[Q] 3g doesn't work? - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my gsm hero, its on T-Mobile. It doesn't receive 3g. I've tried every Rom imaginable, updated the radio, I still just don't receive 3g. Help?
Edit: forgot to mention, edge and WiFi and everything else work flawlessly.

Anybody?

Have you enabled the only use 2g network box?
If not, i think it is because that your coverage simply isn't good enough.

I do not have that box checked, and I know for a fact my service is good enough, my Touch Pro 2 and G1 both get like 4 bars of 3G everywhere in my house.. lol.

Could it have something to do with my APN(s)?

Do you by any chance get a "H" signal most of the time?

dude!! I had the exact same problem with o2! (a generic handset, not branded). I left o2 for tmobile and i get 3g on it.
by the way, i heard of many people having problems with the t-mobile branded hero with 3g.(dunno if yours is tmobile branded or just on tmobile). Its a hardware issue apparently, so no fixes i dont think if it is that

What do you mean by that? I get EDGE 100% of the time, if thats what you're asking.
and as for a t-mobile branded Hero, there isnt one of those here in the states. this guy's an import.

On the top bar what symbol do you see?
E = Edge
G = 2G
3G = 3G
H = HSPRS (or something) - this is the fastest signal level, its like 3.5G essentially

Possible to get Vibrant to display H instead of 3G?

I was wondering if there was something I could download, or something from the market that i could download that would make my phone say H instead of 3G? My vibrant is not rooted.
I'm wondering why... but there won't be an app to do that. The G E and 3G icons are held in drawables. So unless you make your own update.zip with replaces drawables, I don't that's going to happen.

Why do you want it to display that? The H is generally displayed when you're using HSPA/HSPA+. If you're connected t 3G it will say 3G. If you're connected to Edge, you'll get an E and if you're on the barebones cell network all you get is the number of bars you have.

I think he wants his phone to be like nexus one is, or other android phones are running custom roms, specifically cyanogen mod. With cm, it will jump from 3g to h icon quite often when data is used, does it to me in my area. I get hspa speeds here, but 3g is the only icon displayed. I like it this way more, the constant jump from 3g to hspa in notifications pane is annoying. Maybe he just wants people to see that his phone is on hspa and not 3g, because the icon doesn't change to that on stock rom.
I remember the first time my g1 said h... Had to call a buddy with a g1 and had to find an i*hone to make jealous...
Its worth bragging about...

Not true. I have a stock rom on my Vibrant and it does toggle between 3g and hybrid. It just depends on whether or not you have the new radios broadcasting in your area. Some markets have a lot of hybrid running, while many others have little to none. One of my best friends is an RF tech for T-Mo.
Haha "H" doesn't stand for "Hybrid"

No ****, Einstein! It stands for HSDPA, but ask any switch tech and he will tell you its hybrid. Right now in many markets, it is a true hybrid mix of HSDPA and 3g and not explicitly one or the other. Do some research before you criticize someone, retard!
Lol I'm cool too, see I'm posting from my vibrant!

I downloaded the user manual to the vibrant (not the one that comes in the box) and it definitely says that there is a 'H' icon. I wonder why they don't have it displayed when actually connected to a HSDPA+ connection?
This is the text next to the 'H' Icons:
Displays when the 3G+ network connection is active.
Displays when your phone is communicating with the
3G+ network.
What does it mean when there's just a G?
3G means 3G
E means EDGE
H means Hybrid/HSPA or whatever. I was out of town last weekend, and noticed that it was just a G.

Anyone else notice the signal on the one seems a bit weak? Coming from my note 2 is a bar or two less. I assume this may be becuase of radios.
I did as well, some guy on here pointed out to me that it's kinda not accurate.
hit up your dialer and punch in *#*#4636#*#* and go to phone information. post signal strength numbers.
you can also get to this info through the settings menu in >about>network

I actually noticed quite the opposite... However it's only been a little over a day of owning this device. I'm also coming from a note 2.
Yup i mostly get 1-3 bars no higher than tha on LTE. on H i get 5.
This is my first phone on the At&t network and my bars are between 1&2 sometimes 3. I figured this was just normal since I have no other phone compared with. But regardless of what my signal says, I have no problems with dropped calls and my data is the fastest I've ever seen on any network so I'm not complaining.

I compared it with an iPhone 4 and a Blackberry Bold, and the One is about 10-15 less dBm side-by-side. I wonder what the problem is.

I tried switching to GSM (EDGE) only, the signal is better. HSPA (UMTS?) and LTE seems to give weaker signal. However, even in GSM mode, it's still weaker than the other devices.

I am curious as to how you switched from one to the other. I am still used to the HTC One X and being able to do that manually. With this new phone I can't find the right spot to do the switching. Where I live I get very poor signal on even the 4G network and would like to improve performance since there is no radios yet to flash like the HTC One X
Go to Settings/About/Network
the RSRP(dBm); is your signal strength ..the bars really are just guessing and change from rom to rom/kernel

[Q] LTE/4G/Edge/G radio switching

Hi everyone, I'm new to AT&T and HTC. I'm confused on how the networks should switch.
The area I'm in doesn't have LTE yet so lets leave this out of this
I'm having a signal issue at work. Where I sit I get 3 sometimes 2 bars (-97 to -101dBM) on the 4G network. But data doesnt work. When I use the browser it say error connecting to network and I when I run speed test it either doesnt find a tower or just sits on ping test.
When I look at mobile network type it keeps flipping between HSDPA and HSPAP. I've never see the phone change to the edge or G network unless my battery is almost dead.
Does this sound right or could I have a messed up radio? It does work great when the signal is in the -70s.
Please help. Wondering if my phone is messed up. It is still stock, locked bootloader, unrooted at the moment.

To turn off LTE, open dialer, type in "*#*#4636#*#*", then click "phone info", you will see "GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto" in the middle of the setting page. Switch to "WCDMA preferred" to use only 3G without LTE. You can also choose "GSM" to use only edge network.
Is there not an App or Widget that can toggle LTE and Edge networks?

Rezound and Net10 AT&T GSM prepaid SIM

So my contract is up in two days and I am looking at switching to a Net10 AT&T prepaid SIM service... Any real concerns or issues? I am on latest firmware and radios and running Infection 2.9.1 ROM.
Anybody doing this, comments or wish you had done it differently?
Probably going to pull the trigger in this today unless any red flags go up.
BTW, number porting is not an issue. I'm just going to move my VZW number to Google Voice once everything is working properly.
EDIT: ordered SIM and $50 unlimited card, should be here tomorrow. Hope all goes well...

The Rezound out of the box supports the 900 MHz and 2100 MHz bands, which are used internationally for 3G and HSPA+. In the US, AT&T uses the 850 MHz and 1900 MHz bands, and T-Mobile uses 1700 MHz and 1900 MHz. The Rezound is great as a global phone, but it's always been limited to EDGE data in the US. This has never changed with firmware and radio updates.
The methods in the thread referenced earlier will let you get the 850 MHz band working with a very non-optimized, weak signal. That means you'll sometimes have 3G or HSPA+ on AT&T. But unless someone figures out how to optimize the signal there, you're probably still going to be stuck with EDGE most of the time.

I don't think anyone is going to find a way to optimize it for a stable connection for a while. The thread has been very quiet for a while now. Some users did get different results and I read through the thread and some people got better signal using a calibrated sensation nv file.

Hmmm... Unfortunately it appears this isn't going to work as I hoped.
What's working: Voice and SMS out of the box... MMS, Data (2G Edge, speeds in the range of 15k to 50K) with some tweaking in the APN settings.
I tried the tweaks in the other thread and changing the NV settings, it would say it connected at HSPA+ and pull an IP address, but even with the AT&T tower less than a 1/2 mile in direct line of sight from my office window it would never open a web page or work with any app that required a network connection and signal strength was in the nether regions according to Network Signal Info.
Oh well... guess it was worth a shot.

Pretty sure I got everything right. Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to get everything to work on 2g , and I was able to pull an IP address when it said HSPA, I just couldn't stay connected or get any data through. Spent about 2 or 3 hours working on it this afternoon and finally gave up.

[Q] proper APN settings for Tmobile? (using unlocked Verizon HTC One)

I switched carriers to cut costs and I live in central Seattle, so with the Tmobile Headquarters next door, I knew coverage wouldn't be an issue. I hear that Seattle is a "refarmed" area and that even non-tmobile phones can get "decent" speeds (obviously not the LTE, but some sort of 3G/4G)
Can someone knowledgeable on the subject tell me what I need to get my phone off of E and onto H?
EDIT: I think I may have got the right APN settings by changing from fast.tmobile to epc.tmobile. the speed seems faster, but it still shows E (which may just be a limitation of the handset not being able to distinguish the 1900 MHtz 2G and 3G. Or out could just be a placebo effect.
but now I found a different issue. I can't call/data simultaneously. if it's not one thing it's another. x_x
Any responses

Pretty much edge is all you can hope to get. the Verizon model does not transfer over to T Mobile really. T Mobile is GSM, Verizon is a CDMA world phone. Verizon simply does not support the bands that T Mobile uses for 3G with one exception, the only way you will get a 3G connection is if you live in an area where T Mobile has a refarmed its 1900 megahertz edge network.
