Does WIFI not work to send/receive MMS? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It takes me several minutes to send a 50 KB image, if not longer.
I download over 500kbps from the Android market, yet it takes several minutes to download a 30 kb MMS.
I talked to T-Mobile and they said Android has issues with using WIFI, is that true?
My SIM card is literally 5 years old, I wonder if that is it?

I think MMS has to use OTA data...Its a carrier thing not a phone or android thing
(Correct me if I'm wrong someone)

Well mine does that from time to time as well but I never received the update a of last night. So I don't think its related to the update. Usually I'd your connected to wifi and your phone detects that a signal (3g) is faster then itll connect to that.

Yeah, I am aware. It is just that no matter how small the file is, it won't send.

I notice when I send an mms, 3G takes over wifi, and when finished sending mms wifi comes back.

Well whoever you talked to at Tmo that didn't answer this for you was a moron......
All mms and sms messages are sent over the network, regardless of wifi being on or not....
So even you are ay home connected to wifi, yet your actually signal strength to the network is low....it will take a while to send a mms...

Dead topic probably but........I think T-Mobile situation a bit different....T-Mobile has Wifi Calling plan....and where i've read, you can send/receive messages over wifi.
http://support.t-mobile.com/doc/tm24195.xml
"Ability to send/receive SMS and MMS, and access Web2go over Wi-Fi."

Yea but you have to use T-mobile hot spot or their @home service.

Just install the WiFi Calling App. It's all over the place here. Do a search!

Sms through wifi?

Reception at my house is horrible and I'm not getting messages until I leave the area..... however when i send them.. The recipient gets then right away.... Why? And is there a way to force the phone to check for sms waiting to be received? Maybe through my wifi?

No MMS via external networks.
Verizon uses something called "split DNS" so that you can't even get a successful DNS lookup (IP Address) of the hosts mentioned in your phone's APNs if your only active interface is the WiFi I/F - but if you look up them up via the Mobile Network I/F, you can find them.
If VZW does that, then it's also highly likely that they perform ingress route-filtering in the IP layer. You can't contact VZW's MMS servers "from the outside world" - only from Verizon's own network. (Your phone's Mobile Network I/F has an IP address assigned within one of VZW's blocks of addresses).
Presumably this is done to prevent free-loading, spamming, or DoS attackes on MMS servers from networks outside of Verizon's own.
In any event, no MMS via WiFi.

PS As for the asymmetry in delay between sending and receiving at your location via the Mobile Network - no clues.

using google voice helps. i have the same problem at my house and i just use google voice
GV is probably the best bet
There is another one called text plus. Stay away from that one. My brother in law went to Europe and used that app although it worked it was like a half an hour wait to get messages. I figured there is a lot of "routing" but from home I had the app installed on my wifes and my phones. In the same house connected to the same network of course it was like 20 minutes to receive the message

Tried handcent with no luck. Still can't send or receive MMS.
I have an s3 and also have this issue - anyone find a solution?
Google a little bit. Sounds like this is a known issue for T-Mobile on many different devices. :-(

Really? I never had the problem while texting

Unfortunately this is an issue, but I don't know if the blame can be placed on TMobile, as the stock messaging app will allow me to send an MMS over WIFI. The reason being is that MMS is sent using the carrier's data connection. With the stock app, while using wifi, it disconnects from the wifi connection just long enough to send the MMS. However, when using a third party, it does not register and therefor isn't sent until you disconnect from the wifi or resend through the stock app.
Works for me bro. But then again, my data is always on...

This is a pretty crap issue.
I have no damn signal in my house (even though I really should), so Wifi Calling is a godsend (even though it likes to randomly turn off).
But I've got five MMS pending download because of a group text, and I can't reply. I would have to go up the street to get them.
I'm on Verizon and have the same problem. Only solution to sending and receiving is to clear data, but have to do that every time i send or receive an MMS on stock. tried Go SMS and Handcent, and get the same issues.

This worked for me at work and at home. Just need to do this for every wifi access point you use. I found this on Rootzwiki.
Long press on your Wifi connection
Press "Modify Network"
Scroll down to IP Settings and change that from "DHCP" to "Static"
Scroll down to DNS and enter the following information:
DNS 1 - 8.8.4.4
DNS 2 - 8.8.8.8
Press Save
REBOOT YOUR PHONE! This is important.
I would love to be able to send SMS through my WiFi because I get crap signal in my room.... is there a WiFi calling app for att?

Can send, can't receive MMS messages :(

My phone is not rooted, haven't changed the APN at all, using GoSMS Pro as my texting app of choice......the problem is that I can send, but can't receive any MMS messages. Any idea what I can look for to see if it's a phone setting issue? I have confirmed with AT&T that things are setup up properly...i'm stumped

I usually turn of mobile data when I'm on WiFi and I've realized that you cannot receive them on WiFi (not sure about sending). I had to turn mobile data on, while on WiFi, in order to receive MMS.
APN issue?

I learned that when I had my Atrix 2, so thats not the problem....APN is set to the stock settings, have not been messed with at all. Stock messaging app is the same, will send but wont receive mms. I got a call from an AT&T tech in Atlanta today telling me they have rectified the network issue. We tried it again but still no go, he said it sounds like I have a defective device cause everything in my account is set how it should be, no more network issues bit the problem remains. Gonna swap it out this evening.

[Q] MMS wont's send when on WiFi

I have a unrooted s4 and it will not send mms messages when connected to wifi. I have to turn wifi off for the mms to send. I looked for some auto retrieve/send mms setting but couldn't find any. Anybody have any ideas what I can do?
Can anyone else confirm this???? If so, please do, so i can submit this bug to Samsung.
I can't really test it myself, i have poor signal in my apt. The few times i have received at home it's worked fine. Haven't tried sending.
last time i checked, MMS dont send via wifi. it goes via cell signal/data never worked when i was on my nexus. even now, when using Go SMS on my S4 i notice when i send a MMS while on wifi i can see the 3G/4G icon turn on just to send the picture then turn off
I have used it at home while on Wi-Fi.

The OP was not expecting it to use Wi-Fi. He was expecting it to work while Wi-Fi was connected.

My MMS is working while WiFi is on, but the MMS doesn't actually use WiFi to send the message, it is sent via the cell/data signal.

the problem may be when using the stock SMS app it may not send over wifi. when you're connected to wifi the phone defaults to sending everything it can via data that can be sent. are you using the stock SMS app?
i just tried to do it with stock SMS and the second i went to attach a photo, it disconnected my wifi to grab 3G/4G to send the photo. once it was done, it jumped back on wifi
Cell tower issue....low signal issue? Dont contact Samsung until you try your phone in other places. Drive...if your old enough down the road like 5 miles...see if the mms goes through. Call Verizon and see if they are having issues with that tower.

I've never been able to send MMS through WIFI. So I always just thought it was something Verizon did to make you use more Data. If anyone knows a way around this. Would love to know as well.
Same Issue
I am having the same issue when i am connected to WiFi in my house. No MMS will send. Once i turn off WiFI the MMS will go through. I have Data turned on as well) My tower strength is fine. Any ideas how to solve this? I am running a Verizon GS4.

MMS messages never traverse the "internet" which is the reason why A) it cannot be sent/received over WiFi and B) using VZW data cannot be circumvented.
My wife has had the GS4 for a couple of days and ran into this yesterday. She tried sending me a picture but didn't notice that it didn't go. She asked my son if I rec'd the picture and showed him and obviously I didn't so she sent it to him as well. That's when she realized the one to me was still "Sending...". His never went either. When she tried to send to me, she was in a store and probably NOT on WiFi (unless it was "open").
This morning, she asked about it and I told her "turn off WiFi" but that didn't kick it in. I then tried sending her a picture (a trick I learned on the Thunderbolt with AOSP ROMs) - when her phone toggles off WiFi to receive mine, it should also see pending, outgoing messages on hers and send it. Didn't work....
I then used Handcent SMS and chose "Edit" on each message, did NOTHING to them, and hit Send - and they went. WiFi was ON as well. She also sent an MMS moments later that went.
Even if it were a "tower" issue, she should have come along to multiple other towers while out driving.
I uninstalled the caller id app, and that solved this.
Isn't that a system app ? I haven't rooted her phone (yet)...
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Yes, but it is deletable. My wife's not rooted either.
I cancelled the trial in the app then went to Application Manager and instead of the "Uninstall" button, it was a "Disable" button. I hit it, nothing obvious happened, but the app is gone from the app drawer now.
Still Not working
I have disabled the Caller ID app and still no go. I see the 4G icon pop up when i go to send, then it disappears and the MMS message just sits there, never sends. Does anyone else have any suggestions or ideas to solve this?

Yes we know MMS does not utilize the internet via wifi. Yes, we know MMS must travel over your carrier's cellular data connection.
While connected to wifi, with the 4g/3g Icon NOT showing, this issue comes up. You go to send an MMS, the 4g/3g Icon pops up for a short time, say 30 seconds, and then disappears. But the message never sends. If I turn wifi off, MMS then send flawlessly, sitting in the exact same spot I was previously. Signal strength is not an issue, or it would not work without fail when wifi is off in the same location, and then suddenly stop working when Wifi is back on.
A third party SMS app did not mitigate the issue for me. Which has been suggested by some as a solution.
Can anyone provide any additional insight on this issue? VZW tech support is a joke.

Any ideas? Still an ongoing issue. I can not send group mms at all when connected to wifi. I have to disconnect from wifi, copy message text, delete message, paste, and resend with wifi disconnected.
Sometimes if I reboot my phone it will be able to send a MMS over Wifi but eventually it will not be able to...
I'm gonna install a custom touchwiz rom and see if that helps.

mobile network problems

hi guys i"ve a problem with my galaxy mega 6.3. I've got really bad connection. wifi is great but mobile connection sucks.
any solutions?/
furthermore can anyone tell me where i can find a pit file??
I seem to be having the same problem. I can receive phone calls, recieve text messages and internet works but I can't send text messages or mms.

For some odd my Mega & my wife's Note 3 all changed the texting number about 5 hours ago. Neither of us could text. I changed the messaging number back & all has been well since.
I'm not sure if this is an issue with mobile network, but my Mega takes a long time to send text. It takes 2-10 sec to send an sms and 20 seconds to send an mms (lte is 15-20 mbps where I live). Sometimes it appears loading icon and takes forever when I send an sms, and the person I send to receive severals copies of that same message. (I've also tried Hangout to send messages. The same thing happened)
Other phones usually send sms instantly and mms in 2-5 seconds.
Youtube and web on 4g seems perfectly fine on my mega though.
