best is always to go from stock, as it forces you to implement things and know what you're doing.
copy cyanogen do not make you a "rom cooker"
Hey Guys,
I'd like to get involved with making Android ROMs as well. I have a Droid and would LOVE to make my own Droid ROMs . I am already a student software developer so I don't mind getting into the nitty gritty, in fact, the deeper the better, so I can fully learn how to build and work with Android. I also hope to be able to make Android apps eventually too. I know Java and Perl fairly well and have recently started C and C++.
Any suggestions for where to start would be greatly appreciated, i.e. tutorials, videos, guides, what languages I need to know, what tools I should use (eclipse, etc., with what plugins, etc.). Thanks a bunch, and let me know if you guys have ideas for apps you'd like to see on the Market .

i am trying to compile from aosp. since i have no programming experience at all, it is a slow learning process so far. my ubuntu has redo and git running perfect now. i have eclipse working but have not used it at all yet. androidsdk 2.2 adb is fine but fastboot is a hassle.
so far, two froyo alphas both flashed but buggy. not one decent tutorial that makes the kernel compile/framework/gapps process clear
My AOSP 2.2 for passion/n1 alpha2 is pretty darn solid now. It took mushing together instructions from 5 incomplete tutorials to fill in the blanks.
What a great feeling to have a ROM not kanged. The Repo/Git tool has gotten easy to use after several long sessions using it in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
Anyone on the same OS, I suggest you research and install both Java 1.5 & 1.6 and get use to switching between the two. Also, I have not yet used Eclipse but it isinstalled and it works with SDK.
The Android Open Source site does a decent job of walking you through Repo...Git...and getting the source. After getting that far, I stumbled through setting up a "vendor tree" and looking through all the folders and files to see what it was all about. Much of it was totally over my head. But after attempting several crap builds, the "compile" process is sinking in a bit.

I found this site to be very helpful for building from AOSP...

JQ,
If you mean uploading an app to the Market, then you need to sign-up to be an Android developer (25 bucks).
Some useful links:
http://developer.android.com/index.html
http://developer.android.com/guide/publishing/publishing.html
http://market.android.com/publish
Didn't see your thread until after I got home from work...
Cheers!
if you just want to post comments, you first need to download the app, then you get the option to rate and comment. Download app, then hit Post a Comment
thanks you very much. Sorry I had to delete because no one would help me out. Just one person but didn't understand.
I paid the fee and got an account. I'm just not sure about those "manifest, xml, and other files" to put in my app. I'm not a developer, I just create images on my photoshop cs5. I do a good job and wouldn't post junk. I just don't know the lingo that goes with the app. I create good quality, very detailed icons, clocks, docks would love to create a theme but its the files that I don't know.
I was looking for help on this.

There's tons of great web sites with simple tutorials and apps--a great way to get started and dip your toe in the pool, so-to-speak. I've found that by searching and trying stuff out, you'll learn a lot in a short time. Don't try to absorb and understand it all at once--there's just too much. Take small bites of the Android pie and it'll digest much easier
There's a few good books out there too, but I would advise searching for helpful sites that lead you through some simple apps first. This will teach you about Eclipse and the basic things that you can do for building said apps.
Good luck and cheers!

[Q] Want to help build an awesome clock widget?

So I decided I wanted to build a clock widget and I have hit a brick wall as there are really no (good) guides to do so, I used to develop themes and widgets for iphones so I know a little bit and have a great ability to learn but needless to say android is a different beast. I have created a mock up of what I want it to look like, you can see it in the attachment below. I just need someone to code it or point me in the right direction. I have SDK and Eclipse installed so I can "build" the widget, I just need some know how or someone willing to help a brother out. Thanks in advance for any help.
anyone??? BUMP
BUMP!!! so....I still have made zero progress with this. (other than the graphical work) I need some experienced coders or someone to point me in the right direction.
Bump?????Bumpp bump
Well, looks like we're both in need of some help...

Moving to Q&A

Beginner looking for android app project to join.

I am an aspiring android developer trying to teach myself the language. I would like to find a project, maybe open source, that I can get involved in as a real world experience with android programming.
I am wondering if there are people here that are either working on, or who could recommend, a project that I could join? I think that working on a modern app would be a great way for me to continue my learning. I have been working with books, but I worry that the information might not be completely up to date.
I am excited to get involved with real world app programming. I hope to be helpful to any project that I join Thanks to everyone in advance!
Hi MastrFett,
It is great to see how exiciting a person could be when learning. I do not have a project but I recommend you to do one for your own.
When doing something that you are going to release you do the best of yourself and you learn much more. Facing real problems is very exciting. There are lot of things that a book wouldn't explain you; you will discover them when you know that not only you is going to use your app.
Try something and upload it on Google Play. Don't get bored reading questions/answers on StackOverflow -it will be your best friend -
Patedit,
Thanks. My only problem is I don't feel like I have many good ideas of my own right now. I think the few I have would require algorithms more advanced than my level of skill. I'll have to keep thinking.
I was just hoping to find something that would give me the chance to just jump in head first on a project right away. I do eventually want to do something on my own when I come up with the right idea.
You need a good idea if you want to become rich
If you want to learn, you don't need great ideas I know it could be frustrating at first... Imagine something you need or that will help you in your daily use of your smartphone.
For example, yesterday I made for me a widget in which I could see the next alarm time. With pressing on the widget, the Alarm Clock app is launched. That could sound 'easy' but it took me several hours. I did it because I wanted a nice widget to do so and a shortcut to the Alarm Clock app which I didn't have.
Good luck!
There is an app idea I had, but I found out there are a lot that already do what I want on google play. Should I still make the app for experience? I don't know if it is worth it if the app already exists.

Try this. I would do it for you, but I really don't have time to do all sorts of favors. It isn't too difficult, and it doesn't involve smali editing, so make a backup first and you can try to your heart's content.
thanks bro

Dude, stop bumping this thread. I already said I'm not going to help you, so just try modding yourself. Do yourself a favor. Don't come to XDA if you just want the end result. Do it for the journey there too. It's more satisfying when you know you did it yourself.
calm down

It's called trying. All I'm saying is to quit asking people to do it for you. The sad and unfortunate truth is that no one is interested in doing the do for you. Big time developers don't have time to help you. Modders want you to learn. And then there are people that ask, ask, and ask, but don't want to or haven't even tried out whatever they want to accomplish. If you seriously try as hard as you can, I'm sure you will end up reaching your destination. If not, then I can and will help you.

Here you mentioned the problem
You can't decompile because you don't have Java installed, I guess. Install it first
Notepad ++ will give you strange symbols because the app is not decompiled.
See this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2326393
