Vibrant acting odd - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I finally flashed a custom rom Bionix 1.9 Jacs/OC/UV/VOODOO. Later i decided to flash a different custom battery icon. After i flashed the icon my phone would not stop reading/scanning my SD cards. It just kept goin in a loop. I decided to run my back up i made on Rom manager. That just soft bricked my phone. I attempted a factory reset but that failed as well. Then i tried to flash the Bionix rom again but it wouldnt run all the way. Later i was advised to use ODIN. I followed all the steps correctly when using ODIN. That didnt help either. Sooo after all that and my phone still being soft bricked i decided to try the factory reset again and then i installed the Bionix rom again. That seemed to work. My phone turns on and functions. Feels a lil slow and when i try to install an app it says i need to free up space on my SD card. (there isnt anything on either SD cards)
Some of the errors i recieved:
When trying to flash Bionix i get this:"failure at line 80:" "copy_dir PACKAGE:data DATA: Installation aborted.
Oh and when i tried the restore option it says the following: Restoring data...
.android_secure.img not found. Skipping restore of /sdcard/.android_secure
Restoring cache... sd-ext.img not found. Skipping restore of /sd-ext/.
Restore complete!
No no app2sd partition found. skipping format of /sd-ext.

Help this noob out please. Id appreciate help from some knowledgeable ppl.

You must disable Voodoo before flashing anything. So that is why you got into a soft brick When you Odin'd, did you follow the steps below? It was highly advised by Sombionix to read his whole post before flashing.
Did You Flash Something Before Disabling Voodoo? 2 Fixes to Help You Out.
So you forgot to disable the voodoo lagfix before you flashed a new rom and now you're getting an error, similar to the one posted below. Even Odin won't allow you to flash back to stock. Well, pay close attention and with some luck, you'll be good as rain...or something like that.
Fix 1:
1. Download Eugenes 'Froyo that does not brick' file.
2. Extract the files.
3. Open Odin, plug in your phone, then put it into download mode.
4. load the PIT file in appropriate area.
5. load the .tar file in the PDA area.
6. DO NOT check 're-partition'.
7. Click start, let it finish. Your phone will load and reboot into stock recovery. It will error out again. DONT panic! This is what's supposed to happen.
8. Now, pull your battery.
9. Download the 'True stock 2.1 firmware for the vibrant'.
10. Extract the files.
11. Once again, open Odin, plug in your phone, put into download mode.
12. Load the PIT file into the appropriate area and the .tar in the PDA area.
13. THIS TIME you want to check the 're-partition' box.
14. Now click start, let it finish, and this time your phone will load up just fine! BAM!
Fix 2: (use only if you know how to use adb commands)
1. Place the 'disable-lagfix' file in your sdk>tools directory
2. Get into clockwork recovery like you normally would
3. Follow these adb commands to push the 'disable-lagfix' file to you sdcard>voodoo
adb push disable-lagfix /sdcard/voodoo
4. File should now be on your sdcard in your voodoo folder.
5. Reboot phone and with luck, you should hear Linda the robot telling you your file system is being converted back to rfs.
6. Because your system directory has already been wiped, you'll still get a black screen when you reboot, but your file system is back to rfs. Just pull the battery, and reflash whatever rom you want. Then reboot again.
Hope that helps

[HOWTO] Completely Remove Voodoo Lagfix

THIS IS FOR VERIZON SAMSUNG FASCINATE USERS ONLY!
This should not normally be needed...but in my case it was. YOU WILL LOSE ALL DATA. THIS IS NOT A TRIVIAL PROCESS.
If you need to remove Voodoo4, for whatever reason (mine was not booting), this is how you do it:
1. Download original.mbr from here:
http://adrynalyne.us/files/kernels/sgs/original.mbr (right click save as....)
2. Download stock kernel:
http://adrynalyne.us/files/kernels/sgs/stock.zip
2. Boot to cwm (battery pull, and hold up volume while putting it back in and connected to usb), and put original.mbr and stock.zip on your sdcard. Mount as mass storage or adb push them to sdcard.
3. Use adb to restore the mbr:
Code:
cat /sdcard/original.mbr > /dev/block/mmcblk0
4. Use cwm to restore the stock.zip (kernel).
5. Mount dbdata and nuke the contents.
Code:
mkdir /dbdata
Code:
mount -t rfs -o nosuid,nodev,check=no /dev/block/stl10 /dbdata
Code:
rm -f /dbdata/*.*
6. Reboot back to stock recovery.
Wipe data.
7. Apply CWM. Wipe data.
8. Reboot.
Done and done. Nandroid restore back after this, if you wish.
If this doesn't work, take the illogical steps of:
Flash system, kernel and PIT with Odin. Remember, only use pda and pit sections.
Wipe again.
Automatic uninstaller
I am adding the uninstaller again, but it is not perfect.
To use the uninstaller, DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER!
1. Boot clockwork, and apply the uninstaller.
2. Go to the advanced menu and choose reboot recovery.
3. Wipe data from stock recovery. Apply CWM. Wipe data from clockwork.
4. Reboot phone.
Voodoo Uninstaller DI01 ONLY
DJ05/Voodoo5 Instructions
1. Disable voodoo either by adding a disable_lagfix text file or folder to /sdcard/voodoo directory, or by using the RED clockwork recovery for voodoo and going to the voodoo menu. Remember , you can only boot to it via:
adb reboot recovery
quickboot
manually (hold volume+/- and power)
framework modification.
Rom Manager cannot boot it.
2. Once disabled, flash a nonvoodoo kernel.
If red clockworkmod remains, please flash this, then reflash your nonvoodoo kernel of choice.

Thanks jt1134 for kernel, and pii for bringing the issue to my attention.
http://adrynalyne.us/files/kernels/DI01package3.tar.md5
Flash via PDA in Odin. This will return you COMPLETELY to DI01 stock, bloat and all. You will need to reroot, etc.
IF red clockwork recovery remains, you can Odin this file as well, in PDA.

Is the wipe necessary?
Can't someone accomplish the same by creating:
/sdcard/Voodoo/disable_lagfix
And then flashing to stock?
Edit:
I guess if someone is restoring a backup, then the wipe is irrelevant.
As the op said, this is for extreme cases. Usually, you should use the disable_lagfix method.
i keep getting a premission denied
adb shell
su
cat /sdcard/original.mbr > /dev/block/mmcblk0
Thanks a million!!!
my phone issnt rooted anymore since i restored it i couldnt get ride of voodoo and it made me have 0 internal storage
so this removes root? can't you just nandroid backup and get root back?
It does *not* remove root.

Cool beans, thanks adrynalyne!
I tried this method and now after the VZW logo my phone just sits at a black screen with the keys lit up. I can still adb into it, not sure what to try. I've tried reflashing everything using Odin but it didn't help.
automatic or manual method?
Manual method
Go back to stock recovery and do a data wipe.
Then see if it boots.
Careful with that beta auto uninstaller. I lost half of my apps and it's not reading my SD card.
Edit: It finally finished scanning for media, but now my Market downloads are failing, and it took away my Root Explorer. I don't even have the My Files app, so I can't install anything.

[Q] E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip-Samsung Vibrant

Hey everybody,
I apologize in advance if this post is a duplicate but I have tried searching for a solution and still lost. Here is what I did: I used the Odin to restore stock rom, then re-rooted using the one click method, then downloaded a rom from theunlockr.com, then used rommanger to install it. My rom has gave me no problems but now when I try to reboot into recovery to install something else(Like the 2.3 keyboard or a lagfix) i get this error:
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(No such file or directory)
Installation aborted
Can someone please help me? Thank you, BTW I have a Samsung Vibrant running axura-froyo-rom
I had the same problem too.
When I put update.zip at the root directory of internal memory... once I restart the phone (not get into the recovery mode), this file is missing / dissapear. So... I always got this message too :
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(No such file or directory)
Installation aborted
anybody can help us pleaseeeeee
I got my phone to factory settings using odin then i rerooted my phone and flashed the same custom rom back on and it worked. Try reflashing your phone, backup first, might work.

thanks for reply.
how to use factory setting using odin ? tick the "re-partition" box ?
can you explain to us step by step please ?
I'm so frustated
Did you guys delete the update.zip after rooting?
If you do not see
sdcard/update.zip using a file manager, download the update.zip from my noob guide, move it to internal memory and then try to flash CWR.
Also, look in the bottom of the noob guide (last few posts) for a solution to a RECENT issue with CWR... I assume whatever Koush did in the last update is causing this problem? BUT, there is a fix posted by another XDA user... just a matte of downloading the file and putting it in the right place.

listen to s15's post....he knows what he is talking about. i followed his noob guide in his sticky and everythign worked perfectly! his vids are also very helpful. one thing i have found that works a lot as well is if you download ROM Manager from the market and then click on "fix permissions"... don't know if this would help in this situation but i have had that fix weird stuff.

yeah this, the update.zip is ESSENTIAL for your phone to run the clockwork recovery, it stores all the things needed, and when you click "reinstall packages" your system goes in update.zip and looks for what to boot up and finds CWR and boots that so you see that screen.
Don't delete it if you did.
i have tried numerous times to root, but cant seem to get update.zip file in right place, can anyone help? thanks. challenged noob!!

When you usb into your phone it needs to be in the initial area of your sdcard.
You might have a bad update.zip file. Two things, verify the md5(if possible) from where you got it and check the properties and make sure it's not names update.zip.zip. The later is very common.
Try this method too btw, when I Odin back to stock I always use this one to root again. Follow the 'Automated Method' area.

you will need these drivers AND set your phone to debugging mode (settings/applications/development check USB debugging).

hey all,
Newbie here trying to flash a ROM, i am running into this same error, i have tried everything here and i have one question (might be a stupid question) but my root sd folder is called SD/, not SDCard/ ...is this a path error?
Please note it file must be in the internal card, not the SD card.
This step drove me nuts.
"2. Copy the update.zip (and the ROM) to the INTERNAL SD (not the external SD Card). sdcard/ " (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732458)
i ran into the same problem...how do i get from 3e to CWR?
here's what's shown in my vibrant directory: Android, DCIM, external_sd, LOST.DIR
i dont have an internal sd (the card) so it's not shown?
the path i got error on: /mnt/internal_sd/update.zip
1. when i tried to "reinstall packages" i keep getting the error that the update.zip file cant be found. should i create a folder for it or something? i think it's a matter of pathing but i cant find out the right place to put the file...(to get from 3e to CWR)
2. i see people suggesting boot with odin or sth like that...does that solve my problem and how do i do that?

You definitely have an internal sd card. Use Astro file manager or something similar and put update.zip on the root of internal sd card, meaning not in a folder. It should look like sdcard/update.zip. If you are having the 3e mismatch recovery issue read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423

i go to the link that you linked and ran the script. then i download the update.zip file at the noob guide with a slimbean 4.2.2 rom and addons. this time i would just put it in the root folder (technically not in any folder). when i try to reinstall packages, the screen shows that it is "replacing stock recovery with clock work recovery"... but then it would go back to the 3e.
so...i guess putting the files in the root folder is correct. but someone it still wont let me get tot CWR...

You have to reinstall packages twice for it to work properly. It is normal to not work the first time, just reinstall packages again and you should be good to go. If you keep having issues you should just flash back to stock 2.1 with Odin and go from there.

SO LOST! and now worried as to what to do next please help!

I just got the viewsonic g tablet. Ive followed several guides as to how to root it and get recovery on the device and flash a new rom, and I've failed completely and i think may have damaged my ability to get into any recovery. I believe i installed clockwork correctly v.8 correctly. I read that after you do that you can delete the folder called recovery and the existing update.zip so i did. I replaced the update.zip with the newest version of tnt lite 4.4 i believe. However every time i try to get into recovery it does not work. It turns on, says recovery key detected and then flashes a package for about 5 seconds, then boots up into the normal tablet os. It is as if every time i go into recovery or attempt to, it repeatedly installs clockwork recovery. So i feel at this point i cannot even get into any recovery whatsoever. I just tried a factory default erasure, but that this point i don't know if i altered the recovery to do that. If anyone could be so kidn as to help me out here and walk me through what im doing wrong or how you can save my ass i would be so greatful.....
Damn, I always hit thanks instead of reply, talk about bad GUI or blind clicker....
this is exactly what is hapening, you must have an update.zip in the root of the internal memory just to help you figure it out
sdcard = internal memory 16GB
sdcard2 = external card Whatever size you place
Try removing the sd card if you have one the update.zip could be there also...
either way try to figure it out, but you are definitely flashing a file, it's not a bug if I can say so... good luck!
Also this confirm you do not have clockwork installed but the original recovery (no menu, simply grab the update.zip and flash it!)
and read this again maybe

heres the thing. I don't understand what is going on. when i put in my actual sd card. i cant get the file explorer to see it or reconize it for some reason. this is what is killing me, initally when i went into es file explorer it showed sd card and sd2 but later it wouldnt show up when i had an sd card in there. I appreciate your help, i really feel like im killing my tablet here. I had the update.zip on the internal memory or sd card as it reads, not on the actual sd card because i couldnt find the sd2 file system. what do i need to do again now that you know this?
this is the complete sotry of how i got to where i am ......... i first tried to installed zroot and failed. then i dloaded clockwork mod .8 for i believe sd and accidently put it on the internal sd and got confused. i did the power off then power and volume up. it then installed i guess clockwork. then i powered on, deleted the recovery folder and update.zip from the internal sd because a forum post said to since u didnt need it for clockwork. So i then dloaded a rom. then tried to go into clockwork but like i said it kept saying recovery key detected and flashed clockwork mod. and does that over and over. so i then added a recovery folder back with a text file that said command and a command line within that text file. and i dladed the most current stock rom and named it update.zip figuring that if i bring it back to normal i could start over. but everytime i would try to go into recovery it would just seem to flash clockwork. so now im very lost and have no idea how to fix this. ALL i want to do is have root access and flash a rom and I feel like i completely screwed this up and am at a loss.
1. Remove recovery folder and update zip from both sdcard and sdcard2.
2. Add the clockworkmod zip to the root of sdcard. (make sure you are using CWM for internal SDcard)
3. Using Esfile explorer extract the contents of the clockworkmod zip.
4. You should now have a new recovery folder and update zip on \sdcard.
5. Power off.
6. Power on holding the volume +.
7. CWM zip will be flashed. (should only take a few seconds) and then tab will boot normally.
8. Reboot into recovery and enjoy the CWM goodness.
P.S. All the custom ROMs come already rooted. No need to root ahead of time.
Duplicate instruction removed
thekafka,
First, read this info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010943
If you indeed have a working ClockWorkMod, all you have to do
is copy the update.zip file to your /sdcard directory. The shut
down and start CWM using power / volume +. The use the
menus to tell it to load the update.zip and find the update.zip.
You don't have to have the recovery folder with CWM, but you
do need update.zip (you said in your summary you erased it!)
If this doesn't move you ahead enough to work, clarify what
you did this time and what happened and we'll look for Plan B

moral support...
There are far more expert posters on this forum than I. But I just thought I'd give you some moral support. Take deep breaths, and don't panic. The people here will help you through just about anything, and any missteps you might make. All of us, well, most of us, started out exactly where you are, and we are still great fans of the gtab. I have found that even I could not "brick" the tablet. And believe me, I have had moments of panic too. So, just read the various threads, carefully follow the steps, and just take your time. The gtablet is a great tablet.

Bump for this kind fellow. I have in the span of a week taken my Gtab as close as it is possible to bricking, and managed to get it back into working condition with instructions from elsewhere on this forum.
The good news is that with a little elbow grease, and assuming that you don't break the hardware, you are just fine. The Tegra2 platform is hard to brick, and if all else fails you can use Nvflash to rebuild the partitions and write a stock image to flash. If you think you have done something really bad to your ROM, reverting to a stock image may be a reasonable next step.

Read the install notes
For starters depending on what version of the OTA you are on 3588 etc.. on the TnT lite install in recommends that cwm not be used.
TNT Lite is an alternate 1.1 based ROM for the GTab, based on the stock ROM that Viewsonic supplies. This will flash system, bootloader and your kernel, so be aware of this. Clockworkmod is NOT recommended for use with TNT Lite flashing (as it does not update the bootloader as required by the vendor), but it is an option if you feel you must use it (ie. if you are stuck in a boot loop and need to wipe your user data). It is a "mostly stock" ROM.

You might need to read up a bit more or use an older version. I have bricked this tablet more than a few times. I use linux to nvflash and have nvflashed from 3991 back to 3588 and still been able to drop tnt lite 4.2 back on it.
You might need to read this a few times.. I keep reading the dang thing over and over...

it wont delete cause of permissions. I use root explorer for this kind of work. In this particular case i had deleted the nececary scrips from the flash zip and i flashed afterwards. (i had a clean install)
I am trying the clean install as well, can you give the instructions or point me to somewhere where I can read more about this, thanks for your time and effort.
Do I just delete it in the Devoid.Franco v5 zip before flashing and then restart the process (the only file that I can find is tweaks.sh)
Sorry, found the init.d file as well. Would I delete those files in the zip, rezip and then start the process over?
you just delete them from the zip and you flash it as usuall. just dont forget to disable verification check on your recovery or else it will give you error
Sorry, just a newb when it comes to this.
I couldn't delete the two files from the devoid.franco.v5.zip file so I did the following:
1. Extract the zip file
2. Deleted the two files
3. Rezipped the files into a new devoid.franco.v5.zip
4. Load the zip into the micro sd card after all the wipe and partition
5. Disabled Signature check
6. Tried the flash and it said it can't open the zip because it's bad :-(...

Extracting a zip and re-zipping it DOESN'T work. You are not supposed to unzip the file. Just flash the rom, delete the offending files using root explorer, and then flash the kernel.
Sent from my LG Optimus One P500 using XDA App
You should't extract the file and rezip it. It corrupts it when it comes to flashing. I personally browse the zip file with winrar and simple delete the files i need. I also add files to zip this way like apks, ringtones etc
Trying winrar and it seems to work, gone to see if I can finish the entire process. Thanks so much for your time again. In the future, can I send the apps that I want directly into this zip? I can to sue something zipsigner before to get calendar, etc... Thanks again!!!
An alternative way for a clean install:
1: wipe everything
2: flash devoid.franco.v5
3: reboot (to check if everything is ok)
4: reboot into recovery
5: mount /system partition under 'mounts and storage' (clockworkmod)
6: from pc type (with phone still in recovery): 'adb shell'
7: in adb shell, type: 'rm /system/etc/tweaks.sh'
8: in adb shell, type: 'rm /system/etc/init.d/00script'
9: flash franco.kernel.v14
10: reboot
I Hope it helps,
Bye
You're welcome m8.
And yes you can have the apps you want inside the rom this way very easilly. just put them in app folder. I did this with some removed apps like browser and calendar and also removed zeam launcher and used adw launcher (personal taste) I even tried that with frameworks (aka themes) and it worked great
Thanks so much to both of your posts, it's working. One last questions, thought setcpu was already implemented in this kernel, but I don't see it anywhere? Again, thanks again for everyone's time and effort, learned so much today (wife is mad though because we need to do house work, lol, lol, better get going)... She said, "who formats their phone 5 times in 1 month, lol, lol"
setcpu is NOT included, you have to install it.
See first post in franco.kernel thread for the link.
Eh! eh! you are not in Europe, I guess if you have to help your wife NOW!!!
Barcelona-ManchesterUTD right NOW...
oh yes the wifes. my gf gets fustrated like "wtf are roms and kernels?? its just a phone!!! you call people and they call you back" rofl
One last note on setcpu. When i was using last version (2.13), every time i rebooted my phone the settings where gone and had to set them again. I switched to v2.1 and it worked like a charm. Have no idea if that is general issue or only me had it. Just thought i should tell you
Done via editing the zip with rar and all worked smoothly.
Thx all

i have re flashed my phone a while ago. it went well. from 2.3.5 to eclair 2.1. i reflashed due to wifi error, however, eclair installed, rooted the the phone, i plan to reflash it with a custom rom, Bionix 1.3.1 or Project V. im using the AIO toolbar, i tried it first with the Bionix, reinstalll packages 4 times. and i get an error. also with the Project V rom. same thing. error as well. the error says:
cannot locate /sdcard/update.zip
does this mean that my phone is not yet rooted? i have super user though.
Mostly likely you do not have the CWR Update.zip on your SDcard.
Go here and download Option B and put it on your SDcard. Reinstall twice and then flash your ROM
i already copy and pasted the file in /sdcard however it is still not working? shall i got into CWR? to make it work?
Put the CWR zip from my earlier post on your sdcard (not in a folder-just plain on card by itself). Might have to rename it Update.zip, but not sure about that one.
Boot into recovery (Blue) hit Reinstall Packages.
Will reboot back into recovery (Blue) and hit Reinstall packages again, will boot into CWR (Green).
From there, find Install zip from SD card and hit it. Now you can find you ROM and highlight it and install.
