so my dad just started using his vibrant for music, and it annoys the both of us that all of the ringtones show up. I tried the .nomedia file, and that did work for the music player,
but it also made picking the ringtone for the phone impossible.
so is there anyway to do this?

place an empty file called .nomedia in the directories where the ringtones, notifications are.
I do as follow on the linux box

apparently you didn't read my post. I didn't use adb, but i created a .nomedia file, and put it in those folders. And it did work, they didn't show up in the music player.
however, it ALSO removed all those files from the entire system. If i go to pick my ringtone, they don't show up, not in the stock picker, or rings extended.
anyone have any ideas?
Back in the days...i had the same issue with the G1.....

I doubt if there is a solution to this, unless someone is hiding it from us. I also only know about the .nomedia file, but it does totally eliminate it from the system and not just from the player. The same thing with the picture Gallery - it shows all the icons and folder.jpg files also = VERY annoying.
As far as I know, it has always been an issue which I only have to live with. - any updates will be appreciated, please.

I use an appacalled ES File Explorer to do any file management.
the .nomedia files appear to hide files from the gallery, music player and video player apps when that "media search" occurs upon disconnecting USB or powering up. Doesn't seem to remove them from the system.
Using the file explorer above I can very simply navigate to and play/view any such media in with whatever player I wish to. Suggesting trying ES file explorer out.

interesting, i'll give this a shot. I know manually adding the .nomedia file through windows or astro kills it from the entire system, except obviously for file managers.
well i tried creating a .nomedia file there, same thing.
but i really do like the UI of that app, so i guess the best thing to do now is just put .nomedia files everywhere and use that app to find my ringtone.
The album covers can all be hidden from gallery by calling the files AlbumArt.jpg - Im still looking for answer to hide music from player

Cheers bud,I've done that,unchecked a few things and it seems the
WMA files I've got have reverted back OK to
Windows Media Player and have the right icon,but all my MP3's have the
Windows icon you usually get with programs and aren't selectable to play
from File explorer,if I select a track it just drops back to the home screen.
Music tracks are still selectable from HTC Player....
I'm at a brick wall at the moment,don't know what to try next ?
have you tried a soft reset?? and all so tried opening a track through windows media player that way it might pick them up
Yep tried that and updating my WM library,everything plays OK
but I still have this strange icon issue in File Explorer and
of course I can't select them to play from within there...
Seems like I will have to delete all the music and re-load them again,
all my ringtones and notification tones have stopped working.

I can't get any of my music files to select as a ringtone,I missed several calls,texts and emails...

I have replied to your issue in another forum. Try using Resco File Explorer or Total Commander to set the file association back to wmplayer.exe.

but the issue isnt where the files are stored,they do already show up in my
selection of available ringtones and notification sounds (I had already been using them,so they are correctly placed in the phones folders.
The problem is if I click on one to hear it before deciding to select it for
shall we say my main ringtone nothing happens due to it
not having the correct file type....
I have selected 'Opens with' as WMP and they will open up from File Explorer
and play perfectly OK
and also in HTC player,but the file type is showing as 'unknown type'
instead of the generic HTC music icon it should have....

OK I tried your suggestion Web and ringtones work now... thank fook for that cheers...
although they appear as more than one copy of each in the
selection folder now,this isnt a problem as I know to select the top
version of each to my alotted ring tones and can just delete the
other copies from where I have them stored.
So everything plays as it should now,it's just the icons that
are wrong.

How do I exclude folder on the stock Vibrant's music player?
I believe you can put a period at the beginning of a folder to hide it from being indexed from the Gallery or Music applications. (So a folder called ".Music" would be hidden.)

This is true. I tried this when I wanted to hide my custom ringtones from the music player, but when I did it hides the folder from the entire system. The result was I could no longer choose (see) custom ringtones from the system settings. I wonder if there's a way to hide files/folders from the media player while still keeping them available to the system sounds settings. On my mt3g, the media player ignores files in the directory sdcard/media/ringtones. On the Vibrant, the player shows all media files no matter where they are placed. Anyone?

I got around it by renaming my ringtones from .mp3 to .mid, seems the music player ignores .mid files.
But since the stock music player doesn't have a homescreen widget, i went ahead and bought MixZing, which lets you select what folders to play music from.

I have scanned various threads regarding this topic and we all know how even if you place your ringtones/notifications in a different folder than your music files they still show up in Music Player
We also know about the 2 workarounds: Use a different music player that lets you pick which directories your music is stored (best solution so far) or put an empty file named .nomedia where your ringtones are. That is not a good choice since it hides the ringtones from media scanner and therefore will not be selectable as a ringtone or notification unless you use a third party app.
Workaround #3: (my preference)
I followed the instructions from this post:

1) - On your sdcard, create a folder called "media", then create another folder in that called "audio".
2) - Inside the "audio" folder, create 3 seperate folders called "Alarms", "Notifications" and "Ringtones".
3) Convert your ringtones and notifications from MP3 to WAV. Yes they will be slightly larger, I converted PLAINRING.MP3 > WAV and it went from 74kb to 613kb. Not a big deal.
4) Copy the WAV files to the correct directories you just created and you've got tones! They will be hidden from Music Player but they will show up with all your other ringtones and notifications.
No need for root or any third party apps...unless you want to convert MP3 to WAV on your phone instead of a PC

I tried the "ringtones" folder, tried the .nomedia file, and neither of those solutions really worked well.
Your idea did the trick perfectly!
Stock music players haven't been updated yet? So, we can choose just the directories we want.

I am not sure, they might have updated by now - you resurrected a 3+ month old thread. Since you did not add to the solutions and your only question is something not directly related to fixing the issue and could have been easily checked out on your own, I am not sure for your reason for resurrecting this thread. Now that it has been brought back how about you check out the stock app and report back?
I just make a playlist that does not include the ringtones.
I'm running SC 2.9.1. When I try to listen to music, the music players don't locate or the songs don't show up in the play list. When I try the stock player, I get a Vcast error "Would you like to down music"? When I try the music player that comes on SC 2.9.1, nothing shows up in the view. The same thing happens when I use WinAmp. I've renamed the music folder a few times and still no luck.
Should I reinstall SC 2.9 and then 2.9.1 update? Or has anyone else had this problem and solved it?

It sounds to me like you may have a .nomedia file on your sdcard. Search for any file named .nomedia that is on your sdcard and delete them, reboot and when media scanner does it thing it'll find your music. I haven't heard this problem from other users so I would suspect that this is the culprit.

After I deleted the .nomedia file and rebooted the SF, I was able to see and play the music files. But then I rebooted the SF, the .nomedia files comes back. It keeps doing this everytime I reboot the phone, so this doesn't allow me to play media files. I have to delete the .nomedia files everytime after I reboot to play media files.
Is there an application that will remove .nomedia? Does anyone know a way to remove the file permanantly?

Sounds like you have a script that is attempting to speed up your media scanner, I don't know what you have on your phone so I can't help you solve your problem.
I'll make a suggestion though, use an app that makes the Media Scanner scan, for example "Rescan Media Root" which is free on the market. After you delete the .nomedia file, just run the app instead of rebooting. Should be quicker than what you're doing right now. But in regards to stopping the .nomedia file from coming back eventually, dunno.

I have a bunch of music on an sdcard and it was working fine, but I got tired of seeing all the album art in the gallery, so I used the app called Explorer to put a .nomedia file in the music folder, and the album art disappeared from the gallery, but then the music wouldn't show in the music app either. So I deleted the .nomedia file but the music still won't show in the music app. Since deleting .nomedia I've cleared cache and data in the music apps, rebooted, all that stuff. What to do?? I can still play the music with the music app if I go thru Explorer. If I have to I'll just rdelete the music folder and reload it from my hard drive...
So if I add the music back to the card from the hard drive it shows back up in the music app. Hassle but at least it works
I noticed the same thing with my photos, after deleting .nomedia they did not come back but any new photos added to the folder showed up fine.
Many aftermarket media players will let you set your music directory directly and ignore the .nomedia file, Poweramp for example. You can then use the nomedia file and still have your music.

Which file program did you use to create the .nomedia file? I use Explorer which is the non root version of Root Explorer, so I was wondering if that app kind of messes up your files if you add a .nomedia file.
first of all, if you are listening to any 44.1khz pcm file, you should not use the stock LG music player. It upsamples all 44.1khz pcm to 48khz pcm and creates audible artifacts. Neutron will work for you and ignore .nomedia. What it will not do yet is correctly unfold .mqa files and play DSD256 files. You should also consider using a photo viewer program that lets you choose where your pictures are located so that you do not have to bother with .nomedia at all.

I did it from a PC, I use solid explorer but it did not seem to work creating the nomedia file from that.
