[RELEASE] Voodoo (v0.2) ext4 lagfix for Fascinate! Now with AOSP boot animations! - Fascinate Android Development

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9817533#post9817533
Kernels originally posted in this thread are DEPRECATED.
After you read this WHOLE post, read it again. If you are unsure about something, check the links below. kthx
OK guys, here it is.
For those unfamiliar with Voodoo : http://project-voodoo.org/
This kernel includes ONLY the voodoo lagfix, no color fix ATM.
For FAQs : http://project-voodoo.org/faq
Also now included is the option of using aosp style bootanimations. The attached zips include one. If you want to use your own, then place a compatible bootanimation.zip in either /system/media or /data/local.
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-hacks/33932-bootanimation-zip-file-explained.html
http://www.dkszone.net/how-to-create-custom-boot-animation-for
First off, have PATIENCE PATIENCE PATIENCE!!!!!!
It takes a WHILE on the first boot to do the conversion and copy over your data. If you decide to revert back to stock, it will take a WHILE then to convert back. Don't reboot, let it do its thing.
Once you've flashed this kernel, don't just go flashing other kernels. Voodoo changes some key parts of your system and you will have fix them by hand if you flash another kernel without removing voodoo first. To remove, simply do adb shell "> /sdcard/Voodoo/disable_lagfix" and then reboot. If you want to re-enable voodoo, then remove that file.
If you have less than 220mb of space remaining on internal storage, then clean some stuff out before flashing this. I have also included a 1.2GHz overclocked kernel.
For those who get excited from staring at Quadrant all day: I KNOW YOUR SCORES ARE NOT AS HIGH AS THEY ARE WITH THE EXT2 "LAGFIX". This is to be expected. Voodoo does not mess with /dbdata but only /data. THIS RESULTS IN ABSOLUTELY NO LOSS OF FUNCTIONALITY OR USEABILITY.
If you are running the ext2 "lagfix", please uninstall it before using this. If you have problems, wipe data and try again. Voodoo should retain data, but nothing is foolproof. Be prepared to lose your data! If you have problems with force closes after uninstalling, make sure to wipe using the option in the privacy menu.
Thanks to Dirrk and DataSpree for help getting the kernel in a useable condition, and thanks to SuperCurio for the original lagfix and clues on how to get it working with the Fascinate.
If you would like to look at the code for yourself, please check my github @ github.com/jt1134
Enjoy!
******EDIT******
For anyone who flashed v0.1, I made a stoopid. Sorry. I've attached a fixed version. You will need to uninstall the current voodoo before flashing this. To uninstall simply do : adb shell "> /sdcard/Voodoo/disable_lagfix" . or, create a blank file in your favorite manner. You can also do this with a file explorer program such as Astro or Root Explorer. Then reboot. Once you've booted into android successfully, you can install the attached zip. If voodoo does not reinstall for you, make sure you have deleted /sdcard/Voodoo/disable_lagfix. Repeat: this is only if you are running v0.1!
edit: removed attached kernels. newer versions available on rom manager.

Great work as usual JT.

This is the real lag-fix guys..
Quadrant scores will be less than the OCLF because that "fix" uses a loopback device, which doesn't honor fsync function calls when accessing SQLite db's.. Quadrant score includes db write tests, so what you see with this voodoo lag fix is an actual represntation of the devices capability. The OCLF scores are artifically inflated.
Please keep in mind that untill you uninstall Voodoo, you cannot flash a kernel without ext4 support or you'll probably boot into a stock looking device with FC hell. Basically if you're ever going to flash anything, uninstall voodoo first.

Amazing work!!!! Thanks again!

Now we need an overclocked voodoo kernal, to see what this thing will really do. Hint Hint.

Works flawlessly, THANK YOU! will donate for sure

Safe to say I'll be fellating you tonight.

Good collaboration work jt1134

Worked flawlessly here too...took awhile to boot, but all is good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks!

So just so everyone is crystal clear. If I or anyone has one of jt's [or Dirrk's or any] OC Kernal's those should be re-flashed back to stock prior to installing this voodoo kernal. Yes?
That is, don't flash this voodoo kernal on top of an existing OC Kernal. Right?

Thanks to our amazing modding community for their hard work. Jt we all love you man.

no. it works if you flash on top of it.. all it will do is replace the kernel you have .. but if you want to flash to jt's kernel and you have voodoo, you have to disable voodoo then flash that kernel..

Thanks JT and team! Your work is appreciated!

no need to flash back to stock. just don't flash another kernel "after" flashing this one unless you disable_lagfix first

Great to see this is already ready! Just to be clear I have two quick questions. Does this waste any more battery power than the stock kernel? Also this does not overclock the phone, right?

No and no, at least it would be terribly unnoticeable if it did affect battery life.

good lookin out.. about to flash in a sec!!

Flashed Simply Honey 3.8 - finally on 2.3.4

Just thought I'd share my positive experience.
I was on Froyo (Simply Galaxy 2.8).
First of all, not many may know that the GB bootloaders are perfectly backwards compatible with both Eclair and Froyo.
So I used Odin to flash the GB bootloaders, then booted into the recovery and Froyo to make sure everything works fine. It did.
Only then did I use Odin to flash the Simply Honey 3.8 + 512 pit file.
Booted up just fine.
Everything seems to work fine, the TouchWiz 4.5 is very nice as well.
So don't be afraid, feel free to flash it, no real need to stay on 2.2 -2.2.1 anymore.
What about CM7? Those GB bootloaders are compatible with CM7?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117990
SOLVE YOUR RECOVERY AND RAINBOW PROBLEMS ON GINGERBREAD ROMS
WORKS ACROSS FROYO AND GINGERBREAD ROMS BASED ON SAMSUNG GALAXY S I9000 OR SGS-T959.
ALSO WORKING PERFECTLY WITH CYANOGENMOD AND MIUI
Having said that, I am referring to another thread.
I personally have not verified that.
I know the GB bootloaders work fine with both Simply Galaxy 2.8 (Froyo) and Simply Honey 3.6 (GB 2.3.4)
Hm...i might have to flash it...thanks for the information!
Hey OP thanks! Your words are encouraging. I am still on Simply Galaxy 2.8 and thinking of moving to SH 3.8. Since you already passed the test, I hope you can answer the below questions
- Did you disable voodoo before Odining SH 3.8? or before the bootloaded flash?
- Where is the PIT file from? I think EB uploaded only the tar?
- When odining SH 3.8 did you tick options Re-partition, Auto reboot, F Reset time, Flash lock?
- Did you add TW 4.5 addon or is it part of the ROM? How is the response of scrolling and all in TW 4.5 on our hardware?
- Does the TW 4.5 comes with new versions of samsung widgets that are scrollable, resizable?
1) did not touch Voodoo - was enabled before, stayed enabled after
2) the PIT is from Eugene's Froyo rom..let me see here it is:
http://files.androidspin.com/downlo...in/samsung/vibrant/&file=s1_odin_20100512.rar
3) when odining - yes, I checked re-partition, but it didn't, since the partitions are the same for "before" and "after", so all my folders stayed "as is"
The rest of checks were just left by default. Not "Flash lock" if I remember correctly.
Only:
Re-Partition
Auto Reboot
F. Reset Time
4) I flashed TW 4.5 manually from CWM recovery after I flashed the ROM itself
http://www.multiupload.com/I955XLXNNJ
5) Sorry, not sure about that one
Thanks! Going to take the jump to GB! I have version 1.81 of Odin which has Flash lock check and also a seperate file selector for Bootloader (ver 1.70 in PDA you select the bootloader file). May be I play safe and use ver 1.70
I used version 1.83=)
Worked fine everytime I used it, never seen a "Fail" with it
http://hotfile.com/dl/116095613/1d3d429/Odin3_v1.83.exe.html
If that option is checked by default, just leave it checked, I did not change anything, except manually checked "Re-Partition"
hey guys, has everyone know theme that compatible with simply honey 3.8?
do you know where i can find it?
this rom is fantastic..i just flash it with odin method..
Everything looks smooth so far! You guys are awesome!

Can you try 1.6Ghz OC with smartass and see how battery life is?
How to Flash Kernel:
You can flash the zip file in ClockworkMod Recovery. You will need a rooted kernel with ClockworkMod Recovery, you can try my stock kernel here to get CWM if you don't have it yet.

Not sure, it COULD be since international is nearly identical to AT&T.
Can you try it and let me know?
I am sure it won't brick it but at the worst you might lose voice or something but it should boot on regular GS2, just have your stock kernel in hand just in case.
Ugh wont dl. Keep getting a "content not supported by phone"

Sorry for that, you can try downloading on another browser, the stock browser won't download, I think Dolphin HD works or just download on computer and copy over.
I'll be trying this out tonight and I'll report on any immediate stability problems. I'll also let it run over night tomorrow and I'll update you on how well the kernel's running by then.
Edit 1) This is remarkably stable at 1.6Ghz forced (performance governer). It lasted 30 minutes before crashing on stock voltage. I'm impressed.
Okay I used unnamed 1.02 and it booted but upon benching it crashed and on reboot was stuck with boot animation always on. Had to pull the battery.

Make sure when benching don't set SetCPU app to "set on boot" just in case your phone can't go 1.6Ghz. That's probably what's causing it.
so far so good . first time ive been able to stay oc'd at all. normally itll freeze after a minute at 1400. now been on 1600 for 20 mins straight running tests and all is well. benchmark s are through the roof
Installed fine for me on UnNamed 1.0.3. Long first boot, but after that no problem. Will report back tomorrow after some playing.
FYI, you'll find that there are quite a few people in these forums who are sticklers about following licenses such as the GPL.
hint hint...
tried flashing in clockwork and it says installation aborted
a little bit slower than entropies and less features.. throw in gpu oc and ill be sold.
Flashed it, then put my phone down to charge for an hour to watch the ICS event, when I went back to my phone it was really warm. Don't know if the two are related.
Sent from my SGS II
Very unstable with my test, I can't overclock to 1600 without a freeze.
Seems to be slower than kernel from unknown rom in benchmark.
Any of you getting good overclock with unknown rom and this kernel?
Thank you for the work!

Try this one, it includes the Odin I used, I left out Odin tar file for this kernel because I don't want people Oding kernels and accidentally brick their phones, try the root kernel then flash this in CWM.

[ROM][ICS][LPQ][ODIN+CWM] DarkyROM HD Base XXLPQ for I9100

CWM Flashable ICS ROM!
What's inside:
XXLPQ -> duh
LPQ Modem
LPJ CSC -> international
SU (you need to download Superuser from Market)
Busybox
Nova Launcher (as primary, TWLauncher is on the SD for install with DarkyOTA)
Lots of apps moved to SD (67) if you miss anything, feel free to install them back using DarkyOTA
custom apns-conf
deodexed
zipaligned
more small stuff
LPQ Kernel:
Touch Recovery
su
bootanimation
init.d
Do factory restore (data wipe) through CWM before flashing
Most issues come from the updated boot loaders since Samsung started releasing ICS... It's the sole reason that I released a Odin custom ROM for KL1 (on darkyrom.com) So people that did flash stock ICS from Samsung have a way of getting older, better, custom-friendly boot loaders and a stable ROM to begin with. CF-Root and the kernel that I released have little in difference. We do the same exact thing (well I do not include Superuser or DarkyOTA in it). Difference is just in the way we accomplish them I also make sure that I have /data and /system mounted when the recovery boots and that is all. It's a hacked stock kernel
You can not boot because Samsung does not want you to boot custom firmwares! Even my Jig stopped working with ICS Bootloaders and I could no longer clear my counter...
Your "Weather on Lockscreen" FCs because it has been removed and it has been explained how to be brought back.
You might need to flash twice because the first time the installer was not able to properly mount /data or any other partition for a good install, but the kernel should have flashed alright, so the second run will go fine (I will work on that)
Commenting that you do not have root with this ROM is not serious! It's properly stated in the OP that you need to get Superuser from Market! Along with DarkyOTA, to have access to the uninstalled apps.
If you flashed v2 and still have Chrome... I have no clue... the app is not in v2.
This ROM is nothing but a Stock deodexed rooted and cleaned ROM.
For those who do not follow me elsewhere, I release primarily Base ROMs and kernels, that are just like this one, or in Odin package that give a good experience and nice battery life without all unnecessary Samsung services and apps without putting many extra features. Those get developed by the rest of the Darky team and get distributed through the OTA app, so you can make almost anything out of this base release.
USB access has changed since ICS and you have to go much deeper to get it working
For USB: Disconnect USB Cable -> Settings -> More... -> USB utilities -> Connect Storage to PC -> Turn USB Debug (if on) -> Connect USB Cable -> Turn on USB storage
Yeah... it's lengthy

well, it's freely downloadable through the Market and you actually will not need it until you connect to google and get some apps that might use it
DarkyOTA is also not included for the same reason.

hey ficeto,
can you put the kernel separately for download?
thx a lot!
can I install this on a 2.3.5 rooted SGS2? or do i need to install the stock ICS first?
Used to be a big fan of Darky ROMS on my SGS. Glad to see it making an appearing on ICS for the SGS2. Downloading now
Thanks ficeto. Is Joel also developing for the SGS2? Are you guys planning on releasing a fully-loaded Darky ICS Rom?
one quick question before installation. is it deodexed or odexed ?
will give it a try. thanks mate.
Good to see you here man...
Keep the good stuff coming.
Nice. Thanks Ficeto. Is it ODEX or DEODEX? ZIPPALING?
deodexed, aligned, rooted -> all
all you need is a CWM kernel to be able to install this. It's ok to go from GGB to ICS with this
Do not forget to factory reset!
Finally a CWM Flashable version.
Havent tried ICS since the early days. Guess I'll give this a go!
Now we just need AOSP Look
Edit: Whats Siyah's alpha kernel like on this? Anyone tried it?

Pictures disappeared

I need some help figuring out what has happened. I'm on beans rom, perseus kernel, clean install. I have my camera set to save pics to my 32gb sdcard. Suddenly my pics were not showing up in the gallery. After looking around I see my dcim/camera folder has changed to the "c" looking like the pi symbol. And there is a folder called lost.dir that has all my pictures, but they are renamed with just numbers and no extension. If I put .jpg at the end of one of these files it is definitely my pics. I have them always backing up to dropbox, so I didn't lose anything, but I really want to know what happened. Anyone have a clue?

I was never able to find mine. Set the Camera to store on the 32Gb Sandisk and they were never stored. Just tried it again today using Beans this time and the same result. I dont know what the problem is, but I'm willing to wager it's a Camera bug.

Now to answer your question, this is a common issue people are experiencing with Beans and the Perseus kernel. Be advised that the Perseus kernel might be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but if you don't understand what it's doing and how it changes some of the things you're describing, well .... let's just say that you might wind up posting on XDA a question like you both have asked.
Now, not all ROMs that use this kernel have this issue, and likewise not all ROMs that use other kernels have this issue. I run CleanROM 4.5 w/Perseus 33.4 and it runs like a madman with his hair on fire.
What I would suggest to you is this:
1. If you like the Beans ROM, then try the following:
- Redownload the ROM
- Wipe your Cache, Dalvik, System, Internal Storage, Format Data, and Internal Memory (Use TWRP) and for god sakes make sure that you have saved the Beans ROM on your extSD as well as your backup.
-Reflash
-After reflashing, wipe Cache and Dalvik again
-----If you didn't select Perseus during the installation procedure (if it's offered), then after you boot up into Beans, go back to recovery and flash the kernel by itself.
If this doesn't solve the problem, then try flashing another kernel and see if that helps. PBJ and Saber are quite popular as well.
2. Try a different ROM with the Perseus kernel. CleanROM 4.5 ACE is out, it's amazing, and Perseus 33.4 works great on it. Be advised that it's not integrated into the AROMA installer and that you'll need to manually flash it in TWRP. No big deal at all so don't be intimidated. Just be advised that you still should wipe your Cache and Dalvik after flashing both the ROM originally and the kernel afterwards.
Hopefully this will point you both in the right direction!
Where are my props lol :good::good::good:
Ha, good call. I dont recall what setup I was using in the past when I had the problem, but I'm on Beans10 and Perseus that installs on his Aroma option. I'll have to try PBJ after he finishes uploading B11.

Keep in mind that you can do a separate kernel flash over your current beans install. Just go to the Original Android Development Subsection and find the Perseus kernel or other kernels. Be sure to back up your stuff in TWRP prior to flashing!!!
Btw, I updated the signature to include the donate link everyone's been asking about lol :fingers-crossed::good:
Are you using the sd swap feature on the kernel? I had the same problem until I switch where my pictures were stored

No, I've never tried the swap. Everything worked fine for a long time, then suddenly this happened. My main concern is that I've heard several report failing sdcards. I just wanted to understand what might have triggered it to suddenly fail.

FAQ's
Q: TWRP/CWM is giving error XYZ?
A: Update to latest recovery, redownload file & check MD5, reinstall.
Q: Why doesn't this include modem XYZ?
A: Because I felt like it.
Q: Will this work on...
A: Stop moving your lips. No, only the L900 i605
Q: I read an error in Aroma saying modem not installed, what do I do?
A: Try again, if issue presists use a diffrent modem until you can get the one you want working. Also look here.
As long as the MD5 checks out it's probably a borked script. A damn comma I bet!
Q: My question isn't in the FAQ or thread?
A: Cry about it. :silly:
MOD Q: Why did you post this here? PREPARE TO BE MOVED!
A: Hold on fair and accurate Moderator, in the rules I felt it was conveying apks and themes, & this is firmware.
ANOTHER WARNING!! I do not own this phone I do own the Sprint variant USE EXTREME CAUTION!

MINE!
I don't know if this even flashes since the META-INF differs. Please test and report mileage. Let me assure that the mount points are the same on my device (l900) and the i605. Ie;
Code:
"/dev/block/mmcblk0p10"
Reuploading File Now
Alright, so I conducted some risky flashing. Apologizes for the underperformance. Some really neat results occurred! I discovered that nothing wanted to work with only device specific changes, not even boot! Odd.. Furthermore, when I flashed the stock recoveries they worked! Keeping in mind this is all on my L900. I believe this MOD is fully working (now) for the i605, please test & let me know what Big Red folks think!

Can you successfully flash a different modem? (with this tool) Even better, at the end of install it says installer status, what is it? (should read 0) Also in PhilZ6 or CWM one can goto advanced and show log, & report a brief description of the error back here. It would be extremely useful.
Also to note, I've been reading this fourm and found that quite a few folks are having issues installing the MJ9 modem. I'm pulling a modem off Sammobile now, & will update file in OP if/when needed.
