[Q] Contact-Specific Ringtone - Vibrant Themes and Apps

It really irks me that I can't change a contact's assigned ringtone from the Vibrant contacts app. I have to go to Ringdroid every time and I have to create a new ringtone every time.
Is there any way I can get stock contacts on my Vibrant? or at least some hack that allows me to change the ringtone from the default contacts app? I'm coming from an iPhone, so this is kind of annoying.

You can do this, but it has to be a phone contact, not a gmail contact. Then you can link the phone contact to the gmail contact.
I think this whole setup is dumb in Samsung's part. I miss being to assign a ringtone to a contact like I did on my G1.

Hi,
Eugene managed to port the AOSP/stock contacts & phone apps to the vibrant in his "Hybrid" series of roms, and he's hoping to release a new update tonight, so you might want to check it out when he does.
Otherwise, yep, no way to assign a custom ringtone to a contact stored on google from the vibrant's default contacts application, javacody's suggestion is the only way to do this.
This is one of my top 3, most boneheaded, backwards modifications samsung made to android. The other two would be creating all new Calendar events by default on the phone locally instead of your google calendar, and making sms/mms delivery/red reports post a notification, instead of an in-line icon like the AOSP sms/mms app.
Sigh, so much for not fixing something that isn't broken.
Cheers, =)

Wow, yeah, that's really annoying. At least I can get it to work... Still... that's really stupid >_>

It's kind of a pain but what I did was....
Menu > Display Options > Google (or whatever contacts you WANT....)
then once you see the contacts you want...
Menu > More > Import/Export > Export to SD Card...
then once it's done exporting your contacts....
Menu > Display Options > Phone (so that it will only show contacts ACTUALLY on the device)
then once it's blank (or showing any contacts you have on your phone itself)
Menu > More > Import/Export > Import from SD Card...
This will import all the contacts that you exported earlier....
now when you go into contacts you can either leave it on Phone or put it back to "Google" for the Display options... it should auto-merge them and make it the same contact being that all theinformation is the same... so if you make frequent changes it will probably be better to filter it to "Google"....
anyway, when you are done doing all this, go into a contact that you wish to edit and when you open the contact you should now see a "Phone" tab on top....click that and then Ringtone option is near the bottom...
hope this helps, i know it's a pain but it's the easiest way i found to do it

Ringtones for contacts

Hi,
Does anyone know if there is a way to give specific ringtones to your contacts? I couldn't find it in the edit portion of contacts.
Thanks.
the contact has to be stored on the phone in order to set an individual ringtone. an easy workaround is to create another contact with the same name and save it to the phone then link the two.
Thanks. Somewhat annoying and a little more work, but it worked
Just dl ringdroid from the market its a free app.. It will let you make and edit ring tones on the phone the you can assign to contcts... worked flawless for me ..
I'm still waiting for integrated contact/ringtone saving directly to gmail, so I don't have to always retype, or reconnect my ringtones to everyone in my contact list.
I saved one of the contacts to the phone so i could put a rintone on the person but now it displays the person twice 1 for sim and 1 for phone. is there anyway to merge them together so it only shows the name once?
^ you can hide contacts from the contacts app, go to menu and display options and have it only show your google contacts, and not from the phone.
ringo lite free from android market
htown978 I love you! been trying to do this since thanksgiving!!!
THANK YOU!!
On the jl4 release, not sure about any after or before that, 2.2 touchwiz contacts allows you to save custom ringtones for contacts without saving a separate contact.
and yes, that was annoying as hell on 2.1 having to save another contact just to have a custom ringtone.

[Q] Utterly stupid importing of "All Contacts" from Google.

Hi All,
Before you say it, I know what I'm doing and understand how Google contacts work, I had a HTC HD2 (thanks Pongster and XDA!) and I am used to Android.
I know how Google contacts work, infact I submitted a bug fix to AweSync to fix up their syncing of Google Contacts with Lotus Notes.
Why does the Samsung Galaxy 1 (and 2!) show me _ALL CONTACTS_ when trying to SMS people? or when I try to save a newly dialled number into contacts, it shows all contacts?
I don't want to SMS an email address! I don't want to sift through 1,300 contacts yet this idiot phone is showing me them.

It's listing email Address's in the SMS TO: field - yet I've CLEARLY unticked "All contacts" and I've made it only show contacts with a phone number.
What is wrong with this thing?
EDIT: also, forgetting my ring tone every time I reboot isn't impressing me either.
Okay, I can't answer all your problems, and I do agree that the management of contacts on this phone is pretty poor, but there's obviously ways round certain issues.
One thing that will immediately help you is to use the contacts app to send SMS, rather than the SMS app. Select your contact (filtered as shown in your post) and you can swipe them left to SMS or right to call. That's a pretty handy feature.
However, if you're sending a message to more than 1 person you're back to square 1. I'd strongly recommend getting GO SMS Pro and GO Contacts (both free) from the Market. They're excellent replacements and I'm sure you'll be a LOT happier with them.

It does what you describe above. I don't know what you expect it to do though. You dial a number, click "Add to contacts" or "New contact" to either list all your contacts or create a new one.
is there any solution to this, i quite like the messaging app, but find it quite annoying when i have to search through hundreds of contacts, or else exit out to the contact application to text some1 who's actually in my contacts list ....
Its not a deal breaker for me, i prefer the stock than go sms or handcent, or any alternative i've tried, so if there is no fix i'll grin and bear it but if there is please help out
.... its not that i prefer the stock to any other, its just that no other provides anything that makes me want to move from stock, and since both will be running anyways it seems pointless to be wasting battery .... also i found double contacts problems with other apps aswell

Why? I think it is a good idea, since I very often MMS to email addresses! It is very handy to automatically downsize an image to MMS size when you are sending it to a person who you know will be looking at the email on their phone (e.g. my friend in Japan doesn't have MMS at all, over there nearly everything is email).
Been wondering about this too, i know the contact app you can customize what to show, which is fine, but the sms app show everyone you have been in contact with on google. Only "fix" i've found so far is to use another SMS app that can filter the contact list.
The solution is very simple. Just open display options in contacts and select only display contacts with numbers. Also untick everything that you don't want it to display. I don't save any numbers in phone or sim card so I save it to gmail account.
Even if I select only gmail it shows lots unnecessary contacts. So I went to gmail on my laptop and opened the contacts (phone book or something like that. Its been over a year so I don't remember)
I created a new category (u can choose an existing one) and transferred every single contact that I needed under it.
And thats it. Everytime I format my phone I just go to contact display settings on my phone and only choose the category that I made. And it only shows the contacts that I need.
It works also if u want to save a contact. I chose to save contacts to my gmail account when it asks. And everytime u save it saves it to the category that u choose.
I have been using this over a year and work flawlessly. I remember beig sick of choosing amongst 1000s of contacts.
I tried to explain as I could. If there is a problem ask me I will try to help.
Edit:
I realized this doesn't answer ur question about sms. This doesn't fix that SMS list behaviour.

[Q] Remove Contact Ringtone

So my girlfriend went screwing around with custom contact ringtones, now doesn't want any of them. Tried looking and searching, to no avail, for a "default" option or something to remove. It's the stock HTC People app, with no phone modifications whatsoever. Anyone able to gimme a hand?

Hi there,
I am experiencing the same problem, so is one other user:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26763729
Did you by any change found a solution for it?
Gr.
Ceriel
Not the most elegant workaround, but works quick and well enough:
Select the contact and hit the Menu key, then Export to SIM. Resets to Default ringtone when moved.
You can then go back to the main list of people and Import from SIM back to the Phone. This will make it Sync with Facebook normally again (FB and Google don't seem to like syncing with SIM stored contacts.)
If you have multiple contacts you wish to reset at once, hit the Menu key on the main list of People and select Import/Export > Export to SIM Card option. Then come back to the same Menu after the move and select the Import from SIM Card option.
You can tidy up the duplicates on the SIM card by filtering all other types of Contacts out with the drop-down menu at the top of the screen; check the box for SIM contacts and deselect the others, then hit Menu > Delete. Select the contacts you wish to get rid of.
Hope that helps

[Q] "Local" (non-Google) contacts in ICS?

I have a Galaxy Nexus with stock Android 4.0.2. On day one, I imported a bunch of contacts by writing a small program using the contacts API. This worked great, and they all show up as "phone-only, unsynced contact" in the contact list, which is exactly what I want. When I now try to manually add a new contact through the phone's menus, I have no choice but to add it as a "Google contact". How can I add it as local (unsynced) from the menus? If this, for some strange reason, isn't possible, then surely someone out there has made an app that does this?
Thanks for any help.
here's my fix http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1808037

Unable to set contact ringtones

So the procedure is:
Contact
Edit
(Scroll Down)
And you should be able to assign individual ringtones.
But instead the link (if it is even there) is not there/under the "Scan Business Card" button.
You can't assign a ringtone to a contact phone or messaging.
---
A third party app like ZEDGE will still allow you to do this. And you can remove ZEDGE after and the ringtone will stay in place. But if you try and edit it with the Samsung / Contact edit interface - the same problem as described at the start of the post still exists.
Anyone?

I've applied mp3 ringtones that are stored on my sdcard, same ringtones I've been using for years, to all my contacts using the above method.

I have the option on my T-Mobile branded Note 8 when following this procedure, although it is actually 3 lines ABOVE the Scan Business Card button.
Wonder if it is caused by using Outlook for Contacts from an O365 account?
