replace the kernel?

Really need help guys. Normally I don't double post, but I would like to get a answer ASAP. I am not someone who makes 10 topics on each sub forum...

kingclick vs. voodoo is by preference..
as to installing stock kernel.. what you need to look for is a kernel that's able to flash thru clockworkmod.. or you can just flash bionix1.3 without the kingclick or voodoo... are you having problem with the kernel that you have right now? my rule is if it's not broken, dont fix it..

Okay thanks.. I am installing Kingklick right now.. If I go back I will flash Bionix w/ regular kernel then.

Question....as well
I really want to try out a couple different custom roms, but I'm not sure if just using clockwork/nandroid is all you need to revert back to rooted stock completely. What I mean by that is, will my phone be recovered to what it was before flashing using clockwork/nandroid restore system, will it actually flash it back? Or is it just made for recovering when screwing up stock itself?
I'm a little confused, please help!

Alright guys... This is my situation. I'm running the old Axura 2.2 edition. I saw some screenshots of nero v3 and and read that flashing different roms isn't that hard. The last thing I need is to brick my phone. Therefore I have some questions...
1) How do I flash a different rom from my current rom? Do I have to flash back to stock???
2) What is this Voodoo thing about? I see threads about it making your phone fast but then it can also brick while flashing????
Please help!!!!

1) Its prob safest to flash back to stock. It gives you a clean slate to go on,
2) Voodoo is commonly called a lagfix, but its more then that. It converts your file sytem from the facory rfs to an ext 4 format. Check out supercurios thread in the development section for mere info. PLEASE make sure its disabled before flashing another rom.
3) Read thru the nero thread for proper flashing instructions.

ok so i need to read up on Odin on how to flash back and currently going to supercurious thread... thanks!
Safest to flash back to stock (use odin), But....... you really don't have to. The risk is it might soft brick and then you would have flash back to stock..... So flash away can't hurt. Just remember if you have a lagfix on your phone disable before flashing
I have flashed from Axura 2.2 to Nero3 to heathen, to Ginger Clone and back to Axura I never flashed back to stock....... I have had no problem.......
For the most part they are from the same leak......... so the kernels are not that different.

ODIN tutorial for you...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=810130
Going back to stock is not a necessity, but advised, since some settings and fragments from a previous ROM can remain and cause issues....not always though. You can always give it a shot, disable voodoo first, then just flash Nero through CWR.
wow thank you guys soo much... you guys cleared up everything... now im comfortable!
Glad to help. Let us know how it works out.

[Q] Unroot

I watched the noob video, and called my mom but I couldn't get any help.
Of course I searched too, but I couldn't find the specific answer to what I was looking for.
I have my SGS2 rooted and have the litening rom. I'd like to get back to stock. I've read to go back, I just have to flash the stock firmware using Odin. My question is do I have to flash to the stock kernel as well? I'm a little lost on the kernel bit, what do I do with it if anything?
I'm following this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
I want to unroot, so after flashing the stock rom, I flash stock kernel as well without worrying about insecure kernel and all that jazz?
Thank you.

Flash the stock rom you need with Odin, after reboot do a hard reset (*2767*3855#), make a backup of your apps and files first. You don`t need to flash a kernel after flashing the rom. Done
Thanks!

From cm 7.1 to stock?

So i rooted by flashing, via odin, CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEF_KJ2-v5.0-CWM5 over the stock 2.3.6 rom from kies update. I then flashed cm7.1 stable successfully after a nandroid backup of the original rom.
Now question is, if i perform a cwm backup, do i get back to stock rom, with my apps intact?
Another question about kernel: My kernel version doesnt have I9100XXXX in it, how do i pick a kernel version if i wana change/update my kernel with cf-root?
Thanks for the answers .
just restore from nandroid backup and everything will be as it was when you did backup
restore backup or reflash it
Thanks for the answers, any thoughts on the second question?

what kernel have you got? what kernel you want to have?
I managed to flash siyah kernel successfully with no crashes and what not. but one problem persists: when i start the phone everything is ok, but after i lock then unlock, display quality drops and everything becomes grainy, poorly drawn and somewhat pixelated. Anybody has an idea about that?
Should i just flash another kernel all together? what do you recommend with cm 7.1? I read somewhere about the stock cm7.1 kernel, where could i get that?
Seriously sorry for so much questions, but i think you can see how the issue is bugging me. Big Thank you for answers..

What to look for in a kernal

Hey guys, I'm not gonna ask the dreaded question "Which Kernal is best?", but I am currently rooted and want to overclock to 1.5, but besides that, what else should I be looking for in a kernal?
What about modems (or is that embedded in the kernal)?
We only have 2 options, Entropy or Siyah and they do not include a modem.
Check the dev section for kernels & modems.

Both kernels we have offer oc abilities.
Personally I would look at stability and battery life but that is just me. Try both and see which suits your needs.
Modems are not associated with kernel and depend on your area. Whichever works the best where you are.
We have two choices here and both are incredibly stable and allow overclocking. You can't go wrong. Basically the biggest difference as far as I can see is the recovery that comes with it which is almost entirely preference.

So if I find a ROM I like but want to experiment with the other available Kernal, is it as simple as flashing my ROM first, then once booted up go into Odin and flash the other kernal i want to experiment with?
Or is the kernal that comes with a ROM the one your stuck with?

Just use CWM to flash the zips provided or Mobile Odin if you prefer it that way.
No need to use a computer to change the Kernel.

Thanks for the quick response chris,
I guess what I'm asking is if I have a rom with the Syiah kernal, is it possible to keep that same ROM but swap kernals, sorry, I just wasn't clear on what your answer meant.
I'm guessing your saying it is indeed possible and just flash the .zip for a different Kernal on top of an already installed ROM.
Sorry, I'm tired...
Changing the Kernel on 2.3.4 & 2.3.6 roms will not break anything.
For CM7, CM9, MIUI etc you have to stick with what is included or see what works with it.

For example, latest Siyah with touch recovery. Awesome for flashaholics.
Your talking of version .14 I assume, if so, doesn't it say in .13 description that .13 would be the last for Gingerbread?
Obviously it works if your using it, so i'm gonna download now...

Sorry to be -that- guy

SO I have been tinkering a little with kernels and whatnot, but forgot to take a nandroid backup of my stock setup.
Just a quick question to ask, if I want to return to my stock kernel, is there a download link for it or am I sorta screwed in that respect?
Having said that despite not really being sure of the Perseus benefits, it does seem quite better on battery!
Thanks

You can get the stock kernel from downloading an odin package.
From the odin package, rename the I9300abcdf.tar.md5 to 19300abcdf.tar changing the extension.
Then you can extract the tar file and get the boot.img which is the stock kernel.
Then, you can drag and drop it and replace the existing kernel in any rom.zip file that you are going to flash.
Now you have stock kernel. :good:
Sorry if this is complicated. :3
If you're using an official firmware with custom kernel, just flash the same firmware via odin. Stock kernel replaces whatever was there.
If for custom roms, most will use stock or maybe slightly modified so just flash the rom again in cwm. The kernel in the rom will replace anything you had.
