Starting Out Question - Fascinate Android Development

Ok, easy question. Can I backup my fascinate as a whole so if I do brick I would be able to go back with ease? Just wondering.

Well you cant really back it up until you obtain root on the handset. Once you obtain root, and install Clockwork Recovery then you can do a total system backup.

I am rooted. Sorry should of mentioned that. Installing Clockwork recovery tomorrow
thanks!

IS this the best instructions to follow to install clockwork?

[Q] Pre-Root nandroid backup?

I see a lot of Titanium threads, which afaik requires root. I would like to find a good method to back up everything before I try rooting, if possible.
I found a similar question in Nexus S and matt2053 responded "...you do NOT have to be rooted to make a Nandroid backup." He didn't elaborate.
From what I have read, I believe that a nandroid is a complete image of the system, data and apps, which would allow me to go back to exactly where I was. Is that right? That would be great.
Would someone help me there? Do I use adb, or do I need an app, or what?
Thanks,
You need to be in recovery to make a nandroid. A far as I know you cannot do this unless you are rooted with s off
Sent from my Thunderbolt
If not nandroid, then?
Do you know of any method to make a complete backup before rooting?
This can be accomplished on some devices such as the Droid that don't require you to downgrade firmware (i.e. on some devices you can flash recovery without ever touching the rom) like the TB does to get s-off. So as you posted from your searching something similar may be true for the NexusS.
On the TB w/ the required firmware flashing steps, I don't think you can ever get a usable custom recovery without losing your current stock rom one way or another. I could be wrong as I haven't looked into it.
Basically, root (Superuser) is within the rom. For phones that allow you to flash a custom recovery without touching the rom, you can nandroid your original stock rom without su. For phones that can't, the only way is to flash a rom that is not rooted (does not include su).
I'm not personally aware of a way to make a full backup image other than that, sorry.

Just got unlocked Gtab and confused on best method for root and cwm

Have searched the threads and did not come up with anything pertaining to unlocked Gtab that seemed to clearly explain( to me) what the easiest methods are to root and apply CWM. The one I did find I found confusing. I am also considering just installing CWM recovery and then installing the new rom with the Touchwiz update which is also rooted. Is this possible to do and what would the easiest method be for installing CWM(I am familair with Odin and remotely acquainted with Nvflash. I would prefer Odin if that is feasible. I found a thread that was for the locked version but am hesitant until I find out for sure that it also works with unlocked device. Also is there a downside to just installing CWM and then having custom rom root the device? Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!!!

it takes 2 min
when you're done install ROM Manager,
do a nandroid backup if you want and
install the Touchwiz ROM,
after that do the root procedure again if you want root again.

Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 I will try this. Just one last question, if I restore the backup I make before flashing the rom, would I be able to get OTA for official TouchWiz? Or would I have to restore the stock recovery as well? Thanks again!! I hit the thanks buttom as well....
Hmmm that we dont know yet
but i believe the Aug 3 files will be available here before everybody receive the OTA and it my be the same version that T3rabyte received

Ok thanks and I hit the thanks button!!!
When installing the T3rabyte version will all of my installed apps and data still be available or do I need to reinstall everything. Sorry for such a newbie question but it would be a pain to have to reinstall all apps. I assume the OTA would not do a complete factory reset?

Question about Tenfar's recovery

I just got the the new 2.3.6 OTA update by following directions here:
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/update-atrix-2-to-android-2-3-6-ota-with-root-retained/
Got my root back and I am extremely HAPPY!
I also think i have been extremely lucky (and cautious) not to have encountered any problems. The only mod I have is ROOT.
If the install Tenfar's recovery (or his touch recovery) and do a backup of my current rom, will I encounter any problems installing the new ICS update when it becomes available? or are there any other downsides to it?
I think doing a recovery backup at this point is a good idea, I just want to be sure I will not cause any future update issues.
I am a NOOB. Thanks for any advice.

Do not, repeat DO NOT install tenfar's Recovery.... it is a dinosaur. Use Rom Racers or Rom Manager.
Sent from my CM7 Atrix 4G
having the recovery installed or making a backup would not have an impact on the ota update. Being rooted, unlocked and/or running a non stock rom could be a factor. Good idea to have nandroid b/u! git'r'dun!
ROM Manager or Rom Racer's?

OK great. All I want to do is keep my root - and I am not interested in any custom ROMS. I do not want to unlock my Atrix. All I want is a (nandroid) backup just in case my Atrix has a mishap.
Which is the BETTER route to take: ROM Manager or Rom Racer's?? I don't mind paying for ROM Manager. I just want the safest surest easiest full backup without messing up the future OTA ICS update.
The reason I ask is I thought you had to be unlocked in order to install CWM backup with ROM Manager.
thanks again

[Q] Want to backup stock odin rom, root and unroot my i717R

Hey guys, I have found most of the info I need, but am still left with a few questions after going through the forums. Maybe I am getting old, but I don't want to take it apart if I can't put it back together, so to speak.
What I want to do, is root my Rogers Galaxy Note without tripping the flash counter, which I learned is to:
Use Odin to flash CWR, and then reboot and install superuser from sd card. No problems so far, that seems simple. The problem I have is with restoring it to full stock. If I perform the above mentioned steps, do I need to flash a custom image? How would I remove CWM and superuser? Would I need to flash back to my stock ROM, and then my stock bootloader? Also, how do make a backup of my Rogers stock ROM/kernel? I read that the existing one has a Telus splash screen.
I found this thread, but the member implies to use titanium backup....wouldn't that back up a rooted ROM?
And this one says you can't make image unless you are rooted. How would I be able to go back to full stock?

[Q] unlock and root tf201 9.4.2.21

Hi all.
Ok, I'm fairly confused as to how to go about rooting my transformer prime 9.4.2.21 tablet.
As I understand it, I should be able to unlock the tablet, then install a 'ROM' that is already rooted, which means..I can boot into the 'ROM' and have root access??
So, I set out and unlocked my tablet (I'm aware of the warranty repercussions). Done. Now I want to root the tablet so I can install Ubuntu or perhaps Debian on it...does anyone know how I go about this?
I'm SURE this has been asked, I just can't seem to find it...I'm also quite new to the mobile 'hacking' world, and I'm a bit confused about all the buzz words (i.e. 'flashing a ROM', etc)..
I appreciate any help!
Cheers
I am pretty sure the next step after unlocking it is installing CWM, then using that to install the ROM of your choice.
Anyone else want to chime in here?
A.) Unlock.
B.) Flash ROM (you may want to pick before unlock0.
C.) Enjoy.
Unless it says otherwise you can assume any ROM that isn't from the manufacture, is rooted. The development section has ROMs, unlock, and Ubuntu crap. I use Debian in a chroot rather than native, and forgo X11. You may have to search for some things.
Can you point out a thread on how to install CWM from an unrooted device? Been searching,, but every thread points to Viperboy's thread, which will not work on .21.

You can't install CWM if you haven't unlocked. Root doesn't have anything to do with unlocking.
I suggest using Viperboy's tool to unlock your device. Be careful to follow ALL the directions and you'll be just fine.

Rooting and unlocking are different. If you are unlocked, research which ROM you'd like to install and follow the directions in that thread. Virtually every ROM thread has the directions listed. There's even a thread if you want to try Ubuntu, though it has limited functionality right now.
Personally, I like Jermaine's AOKP ROM. It is really fast and smooth.
That's all well and good, how do you install CWM after unlocking? All of the posts say to use viperboy's tool, but it is not available at this time, the link is dead.
On version 4.5 that I already have option 5 unlock says "MUST BE ROOTED!!"
Are you saying it works without root? Or will the Fastboot method here work?
ok mcliar, I found in another thread from you this:
EDIT: I fixed it! I was able to pull an .apk of OTA Voodoo Rootkeep from a previous Titanium Backup file. I installed the app, and it restored root for me! Its possible that I was already still rooted, but without the ability to d/l apps I couldn't do anything about it. Anyway, I'm back with a rooted .21!
I have a similar situation, lost wifi, did a factory reset, lost voodoo and now can't reroot. How did you pull the apk and install it on the prime?

I had a backup apk from titanium backup. I'll attach the apk so you can see if it works for you.
Yes, Viperboy's tool will unlock and install CWM without root (EDIT: come to think of it, I was rooted when I ran this. You can follow this if it doesn't work for you--->). Alternatively, you can use the ASUS tool itself, and then follow this thread to install CWM.
seems like everything needs root...
Ok...
So, I need to 'Flash a ROM'...right. I'm looking in the development section, and the ones I'm looking at require CWM to be installed..but that (from what I can find) requires root to install...
There was a mention of ViperMOD. However, from what I can tell that program will install CWM after you root the device, which it can't for me, as I'm running .21.
I've also read several mentions about using Rom Manager. I installed the free version, and tried to install CWM that way, but it failed with 'An error occurred while attempting to run priviledged commands', presumable because I need to root the device first.
Soo...it really looks like I need to root the device before I can do anything. Is this incorrect? It seems like it is, but when I look into the suggestions listed here I seem to run into a brick wall because I need a rooted device...
I appreciate all the suggestions guys, I really want to get stuff working on my TFP. Any help is (as always!) appreciated.
Thanks

oops sorry, I missed that CWM link...I'll check that out.
I have been researching all day, you will need to use fastboot in order to install cwm for the first time if you don't already have root. It will be what I use if I cannot get this titanium backup apk to work.
Mcliar, I appreciate you getting me the APK. I will let you know how it goes.
Could you post the backed up "su" for "OTA Voodoo Rootkeep" (i am guessing it stores the file in the application folder). I am wondering if it would be able to use this back to root the TF201
thanks
